Loma Linda University Health study finds diet rich in non-indispensable amino acids is better for cardiovascular health

Non-indispensable amino acids

Non-indispensable amino acids are found in foods like pumpkin seeds, walnuts, lentils and soybeans.

There is a growing interest in protein and amino acids for cardiovascular health, in particular as plant and animal protein sources are concerned.

A study conducted by researchers in California and France has found that intakes of amino acids largely consisting of indispensable amino acids, such as those found in animal protein, are associated with a sharp increased risk of heart disease, while intakes rich in so-called non-indispensable amino acids, richer in plant protein, are beneficial for the human heart.

The study — which was recently published online by the International Journal of Epidemiology — found that people with a high intake of indispensable amino acids experienced a 60% increase in cardiovascular disease (CVD), while people who consumed large amounts of some non-indispensable amino acids experienced a 35% reduction in CVD.

The study, titled, “Patterns of amino acids intake are strongly associated with cardiovascular mortality, independently of the sources of protein,” was a joint project of researchers from Loma Linda University School of Public Health in California and INRA and AgroParisTech in Paris, France.

The study included data from 80,000 participants and is the first of its kind to examine overall patterns of amino acid intake. The intake of amino acids has been studied in the literature, but almost always in isolation. Amino acids come from protein, so the levels of their intake are interconnected, resulting in patterns of intake with likely complex effects.

This study built on a previous groundbreaking study published last year from the same consortium of researchers. That study had reported that proteins from meat were inversely associated with cardiovascular mortality, whereas proteins from nuts and seeds were healthy. Combining those results with the detailed amino acid approach in this new study, the authors could conclude that a part of the effect of the proteins could indeed originate from their composition in amino acids.

Amino acids are building blocks for protein, and the so-called indispensable amino acids — found in foods such as eggs, cheese, and poultry — have long been considered as the most important because they are strictly required for the body to synthesize protein. In contrast, non-indispensable amino acids — in foods like pumpkin seeds, walnuts, lentils and soybeans — are classically deemed of little importance, because they do not limit protein synthesis. However, those amino acids are not just building blocks for protein as they are also involved in many other biological processes with potential impact on vascular health.

Gary Fraser, MB ChB, PhD, from Loma Linda University, and François Mariotti, PhD, from AgroParisTech and INRA, served as co-principal investigators.

“There is a growing interest in protein and amino acids for cardiovascular health, in particular as plant and animal protein sources are concerned,” Fraser said. “Reports regarding amino acids have been sparse and largely fragmented so far.” He added that he and Mariotti have long suspected that some amino acids could protect against heart and vascular disease, whereas others might increase risk.

Mariotti said nutritionists have traditionally defined protein quality as the ability for dietary protein to be used efficiently for making new protein in the body, which is supposed to be mainly influenced by their content in indispensable amino acids; but protein quality should also be considered with regards to cardiovascular health, especially when cardiovascular disease rather than denutrition is the health burden in some countries. Mariotti said these new findings suggest the dietary intake of many indispensable amino acids (such as the well-known BCAA [branched-chain amino acids], lysine and methionine) could indeed be detrimental, whereas that of other non-indispensables amino acids (such as arginine, glycine and aspartate/asparagine) could be beneficial.

The authors insist that these associations seem largely mediated by the specific effects of the amino acids and not by potential confounders such as patterns of protein food intakes and related dietary patterns (such as fat intake). They however recognize that, as in any observational study, we cannot be sure that the associations are not, in part, resulting from residual confounding with other strongly influential dietary and lifestyle factors. The model used was intended to account for all confounders and analyze the extent to which amino acids mediate or explain the relations found.

Fraser said the study leaves other questions open for further investigation, such as identifying the factors other than amino acids that convey the other part of the association between dietary protein type and cardiovascular health. This could be phytochemicals tightly associated with the amino acids found in foods such as nuts and seeds.

The New England Center for Children Honors Andrew Roberts as 2019 Outstanding Alumnus of the Year

https://www.prweb.com/

The New England Center for Children

“Andrew has achieved much in his young life and is a testament to the effectiveness of early intensive behavioral intervention in transforming the lives of children with autism,” said Vincent Strully, President and CEO of NECC. “We are proud to honor him as our outstanding alumnus this year.”

The New England Center for Children® (NECC®), a global leader in education and research for children with autism, announced today that Andrew Roberts has been named NECC’s 2019 Outstanding Alumnus of the Year. This award is bestowed upon NECC alumni who demonstrate inspiring personal, vocational and/or academic achievement. Andrew, 16-years-old, was a home-based student at NECC from 2005 to 2006 and today is an aspiring sportswriter and sophomore at Algonquin Regional High School in Northborough, Mass.

