New White Paper from Gaggle Shares Research and Strategic Approaches for Addressing Increase in Students’ Mental Health Crises

News Image

Day in and day out, we work with districts that are using Gaggle as part of a more holistic program to identify students who need interventions or require additional support services.

Research shows that more than two-thirds of students ages 13 to 18 require some level of professional help for a mental health condition. Yet, a majority of students with a mental health disorder do not receive the treatment they need. To help educators understand and respond to this deepening crisis, Gaggle has published a new white paper that examines research on adolescent mental health and identifies ways in which school districts can effectively identify and support students in need. In addition, during a free webinar on Oct. 10 from 6 to 7 p.m. (EDT), a panel of experts will provide K-12 district leaders with insights into the causes of this crisis and resources districts are using to address the wellbeing of the “whole child.”

The white paper, titled “What Research Says About Students’ Increased Mental Health Crises and How Gaggle Can Be the First Line of Defense for Districts,” reveals research documenting student mental health issues, social trends, and risky student behaviors. It then explores causes of rising mental health concerns, including academic pressure, social media, and childhood trauma.

“Anxiety and depression are on the rise, suicides are increasing, and students are engaging in an alarming number of high-risk behaviors such as substance abuse, sex, violence, and self-harm,” said Jeff Patterson, Gaggle CEO. “The crises in student mental health, particularly in middle and high school, are forcing school districts to become more proactive in the ways they identify and provide services to support students in need.”

To help school administrators and educators take the next step, the white paper outlines solutions that are successfully being implemented in schools, including student support services, school-wide interventions, social-emotional learning programs, and community partnerships. In addition, the paper describes how districts are using tools such as Gaggle to provide visibility into students’ online activity on school-issued devices so they can step in and take appropriate action to protect students from harming themselves and others.

During the Oct. 10th webinar, “Addressing the Crisis in Adolescent Mental Health: How Districts Can Identify and Support Struggling Students,” a panel of education experts will discuss current research and what two districts — one in Texas and one in Idaho — are doing to address these problems. They will discuss topics such as funding additional student services, introducing social-emotional learning, conducting schoolwide interventions, and creating a community-based action plan, among others. The free webinar will be held at edWeb.net and hosted by the School Safety community on edWeb. To register for the webinar, visit https://home.edweb.net/webinar/schoolsafety20191010/.

“Districts understand that improving students’ mental health is as important as keeping students physically safe on campus. As outlined in this white paper and the upcoming webinar, there are a number of ways in which schools are effectively supporting the well-being of the ‘whole child’ and creating a safe physical and emotional learning environment for all students,” said Patterson. “Day in and day out, we work with districts that are using Gaggle as part of a more holistic program to identify students who need interventions or require additional support services. Whether they call Gaggle their first alarm system or their safety net, it provides reassurance that they are doing everything possible to enhance their students’ safety and well-being.”

What Are The Main Events Covered By Collision Insurance

News Image

“Collision car insurance will help you get your car fixed and repair. It is a no-fault policy that every driver should have,” said Russell Rabichev, Marketing Director of Internet Marketing Company.

Cheapquotesautoinsurance.com has released a new blog post that explains the main benefits of using collision car insurance.

For more info and free car insurance quotes, visit http://cheapquotesautoinsurance.com/when-to-use-collision-insurance-coverage/

As the name suggests, collision coverage will reimburse the policyholders which were involved in a collision. However, there are certain limits and exceptions. Drivers should carefully evaluate offers before agreeing to pay. Use brokerage websites, like http://cheapquotesautoinsurance.com/ to get multiple quotes and compare prices.

  • Collision coverage will reimburse the policyholder. Unlike liability coverage, which is designed to reimburse the victims, collision coverage will reimburse the policyholder for the damage caused to his car. Without this coverage, an at-fault driver will have to pay from his own finances to repair his car.
  • Collision coverage will pay even if the other driver caused the accident. Collision insurance is a no-fault policy, meaning that the reimbursement money will be paid, no matter who caused the accident. When the other driver is at-fault, the insurance company will pay for repairs, then will pursue the other driver’s insurer and ask for the money. This is extremely beneficial when a driver is not willing to cooperate. In this scenarios, rates will not be increased.
  • Collision insurance covers some less than common scenarios. It is quite uncommon to flip your own car and damage it. But it may happen and only collision coverage will provide financial support. When the policyholder has 2 or more cars and collides into one of his own vehicles, he will also be reimbursed by this policy.

