HIMSS Analytics Survey Sponsored by Dimensional Insight Finds Healthcare Orgs. that Focus on Clinical Outcomes as Key ROI Metric Have Higher Success with Analytics

As healthcare organizations move to value-based payment models, they are finding that focusing on clinical metrics, including readmission rates, infection control, and patient outcome improvements is critical for success. Analytics provides tremendous insight into these areas.

Dimensional Insight®, the maker of Diver Platform™, a data management, analytics, and performance management solution, today announced the results of a survey it conducted with HIMSS Analytics of 109 senior healthcare leaders. The survey examined how healthcare organizations implement metrics and measure ROI from their analytics programs. It found that those organizations that focus on clinical outcomes as their key ROI metric – as opposed to financial returns or staff efficiency – rank higher across the board in terms of usage of analytics across the organization, average number of metrics used, measured success rate, and overall effectiveness of analytics.

“As healthcare organizations move to value-based payment models, they are finding that focusing on clinical metrics, including readmission rates, infection control, and patient outcome improvements is critical for success,” says George Dealy, vice president of healthcare solutions at Dimensional Insight. “Analytics provides tremendous insight into these areas and can benefit healthcare organizations that are navigating this transition.”

Key findings from the survey include:

  • Of organizations that are leveraging analytics, 84% are doing so in multiple areas (clinical, financial, operational), while two-thirds are leveraging analytics across the organization.
  • Organizations feel their analytics solutions have been most effective towards improving financial performance, but they have been able to see the most measured success with clinical analytics (77.7%) vs. financial analytics (73.5%) or operational analytics (70.3%).
  • The primary method organizations use to determine ROI is most often financial returns and improvements (41.2%) vs. clinical outcome improvement (37.3%), staff efficiency (12.7%), or measured improvements across the patient journey (3.9%). However, they see the highest measured success rate (75.4%) if they use clinical outcomes improvement as their primary metric.

The Impact of the Community Rating System

News Image

Hurricanes Sandy and Katrina reeked havoc on our southern and eastern coastlines. With recent flooding along the Mississippi River and the near-miss of Hurricane Barry on the Gulf Coast is a reminder of the constant flood risk faced by communities and the need to be prepared for flood events.

In a new article released in the Applied Economic Perspectives & Policy, “Flood Insurance and Claims: The Impact of the Community Rating System,” Eugene Frimpong from East Carolina University and Ardian Harri, Daniel Petrolia, and John Cartwright from Mississippi State University look into what it would take to increase participation in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

Petrolia says, “We find a positive relationship between participation in the Community Rating System (CRS) and participation in the NFIP. However, we find that only those communities participating at the highest levels of the CRS realize real reductions in flood claims. So the policy discounts associated with CRS participation appear to be attracting more homeowners to insure, but only in very limited cases do the levels (and types) of CRS participation appear to lead to real reductions in exposure.

If you are interested in setting up an interview with Petrolia, please contact Allison Scheetz in the AAEA Business Office.

We Will Fight Purdue Settlement on Behalf of Opioid-Dependent Babies

“This fight is not over, nor should it be.” – Celeste Brustowicz

Attorneys, medical experts and non-profit leaders represented by the Opioid Justice Team and more than 35 class actions representing infants born already opioid-dependent due to the mother’s use of prescription opioids while pregnant, intend to fight vigorously Purdue Pharma’s efforts to shield itself from thousands of lawsuits filed in relation to America’s prescription opioid crisis, fueled in large part by the marketing of Purdue’s OxyContin drug.

“Our clients, the innocent victims of this nation’s unbridled corporate promotion of an addictive substance to thousands of men and women, but especially child-bearing aged women, will not accept the bankruptcy settlement,” said Lead Attorney Celeste Brustowicz. “This proposal ignores the most critical victims of this crisis, who will suffer birth defects like Spina Bifuda and Gillam-Barre, and very often be sent home from hospitals as opioid-free babies with unsuspecting parents who may not see developmental disabilities in these children for months.”

According to a settlement announced Sunday, Purdue hopes Chapter 11 bankruptcy will prompt an automatic stay of current civil litigation against the company over the opioid epidemic. Though Purdue estimates the value of the settlement at $10 billion, others with a vested interest in the proposal believe this is too optimistic a calculation and could be worth only half that much. Others oppose the deal because the restructured company proposed in the settlement allows on-going sales of OxyContin to fund the settlement structure, rather than the existing profits of Purdue’s owners themselves.

“After two decades of indiscriminate destruction and devastation to families nationwide, it is insincere for Purdue to declare in the days preceding its bell-weather trial in Cleveland, that it and the Sackler family alike are in a rush to get money to the politicians, whether it be the states, counties or cities,” said Ms. Brustowicz. “Purdue voluntarily surrendering itself by agreeing to enjoin themselves from engaging in misconduct is unprecedented, even by Purdue’s own lawyers.”

Currently, cases against Purdue because of the prescription opioid crisis linked to drug manufacturer and distributor falsehoods and suspect marketing practices, number in the millions of individuals. Among these are at least 250,000 infants represented by the Opioid Justice Team. These attorneys and medical experts fighting on behalf of opioid-dependent infants estimate a baby with Neo-Natal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) is born in the U.S. every 15 minutes.

“This is an insensitive response to children and their guardians. The time for defendants and Big Pharma to make amends with babies suffering from Neo-natal Abstinence Syndrome and related maladies is long overdue,” said Ms. Brustowicz. “This fight is not over, nor should it be.”

Ms. Brustowicz said her team will continue to push for a legal track in the Multi-District Litigation before Judge Polster, whom drug manufacturer representatives moved to have removed from the case over the weekend, as well as in the 35 individual states which have filed NAS class actions.

