HeroZona National Veteran Summit Launches Bridge Forum to Help and Hire Veterans with PTSD

The HeroZona Foundation has announced a Bridge Forum on Nov. 5 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sheraton Crescent Hotel (260 W. Dunlap Ave.) in Phoenix, which will discuss mental health and first responder veterans. A study by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration found that only 50% of returning vets who need veteran mental health treatment will receive these services, which is why the Bridge Forum will aim to start a discussion surrounding how to help and hire those with PTSD.

The Bridge Forum will take place on day one of the three-day HeroZona National Veteran Summit, a multi-day experience for America’s veterans including Arizona’s 640,000 veterans, 38,000 active duty service members and 1,000 veteran owned companies. The third annual summit will return to Phoenix Nov. 5 through 7.

The Bridge Forum theme will include mental health professionals, veterans, first responders and law enforcement discussing how to break the stigma surrounding mental illness. The forum will focus on current efforts within the Arizona Department of Veterans’ Services, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Arizona Coalition for Military Families, Arizona Association of Chiefs of Police, Arizona Fire District Association, and community resources to ensure first responders who have served in the military have resources to mental healthcare throughout their career after military service.

“Bridge Forums are an essential tool in bridging the gap between veterans, mental health professionals, first responders and law enforcement,” said HeroZona Foundation Founder and U.S. Army Desert Storm Veteran, Alan “AP” Powell. “Our goal is to empower veterans who have PTSD and let them know that there are resources available to help them succeed in life after service.”

Presenters from Veterans Affairs will highlight current clinical and research activities and demonstrate strategies first responders can utilize to enhance their work, gain support from family members and optimize their health. Community organizations will also provide resources available in Phoenix for first responders and their families. The final presentation will be from first responders and fire and police department clinicians who will discuss support and services within their departments.

Bridge Forum presenters and panelist will include Veterans Affairs, Be Connected, Arizona Department of Veterans’ Services, Arizona Health Cost Containment System, Department of Economic Security, Veteran’s Court, AZ Coalition for Military Families, Mercy Care, Arizona Statewide Public Safety Peer Support Association, 100 Club, COPS, Emergency Responders Assistance Program and Institute of Healing Memories. Sponsors will include Arizona State University and the Department of Veterans’ Services.

The three-day HeroZona National Veteran Summit is free and open to active duty service members, National Guard and Army Reserve, veterans, military spouses and caregivers. To learn more about the

Care Overseas Deliver High Level Dental Tourism Services

Many U.S. and Canadian citizens cannot afford high-cost but required dental care due to lack of insurance benefits. Those patients are turning to dental tourism in more and more numbers. Dental tourism helps patients find dental clinics and dentists in other parts of the world. Overseas clinics provide dental surgeons and periodontists that can perform procedures such as dental implants at much lower rates than clinics in the United States.

https://www.CareOverseas.com is quickly becoming a leader in the Costa Rican dental tourism industry. One of the reasons is because while most dental tourism companies offer the hopes for quality dental care at a lower rate than what they’d find in the U.S., Care Overseas provides the entire breadth of services that dental patients look for and need.

Not only will Care Overseas help dental patients find a dental clinic and dentist in Costa Rica, they also allow patients that visit their site to get a quote from one of their clinic partners. “People in need of dental procedures know right away what to expect cost-wise via our site,” Erich Johanning, lead Care Consultant with Care Overseas said.

Johanning pointed out that once dental patients are aware of the cost-savings, they can breathe a sigh of relief. “Cost is the number one factor for any invasive dental procedure like dental implants or porcelain veneers. Once patients understand what to expect when it comes to cost, they can relax some and we can help them move to other solutions.” You can find all the information about dental implants in Costa Rica here: https://www.CareOverseas.com/procedures/dental-implants/.

Those other solutions include such things like airfare, hotel stay, and tourist activities. That’s where Care Overseas provides more value to dental patients than many of their competitors. “When creating the company, we decided to look at it from an overhead viewpoint. Yes, dental patients can’t afford certain procedures in the United States. Yes, we’ve got excellent dentists and clinics in Costa Rica. But, how do they get here? Where do they stay? What can they do when they’re here? Costa Rica is a fantastic country. We’re one of the top tourist destinations in the world. It only makes sense that dental patients partake in tourist activities while here getting dental procedures.”