Cheapquotesautoinsurance.com is an online provider of life, home, health, and auto insurance quotes. How Physical Therapy Can Help Manage Pain and Reduce Opioid Use

No one wants to live in pain. But no one should put their health at risk in an effort to be pain free. Recently, physical therapist Sarah Wenger teamed with the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and YourUpdateTV, to discuss the dangers of prescription opioid use for most non–cancer-related pain treatment and safer alternatives, including physical therapy, for managing pain.

A video accompanying this announcement is available at: https://youtu.be/4NmgVA59n0g.

Doctor-prescribed opioids are appropriate in some cases, but they just mask the pain. Opioid risks include depression, overdose, and addiction, plus withdrawal symptoms when stopping use. More than 20% of Americans live with chronic pain. Prescribing rates continue to remain very high in certain areas across the country – in 16% of U.S. counties, enough opioid prescriptions were dispensed for every person to have one.

Physical therapists treat pain through movement, hands-on care, and patient education—and by increasing physical activity you can also reduce your risk of other chronic diseases. Physical therapists treat people of all ages and abilities and empower them to actively take part in their own care. To ensure the best possible care, physical therapists often work with other members of a health care team.

Proscia® Issued U.S. Patent Covering System and Method of Processing Medical Images for Inspection or Analysis

Proscia, a leading provider of digital pathology software, has been granted U.S. Patent No. 10,346,980 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The patent applies to techniques for processing and analyzing medical images.

For more than 150 years, the standard of care for diagnosing tissue biopsies has been based on a pathologist’s interpretation of patterns using a microscope. This interpretation determines the presence of cancer as well as the aggressiveness of malignancies. Unfortunately, because this human assessment is inherently subjective, it can compromise the accuracy of diagnosis and ultimately, the success of patient outcomes.

Today, specialized scanners capture images of tissue samples prepared on glass slides, giving rise to digital pathology. These whole slide images offer resolution and clarity equivalent to that provided by a microscope and can be viewed on a computer workstation. Significantly, computational models leveraging artificial intelligence can also analyze this image data, generating new insights into how we understand cancer; however, technical limitations pose a barrier to performing this analysis in practice. Specifically, the sizes of whole slide image files, ranging from hundreds of megabytes to dozens of gigabytes, present difficulties for computer systems attempting to manipulate, read, and analyze them.

The computer processing of whole slide images, as well as the retrieval and visualization of image analysis results, in acceptable time frames remains a long-standing problem. U.S. Patent No. 10,346,980 covers broad techniques for delivering much-needed efficiencies for overcoming these challenges and making whole slide imaging a viable component of the traditional pathology workflow.

These techniques allow for the efficient parallelized analysis of whole slide images, as well as the rapid delivery of rich quantitative and spatial information, in a digital pathology viewing environment. Integrating image viewing and analysis visualization supports high-throughput tissue research, helping to drive breakthrough advancements in the fight against cancer. It also enables computational pathology workflows for diagnosis, allowing pathologists to read and analyze cases more rapidly and with higher levels of accuracy.

The newly granted patent reflects Proscia’s commitment to transforming the practice of pathology with intelligent software. Concentriq™, the company’s flagship digital pathology platform, incorporates the proprietary techniques covered in the patent to improve laboratory speed and quality, support personalized medicine, and address the growing demand for pathology services.*

New Technologies Could Enhance Air Force Cancer Screenings

NuView Life Sciences is a clinical stage oncology company located in Park City, Utah, working to improve the way cancer is diagnosed and treated in our modern healthcare system.

Paul Crowe, CEO of NuView Life Sciences, discusses how cancer confirmatory testing can revolutionize the industry.

“We need to look at these alternative ways to effectively diagnose and treat those with disease.”

Questions around the rise in cancers in former Air Force pilots are causing concerns about the role of cockpit radar and current cancer screening technologies used by the military. Those questions are also elevating the need for new cancer detection processes to catch possible tumors sooner and less invasively. Paul Crowe, CEO of NuView Life Sciences, highlights the important of non-invasive confirmatory cancer screenings in light of this recent study.

