Unitek Learning is the parent company of several distinguished learning institutions: Unitek EMT, Unitek College, Eagle Gate College, and Provo College.

We will focus on principles of effective communication, moral commitment to self and others, and our capacity to improve the learning experience of the student.

On November 1, 2019, Eagle Gate and Provo College will host their First Annual Unitek Learning Conference at the DoubleTree Hilton Hotel in Salt Lake City, Utah. Additionally, world-renowned nursing theorist Jean Watson, PhD, RN, AHN-BC, FAAN, will serve as keynote speaker for this prestigious event.

During the conference, Dr. Watson will introduce her theory of caring principles or Caritas™. Throughout her career, Dr. Watson has emphasized the importance of caring and healing for the public. Her ultimate goal is one that Unitek Learning shares: to help transform health care “one caregiver, one educator, one leader, one system at a time.” According to Dr. Watson, nurses and other health care personnel provide the best care possible when they care for themselves first.

The conference will feature attendees and panelists who are experts in their field, including but not limited to: Keynote Speaker Jean Watson, PhD, RN, AHN-BC, FAAN – Distinguished Professor and Founder/Director of Watson Caring Science Institute; Kevin K. McEwan, MSN, RN, NEA-BC – Chief Nursing Officer, Madison Memorial Hospital; Maria Black, ANP-BC, DNP, CCRN-K, NEA-BC – Nurse Administrator at Utah Valley Hospital; Emily Shumway MSN-ED, RN – Clinical Education Vice President for the HCA Healthcare; and Liz Close, PhD, RN – Executive Director, Utah Nurses Association/Nurse Expert Consultant.

Beginning the day at 8:00 am, conference participants will attend a meet and greet breakfast. The keynote address will kick off at 8:30 am with Dr. Jean Watson, who will introduce the theme of this year’s conference: Caring Science – Caritas™ Theory Practice. At 10:30 am, a panel of nurse theorists, Utah health care executives, and esteemed educators will discuss the topic of Caring, which will focus on the importance of a Call-to-Improve caring within health care and technology. Sessions in the afternoon—“Embedding Caritas Processes within a Curriculum to Transform the Learning Experience”—will set the stage for critical discussion and deep introspection aimed at elevating caring behaviors. The conference will conclude at 4:00 pm with closing remarks from Unitek’s leadership team.

“Our conference theme for 2019 brings together educators and lifelong learners to catalyze the concept of caring exchange between teachers and students,” said Dr. Abdel Yosef, Chief Academic Officer at Unitek Learning. “We will discuss strategies in adult education to create a caring environment both inside and outside of the classroom. Additionally, we will focus on principles of effective communication, moral commitment to self and others, and our capacity to improve the learning experience of the student.”

Unitek Learning is the parent company of several distinguished learning institutions: Unitek EMT, Unitek College, Eagle Gate College, and Provo College. Taught by experienced professionals, Unitek programs teach the clinical technique and theory used in the field today. Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America Explains Potential Halloween Hazards for Kids With Food Allergies

Halloween is typically a time for kids to let their imaginations run wild and have fun with friends but for kids with severe food allergies, trick-or-treating can be difficult and dangerous. Children may accidentally encounter candy that can trigger an allergic reaction. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) is working to ensure there is greater awareness and proper labeling to prevent allergic reactions.

U.S. law requires most food labels to list eight major allergens: milk, soy, egg, peanut, tree nut, wheat, fish, and crustacean shellfish. But it is important to note that this law does not regulate or require advisory labels such as “may contain” or “processed in a facility with.” A study by the FDA confirmed that chocolates have a high risk of containing milk (a common food allergy in children) even if the label doesn’t declare the presence of milk. Another danger for families to navigate is that there are even a few candies that contain different ingredients or advisory labels in their “mini” size, misleading parents and children alike.

“Halloween should be fun for children and families, but for those with food allergies it can quickly turn into a day full of stress and anxiety,” said Kenneth Mendez, AAFA’s CEO and president. “AAFA hopes that all children are able to experience the best Halloween possible and have helpful resources for a safe and inclusive holiday.”

In advance of Halloween this year, Kids With Food Allergies (KFA) – a division of AAFA – has provided an allergy-aware Halloween candy guide as well as label reading tips to help identify safe “regular” and “mini” sized candy options for children allergic to the top eight food allergens. Additionally, be sure to look out for your neighborhood teal pumpkins. Teal is the color of food allergy awareness and teal pumpkins are a sign that those houses are providing non-food treats on Halloween. Items like stickers, bookmarks and other trinkets provide inclusive options for kids on medically-restricted diets.

Not only is AAFA determined to help parents and children find safe options for celebrating Halloween, but the group is working tirelessly with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to implement additional treatments and labelling. The Foundation has asked the FDA to add sesame seeds to its list of major allergens to require more transparent labeling of this growing allergen. AAFA is also working with other groups and organizations on passing the Food Allergy Safety, Treatment, Education and Research (FASTER) Act, which will require sesame seed labeling. In July, AAFA responded to the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review’s (ICER) Final Evidence Report which assessed the clinical effectiveness and value of treatments for peanut allergies. In September, AAFA presented data about the burden of living with food allergies to the FDA as it reviewed the Palforzia peanut allergy treatment.

