World’s Largest Earthquake Drill on 30th Anniversary of Loma Prieta Quake

News Image

“Anniversaries for big earthquakes often serve as painful reminders of why we need to know how to Drop, Cover, and Hold On when the ground shakes, and know how to financially recover from damage that may be expensive to repair.” CEA CEO, Glenn Pomeroy.

Millions of Californians will practice how to “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” when the ground shakes during the Great California ShakeOut on Thursday, Oct. 17, at 10:17 a.m. This year’s drill will coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake that shook Northern California on Oct. 17, 1989.

Also known as the “World Series earthquake,” the magnitude 6.9 Loma Prieta earthquake was felt extensively in Santa Cruz, Monterey and the San Francisco Bay Area. It was responsible for 63 deaths, 3,757 injuries, and more than $5.9 billion in property damage. Strong ground shaking, liquefaction, and landslides caused significant structural damage, and approximately 16,000 housing units—almost 13,000 in the nine-county San Francisco Bay region alone—were uninhabitable after the earthquake. –

“The Loma Prieta earthquake was a tragedy that caused immense suffering for thousands of California residents,” said California Earthquake Authority CEO Glenn Pomeroy. “Anniversaries for big earthquakes often serve as painful reminders of why we need to know how to Drop, Cover, and Hold On when the ground shakes, and know how to financially recover from damage that may be expensive to repair.”

Most Californians live within 30 miles of an active fault. In 2015, scientists reported there was a greater than 99 percent chance of one or more magnitude 6.7 earthquakes striking California between 2014 and 2043. Magnitude 6.4 and 7.1 earthquakes struck near the Mojave Desert town of Ridgecrest in July 2019, and a magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck near Napa in 2014.

Now more Californians are paying closer attention to their risk for earthquakes, and their potential costs to repair shake damage not covered under a standard homeowner policy. CEA now offers a wide range of coverage options, and has more than 1 million policyholders.

“More than 10 million Californians participated in the Great California ShakeOut last year,” Pomeroy said. “The drill is easy to do. It’s also easy to have a quick conversation with your insurance agent about how to get an earthquake policy. A little preparation can make a big difference if California’s next big earthquake strikes closer to home.”

More information from CEA and other organizations about how to survive and recover from damaging earthquakes that scientists say are possible in the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and San Diego areas can be found at EQHeadquarters.com.

Basepaws, the first company to offer comprehensive, at-home feline DNA testing (think 23andMeow), has announced just in time for the holidays the launch of their new Basepaws Health Report. The new report includes 39 genetic mutations that correspond to 17 genetic health conditions. This vital information now aids more than 47 million US cat households if their beloved feline has tested positive for a genetic variant associated with any of the genetic diseases included in the Basepaws database and has the potential to save lives with prevention and education.

One of the most innovative feline health companies, Basepaws gained immediate acclaim after appearing on ABC’s Shark Tank earlier this year. In its initial offering to cat owners, Basepaws provided breed relativity information alongside with a similarity to the wild cats. Today, the highly anticipated new Health Marker report has launched, which analyzes 39 genetic markers that are associated with 17 genetic diseases, including polycystic kidney disorder (PKD), Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) and retinal degeneration. A complete list of currently included genetic conditions in our Health Markers report is available here.

According to Basepaws Founder and CEO, Anna Skaya, PKD affects about one in three Persian breeds and its related gene pool. PKD is a result of a genetic fault in kidney cell development that leads to multiple cysts forming in the kidneys. HCM is the most common feline heart disease impacting up to 15 percent of all cats. Retinal atrophy is a gene mutation causing severe degeneration of vision impacts millions of cats each year.

“Identifying those key health markers that can immediately help make a difference in the lives of our pets has been a critical step for the development of our testing, and it will truly make an impact on the lives of cats everywhere,” says Skaya. “Cat owners are now armed with advance insights in their Health Report about their cat’s healthcare needs, making it possible to potentially mitigate or even prevent illness down the road. Module Socks, the ultimate dress socks with 15 features to provide comfort, breathability, durability and odor control, are stepping up to continue crowdfunding on Indiegogo InDemand after raising $25,000 – more than five-times the initial campaign goal – on Kickstarter.

