Health Care M&A Volume Falls in Q3:2019, According to HealthCareMandA.com

News Image

“The third quarter’s deal volume didn’t end on the up-note we expected when the quarter began…Still, private equity has a lot of money sitting on the sidelines and some large national platforms are on the market. The fourth quarter could surprise us.”

Health care merger and acquisition activity slowed compared with the second quarter. The number of deals announced fell 13%, to 408, compared with the previous quarter and was 15% lower than the 478 deals announced in the same quarter in 2018. Combined spending in the third quarter totaled $51.5 billion, down 63% compared with the previous quarter’s extraordinary $139.1 billion. It was 65% greater than the $31.1 billion reported in the same quarter in 2018, according to HealthCareMandA.com.

Healthcare services transactions represented 67% of the third quarter’s deal volume, similar to the previous four quarters. The Long-Term Care sector once again ranked the busiest, with 101 deals and a 25% share of the quarter’s transaction total. Year-over-year, only two sectors posted gains—Hospitals (+17%) and Managed Care (+29%)—and Rehabilitation remained the same. Combined spending accounted for only 38% of the quarter’s total, approximately $19.6 billion, based on disclosed prices.

Healthcare technology deals accounted for 33% of the third quarter’s deal volume. The eHealth sector was the busiest, posting 53 deals and making up 13% of the quarter’s total. Year-over-year, eHealth was the only one of the technology sectors to post an increase in deal volume, up 43% compared with the second quarter of 2018. Combined spending among the technology sectors was more than $31.9 billion.

“The third quarter’s deal volume didn’t end on the up-note we expected when the quarter began,” said Lisa E. Phillips, editor of HealthCareMandA.com. “The two interest rate cuts from the Federal Reserve didn’t offset the growing talk of a recession and slowing economic growth in the European Union and China. Still, private equity has a lot of money sitting on the sidelines and some large national platforms are on the market. The fourth quarter could surprise us.”

https://www.fdanews.com/developsops

Looking to improve the organization’s productivity, quality and regulatory success? SOPs are key.

Most regulatory citations are related to procedures. And procedures account for more than 40% of human error events in manufacturing. By improving SOPs, one will minimize both human error and regulatory citations.

How does one go about it?

Human Error Solutions’ CEO, Ginette Collazo, Ph.D. — an industrial-organizational psychologist and one of the world’s few human error reduction experts — will explain:

  • How to prepare an outline and develop world-class SOPs
  • The interrelationship between SOPs, quality and regulatory compliance
  • Why human error is a root cause for lack of quality and how to minimize it
  • Common mistakes and causes of human error
  • How to create and maintain a procedure that minimizes human error
  • Good procedure writing practices: terminology, formats, layouts, mixed cases, steps content, familiar words, references, branching, conditional steps and the use of precautions, warnings and cautions
  • Use of electronic information networks for procedural access

While human error may never be eliminated completely, one will come away with clear guidance to help have SOPs that minimize such issues to avoid human error events and regulatory citations.

Study Suggests Adalimumab Exposure in Pregnancy Does Not Increase Birth Defects Risk

https://www.prweb.com/

OTIS provides the MotherToBaby service

The fact that this study showed no increased risk in adverse birth outcomes with the use of adalimumab in pregnancy is important since not a lot of research was previously available on this particular medication.

A new study conducted by birth defects experts from the Organization of Teratology Information Specialists (OTIS) suggests adalimumab use in pregnancy was not associated with an increased risk for adverse outcomes examined, such as major structural birth defects, spontaneous abortion and preterm delivery. The findings were published today in the Public Library of Science (PLOS) One Journal.

The prospective research study conducted by OTIS examined 602 pregnancies that occurred between 2004 – 2016 in women across the U.S. and Canada. Researchers enrolled pregnant women into the observational cohort study who had or had not taken adalimumab for their autoimmune disease, as well as generally healthy pregnant women for comparison. OTIS is the scientific non-profit society that provides the no-cost MotherToBaby information service and enrolls women through the MotherToBaby Pregnancy Studies Research Center at the University of California San Diego. Financial support for the adalimumab study was provided by AbbVie.

“Many women hoping to start a family rely on adalimumab to control symptoms related to crippling autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or Crohn’s Disease,” said lead study author Christina Chambers, PhD, MPH, OTIS/MotherToBaby president and professor of pediatrics at the University of California, San Diego. “The fact that this study showed no increased risk in adverse birth outcomes with the use of adalimumab in pregnancy is important since not a lot of research was previously available on this particular medication.”

The study also found that regardless of whether they took adalimumab or not, pregnant women with rheumatoid arthritis or Crohn’s Disease were at an increased risk of preterm birth (delivery before 37 weeks of pregnancy).

