HealthCAWS Chairman & CEO Rose Maljanian to Provide Welcome Address Achieving Value by Addressing Social Determinants of Health at Population Health Alliance Summit

Rose Maljanian Chairman & CEO HealthCAWS and Chairman of the Board Population Health Alliance

Addressing consumers most basic needs as part of this holistic approach must be the first step of engagement rather than an afterthought if we are to make meaningful headway in delivering value to individuals and across populations”, says Rose Maljanian, Chairman and CEO HealthCAWS

HealthCAWS Inc., a consumer-provider engagement and population health advancement company, announced today that on October 29 2019, Chairman and CEO Rose Maljanian will provide the welcome address entitled “Achieving Value Targets by Addressing Social Determinants of Health as a Critical Population Health Management Strategy” at the Population Health Alliance Innovation Summit and Capital Caucus: Improving Health through Financial Security, the Common Denominator Across Social Determinants and Populations.

“Population Health Management, including a comprehensive and integrated strategy to address behavioral and Social Determinants of Health, is the single most important strategy to drive improvement in quality, consumer experience and cost. Addressing consumers most basic needs as part of this holistic approach must be the first step of engagement rather than an afterthought if we are to make meaningful headway in delivering value to individuals and across populations,” says Rose Maljanian, Chairman and CEO HealthCAWS and Chairman of the Board for the Population Health Alliance.

The healthcare industry at large is evolving to a more consumer focused, accountable system made up of evolved legacy organizations and new entrants all striving to achieve better quality more simply, conveniently and affordably. Community based organizations have for decades worked with health system partners to identify hard to reach individuals and provide a social and cultural context for accessing health care services. Today, substantial momentum has built to invest in greater availability of affordable housing units, more access to meal delivery especially after a hospitalization, transportation and support for combating issues such as financial insecurity and social isolation. While it seems obvious, more recent studies have documenting the link between addressing basic needs, now coined social determinants of health (SDoH), and health status and healthcare costs. This has given rise to new companies focused exclusively on SDoH, hundreds of millions in investments by large managed care companies and foundations, and traditional social service organizations partnering with healthcare organizations to build sustainable business models to systematically identify those with needs and develop capacity to provide services to the resultant larger cohort of individuals identified.

“I am pleased to lead off this important event for the Population Health Alliance (PHA) and the industry at large as PHA members and partners share insights to fuel further progress on behalf of consumers amongst organizations that serve commercial employers, Medicare, Medicaid and communities at large,” added Maljanian.

Understanding the Difference Between Neck Pain and Neck Spasms

https://www.prweb.com/

Dr. Kaliq Chang

Spasms occur when the muscles in your neck contract suddenly and involuntarily, triggering severe, sharp pain; trouble moving the neck and shoulders; a headache; or even dizziness or tingling in the base of the neck.

Talk about a real pain in the neck: Neck spasms take a common form of discomfort to the next level. But fortunately, a variety of home-based treatments can help, according to Kaliq Chang, MD, of Atlantic Spine Center.

What’s the difference between run-of-the-mill neck pain and neck spasms? Spasms occur when the muscles in your neck contract suddenly and involuntarily, triggering severe, sharp pain; trouble moving the neck and shoulders; a headache; or even dizziness or tingling in the base of the neck, Dr. Chang explains.

“When neck spasms strike, the effects can be extreme,” says Dr. Chang, an interventional pain management specialist who’s double board-certified in interventional pain management and anesthesiology. “The muscles in your neck feel tight, hard and painful, and tender spots in your neck – often called trigger points – can prompt pain in areas around your neck. It’s difficult to do anything else when your neck is in spasms.”

Causes of neck spasms

What brings on neck spasms? Culprits range from the minor to the serious, Dr. Chang says, and include:

  • Sitting for extended periods in front of a computer
  • Turning suddenly while sleeping
  • Repetitive neck movements
  • Wearing a heavy bag on one shoulder
  • Carrying a heavy item, especially with just one arm
  • Cradling a phone against the neck
  • Emotional stress
  • Poor posture
  • Whiplash or other physical trauma
  • Back conditions such as spinal stenosis or herniated disc
  • Medical conditions such as meningitis, an infection of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord

If you’re not sure what triggered your neck spasm and are experiencing other alarming symptoms, such as weakness, numbness or fever, see a doctor.

Unfortunately, it’s usually tricky to predict how long pain from neck spasms can last, Dr. Chang says. “It can linger from a few days to a few weeks,” he notes. “If you can trace your symptoms to a particular activity, it’s important to stop doing that activity until your muscles have healed and the pain has eased. Otherwise, it will take longer to recover.”

