KinderLab Introduces KIBO Robotics Course for the Youngest Homeschoolers

News Image

KinderLab Robotics today announced a new three-month KIBO Home Robotics Course that enables home educators and caregivers to introduce coding and robotics to their young learners without computers or screen time. The course provides a step-by-step curriculum to easily teach coding, robotics, and STEAM concepts, and includes use of a KIBO 18 Robot Kit to support the curriculum. This unique rental program makes creative, cross-curricular STEM/STEAM learning affordable and easy to implement for homeschool educators.

KIBO is a hands-on, playful robot that offers young children a fun way to learn coding and building along with storytelling and imaginative play. KIBO is entirely unplugged and screen-free: no smartphone, tablet, PC, or network connection is needed. Children use wooden blocks to program their own robot, then build onto the robot with art and craft materials to create a character to act out their story or lesson.

KIBO is the result of extensive research by KinderLab co-founder Dr. Marina Bers, Chair of the Eliot-Pearson School of Child Study and Human Development at Tufts University. Dr. Bers has shown that children engage with powerful ideas in computational thinking, the engineering design process, and social-emotional learning (SEL) by imagining and creating with technological tools. Dr. Bers’ research demonstrates that when children create and express themselves with age appropriate technologies, they develop not just technical skills but also confidence, perseverance, and creativity.

Jason Innes, the manager of training and curriculum development at KinderLab Robotics, Inc., said, “As the first educational robotics company to offer a program specifically designed for home educators, our goal is for KIBO to help level the playing field and offer homeschoolers the same opportunities their peers have in public schools. Adding coding, robotics, and STEAM to a homeschool curriculum can feel difficult—and expensive. We’re offering the KIBO Home Robotics Course as a rental program to create an affordable, step-by-step, supportive way to include KIBO in home learning environments.”

The KIBO Home Robotics Course integrates arts and crafts into STEAM learning. As children develop their computational thinking and coding skills with KIBO, they can use their robot to tell stories, choreograph dances, create a vehicle to explore a cardboard town, create programs that model the behavior of animals in their habitats, and more. Coding becomes a new literacy that children can use to explore their other subjects more deeply.

With the three-month KIBO Home Robotics Course, home educators have full support from KinderLab Robotics as they integrate coding and robotics into their homeschool curriculum. In addition to the complete, research-backed Creating with KIBO curriculum, the program includes fun Activity Cards, helpful workbooks, and a clear lesson sequence. Course participants also receive weekly emails with specific advice, examples, and suggestions keyed to their progress through the course.

The KIBO Home Robotics Course is available now at KinderLabRobotics.com/at-home. The program fee of $169 includes the three-month KIBO rental, complete curriculum, and two-way shipping anywhere in the continental United States (additional shipping charges apply for US locations outside the continental US).

When participants complete the three-month course, they can use the pre-paid shipping label to return the course materials to KinderLab. Families who would like to continue using KIBO to support STEAM learning in the home can instead choose to purchase their KIBO Robot Kit at a significant discount. After purchasing, they can extend their KIBO experience with a range of fun add-ons and extension sets.

About KIBO – The Playful STEAM Robot

KIBO is a robot kit that allows children aged 4–7 to build, program, decorate, and bring their own robot to life without requiring any screen time on a smartphone, tablet, or computer. It is an open platform on which students can envision and create their own robot. With art and engineering, students transform KIBO into imagined animals, vehicles, storybook characters, and more. Students plan a coding sequence using wooden programming blocks, then scan their sequence with the built-in barcode scanner, press its button—and the robot comes alive.

When children build, code, and decorate their own robot, they perceive it as play, but they are learning invaluable STEAM skills. Not only are these hands-on experiences inherently rewarding, but they help children understand the technology in their world and can even improve their future job prospects.

About KinderLab Robotics

KinderLab Robotics is the creator of the award-winning KIBO, a playful educational STEAM robot kit based on 20 years of child development research with thousands of children, teachers, and parents. Developed specifically for teachers by Dr. Marina Umaschi Bers at Tufts University, KIBO is currently used in 59 countries and has proven efficacy in helping kids learn STEAM—and getting them excited about it! KinderLab offers a complete suite of teaching materials that help integrate STEAM elements into a wide range of curricula, including art, cultural studies, and reading literacy.