By offering such a full slate of services, Johanning hopes Care Overseas cannot only provide peace of mind when it comes to cost, but also lower dental patients’ anxiety. “Dental procedures can be scary. If we can help lower patients’ anxieties, we’re doing our job.”

Hand and Upper Limb Orthopedic Surgeon Alejandro Badia Offers Tips to Avoid Cubital Tunnel Syndrome

https://www.prweb.com/

Dr. Alejandro Badia

As a nerve-compression disorder of the upper limbs, cubital tunnel syndrome is second only to carpal tunnel syndrome in frequency of occurrence.

Sometimes, the elbow’s “funny bone” is just not that funny, especially when the nerve passing in it – the ulnar nerve — becomes irritated and inflamed due to chronic pressure and impingement – a condition called cubital tunnel syndrome, says noted hand and upper limb orthopedic surgeon Alejandro Badia, MD. He emphasizes that early diagnosis is essential.

In fact, experts contend recovery rates are nearly 90 percent when the condition is treated within a year of onset but drop to under 70 percent if a patient does not get help beyond a year. As a nerve-compression disorder of the upper limbs, cubital tunnel syndrome is second only to carpal tunnel syndrome in frequency of occurrence.

“The ulnar nerve lies directly behind the medial epicondyle – the elbow’s bony protrusion or “funny bone” — and is vulnerable to pressure and constriction. When the pressure on the nerve becomes great enough to disturb the way the nerve works, then numbness, tingling, and pain may develop along the inner portion of the elbow and in the forearm, hand, and fingers, specifically the ‘pinky’ and ring fingers,” explains Dr. Badia. He is founder and chief medical officer of the Florida-based Badia Hand to Shoulder Center and OrthoNOW®.

In severe cases, the condition can lead to weakness in the fingers, decreased hand grip and wasting of hand muscles.

“Unless properly diagnosed and treated, nerve compression disorders worsen over time and can cause nerve damage that becomes permanent or, in the best of circumstances, requires months of healing. When ignored, the hand loses fine dexterity and task such as typing, playing the piano or say, performing surgery, become near impossible,” Dr. Badia says.

The cubital tunnel is anatomically similar although less defined than the carpal tunnel in the wrist. It is a narrow passageway, composed of ligament, muscle and bone, behind the inside edge of the elbow. The ulnar nerve runs through the cubital tunnel on its way down the forearm and into the hand where the nerve controls the thumb and small hand muscles.

Symptoms of nerve compression within the cubital tunnel most frequently occur when the elbow is rested on hard surfaces for extended periods; is exposed to repetitive bending and straightening, particularly during work-related activities like painting; or kept in a bent position, as happens while driving, sleeping or holding a phone.

Other risks for developing the condition are injury to the elbow; presence of joint-inflammatory disorders like arthritis; obesity; and engagement in sports, particularly those involving throwing and overhead movements, says Dr. Badia.

The anatomy of the upper limb also may predispose some people to developing cubital tunnel syndrome. In those cases, the nerve may glide over the elbow’s bony bump as the elbow is bent and straightened. Eventually, the ongoing motion causes the nerve and connective tissue around it to become tender.

Conservative therapy is normally the first-line treatment for the syndrome, including application of cold compresses, over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications, corticosteroid injections, prescribed exercises, changes in pattern of elbow use by avoiding activities that pressure the joint, wearing of a protective elbow pad — even splinting of the elbow at night to prevent over-bending it during sleep. However, should these approaches fail, surgical intervention may be required, Dr. Badia notes.

Dr. Badia is a recognized expert in endoscopic tunnel release – an innovative surgical procedure. The technique involves insertion of an endoscope through a tiny incision in the elbow, enabling a surgeon to visualize the operating field and relieve tension on the ulnar nerve minimally invasively.

“Endoscopic tunnel release is quicker and less painful than standard surgical approaches and typically requires minimal recovery time, and I am able to get folks back to most jobs within a week. In fact, I have had several throwing athletes return to the mound within 3 weeks due to the minimally invasive endoscopic approach,” Dr. Badia states. “Patients have experienced immediate relief of symptoms following the procedure. I have had several patients that noted relief in the recovery room when local anesthesia wore off!”