Treatment and prevention tactics

In the meantime, a variety of exercises and home-based remedies can help speed up the recovery process after experiencing necks spasms. Treatment tactics include:

  • Stretches: This may be the quickest, most effective remedy, Dr. Chang says. “Gently stretch the muscles in spasm, repeating these stretches as needed as the muscles calm down,” he adds.
  • Massage: Placing pressure on the neck muscles – either with your own or someone else’s hands – can help knead tightness away.
  • Ice or heat: Ice packs, gel packs or frozen vegetables are the cold form of this treatment, while moist heating pads or wet washcloths are the heated form. Apply whichever temperature therapy feels best. Repeat every few hours for 20 minutes or so at a time.
  • Medications: Over-the-counter NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as ibuprofen or naproxen can ease pain and calm inflamed muscles, Dr. Chang says, or your doctor can prescribe a higher-strength version.
  • Physical therapy: Your doctor may prescribe a course of physical therapy to provide certain exercises and other treatments for neck spasms.
  • Steroid injections: If non-invasive treatments don’t help, your doctor may inject a steroid or pain reliever into the affected neck area.

As always, of course, prevention is far preferable to experiencing neck spasms in the first place – or suffering a recurrence, Dr. Chang says.

“You can avoid the most common triggers of neck spasms by practicing good posture while you walk and sit at a computer, taking frequent breaks, and stretching your neck muscles several times a day,” he advises.

Houston’s Biggest Fall Foodie Event Raises Over $275,000 in Proceeds for the American Cancer Society and Hope Lodge Houston

https://www.prweb.com/

Mary Grace Gray-Event Chair, Shelby Hodge and Shafik Rifaat- Event Honorees, and Tiziana Triolo-American Cancer Society Development Manager

Over 400 guests gathered at The Ballroom at Bayou Place on Thursday, October 3rd, for Corks and Forks 2019. The event benefited the American Cancer Society and Hope Lodge Houston, southeast Texas’ first and only no-cost, high quality residential facility exclusively for cancer patients who travel to Houston for treatment but have limited resources for lodging. Hope Lodge Houston will be one of the country’s biggest Hope Lodge facilities and will open in early 2020.

During the four-hour evening, guests enjoyed the live musical stylings of David Caceres, as KHOU’s Deborah Duncan emceed the event. Attendees placed bids on silent auction items, while auctioneer Alan Helfman led the live auction. Up for grabs were a range of donations from sponsors, including Astros tickets, exclusive restaurant tastings, vacations, jewelry, and even a 5-day trip to Italy.

Corks and Forks, otherwise known as Houston’s premiere fall foodie event, also boasted a culinary competition between fourteen of the city’s top restaurants. The award-winning chefs competed for both a culinary crown, selected by celebrity judges, and a Vignette Award, selected by attendees. In attendance were Joe Cervatez of Brennan’s of Houston, Stephen Conklin of La Table, Uchi’s Chris Davies, Liberty Kitchen’s Lance Fegen, Giancarlo Ferrara of Amalfi Ristorante Italiano and Bar, Ristorante Cavour’s Maurizio Ferrarese, Verdine’s Stephanie Hoban, Toulouse Café and Bar’s Emmanual Hodencq, Thomas Laczynski of Ouzo Bay, Le Colonial’s Hassan Obaye, Alex Padilla of The Original Ninfa’s on Navigation, Frank’s Americana Revival Chef Colin Shine, Jeffrey Taylor of Steak 48, and Bisou’s Laura Taylor.

Celebrity judges Mai Pham, Greg Morago, Whitney Mercilus, Kate McClean and Tony Vallone awarded Giancarlo Ferrara of Amalfi the top honors. Ferrara delighted both judges and guests with his Capesante in Padella con Crema Di Zucchine e Tartufo: sea diver scallops pan-seared in olive oil and sea salt, served with baby zucchini mousse, pioppini mushrooms, and black truffle cream sauce. His Sfogliatella Napoletana dessert was also a guest-favorite, and featured shells filled with ricotta cheese pastry cream, semolino, and candied orange, served alongside vanilla bean sauce.

Brennan’s of Houston Executive Chef Joe Cervantez took home the Vignette Award, after impressing guests with his Tasso and Grits Dumplings, served with NOLA-style barbeque shrimp.

Beyond the culinary competition and auctions, Corks and Forks spent part of the evening honoring special guests PaperCity Journalist Shelby Hodge, and Architect/UH Professor Shafik Rifaat. The event also honored VICTORY Houston, a volunteer branch of the American Cancer Society, whose award was accepted by long-time member Bebe Falik. Corks and Forks’ final honoree was 3 year-old Giovanni Albelice, who was diagnosed with Leukemia at just 18 months old. Albelice is still undergoing treatment. His parents spoke to attendees about the importance of giving.

