YMCA to acquire Nexus Youth and Families to tackle youth homelessness, mental illness

“By acquiring Nexus, we can serve more youth and young adults, find more efficiencies, and strengthen our presence in South King County so all people, especially youth, can reach their fullest selves in mind, body, and spirit,” said Loria Yeadon, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Seattle.

The YMCA of Greater Seattle voted to acquire Nexus Youth and Families, a nonprofit organization that has provided youth homelessness and behavioral health services in Auburn and South King County for over 45 years. The acquisition will be finalized in the coming months to ensure that youth and their families in South King County continue to receive the quality services.

Nexus approached the Y with this opportunity based on both organization’s reputations, the relationship between the two agencies, the Y’s longstanding presence in South King County, and aligned missions. The Y is the largest provider of housing and holistic services for young adults experiencing homelessness in King County. In 2018, they provided behavioral health and crisis support to over 2,000 youth and their families.

“Homelessness is on the forefront of everyone’s mind. Our work and the work of so many others has led to a decline in the number of youth and young adults experiencing homelessness. We’re so glad to see more young people housed, but we still need to do more. By acquiring Nexus Youth and Families, we can serve more youth and young adults, find more efficiencies, and strengthen our presence in South King County so all people, especially youth, can reach their fullest selves in mind, body, and spirit,” said Loria Yeadon, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Seattle.

The acquisition comes at a time when many young people struggle to find homes and resources. According to All Home’s 2019 Count Us In report, over 1,000 unaccompanied youth and young adults in King County experience homelessness on any given night, with over half of them living on the streets. Simultaneously, death by suicide among teens and young adults has reached its highest level since 2000, according to the American Medical Association.

“Being able to provide our much needed services in South King County is the top priority of the Nexus’ Board of Directors,” said Lori Coppenrath, Nexus Board Chair. “I have 100 percent confidence that the acquisition between the Y and Nexus will mean better outcomes for those we serve, enhance our staff’s experience, and create collaboration that provides the best services for those who need us most in South King County. It’s a no brainer.”

Earlier this year, the Y partnered with Nexus to build a new first of its kind facility in Auburn that addresses youth and young adult homelessness. The new facility, named New Arcadia, will provide transitional housing for 15 young adults and provide emergency shelter and holistic services for 12 more. The housing portion will include storage space and common areas, a community kitchen, office and conference spaces, and a drop-in center during the day. The Y and Nexus broke ground on New Arcadia in June 2019 and expects to open the facility in spring 2020.

Dentist, Dr. Kevin Hogan, Helps North Charleston, SC Patients Improve Sleep and Overall Health with Sleep Apnea Treatments

Dr. Kevin Hogan, Dentist in North Charleston, SC

Dentist, Dr. Kevin Hogan, Provides Sleep Apnea Treatment in North Charleston, SC

It’s important to treat sleep apnea because it can cause patients to be super fatigued or lead to hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, CBA and all kinds of medical problems that could be prevented.

Dr. Kevin Hogan, respected dentist in North Charleston, SC, offers patients who have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, multiple solutions to get a healthier and better night’s sleep. Sleep apnea treatment helps alleviate some of the prominent causes of a restless night and can help patients sleep better, cease snoring and improve their overall health. The practice, Smiles By Hogan, offers both custom oral appliance therapy and CPAP machine therapy as effective forms of sleep apnea treatment.

“It’s important to treat sleep apnea because it can cause patients to be super fatigued or lead to hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, CBA and all kinds of medical problems that could be prevented,” says Dr. Hogan. “By treating sleep apnea at any stage, you improve the patient’s quality of life.”

Sleep apnea is a serious health condition that causes breathing to halt throughout the night, which deprives the brain of oxygen. Patients suffering from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) often have excessive soft tissues in the back of their neck and throat, which fall into the airway while the patient sleeps. When these tissues block the airway, oxygen is no longer able to easily get to the body. This is the primary cause of constant, loud snoring and often the reason patients wake up frequently throughout the night gasping for air. Common symptoms of sleep apnea include:

  • Morning headaches
  • Daytime fatigue
  • Falling asleep accidentally during the day
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Incessant loud snoring
  • Waking up repeatedly throughout the night short of breath

Trained dentists like Dr. Hogan can offer sleep apnea treatments that prevent this airway obstruction and allow patients to breath freely at night. The most common form of sleep apnea treatment is a CPAP machine. This machine provides a mask that is worn over the face at night. The machine continually forces air into the throat, allowing patients to receive the oxygen they need.