The award will be presented at NECC’s annual Children of Promise Gala (http://www.necc.org/gala), to be held on Friday, November 15 at the InterContinental Boston.

“Andrew has achieved much in his young life and is a testament to the effectiveness of early intensive behavioral intervention in transforming the lives of children with autism,” said Vincent Strully, President and CEO of The New England Center for Children. “All of us at NECC are inspired by Andrew’s story. We are proud to honor him as our outstanding alumnus this year.”

When Andrew was a toddler, his parents had difficulty transitioning him to solid foods. They started to feel that his developmental progress was stagnating. A speech and feeding therapist told Andrew’s parents he might never speak. At around 20 months, Andrew was diagnosed with autism and his parents enrolled him in NECC’s early intensive behavioral intervention (EIBI) home-based program. Andrew responded remarkably well to early treatment and transitioned into public school with NECC support.

Around age 5, Andrew developed a strong affinity for sports that started with collecting baseball cards and learning the players’ numbers and the lineup. He has turned his self-described obsession with sports into a budding sports writing career with his blog “Boston Sports Mania” (https://andrewr1008.wordpress.com/). Andrew’s inspiring story and blog caught the attention of the Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism after he wrote a post about learning how to ski in a Flutie Foundation Ski Weekend at Waterville Valley. The Foundation presented him with a Shining Star Award in 2018 and made him a Flutie Fellow that same year, reporting on the U.S.A. Special Olympics Games in Seattle and other events on behalf of the Foundation.

“Andrew has done incredible work throughout his fellowship. He has already accomplished so much as a sports personality, and he is truly deserving of the NECC Outstanding Alumnus honor. We can’t wait to see what’s next for Andrew!” said Nick Savarese, Executive Director of The Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism.

Andrew was a keynote presenter at the 2019 Federation for Children with Special Needs’ Visions of Community conference. He has been featured in news coverage on WCVB-TV ABC Boston and the Boston Herald, including serving as a guest columnist. This summer he interned at WEEI-Boston Sports Radio and the Worcester Bravehearts. His sports research has been featured on 98.5 The Sports Hub. Andrew has guest-announced at Fenway Park and most recently did work for the Bruins Foundation. He has received honorable mentions for the Will McDonough Writing Contest for two years in a row.

“We are very proud of Andrew and his tremendous progress. The early support he had from The New England Center for Children put him on this incredible path,” said Ken Roberts, Andrew’s father.

Andrew is thriving in high school. He writes for the school newspaper, announces football games on local cable access TV, hosts his own radio show and created a web series the last two years called “Gonk Knocks” which chronicles the Algonquin Regional High School football team during training camp.

“I continue to be amazed by Andrew’s accomplishments. NECC was integral in helping him reach a place we always hoped he would. To have Andrew recognized as NECC’s 2019 Outstanding Alumnus of the Year at the Children of Promise Gala is a proud moment not just for our family, but also for Andrew and all those who believed in him,” said Debra Roberts, Andrew’s mother.

“I am honored to receive this award from The New England Center for Children,” said Andrew. “I don’t think I’d be where I am today without the help of NECC and my BCBA teacher, Stacey Croeber. NECC gave me the foundation to work toward my dream of being a sportswriter.”

Law Enforcement Gun Ranges Discover Little Known Approach for Using Forfeiture Funds to Pay for Firing Range Improvements and Equipment

Gun Range Cleaning

You Operate a Firing Range. We Get the Lead Out!

MT2 Firing Range Services is leading the fight nationwide to protect police officers and other shooters from the hazards of lead poisoning at gun ranges.

James M. Barthel, President of MT2 Firing Range Services (MT2) said, “We have a corporate initiative of annually supporting our brothers and sisters in blue. Our core vision and mission is to provide premier specialty environmental products and services with a higher purpose and MT2 personnel are passionate about cleaning and restoring our environment, protecting people from the hazards of lead, and in serving and protecting those who serve and protect us, whether in the military or in law enforcement.”

Shooting ranges understand the importance of properly maintaining their range as it relates to lead and lead waste, but it is often difficult to obtain budget approval for vital activities needed for operating, maintaining and improving a law enforcement firing range.

In a recent news story by the Indiana Daily Reporter titled: “Forfeitures provide police departments with extra funds,” they report that: “for cash and other assets taken from people who have been targeted in criminal investigations, law enforcement agencies are allowed to keep the valuables and use them as a revenue stream to supplement their budgets. Federal laws forbid the county to use any seized funds to supplant a county budget, so any forfeiture, literally, is bonus money.”

Firing range improvements and equipment fall under this category and allow a Law Enforcement gun ranges across the country to use these funds for lead reclamation and maintenance.

But in today’s business environment, there are critical considerations that must be understood when selecting a lead maintenance contractor because there are EPA and OSHA regulations that must be adhered to before, during, and after the project. MT2 has prepared a firing range industry report that provides all of the questions to consider before selecting a firing range services contractor to hire.

