2019 Investigator of the Year Award Goes to Mercury Insurance’s Mark Di Lauro

News Image

I absolutely enjoy every aspect of this job – the investigation into the claim, the pursuit of fraud, getting into the mind of what the insured is doing, and ultimately protecting our insured from those who are engaging in criminal activity.

Mark Di Lauro, a member of the Mercury Insurance Special Investigations Unit (SIU) team, was recently named the 2019 Investigator of the Year by the Southern California Chapter of International Association of Special Investigation Units (IASIU). The highly prestigious IASIU Awards are given on an annual basis to individuals who have displayed outstanding investigative services to their organizations, as well as to the industry as a whole.

Di Lauro, who has been an investigator for Mercury’s SIU for nearly three years, was recognized for his work examining a policyholder’s reported water loss. His investigation revealed that the loss had, in fact, been staged and his findings saved Mercury nearly $50,000. Additionally, the policyholder was sentenced to 17 years in prison after a criminal trial and ordered to pay more than $900,000 in restitution to various insurance carriers.

“I am very proud of the award,” said Di Lauro. “I would like to think that it not only encompasses this particular claim, but a culmination of claims that we investigate that result in millions of dollars of savings for our policyholders each year. I firmly believe that this was a team award for Mercury SIU and not just my individual award.

“I absolutely enjoy every aspect of this job – the investigation into the claim, the pursuit of fraud, getting into the mind of what the insured is doing, and ultimately protecting our insured from those who are engaging in criminal activity.”

Mercury’s SIU, which was founded in 1978, consists of 40 seasoned investigators in 11 states who work to catch the fraudulent claims filed every year by white-collar con artists, shady doctors and lawyers, and even the occasional celebrity. Insurance fraud, the second most costly white-collar crime in America behind tax evasion, accounts for at least 10 percent of property and casualty claims, and cost citizens billions of dollars each year. The SIU exists to prevent phony payouts and exaggerated claims stemming from staged accidents, arson, auto and identity theft, and padding of medical expenses, to keep rates low for Mercury policyholders.

The public can do its part to help lower insurance costs by reporting suspicious activity to the National Insurance Crime Bureau.

About Mercury Insurance

Mercury Insurance (MCY) is a multiple-line insurance organization predominantly offering personal automobile, homeowners and business insurance through a network of independent agents in Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Texas and Virginia. Since 1962, Mercury has specialized in offering quality insurance at affordable prices. For more information, visit http://www.mercuryinsurance.com or Facebook and follow the company on Twitter.

About the Mercury Special Investigations Unit

Whether it’s a staged car crash, home arson or exaggerated injuries and suspect medical billing, criminals are creating new ways to cheat their insurance company, necessitating the existence of groups like the Mercury Insurance SIU – the CSI of the insurance industry.

Mercury’s SIU was founded in 1978, becoming one of the first companies to create an investigative department to combat insurance fraud. Since its inception, the SIU, which employs more than 40 seasoned investigators nationwide, has exposed thousands of fraudulent auto, home and medical claims, saving policyholders millions of dollars annually. The SIU mission: prevent phony payouts, which helps maintain low premiums for Mercury customers.

Wavee Enhances the Morning Routine with the World’s Only Toothbrush Smart Speaker System, Now Available on Kickstarter

News Image

More and more, people typically use their weak phone speaker or have to hassle with bringing a Bluetooth speaker in and out of the bathroom. With Wavee, they will never run into that problem again…whether at home or when on the road.

Wavee, a three-speed sonic-wave toothbrush combined with smart speaker technology that delivers rich amplified sound, is now available on Kickstarter. Wavee empowers customers with their favorite music, podcasts and audiobooks – and features Amazon Alexa compatibility.

“Wavee was created to enhance the everyday routine of oral care, something all of us have to do day-in and day-out,” said Wavee Co-founder & CEO Jonathan Semira. “Wavee works double duty in the bathroom, with a smart speaker charging base that allows you to maximize downtime by streaming your favorite playlists in omni-directional sound, while the separate electric toothbrush treats your smile to a brilliant cleaning.”

Semira came up with the idea of Wavee by his own recognition that there was a void when it came to enjoying entertainment during his morning routine. He says Wavee allows everyone to maximize their time, which is commonly up to 60 minutes a daily or more, that users spend prepping for the day ahead.

“We researched the oral hygiene market and realized there’s a real need for this ground-breaking product, especially among millennials,” he said. “More and more, people typically use their weak phone speaker or have to hassle with bringing a Bluetooth speaker in and out of the bathroom. With Wavee, they will never run into that problem again…whether at home or when on the road.”

At its core, Wavee is a set of separate devices that perform important functions within a person’s daily routine – an electric toothbrush that provides optimal teeth cleaning through a sonic wave movement brush head backed by a powerful three-speed motor, along with an accompanying smart speaker that delivers rich, amplified sound allowing customers to curate their own content and entertainment.