“Studies on medication use in general are lacking when it comes to understanding their effects on pregnancy, making it difficult for pregnant women and their healthcare providers to make informed decisions,” said Dr. Chambers. “We are proud to add valuable information to the literature and encourage more pregnant women to consider volunteering for critical observational studies.”

Guide Dogs for the Blind Reunion to Offer Sensory Experience of Portland

News Image

Today, Guide Dogs for the Blind (GDB), the national nonprofit empowering individuals who are blind or have low vision by creating exceptional partnerships between people, guide dogs and communities, kicks off the organization’s momentous, weekend-long 2019 Guide Dogs for the Blind Alumni Reunion. Over 150 reunion attendees are coming together as a community for the event to celebrate GDB’s mission and to experience what the city of Portland has to offer. These individuals, many of whom are blind or visually impaired and will be traveling with their guide dogs, hail from locations throughout the U.S. and Canada, and have traveled to Portland for the reunion. This is a special event, as a GDB alumni reunion hasn’t occurred in Portland since 2015.

On Friday, October 18, various activities have been planned throughout the day for attendees to experience the city of Portland through the senses of taste, touch and sound. Those activities include indoor rock climbing, a walking food tour of downtown and a tactile art exhibit tour at the Portland Art Museum. This itinerary has been put together with blind and visually impaired visitors in mind to create a tactile experience of Portland.

The reunion agenda on Saturday, October 19 features varying educational breakout sessions focused on support for GDB alumni as well as hosted group discussions for their friends and family members. Some of these sessions include a quality of life workshop hosted by the OHSU Casey Eye Institute, a discussion for sighted attendees on ways to support their blind or visually impaired friend or family member and a beginners guide to identifying North American bird songs.

The packed Saturday will end with a red carpet celebration. Participants will also enjoy a screening of the IFC-produced documentary film Pick of the Litter, which follows a litter of GDB puppies on their journey to become trained guide dogs. The screening will be followed by a talkback with GDB’s CEO and one of the stars of the film, GDB Class Supervisor Melanie Harris. The film will be shown in anticipation of the upcoming Disney-produced documentary TV series of the same name.

“Our alumni reunion events are always very special to us,” says GDB President and CEO Christine Benninger. “We have the opportunity to come together as a community to learn, have fun, experience a new city and, most importantly, celebrate the life-changing mission of Guide Dogs for the Blind. Our staff has outdone themselves this year, and I know our attendees will be impressed with the array of unique activities and sessions taking place providing new and different ways to experience the city of Portland.”

GDB has a Portland area campus in nearby Boring, Oregon. Various GDB events take place at the Boring campus throughout the year, as well as campus tours and graduations that are open to the public. Interested members of the public can find more information on the nonprofit’s Boring campus tours and graduations at guidedogs.com/meet-gdb/campus-tours-graduations.

Whealthcare Planning Announces New Industry Award, Board Member and Capital Raise

Whealthcare Planning, the industry’s only technology platform focused on the intersection of health, aging and finance, announced today growing momentum for the company and its technology, along and a corresponding capital raise to fund its increasing opportunities.

Whealthcare Planning, the industry’s only technology platform focused on the intersection of health, aging and finance, announced today growing momentum for the company and its technology, along and a corresponding capital raise to fund its increasing opportunities.

At the recently held wealthmanagement.com’s Industry Awards Program, Whealthcare Planning was recognized for Technology Thought Leadership for its Whealthcare Academy and Education Center. This prestigious award comes on top of the recognition Whealthcare planning also garnered at the Investment News Innovation Awards.

“We are gratified by the momentum of the Whealthcare Planning tools. Nearly 100 investment advisory firms are now using the tools to simplify interactions with aging investors, support advisors and introduce appropriate services,” said Chris Heye, CEO of Whealthcare Planning, “As the Baby Boomers age, they tend to consolidate assets and the Whealthcare Planning tools facilitate the greater trust needed to earn that consolidation.”

Whealthcare Planning is also excited to announce the appointment of Suzanne Siracuse, the CEO and Founder of Suzanne Siracuse Consulting, her newly launched consulting firm and the former CEO and Publisher of InvestmentNews, as a Board member and Strategic Advisor. Siracuse will leverage her industry knowledge and her strategic business and marketing skill set to help Whealthcare with a variety of growth-related initiatives. “We are delighted to welcome Suzanne to the Whealthcare Planning Board as she will immediately bring a wealth of knowledge and insight,” said Heye.

“The financial planning needs for families with aging members have never been more visible and critical in our society,” said Siracuse. I have been incredibly impressed with what the Whealthcare Planning tools provide advisors and I am looking forward to helping the Whealthcare team share their story.”

As a result of this growing momentum, Whealthcare Planning is announcing a capital raise to accelerate its growth in the enterprise financial advice sector, a large marketplace of financial advisors that includes insurance companies, independent broker-dealers, trust companies and banks.