“These fighter pilots fought for our lives -we need to fight for theirs with confirmatory cancer tests,” said Crowe. “Testing for all is extremely important, but this event especially draws attention to the overwhelming need to relook at cancer screening within the healthcare industry today.”

According to a recent Veterans Affairs study, the number of unique prostate cancer cases in Air Force veterans skyrocketed between fiscal years 2000 and 2018 by 195 percent[1]. While other data suggests that cases of prostate cancer were not significantly different between pilots and non-pilots, the logistics of pilot testing, including when, how often and the technologies used, remain a concern.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), high doses of radiation can lead to cancer, including prostate cancer, which is the leading cause of cancer death among men of all races and populations[2].

Currently, the military’s health care system covers prostate cancer screenings at age 50 for service members with no family history of the disease, and as young as age 40 if there is a family history of the disease in two or more family members and based on the shocking number of cancer cases in former Air Force pilots, now is the time to bring new screening technologies to the market.

The most common prostate screening is a PSA test, which measures the amount of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in your blood. PSA is a protein produced by both cancerous and noncancerous tissue in the prostate, a small gland that sits below the bladder in men.

Dr. Jay Bishoff, a proponent of NuView Life Science’s breakthrough screening technology, confirmed the challenges that exist with the current PSA testing method. “Many things can cause a rise in PSA levels,” said Dr. Bishoff. “PSA testing can be faulty in that it is testing for something that can be raised by many other factors besides prostate cancer such as infection or manipulation.”

The new look of prostate cancer screening is in the works by NuView Diagnostics, a subsidiary of NuView Life Sciences. The company is developing a NV-VPAC1TM technology that may be used for detecting shed cancer cells in voided urine. The technology is an in vitro diagnostic unit dose and works by attaching a fluorophore to an NV-VPAC1TM peptide, allowing the VPAC1 to be visualized microscopically with cancer cells becoming illuminated when viewed under a confocal microscope.

Due to the simple and convenient nature of the NV-VPAC1 urine screen diagnostic test, it has the potential to complement or simply replace the PSA test as part of routine screening of prostate cancer.

“Prostate cancer is the number one killer of men,” Crowe said. “We need to look at these alternative ways to effectively diagnose and treat those with disease.”

More Than Pretty Available Now

I wrote this book to share my heart. We all go through some of the same things in life. Whether its insecurity, anger, sadness, confusion, or fear, we are all trying to figure life out. The book starts with a personal assessment of why you feel what you feel.

From Grammy-winning gospel singer, television star, and radio host Erica Campbell comes MORE THAN PRETTY: Doing the Soul Work that Uncovers Your True Beauty (on sale September 24, 2019; Howard Books; Hardcover; $26.00; 978-1-5011-8866-4), an inspiring and candid book demonstrating that true beauty is found not in external appearances, but in celebrating the person God made you to be.

So many young women struggle with issues of low self-esteem, depression, self-degradation, and other unhealthy habits that manifest on the outside what is happening on the inside. Moreover, the rise of social media and the emphasis on beauty as validation for self-worth have only added fuel to the fire. But Erica Campbell—Grammy-winning gospel star, reality TV star, and nationally-syndicated radio host—believes that we need to redefine beauty. We need to start to see ourselves the way God sees us—beautiful and perfectly made. True beauty, Erica believes, is about embracing who God made you to be.

In MORE THAN PRETTY, she turns the mirror around, reflecting God’s Word, His affirmations, and His design for every woman. This book explores issues of self-esteem, identity, and God’s design for love and intimacy. She is candid about her own struggles, sharing honestly about her battle to feel “good enough” in an industry that fixates on outward appearances.

Covering topics such as being honest about who we truly are, reflecting on what we have internalized about our appearances, uncovering and exposing the plan of the Enemy, and accepting God’s will for your life, Erica offers thoughtful, hard-won wisdom and encouragement to women from all walks of life, helping build confidence in and through the power of God.

“I wrote this book to share my heart. We all go through some of the same things in life. Whether its insecurity, anger, sadness, confusion, or fear, we are all trying to figure life out. The book starts with a personal assessment of why you feel what you feel. What is the source of those feelings? When we realize we can be better—just by knowing ourselves and being honest—that’s life changing. And having God guide us through the process is all we need to be free, happy, and fulfilled. Let’s all do the soul work to uncover who God made us to be and discover the beauty inside us” says Erica Campbell.