“We’re on the side of the angels and we will continue to press on,” she said.

Roswell Park Moving Unique Immunotherapy Platform Forward With $6.42 Million DoD Grant

Drs. Shipra Gandhi and Pawel Kalinski will lead a Department of Defense-funded clinical trial assessing a three-pronged immunotherapy strategy for metastatic breast cancer.

Drs. Shipra Gandhi and Pawel Kalinski will lead a Department of Defense-funded clinical trial assessing a three-pronged immunotherapy strategy for metastatic breast cancer.

Our strategy uses a unique combination of biologic agents to make tumors visible to the immune system by making them look like tissue that’s been infected by a virus. Findings from earlier studies lend strong support for assessing this combination even in aggressive and hard-to-treat cancer types.

A team from Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center is moving a new three-part strategy for treating advanced cancers forward with support from a U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) grant to Pawel Kalinski, MD, PhD, Vice Chair for Translational Research and Rustum Family Professor for Molecular Therapeutics and Translational Research at the Buffalo, N.Y.-based cancer center. The four-year, $6.42 million Breakthrough Award (award no. W81XWH-19-1-0674/BC180510) through the DoD’s Breast Cancer Research Program will fund a clinical trial in patients with brain-metastatic breast cancer, to be led by Shipra Gandhi, MD, Assistant Professor of Oncology in the Department of Medicine at Roswell Park.

The phase II trial, slated to open in 2020, would be the first clinical study to assess the effectiveness of a three-pronged strategy combining distinct immunotherapy approaches:

  • A new dendritic-cell treatment vaccine developed by Dr. Kalinski and colleagues in collaboration with Brian Czerniecki, MD, PhD, Chair of the Breast Oncology Department at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida
  • Chemokine modulation using a combination proposed and validated by Dr. Kalinski as an optimized adjuvant for dendritic-cell vaccines, incorporating rintatolimod (brand name Ampligen) and interferon alfa-2b (brand name Intron A)
  • Immune checkpoint inhibition

Alone, these therapies are effective for a limited number of patients, but evidence suggests that together they may help break through a persistent challenge in oncology: how to turn “cold” tumors that don’t respond to existing therapies into “hot” ones that the immune system can be trained to recognize and pursue.

“A major limitation of cancer immunotherapy is that tumors adapt to naturally occurring effector cells by shutting down production of the relevant chemokines in the tumor microenvironment,” says Dr. Kalinski, the overall Principal Investigator for the project. “Our strategy uses a unique combination of biologic agents to make tumors visible to the immune system by making them look like tissue that’s been infected by a virus. We’ve never tested them all together before in patients, but the findings from earlier clinical and preclinical studies lend strong support for assessing this combination even in the most aggressive and hard-to-treat cancer types.”

Three key factors distinguish this platform for combination immunotherapy:

  • The approach is tumor-selective, meaning it can act preferentially to generate responses only in cancer tissues, but not in normal, noncancerous tissue
  • It selectively activates so-called “good” chemokines in the tumor microenvironment and promotes selective attraction of desirable tumor-fighting immune cells, but avoids activating “bad” chemokines that attract undesirable suppressive cells
  • These therapies have been shown in preclinical and clinical trials to be associated with low toxicity and few adverse side effects

The team will study this approach first in patients with localized brain-metastatic breast cancer (BMBC), or breast cancer that has begun to spread to the brain but is not yet widely disseminated. A companion clinical trial in patients with disseminated, leptomeningeal BMBC, to be led by Peter A. Forsyth, MD, Chair of the Neuro-Oncology Department at Moffitt Cancer Center, in collaboration with Dr. Czerniecki, partnering Principal Investigator on the project, will move forward with additional DoD funding of more than $8 million. Both trials will be available to patients at Roswell Park and at Moffitt.

“There are currently no curative treatments for breast cancer that has spread to and grown in the brain, and the options we have often involve significant side effects or harm to healthy tissues. So this is an area of pronounced clinical need,” notes Dr. Gandhi, Principal Investigator on the Roswell Park study. “We’re particularly encouraged to be developing a strategy that has the potential to be effective for patients with various breast cancer subtypes — cancers that are positive for HER2 markers as well as notoriously aggressive triple-negative breast cancers.”

Roswell Park has three other studies in progress assessing some of the component elements of this new therapeutic platform:

  • Celecoxib, Recombinant Interferon Alfa-2b, and Rintatolimod in Treating Patients with Colorectal Cancer Metastatic to the Liver (NCT03403634 – actively recruiting)
  • Aspirin and Rintatolimod With or Without Interferon-alpha 2b in Treating Patients with Prostate Cancer Before Surgery (NCT NCT03899987 – authorized by the FDA and Roswell Park’s Internal Review Board; not yet recruiting)
  • Chemokine Modulation Therapy and Pembrolizumab in Treating Participants with Metastatic Triple-Negative Breast Cancer (NCT NCT03599453 – actively recruiting)

AIM ImmunoTech Inc. has agreed to provide rintatolimod for the new DoD-funded studies in brain-metastatic breast cancer, as well as these ongoing studies.

Dr. Kalinski gratefully acknowledges earlier support for his work through donations to Roswell Park as a critical foundation that allowed him to pursue and attract outside funding for this work.

The new study in patients with BMBC is not yet open to accrual. For information about other clinical trials currently available at Roswell Park, please visit roswellpark.org/clinical-trials, call 1-800-ROSWELL (1-800-767-9355) or contact Roswell Park by email at askroswell@roswellpark.org.