Corks and Forks and its contribution to ending cancer as a major health concern was possible due to the event’s generous volunteers, donors, sponsors, and participants, as well as Event and Committee Chairs Mary Grace Gray, Tiziana Triolo, Sherri Zucker, Tracey Cleckler, Jeri Sonnier, Gabriella Dror, Rachel Boyd and Katherine Orellana Ross.

Vigorous Innovations Launches Pro Version of its Percussion Massager for Athletes

News Image

Representatives with Vigorous Innovations announced today that it has launched the pro version of its Percussion Massager for Athletes.

“We’re very excited about the launched of the pro version of our Percussion Massager,” said Justin Robinson, owner and spokesperson for Vigorous Innovations. “It equips users with extended battery life; it’s extremely quiet but still powerful.”

Robinson revealed that the Pro version empowers users with the rejuvenating effects of the VI PRO Percussion Massage Gun without the noise and nuisance of most electric massage percussion devices.

“The VI PRO is trusted by athletes of all ages, personal trainers, physical therapists, chiropractors, and medical staff,” Robinson said, before adding that it also comes with four easy-to-change heads that allow users to quickly and easily swap out a different percussive head for different muscles groups or to spot-treat tired joints or scar tissue.

“The forkhead is great for your back, the bullet head is amazing for pressure points, and the flathead and ball head are great for large areas,” Robinson stressed.

Robinson went on to point out that the ultra-quiet design of the Pro version is unique because most percussive massage guns are extremely loud and can damage users’ hearing.

“The VI PRO features a brushless five-speed motor that delivers 1400-3200 strokes per minute that is so quiet you can use it anywhere (including the office) without bothering other people or pets,” Robinson said. “Each VI PRO comes in a hard shell carry case for total portability. Take it with you to events, competitions, work, or different rooms in your home. A quick charge cable is included along with easy to read instructions, bonus online instruction videos, and a digital eBook.”

To top it off, the newly-released product also comes with a 100 percent money-back guarantee and full year warranty.

As to how customers rate the product, one Amazon reviewer identified as Makai gave it all five stars and described it as an awesome massager.

“I’m a triathlete, and I’ve been thinking about purchasing one of these percussion massagers for a while,” Makai said, before revealing, “I was hesitant to spend that type of money for one and was planning to purchase a cheaper one. I’m so glad I spent the money. This item is powerful, quiet easy-to-use. It arrived on time, and when I open the box it was in its hard case. This massager really gets into hard to reach places and also takes out those knots. I recommend this item if you’re looking to purchase one.”

But he isn’t the only one. A second Amazon reviewer identified as Jeremy Taylor also gave it all five stars.

“I am a sports chiropractor, and this device is a must-have for any sports therapist/clinician as well as for personal use,” Taylor said. “I use it to decrease tone in tight muscles but also to activate muscles that aren’t firing due to injury, inflammation, overuse, or inactivity. I’ve used other therapy guns, but they are so loud and distracting in a clinic. This device is very quiet, and I can use it on patients all day without needing to recharge it. And the price is amazing.”

American College of Lifestyle Medicine to Honor International Public Health Leader and North Karelia Project Director Pekka Puska with Inaugural Dr. Ancel Keys Award

https://www.prweb.com/

Professor Pekka Puska

“Like Ancel Keys, Professor Puska has impacted and saved the lives of so many as a leader and contributor to public health and policy.”

The American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) today announced that Pekka Puska, MD, PhD, MPolSc, a Finnish professor, physician and former member of the Finnish Parliament, will be awarded the medical professional society’s first-ever Dr. Ancel Keys Award. The award will be were presented during ACLM’s sold-out 2019 Lifestyle Medicine Conference at its annual Awards Banquet on Tuesday, Oct. 29 in Orlando, FL.

Puska has had a significant influence on public health research and practice in Finland and globally for several decades. He was, for 25 years, the Director and Principal Investigator of the North Karelia Project for prevention of cardiovascular diseases in North Karelia and later on in all Finland. Within 35 years, an over 85 percent decline in annual heart disease mortality among the working age population and a dramatic general improvement in public health took place. Turning an area in Finland with the highest heart disease death rate into a country with one of the lowest, the project is widely seen as a model for successful population-based prevention of cardiovascular and other noncommunicable diseases (NCD).

The Dr. Ancel Keys Award was established to recognize a person who has made significant contributions to thought, evidence, practice and policy through research and the application of scientific principles, with particular emphasis on public health issues and population science. The recipient must be highly respected through research and publications as a leader in epidemiology, biostatistics and nutrition, with concern for public as well as individual health. The recipient must have shown courage in taking an evidence-based public policy stance. It will be awarded by ACLM every three years.