Over 3,400 runners from 17 different states and six different countries came together to participate in the Surfing Madonna Beach Run, which was sponsored in part by Herman Cook Volkswagen of Encinitas.

The Surfing Madonna Beach Run, which took place on Saturday, October 26, 2019, in Encinitas, California, was a resounding success for all involved, allowing the annual event to keep its title as the “Largest Race on Sand” from the Guinness Book of World Records.

Over 3,400 runners from 17 different states and six different countries came together to participate in the race, which was sponsored in part by Herman Cook Volkswagen of Encinitas.

Among those runners were multiple participants from countries such as Mexico, Canada and England. The runners were assisted throughout the day by a dedicated and hard-working group of 364 volunteers.

The runners enjoyed a scenic beach run of either 5 kilometers, 10 kilometers or 12 kilometers, starting at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas and then heading up the coast to Beacons Beach and Ponto Beach before heading south to Swami’s Beach.

Before the race started, participants were treated to two dances performed by the University of California San Diego dance team, which is ranked 10th in the nation.

After the race, participants were gifted a carved wood medal, a race shirt, a race mug and treats galore. They were also treated to a live performance by local Encinitas musicians, Bucket Ruckus.

Proceeds from the event are being used to support the Surfing Madonna Beach Run and its Oceans Project efforts to protect the coastline.

Those efforts are one of the main reasons Herman Cook Volkswagen chooses to sponsor the race, as everyone at the dealership is committed to supporting the local beach community and the efforts taking place to preserve the beauty and health of those beaches. Partnership for Children’s Mental Health, a Center Focused on Improving the Youth Mental Health System in Colorado

The Quad Innovation Partnership (QIP), the only higher education partnership of its kind in the United States, is pleased to announce new work with Partners for Children’s Mental Health (PCMH), a center supported by Children’s Hospital Colorado and the University of Colorado Department of Psychiatry.

PCMH operates as across-system resource, training, and implementation hub in order to ultimately increase capacity, access, and quality of youth mental health services in Colorado. It works with partners across the state to identify, scale, and sustain best practices to help connect youth and families to effective mental health treatment and, ultimately, save lives.

One of PCMH’s key action items is school-based mental health care and suicide prevention. Students from QIP will conduct and deliver interdisciplinary research to assess best practice suicide prevention programs that address key risk factors among elementary and middle school students in Colorado. PCMH currently offers support to high schools; the project will help PCMH expand support to elementary and middle school students statewide.

“The Quad works on many important initiatives that impact our communities and this initiative with Partners for Children’s Mental Health is one of the most critical items our organization has been a part of,” said Jake Eichengreen, Executive Director of the Quad Innovation Partnership. “As noted by PCMH, suicide is the #1 cause of death among Colorado youth ages 10-24. This is a massive problem and we have assembled a dedicated team to produce outcomes for PCMH that address real need and will strengthen their essential work.”

QIP is comprised of students, staff and faculty from Colorado College, Pikes Peak Community College, University of Colorado Colorado Springs and the US Air Force Academy. This diverse group delivers professional-grade recommendations, tactics and solutions for a varied array of clients, covering a wide range of initiatives and issues that impact the lives of people in southern Colorado and the nation.

“The Quad’s recommendations will be critical to our efforts to provide a scalable, low-cost suicide prevention package to schools across Colorado,” said Shannon Van Deman, Executive Director of Partners for Children’s Mental Health and Vice President of the Pediatric Mental Health Institute at Children’s Hospital Colorado. “The Quad is recognized as a leader tackling some of the biggest challenges facing our state. We’re excited to partner with them to create real impact for youth and families.”

The project was made possible through the generosity of Mark and Shannon Breuer and their family, who are dedicated to supporting the most effective initiatives in expanding behavioral health access, reducing youth suicide, and positively impacting our community’s children and families.

About the Quad Innovation Partnership: A collaborative initiative of Colorado College, Pikes Peak Community College, University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and the United States Air Force Academy[1], the Quad deepens the ability of graduates to innovate within professional settings in the Pikes Peak Region. As the only initiative combining the capacities, students and faculty of a private liberal arts college, a regional community college, a state research university and a US service academy in the United States, the Quad’s value is built on the diversity of institutions it represents. All projects the Quad facilitates leverage the combined capacities of these four institutions in order to work together to discover, validate and initiate solutions for public, private and philanthropic clients