“We want to thank all of our Kickstarter backers, who we know will be very pleased with these fashionable, comfortable and super-functional dress socks,” said Module Socks Co-founder Steven Ma. “We hope to reach even more backers on Indiegogo and introduce them to the next level of comfort – whether they are worn at work, at play or in the gym.”

  • A Hand-woven Seam, in which toe seams are meticulously woven together by hand, reducing chafing and scratchiness

The American Academy of Family Physicians Goes Beyond Burnout to Fight Clinical Distress

“At the AAFP, we have always believed that simply focusing on burnout is not as productive as working toward improving well-being and professional satisfaction.”

The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) has recently partnered with the Well-Being Index to assess and combat clinical distress on several dimensions to ensure their members’ well-being.

The Well-Being Index is an online tool that allows participants to measure their distress and well-being over time and receive customized resources based on their results. The validated tool was invented by the Mayo Clinic as a solution to long, unhelpful assessments and measures six dimensions of distress and well-being: meaning in work, likelihood of burnout, severe fatigue, work-life integration, quality of life and suicidal ideation.

The AAFP understands that distress is a growing epidemic in the health care industry and is dedicated to prioritizing its members’ well-being. In fact, the World Health Organization has recently labeled burnout—one dimension of distress—as an official medical diagnosis.

Statistics show that one-of-four workers in the United States experience professional burnout. In the health care setting, this figure climbs to nearly 50 percent. The AAFP has chosen to go beyond burnout and measure well-being on several dimensions as part of their holistic wellness program.

“At the AAFP, we have always believed that simply focusing on burnout is not as productive as working toward improving well-being and professional satisfaction,” said Clif Knight, M.D., the senior vice president for education at the Academy. “By utilizing the Well-being Index, family physicians will be able to gauge their current status. They can then use the information from the index to serve as motivation for seeking personal improvements in well-being.”

By partnering with the Well-Being Index, the AAFP has joined hundreds of hospitals and organizations worldwide in taking the initiative to fight against distress. Academy members will now have the opportunity to anonymously track their well-being over time, compare their results to peers’ and national averages, provide feedback and receive customized local and national resources.

Aircare International to Provide Simulated Emergencies at NBAA-BACE

https://www.prweb.com/

FACTS VIII

Aircare International’s FACTS Training has been an industry leader in emergency procedures training programs for business aviation crewmembers and passengers for nearly four decades.

Through a combination of experiential and didactic learning, Aircare FACTS employs the use of unique training devices, such as full-motion cabin simulators, to immerse students in realistic emergency scenarios. In addition to fixed devices at each training center, Aircare’s mobile simulator fleet allows training to be conducted onsite at the customer’s location.

Aircare will have one such mobile simulator, FACTS VIII, on display and provide demonstrations during the 2019 NBAA-BACE in Las Vegas. Attendees who experience a FACTS VIII demonstration will experience simulated emergency scenarios and could be subject to turbulence, hard landings or even a water ditching.

Hydraulic lifts and “floats” allow the simulator to mimic aircraft movements and provide an unmatched level of realism. Each simulator is outfitted with real working emergency equipment including fire extinguishers, life vests and life rafts, allowing participants to put learned procedures into action.

Crewmembers and passengers alike can benefit from Aircare FACTS simulator training. “We can do things to our full-motion simulators that simply cannot be replicated on a parked aircraft,” says Brian Hayvaz, Vice President of Operations, Aircare FACTS Training. “Being mobile with our training devices allows us to be nimble in fulfilling customer needs and building programs that fit operational requirements. We encourage anyone attending BACE to swing by the sim – let us show you what we can do.”

Aircare is exhibiting at the 2019 NBAA-BACE convention at booth C7231. The simulator can be located just outside of the Las Vegas Convention Center at IS1200.