The Keys Award is named in honor of Ancel Keys, who started his career in physiology and moved into public health with experiments to meet wartime needs for survival rations (the “K-ration”) and to re-nourish the starving survivors of war in Europe. After the war, Keys became interested in tracing the causes and prevention of cardiovascular diseases, initiating studies that included the landmark epidemiologic “Seven Countries Study” showing the correlation of dietary saturated fat to heart disease. He named and evaluated body mass index (BMI) and with his wife also introduced the Mediterranean Diet.

Puska formerly held the position of Director General of Finland’s National Institute for Health and Welfare from 2009 to 2013, and currently is a professor at University of Helsinki and University of Eastern Finland. He has twice served as a member of the Finnish Parliament, working on both its Health and Social Affairs and Education committees.

From 2001 to 2003 Puska served as the Director for Noncommunicable Disease Prevention and Health Promotion at the World Health Organization Headquarters in Geneva. At WHO, Puska directed the work on integrated prevention of NCD targeting the main risk factors (tobacco, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity) through health promotion, national programs, policy measures and regional networks. His department’s work culminated in adoption of the Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health by the World Health Assembly in 2004.

Internationally, Puska is Past President of the International Association of National Public Health Institutes (IANPHI), and he has also served as the chair of the Governing Council of the WHO International Agency for Cancer Research (IARC) and as the President of the World Heart Federation. Domestically, Puska has served among other things as the Chancellor of the University of Turku, Chair of the Finnish University Council, Member of Board of Academy of Finland, Chair of the National Nutrition Committee and President of National Union of Finnish Students.

Among his several honors are Honorary Doctorate at St. Andrew’s University (Scotland) and Lisbon University, as well as Academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. He has received, among other recognition, WHO’s annual Health Education Award in 1990, WHO Tobacco Free World Award in 1999, the Nordic Award for Public Health in 2005, and the Rank Prize in 2008.

Puska continues his affiliation with THL, the country’s comprehensive national institute for public health and welfare under Finland’s Ministry of Health.

“Pekka Puska is deserving of this award for the creative and courageous efforts he has made throughout his career, not just for the health of the people of Finland, but people around the world,” said ACLM President Dexter Shurney, MD, MBA, MPH, FACLM, DipABLM. “He is a giant in cardiovascular research and policy. Like Ancel Keys, Professor Puska has impacted and saved the lives of so many as a leader and contributor to public health and policy. We are honored to have Pekka Puska be our first Dr. Ancel Keys Award recipient.”

The Smart EMS Solution

“We are excited to partner with the Public Safety Network to leverage P3’s communications engineering expertise to bring an innovative and comprehensive approach to connectivity for the EMS community,” – Marc Althoff.

Created by former FirstNet senior executives and P3 Group North America engineers, Allerio is a smart mobile connectivity company that is taking emergency medical services (EMS) and telemedicine to the next level with next generation connectivity solutions built with meeting the needs of responders in mind. The start-up is dedicated to bringing the best technology for first responders to meet the current and future needs of the global public safety community.

Allerio is a joint venture between the Public Safety Network, LLC (PSN) and P3 North America Inc. (P3 NA) and was founded in 2019. Allerio is headquartered in Duluth, Minnesota with satellite offices spanning the U.S., including production facilities in Madison Heights, Michigan. The co-founders of PSN, TJ Kennedy, former President of the FirstNet Authority, and Jason Karp, former Chief Counsel of the FirstNet Authority, founded PSN to help bring to market the best technology and communications solutions to meet the mission critical needs of public safety. “We are excited to partner with the Public Safety Network to leverage P3’s communications engineering expertise to bring an innovative and comprehensive approach to connectivity for the EMS community,” noted Marc Althoff.

Allerio executives came to understand even more the need for new and innovative communications solutions for EMS to assist with their lifesaving mission while at the FirstNet Authority, where the founders and other members of the FirstNet Authority consultation team engaged with first responders nationwide.

“As telemedicine has become more prevalent with the roll out of Emergency Triage, Treat and Transport (ET3) for out of hospital care being performed by EMS, the need for reliable, uninterrupted and secure, connectivity has become increasingly paramount. Allerio’s platform allows for that enhanced connectivity capability. Allerio’s ability to provide reliable patient data transmission gives EMS professionals the ability to quickly and accurately record and share crucial patient information, with a continued focus on the patient, instead of spending extra time doing manual data entry and recordkeeping,” said co-founder TJ Kennedy.

Allerio’s smart connectivity solutions for EMS agencies, healthcare professionals, and hospitals provide a reliable communication platform to facilitate the exchange of critical patient information and data from the field to the hospital. The Allerio “Mobile Hub” enables a seamless and automatic network transition to access the best available connectivity, whether in or out of a vehicle, patient home or other structure, ensuring patient data is delivered in real-time.