About AAFA

Founded in 1953, AAFA is the oldest and largest non-profit patient organization dedicated to saving lives and reducing the burden of disease for people with asthma, allergies and related conditions through research, education, advocacy and support. AAFA provides practical information and community-based services. Through its Kids With Food Allergies division, AAFA offers the most extensive online support community for families raising children with food allergies. “It’s an honor and extremely humbling that the FlexCare family feels so strongly about what we’ve built together,” said Travis Mannon, FlexCare chief executive officer. “Our team members give their all every day, so we want to cultivate a fulfilling environment that rewards them for their success and encourages them to strive for more. The Best Places to Work survey is conducted annually by the Sacramento Business Journal and honors companies that foster a positive work environment. Employees are asked to provide feedback about company benefits, leadership, culture, and work-life balance.

“As a team, we take great pride in partnering with the most dedicated travel nurses, therapists, and allied clinicians in top hospitals around the country,” said Mannon. “They are some of the nation’s most talented clinicians who positively impact the lives of thousands of patients every day. Whole Foods Market and Blue Zones Join Forces to Spark Well-Being Transformation in Austin Metro

“Blue Zones is invested in creating meaningful and lasting change in communities and we’re excited to team up in our hometown of Austin to explore innovative ways to improve wellness,” said John Mackey, CEO and co-founder of Whole Foods Market.

Whole Foods Market, along with Austin leaders, has joined forces with Blue Zones to begin creating a plan for well-being transformation. It will start with an in-depth assessment by the Blue Zones team of the Austin Metro area and population that will help determine how to make it a healthier and happier place to live, work, grow up, and grow old.

Blue Zones is based on research and principles developed by Dan Buettner, National Geographic Fellow and New York Times bestselling author, who identified the cultures of the world—or blue zones—with the healthiest, longest-living populations.

Health and life expectancy have been on a decline in America, and research shows that where people live has a bigger influence on their health than their genetics. Blue Zones tackles this so-called “zip code effect” using scientifically proven lessons of longevity, health, and happiness gleaned from 20 years of research to boost the well-being of entire communities.

“I’m excited to partner personally with Austin and Whole Foods and to lead our global experts to explore opportunities to increase the health and well-being of everyone in the region,” said Dan Buettner, founder of Blue Zones.

“Blue Zones is invested in creating meaningful and lasting change in communities and we’re excited to team up in our hometown of Austin to explore innovative ways to improve wellness,” said John Mackey, CEO and co-founder of Whole Foods Market. “Their holistic approach to improving health and wellbeing complements Whole Foods Market’s mission to nourish people and the planet.”

A pioneer in the natural and organics movement, Whole Foods Market was founded in Austin 40 years ago as an alternative to conventional supermarkets. It currently operates six stores in Austin and the surrounding metro and more than 500 locations across the U.S., Canada and the U.K.

Blue Zones focuses on the single largest determinant of our health: the place we live. By focusing on the Life Radius—the area close to home where people spend 90% of their lives—Blue Zones has been able to move the needle in improving overall population health, raising employee and student productivity, and boosting economic vitality and development.

The first phase of Blue Zones Activate is the assessment, where Blue Zones experts work with local leaders to assess readiness and build a plan for change. The team, made up of global experts in food systems, built environment, tobacco, alcohol, and happiness, will begin immediate work with leaders and organizations to assess the strengths, needs, and challenges that Austin metro residents are facing today. The Blue Zones team of experts will create a transformation plan that, once implemented, can drive widespread improvements in well-being, reductions in health-related costs, and improve economic vitality in the region.

The needs, desires, and readiness of the community helps determine where to go next—into a Phase II or a Phase III path to improving the well-being of the region. Phase II of Blue Zones Activate focuses on policy improvement as the most powerful and cost-effective lever in improving the health of a region. Blue Zones experts work with local leaders to identify and then implement key policy changes which serve as long-lasting interventions for current and future generations. Phase III is a Blue Zones Project—the full Life Radius Model—which is the perfect storm of change with a full focus on people, places, on policy. This community-wide approach optimizes manmade surroundings, systems, and social networks so that healthier choices are easier in all the places people live, work, learn, and play.

Ben Leedle, CEO of Blue Zones, says, “We are excited to work with Whole Foods and community leaders in Austin in this shared purpose of improving the lives of current and future generations in this region. We know improved well-being leads to healthier and happier residents, a better and more productive workforce, and a more vibrant, sustainable economy.“

HomeTown Health LLC First Approved Board Education Provider in State of Georgia

HomeTown Health Approved Board Program

HomeTown Health LLC

“HomeTown Health is proud to be the first in the state to meet the training approval standards by the Georgia Rural Health Innovation Center. We have educated Boards for many years, and this seal of approval is recognition of our well-developed and pertinent education program.”