This report can be downloaded at http://www.MT2FiringRangeServices.com

MT2 has completed firing range clean-ups for these noted law enforcement agencies as well as dozens more: NYPD, Denver Police Department, Seattle Police Department, Phoenix Police Department, Austin Police Department, Riverside County Sheriff, Gwinnett County Firing Range Complex, Pendleton Police Department, Maryland Firearms Training Facility, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Apopka Police Department, Markham Park, City of Kissimmee Firing Range, Winter Garden Police Department Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Delray Beach PD.

MT2 has:

  • Returned $5M in lead reclamation to clients
  • Completed 2,500 ranges since 2000 in all 50 States
  • Recovered over 15,000,000 pounds of lead
  • Treated over 10,000,000 tons of lead

…while working closely with range owners to implement firing range Best Management Practices (BMPs) to protect shooters and the environment.

“We are proud to serve and protect those in law enforcement and the military that serve and protect us,” stated James M. Barthel, MT2 CEO.

About MT2 Firing Range Services:

Military Wide “Solvent” Use May Be A Primary Cause of Thousands of Leukemia Diagnoses, Deaths of U.S. Veterans

Veterans deserve to know all of the facts, receive proper care, and be fairly compensated, says Trauco. Solvent in its varying recipes contains a deadly, cancer-causing chemical ethyl benzene.

During the past decade, one of America’s top medical advocates has witnessed a connection and pattern of the military’s use of “Solvent” (a chemical, cleaning agent) with blood diseases leading to Leukemia in a growing number of U.S. service men and women.

In response to this generational health crisis, long time Patient Advocate and 40 plus year career Oncology Nurse, Gail Trauco, R.N., BSN-OCN is leading a team of medical and legal experts to help U.S. veterans and their families. Solvent’s ties to Leukemia represents a shocking trend and dirty little secret that has quietly devastated American families. Trauco and her team of committed professionals are out to advocate for veterans and families of decedents restitution nationwide.

“Beginning about seven years ago, it was noted during my travels to key hospitals across the country that there were a number of veterans every month being diagnosed as new cases of leukemia,” says Trauco who has helped more than 5,000 families through critical health events and medical billing nightmares. “Some of the veterans originally had polycythemia vera (PCV) or myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) which progressed to leukemia. A physician at the VA in Shreveport, Louisiana told one family that I spoke with that he believed “Solvent” was the cause of her husband’s Leukemia.”

According to Trauco, Solvent has differing “recipes” for its mixture dependent upon intent for use and branch of the military. For example, Air Force mechanics used Solvent known as P-D-680, Type II. It was considered a rather mundane product sold in hardware stores as mineral spirits and is even currently available for purchase on Amazon. The Air Force have long required that military jet engine bearings and other parts be degreased and cleaned with this clear, aromatic liquid. It has also been used as a general all-purpose cleaner and Solvent exposure by service men and women has been both transdermal and by inhalation.

Retired Lieutenant General Russell Honore, who served as the 33rd commanding general of the U.S. First Army at Fort Gillem, Georgia and is best known for serving as commander of Joint Task Force Katrina responsible for coordinating military relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina, is a supporter of Trauco and her team helping U.S. Veterans. General Honore recalls Solvent was used to clean, pistols, rifles, machine guns, mortars, and used routinely in the Army and Marine Corps.

“Excessive exposure to benzene has been known for more than a century to damage the bone marrow resulting in decreases in the numbers of circulating blood cells, and ultimately, aplastic anemia,” writes Robert Snyder in the August 2012 edition of The International Journal of Environment Research and Public Health. “Of more recent vintage has been the appreciation that an alternative outcome of benzene exposure has been the development of one or more types of leukemia.” https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3447593

The Environmental Protection Agency defines exposure as: You can be exposed to a substance only when you are in contact with it. You may be exposed by breathing, eating, or drinking the substance, or by skin contact. Various factors include the dose (how much), the duration (how long), and how you are in contact with it. You must also consider any other chemicals you are exposed to and your age, sex, diet, family traits, lifestyle, and state of health.

According to the Public Health Service Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry in an August 2007 report titled “Traditional Epidemiological Studies of the Carcinogenic Effects of Benzene Exposure” concurs on the connection between benzene and leukemia. ”Long-term exposure to benzene can cause cancer of the blood-forming organs. This condition is called leukemia. Exposure to benzene has been associated with development of a particular type of leukemia called acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The Department of Health and Human Services has determined that benzene is a known carcinogen (can cause cancer). Both the International Agency for Cancer Research and the EPA have determined that benzene is carcinogenic to humans.” https://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/toxprofiles/tp3.pdf