“Through technology and innovative design, our team fused these two functions together to create the market’s first electric toothbrush and integrated smart speaker product,” Semira said. “This opens up an entirely new and enhanced user experience, with Wavee providing the missing link to turn any common bathroom space into a secluded haven.”

The smart speaker includes a proprietary charging dock for the brush, both of which are charged with one single USB-C Port connection. The Wavee’s built-in lithium-ion rechargeable battery lasts up to 25 days on a single charge, allowing for minimal charging time and portability for travel.

When it comes to dental hygiene, the Wavee brush head features soft bristles designed to clean germs, bacteria and remove plaque – while being gentle on the gums.

Wavee’s full line of features include:

  •     An LED Light
  •     A Removable Cleaning Sleeve
  •     An Easy Wipe Top Surface
  •     Inductive Charging
  •     An IPX 5 – Water Resistant Speaker
  •     Superior Voice Pick-Up
  •     Amazon Alexa Compatibility through HSP
  •     A Wall Mountable Feature
  •     A two-minute timer with 30 second intervals for cleaning the four quadrants of the mouth
  •     Three Brushing Modes – (Standard (41,000rpm), White (48,000rpm), Sensitive (33,000rpm)
  •     Eight-Hour Playback
  •     A 48,000 RPM Motor
  •     Omnidirectional Sound
  •     Bluetooth 5.0 Compatibility

As part of the brand’s goal to provide a ‘total’ oral care experience, Wavee will also offer supplementary products such as toothpaste, floss and teeth whitening strips, all of which are available through a subscription package with the Wavee product.

For more information and to purchase Wavee at an early-bird discount during crowdfunding, visit the Wavee Campaign Page on Kickstarter.

Minalex Corporation Lights Up the Night for DeepLight Labs

Minalex was called in to help DeepLight Labs with its signature showstopper product, “The DeepLight,” a programmable art installation piece comprised of two-way mirrors and hundreds of LED lights housed in a geometric frame. DeepLight Co-Founders David Hughes and Neil Merchant—both software developers and frequent music festivalgoers—designed the DeepLight to dazzle audiences at music festivals and other high-profile events with custom elaborate light shows and animations that can be manually controlled and synced with music.

The DeepLight started out as a prototype named “Carl” that was designed specifically for music festivals. The prototype was fabricated with a custom 3-D printed frame, acrylic mirrors and 720 LEDs. Hughes and Merchant knew they would not be able to use 3-D printing technology for the units they would eventually sell to the public, nor could they continue to experiment with 3-D printing in the prototype phase, due to cost considerations. DeepLight Labs turned to Minalex, widely known for expertise in custom prototyping, to devise a solution.

Minalex regards prototyping as a critical step in the manufacturing process, to ensure the end result will be to the client’s exact specifications. Minalex engineering and design teams work collaboratively at the prototype stage, using precise, accurate specifications that enable everyone involved in the manufacturing process to identify issues that may need correction. This effective, efficient process helps save substantial amounts of money and time down the road.

With the prototyping phase successfully completed, DeepLight is now in the final stages of rolling out units that will be sold to the general public. For the physical framework of the new DeepLight units, Minalex created custom, high-grade anodized aluminum extrusions, chosen for their high quality, strength and lightweight properties. The extruded parts both shape the structure of the DeepLight and house the complex array of wiring and electronics that drive the DeepLight’s highly sophisticated visual effects, including dozens of custom lighting modes and animations.

The Minalex process for prototyping truly takes customization to the next level. They can easily produce low-volume runs for limited products. They also offer “no minimum” quantity orders, meaning they are able to create just one single custom item if that is all that is required. To learn more, take a look at how Minalex created a successful prototype solution for Pella.

WEDI Applauds Rescinding of Health Plan Identifier (HPID) by CMS

“WEDI, along with other health care industry stakeholders, has played a significant role in guiding direction for the HPID implementation planning.” – Charles Stellar, President and CEO of WEDI

WEDI, the nation’s leading nonprofit authority on the use of health IT to create efficiencies in health care information exchange, today applauded the rescinding by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) of the Unique Health Plan Identifier (HPID) under the Administrative Simplification provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).

On October 28, 2019, HHS published in the Federal Register the final rule CMS-0054-F. This Final Rule amends 45 CFR 162.103 and repeals 45 CFR 162.502-514 to rescind the adoption of the Health Plan Identifier (HPID) and Other Entity Identifier (OEID). The final rule eliminates the regulatory requirement for health plans to obtain and use an HPID and eliminates the voluntary acquisition and use of the OEID. The final rule also simplifies the process for deactivating the existing identifiers to minimize operational costs for covered entities. On or after the effective date of this final rule – December 27, 2019 – any active HPID or OEID will be automatically deactivated in the Health Plan or Other Entity Enumeration System (HPOES).

“WEDI, along with other health care industry stakeholders, has played a significant role in guiding direction for the HPID implementation planning,” said Charles Stellar, President and CEO of WEDI. “After it became clear in the early years after the rule was issued, that the HPID and its implementation was going to be very complex with little return on investment to the industry, WEDI further engaged the industry, resulting in modifying our comment to support no implementation of HPID was needed so we applaud the decision by HHS.”