HomeTown Health is pleased to announce the Hospital Board and Leadership Training Program was certified on October 14, 2019, by the Georgia Rural Health Innovation Center at Mercer University School of Medicine as having satisfied the training requirements found in O.C.G.A . § 31-2-16, becoming the first approved provider of Board Education within the state of Georgia.

Large or small, rural or urban— the role of a hospital in its community is vital. A key to a hospital’s success lies greatly in the governance by its board and trustees, yet the needs of the rural organization often differ greatly. It is a role that demands active participation by members who understand the hospital environment and how to meet the unique challenges rural hospitals face. Trustees face legal, ethical, and regulatory decisions in a highly evolving industry.

In 2018, the Georgia General Assembly implemented a training requirement for rural hospital executives, board members, and hospital authority members. The legislation, HB 769, delegated responsibility for the creation of training standards, approval of vendors, and monitoring of compliance to the Georgia Rural Health Innovation Center.

In accordance with O.C.G.A. § 31-2-16 training approved by the Center must be completed by “the chief executive officer, the chief financial officer, every board member, and every hospital authority member, if operated by a hospital authority pursuant to Article 4 of Chapter 7 of this title, of a rural hospital organization as defined in Code Section 31-89.1.” Such individuals are required to “complete an education program approved by the center pursuant to this paragraph no later than December 31, 2020, or within 12 months of initial hiring or appointment and every two years thereafter.”

HomeTown Health, who has long offered hospital board training through HomeTown Health University, performed an update on the curriculum to become both an approved trainer and to be able to offer an approved curriculum according to the Georgia Rural Health Innovation Center’s standards. In addition to assessment requirements, reporting requirements, and a commitment to quality review of content, the curriculum encompasses eight areas of required training topics. At highest overview, topics include: Governance, Liability and Accountability; Responsibilities to Regulatory Agencies and Legal Considerations; Finances and Fiduciary Responsibility; Compliance; Ethics; Continuum of Care; Strategic Planning & Ability; and Grants. Each of the 8 topics then emphasizes between 3-10 supporting standards for full exploration by participants.

In addition to the Georgia Rural Health Innovation Center approval, HomeTown Health is also authorized to offer continuing education units as an IACET authorized provider. IACET, the official standard for continuing education training, offers CEUs that are recognized by a large variation of boards, organizations, and educational programs. This enables participants to earn accredited continuing education units that meet a variety of professional designation requirements for continuing education.

HomeTown Health’s program offers participants interactive learning encounters through online courses, webinars, moderated groups and live training. The first offering of live training will be held at the 20th Annual HomeTown Health Fall Conference, slated for next week at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia, on October 23. Participants will work closely with the HomeTown Health team to participate through learning encounters which meet their facility’s needs.

Cosmetic Town Shares the “Best Doctors for Cosmetic Ear Surgery in New York in 2019” on CosmeticTown.com

Our best of list for New York cosmetic ear surgery doctors is designed to help patients in the decision making process when it comes to otoplasty. – Cosmetic Town Senior Editor

One of the most prominent features on a person is the ears. There are times when people are born with ears that are overly large or they stick out too far from the skull. This can cause a great deal of embarrassment to teens as well as adults so many people look for a way to alter and reduce the appearance of their ears. In order to help patients get the change they desire when it comes to the look of their ears, Cosmetic Town, a Los Angeles based online plastic surgery and information community, recently compiled and published a list of the “Best Doctors for Cosmetic Ear Surgery in New York in 2019.”

According to the senior editor of Cosmetic Town, “The ears are one of the first features that others notice when they view a person. The size and shape of the ears can be a great source of concern for those who feel that their ears are too large or that they are protruding too far from the head. Otoplasty is a cosmetic surgery that reshapes one or both of the ears. The cosmetic surgeon removes excess skin and cartilage in order to reshape the appearance of the ears as well as reduce their size. The result is a smaller and more natural look to the shape and size of the ears.”

While otoplasty is performed all over the country, the number of cosmetic surgeons performing the procedure can make choosing the right doctor a difficult process. The senior editor stated “our best of list for New York cosmetic ear surgery doctors is designed to help patients in the decision making process when it comes to otoplasty. New York is one of the most popular destinations for otoplasty patients because of the large number of doctors experienced in providing results that are both long lasting and natural in appearance”

The doctors on the 2019 list were picked using the Cosmetic Town intelligent system. The senior editor said the “Cosmetic Town research team uses an intelligent algorithm that is focused on cosmetic surgery. Our staff looks at the skill level of the doctors as well as the amount of patient education they perform on a regular basis. They also look at the number of articles the doctors write on a regular basis to share with their peers and the overall level of satisfaction patients feel towards the doctors. These are the only factors that go into the selection process. The doctors do not provide any type of compensation in order to be included on the list.”

About Cosmetic Town

Cosmetic Town is an online cosmetic medicine publication whose mission is to share knowledge, inspire people and improve lives though cosmetic medicine. The website features doctors who were endorsed and highly recommended by their peers. Its reliable and streamlined database allows users to easily access the cosmetic surgery information they need with just a click of a button.