Some patients prefer a sleep apnea treatment without CPAP because of the bulky nature of the CPAP device. For these patients, Dr. Hogan offers a more subtle sleep apnea treatment with a customized oral appliance. This appliance is a small mouthguard that is worn over the teeth at night which gently repositions the jaw into alignment to prevent the soft tissues from blocking the airway. This sleep apnea treatment is preferred by many patients due to its ease of use, small size and effective treatment results.

Dr. Hogan is a dentist with years of experience in providing sleep apnea treatment in North Charleston, SC and the surrounding areas. Those interested in being evaluated for a solution to sleep apnea are encouraged to contact the practice by calling 843-216-0908 or visiting http://www.smilesbyhogan.com.

Designs for Health Sees a Ketogenic Diet as an Alternative that May Benefit People with Type 2 Diabetes

A leading practitioner-channel dietary supplement company

A ketogenic diet will help the body become more metabolically flexible and able to efficiently generate energy from the ketones produced.

Designs For Health (DFH) – a leading practitioner-channel dietary supplement company, is using its science-based nutrition philosophy to raise awareness about the critical role of a healthy lifestyle in the prevention of type 2 diabetes, which research suggests can also help reverse its progress. This is very encouraging, especially since 30 million Americans have diabetes, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CVC).

Low carbohydrate and ketogenic diets are a slam-dunk for type 2 diabetes, assures Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS) and DFH spokesperson Amy Berger, who suggests that “If you have a condition defined by high blood sugar, one potential solution is self-evident: avoid foods that raise blood sugar the most. For most people, this means refined sugar and sugar in general, but for many it also includes starchy foods that might be generally wholesome and nutritious, but which are simply too high in carbohydrates for people with type 2 diabetes.”

Berger notes that the American Diabetes Association, in a consensus report published in May 2019, acknowledged that, “Reducing overall carbohydrate intake for individuals with diabetes has demonstrated the most evidence for improving glycemia and may be applied in a variety of eating patterns that meet individual needs and preferences.”

Jason Bosley-Smith, MS, LDN, CNS, FDN and Director of Education at Designs for Health (DFH), explains that “If you have been diagnosed with diabetes or if your physician has shared that your blood work indicates a pre-diabetic state, transitioning to a ketogenic diet will reduce high blood sugar levels by lowering the carbohydrates you consume. With less sugar and carbohydrates being introduced into your body, your cells will begin responding better to hormonal signals that help regulate your metabolism,” adding that, “this may help you shift away from insulin resistance – a physiological state where your body is unable to effectively utilize sugar or glucose for energy production.”

As an alternative, Bosley-Smith explains that a ketogenic diet will help the body become more “metabolically flexible” and able to efficiently generate energy from the ketones produced. This insulin resistant state is associated not only with diabetes, but also with weight gain and other complications that accompany it. Research indicates that, while not necessarily the primary goal of a ketogenic diet, many individuals lose weight when they reduce and restrict carbohydrate intake and adopt a keto approach.

For this regime, individuals should focus on low-carb meals featuring non-starchy vegetables, moderate amounts of protein from meats and poultry, and plenty of healthy fats from foods such as olive and coconut oil, fish, and nuts. There are also great keto snack choices that will help curb sweet cravings. DFH recently launched their KTO-360TM product line made with the keto-friendly, next-generation sweetener, Allulose.

There has been progress around the disease nationwide; researchers reported earlier this year that new cases of diagnosed diabetes dropped 35% while no increase was detected in total cases (CVC Report). Part of this is due to increasing awareness, changes in diet and physical activity, as well as diagnostic and screening practices.

Leading Community Organizations Join to Present “The Full Case for NY Surrogacy Reform”

Leading Community Organizations Join to Present “The Full Case for NY Surrogacy Reform”

“We put together a program to offer medical, legal, ethical and historical perspectives on the debate surrounding the NY surrogacy reform…”

On Friday, November 8th, 2019, leading community organizations are holding in New York City an unprecedented event where the core ethical issues associated with surrogacy legislation will be tackled in a frank and thorough way. The co-sponsors for this event include Men Having Babies, RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association, Family Equality Council, Equality NY, Stonewall Democrats of NYC, and The Academy of Adoption and Assisted Reproduction Attorneys.

The Child Parent Security Act (CPSA), which will reverse the ban on compensated surrogacy in New York State, was passed by the NY Senate earlier this year, and is likely to come up for a vote in the Assembly in the 2020 legislative session.