  • On July 22, 2015, Jean Narcisi, then-Chair of the WEDI Board of Directors issued a comment letter to Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Acting Administrator Andrew Slavitt to request information regarding the requirements for the Health Plan Identifier, while sharing extensive feedback and guidance from WEDI members and other industry stakeholders.
  • On May 3, 2017, Laurie Darst, then-Chair of the WEDI Board of Directors and Co-Chair of the WEDI Health Plan Identifier Workgroup issued a statement on behalf of WEDI to the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics (NCVHS) Subcommittee on Standards that HPID not be used in transactions and that the HPID enumeration was not needed at all.

About WEDI

WEDI is the leading authority on the use of health IT to improve health care information exchange in order to enhance the quality of care, improve efficiency, and reduce costs of our nation’s health care system. WEDI was formed in 1991 by the Secretary of Health and Human Services and was designated in the 1996 HIPAA legislation as an advisor to HHS. WEDI’s membership includes a broad coalition of organizations, including: hospitals, providers, health plans, vendors, government agencies, consumers, not-for-profit organizations, and standards development organizations. Jericho Project Receives $2.2-MM in VA Grants to Combat Veterans Homelessness

Jericho Project, a nationally-acclaimed nonprofit ending homeless at its roots, has won a two-year $2-million grant from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to launch a new program to reduce homelessness among veterans and their families across the five boroughs of New York City.

The grant is part of the VA’s Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program. It will enable Jericho to fast-track more veterans to housing, providing them with both the financial support – 35% of the cost of their housing for two years – as well as the vital connections to a network of landlords who are proud to offer affordable, clean and safe housing to veterans and their families.

“Many Veterans face an increasingly challenging housing market with rents rising faster than the wages of low-income families. Offering a fixed rental subsidy for two years brings the cost of more units into reach, expanding the affordable housing supply. This subsidy, coupled with a strong partnership with the Department of Labor’s employment programs such as the Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program, may give Veterans the time they need to increase their income so they are no longer severely rent burdened – and escape the continued specter of homelessness,” said John Kuhn, Director of the SSVF program, VA’s homelessness prevention and rapid re-housing initiative.

At the same time, Jericho received a separate grant from the VA for $200,000 for the Grant and Per Diem (GPD) Case Management Program. This program allows the nonprofit to provide a dedicated Case Manager to work closely with veterans as they move from homelessness into independent housing in the community. The Case Manager helps the formerly homeless veterans become more stable in their new apartments and access the employment, health and social support systems they need to sustain their housing. Crucially, this includes regular meetings for six months to ensure that the veteran has the resources to resume civilian life with dignity.

“These generous grants from the VA will not only close the gap between a veteran’s stability and homelessness, but it will also allow them to prevent homelessness and build for the future,” said Jericho Project CEO Tori Lyon.

Jericho brings to this goal its expert team of professionals who work with trusted landlords to locate apartments suitable for the veteran’s location and family size, help negotiate the rental agreement, and provide additional employment or services enabling the veteran to prepare themselves to live independently within two years.

Jericho services 2,500 adults and families, to include some 750 veterans, every year. Of those veterans, Jericho’s SSVF program supports 475 low-income veterans and their families every year, with assistance either to prevent imminent homelessness or to rapidly re-house veterans who have recently become homeless. The SSVF program helps them to obtain housing and employment as quickly as possible. This grant will enable them to serve an additional 90 veterans.

These new programs are part of Jericho’s groundbreaking Veterans Initiative first launched in 2007 that would result in the nonprofit designing and building three state-of-the-art LEED-certified Veterans Residences in the Bronx: Kingsbridge Terrace, Fordham Village and the newest residence, Walton House.

There veterans from all eras pay a third of their income for their own lease and key to an affordable studio apartment with access to their case manager and other support services, such as employment and mental health on site and through Jericho’s network of providers. With studio apartments, community and computer rooms, gyms and gardens, veterans can access the specific counseling they need – whether they are coping with substance abuse or Post Traumatic Stress, seeking education and jobs, or reuniting with their families.

Additionally, the Jericho Veteran Employment Program (JVEP) helps veterans without a secure income to gain employment to prevent their homelessness.

About Jericho Project: Inspired by the belief that transformation can occur in every individual, Jericho Project steadfastly works to end homelessness at its roots by creating a community that inspires individual change, fosters sustainable independence, and motivates men and women to reach their greatest potential. For 36 years, Jericho has provided supportive housing and counseling services to thousands of individuals experiencing chronic homelessness and substance abuse. It has a long track record of proven success: 95% of clients maintain housing stability and 90% of Jericho residents affected by substance abuse maintain their sobriety.

Jericho Project employs rigorous fiscal discipline and works with valued public-private partnerships and a foundation of dedicated donors to advance its mission. Jericho’s housing and extended services cost $13,000 per person annually, compared to $32,000 for a single shelter, $50,000 for a family shelter, and $168,000 for a jail cell annually.