“We’ve had tremendous interest from the executive suite of these enterprise wealth management firms to help them come up with a technology solution to enable scale across their thousands of financial advisors when it comes to these critical health and wealth issues,” said Heye. “This capital raise will allow us to invest in the integrations and service needed to support our advisor clients as demand grows for using the tools. We are still early in the adoption of support for engaging older investors and their families, so our timing is very good to expand our operations, invest in top technology development talent, while increasing our sales and marketing presence.”

Later this month, Whealthcare Planning will be exhibiting and demonstrating its technology solutions at the upcoming Technology Tools for Today (T3) Enterprise conference in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, October 28-30, 2019.

Thought Technology to Exhibit at AASP Conference – Oct. 23-26, 2019 in Portland, OR

peak performance, physiology

Imagine if you could measure the effect negative thoughts and emotions have on an athlete’s physiology, then be able to alter that effect.

It has long been the practice that training programs for elite and professional athletes include a mental component designed to keep athletes “in the zone” in order to deliver their best performance. But, how do you know when you’re there? Imagine if you could measure the effect negative thoughts and emotions have on an athlete’s physiology, then be able to alter that effect.

Thought Technology’s peak performance physiology training product line involves the use of equipment that monitors a variety of physiological signals and feeds this information back to a computer where the data is displayed in real time. Athletes can see how their body reacts to emotions and stress and can learn how to control these reactions thereby reducing the effect they have on performance. During training, athletes learn to achieve a state of optimal focus and control and, more importantly, learn how to access that state when they need to.

A leader in the field, Thought Technology’s instrumentation has a long history of use by top tier football clubs, as well as by individuals and teams around the world for peak performance training in sports such as tennis, hockey, baseball, skating, skiing and F1 racing. The company was recently invited to attend the Fifth Edition of the exclusive Aspire Academy Global Summit on Football Performance & Science in Doha, Qatar where its representatives had the opportunity to highlight the many benefits of using its physiological monitoring systems for peak performance training.

Visit Thought Technology at AASP booth #2 and have the opportunity to meet Lucas Borgo, Peak Performance Product Manager, who will be demonstrating how its instrumentation delivers anxiety response control, mental acuity and fast recovery – all critical tools in top level athletic performance.

2020 iaedp™ Symposium Offers Self-Expression through Art Competition

“The art submissions are as unique as the art competition itself,” says Blanche Williams, MS and Director of International Development at the iaedp™ Foundation. “The artists’ allow outsiders to see inside their emotional selves.”

Studies involving eating disorders have revealed that emotional repression is linked to higher reports of medical challenges. Through a unique art competition sponsored annually by the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals (iaedp™), artists are given the opportunity of self-expression by pushing the boundaries of form, structure and identity through visual, 3-dimensional and mixed media as well as poetry, spoken word and dance/performance.

The art competition is themed is “Imagine Me Beyond What You See” and held during the annual iaedp™ Symposium. At next year’s conference in Orlando at the Omni at ChampionsGate, March 26-29, the top five art finalists are showcased and the winner is revealed. Entries are currently being accepted through December 15, 2019.

“Imagine Me Beyond What You See” originally was designed to promote a healthy awareness and acceptance of body images. That focus has been nurtured over the 10-year span that the special art competition has been conducted. The art contest is open to everyone; however, iaedp™ asks treatment centers and private practices with art therapists to work with patients to provide entries.

“The art submissions are as unique as the art competition itself,” says Blanche Williams, MS and Director of International Development at the iaedp™ Foundation. “The artists’ allow outsiders to see inside their emotional selves. Each contest entry communicates powerful themes and reveals courageous individuals.”

Entries must include a 300-word description/inspiration along with a two to three sentence biography of the artist or group. A list of materials/content must be provided along with a submission of four photos of the art form in high (300+) resolution jpeg format that shows at least four different angles. Photos will be enlarged, so quality is important. Poetry and/or spoken word should be submitted in writing and/or one to two minute You Tube video link. Dance/performance must be submitted in one to two minute You Tube video link. All entries require signing an artist release.

The Lead Sponsorship for the 2020 “Imagine Me Beyond What You See” is still open for organizations which are interested in helping to support the competition. For more details contact blanche@iaedp.com.

The “Imagine Me Beyond What You See” awards ceremony, scheduled during the 2020 iaedp™ Symposium, will include the Professionals’ Choice Award, which is selected through voting by iaedp™ membership, 2020 Symposium attendees and the general public.

Past year Imagine Me contest entries and winners can be seen by visiting: http://www.iaedp.com/imagine-me/ and http://membershare.iaedp.com/category/members/memberimagineme/. For additional information about the Imagine Me art competition, including how to enter, contact Blanche@iaedp.com.