Several organizations that support the reform have assembled more than 30 speakers to help answer core questions such as: how do you justify the payment of compensation to gestational carriers, and what is this compensation for? What does academic research show about medical and psychological outcomes for the parties involved? What do medical, psychological, and legal experts recommend? How do surrogates and their families feel about the proposed bill? And what is the position of leading human rights organizations?

“While we think it is the most comprehensive and thoughtful surrogacy legislation ever drafted, the CPSA also faced criticism and claims that not enough discussion has taken place about ethical concerns,” said Ron Poole-Dayan, the Executive Director of Men Having Babies, an organization that offers education and financial assistance to thousands of prospective gay fathers. “Therefore, we put together a program to offer medical, legal, ethical and historical perspectives on this debate, a review of relevant research findings, and a thorough analysis of how we think the proposed surrogacy legislation addresses core ethical issues & essential best practices,” he said.

“We know firsthand how complicated gestational surrogacy can be when advocating for this family building option with lawmakers,” said Barbara Collura, the President and CEO of RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association. “This forum will be an excellent opportunity to take an in-depth look at the impact of current and proposed policy in New York.”

Among the speakers are several surrogates, their young adult children, children born through surrogacy, academic researchers, representatives of community organizations and international human rights organizations, and leading legal, mental health and medical experts.

Organizers are inviting lawmakers, community activists, professionals, academicians, students, parents and prospective parents to listen and offer feedback. More than 100 people already registered to attend.

Senator Brad Hoylman, who led the approval of the CPSA in the NY Senate, said: “The Trump Administration recently announced new rules to allow adoption agencies to discriminate against LGBTQ parents. For many in the LGBTQ community, gestational surrogacy could be the only option to start a family. Yet for decades, families like mine have had to travel out-of-state for gestational surrogacy. It’s long past time New York ends the antiquated ban on gestational surrogacy so LGBTQ couples and people experiencing infertility can build their families here at home. I’m grateful to Men Having Babies for hosting this important event, and I’m committed to passing my bill to legalize gestational surrogacy in this year’s legislative session.”

The program will take place Friday, November 8th 4:00 to 8:00pm, at the Stewart Hotel, 371 Seventh Ave, New York City, NY 10001.

Go to menhavingbabies.org/advocacy/forum/ny/ for registration and additional information.

Press inquiries: Contact Shelly Marsh, Marketing Director of Men Having Babies shelly(at)menhavingbabies.org / 714-515-9602. Interviews with community organization representatives, experts, surrogates, and parents can be arranged by request.

The Best Tips On How To Lower Car Insurance Rates

News Image

“Drivers can easily obtain cheaper insurance rates if they apply several smart tips. For more ways and strategies that can help drivers lower their insurance premiums, visit our website”, said Russell Rabichev, Marketing Director of Internet Marketing Company.

Lower-auto-insurance.com has launched a new blog post that presents several smart tips that can help drivers get cheaper car insurance.

For more info and free quotes, please visit: http://lower-auto-insurance.com/tips-keeping-car-insurance-rates-low/

In the past years, the price of car insurance has continued to raised constantly. Obtaining cheaper car insurance is not impossible for drivers that know what they are doing.

To get cheaper car insurance, drivers are recommended to follow the next tips:

  • Look for discounts. Policyholders can check what discounts are available at their insurers and for which ones they are eligible. Usually, insurance companies will provide discounts for installed safety devices, low mileage, good drivers, good students, or bundling policies.
  • Keep a clean driving record. Insurance companies will reward drivers that manage to stay ticket-free and accident-free for a certain period of time. Some insurers will provide a discount after three years, while others will wait even five years for a driver to keep his driving record clean.
  • Buy the right car. If a driver wants to pay cheaper insurance rates, then he should try avoiding insuring expensive sports vehicles, limousines or muscle cars. Instead, they should try to insure a slightly used vehicle that has a high safety rating and several safety devices already installed.
  • Maintain a good credit score. In most states, the laws allow the insurers to take the drivers’ credit score into account when they determine their insurance rates. Insurance companies claim they found a correlation between the drivers’ credit score and the chances for them to file for a claim. As a result, drivers with a poor credit score are more likely to file for a claim. For this reason, policyholders with poor credit score will pay more on their premiums compared to those that have good or excellent credits score.
  • Consider dropping full coverage. Policyholders that drive older vehicles, should consider dropping full coverage in certain situations. For example, if a vehicle’s value is less than ten insurance rates payments, then keeping full coverage on that vehicle Is useless.
  • Compare online quotes. It is recommended to compare online car insurance quotes at least two times per year. By doing so, drivers can check if their current insurance provider is still offering competitive insurance premiums or not.