But, even newer treatments for cubital tunnel syndrome may be on the horizon. Two case reports published in the May 2019 issue of the journal Medicine indicate that pulsed radio frequency (PRF) stimulation applied to the ulna nerve at the medial epicondyle relieved the neuropathic pain of patients who had failed earlier therapy involving oral medication and steroid injections, however this will never replace the mechanical effect of actual nerve decompression in cases where the nerve has clear signs of compression

The best medicine, of course, is prevention, which is why Dr, Badia offers these tips to lower risk for cubital tunnel syndrome:

  • Avoid resting the elbows hard surfaces for long periods of time.
  • Warm up properly before engaging in strenuous exercise, physical work or sports.
  • Take frequent breaks when performing activities requiring constant arm and elbow motion and avoid prolonged periods where the elbow is fully bent (flexed).
  • Lose weight.
  • Most importantly, if that “funny bone” is no laughing matter, contact an orthopedic specialist as soon as possible, Dr. Badia concludes.

Bio: Alejandro Badia, MD, FACS, internationally renowned hand and upper-limb surgeon and founder of Badia Hand to Shoulder Center and OrthoNOW®, a walk-in orthopedic care clinic. He is a member the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, American Association for Hand Surgery, and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Every Pilot In Control Solution Standard™ to Overcome Loss of Control In-flight

News Image

“The first of its kind, EPIC-S2 is a comprehensive training standard which incorporates and gives specificity to the Six Critical UPRT Implementation Factors essential to solving LOC-I.”

Aviation Performance Solutions LLC (APS), a global leader in Upset Prevention & Recovery Training (UPRT), announced today at the 2019 National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition (BACE) in Las Vegas, a powerful new training standard to advance the industry’s approach to overcoming Loss of Control In-flight (LOC-I), aviation’s number one fatal threat to air safety. The new standard will be known as the Every Pilot in Control Solution Standard™, or EPIC-S2™.

The first of its kind, EPIC-S2 is a comprehensive training standard which incorporates and gives specificity to the Six Critical UPRT Implementation Factors essential to solving LOC-I (see EPIC-S2 model, figure 1).

Deficiencies in Airplane State Awareness (ASA), Single-pilot Resource Management (SRM), Crew Resource Management (CRM), Threat and Error Management (TEM), and aircraft performance, as well as inappropriate pilot response in developing upset events perpetuate LOC-I as the most lethal threat to the traveling public by air. The Every Pilot In Control Solution Standard (EPIC-S2) integrates proven training, experience, human factor, and awareness components that mitigate these deficiencies. Incorporating these components bolsters pilot resilience, proficiency, and cognitive discipline in a wide spectrum of manual flight operations and airplane upset conditions, providing a framework to maximize the ability of UPRT to do what it is intended to do: save lives.

The APS Vision to Help Pilots Bring Everyone Home Safely drives APS to aid the industry in improving aviation safety at all levels worldwide. Beyond high-level UPRT guidance and practically-vague regulatory frameworks that miss crucial and fundamental mitigating features of effective UPRT, the Every Pilot In Control Solution Standard (EPIC-S2) bridges the UPRT gap between ‘just getting it done’ and ‘getting it done right.’ Robust Upset Prevention and Recovery Training (UPRT) adhering to the Six Critical UPRT Implementation Factors instills in pilots the skills they need to overcome LOC-I and significantly improves manual handling skills and airmanship.

“APS works closely with oversight civil aviation organizations and National Aviation Authorities to aid in their development of guidelines and recommendations for UPRT implementation globally. Consensus among industry stakeholders continues to reinforce the critical role of UPRT in aviation system and operational safety,” said Paul BJ Ransbury, CEO of APS. “APS’ public release of the EPIC-S2 provides a clear framework of Six Critical UPRT Implementation Factors that are designed to help training organizations worldwide ensure their UPRT is conducted in a highly-effective, comprehensive, and long-lasting manner, all in accordance with industry-defined regulations and best practices.”

Veran launches new navigated triple needle brush and new navigated catheter to help physicians diagnose and guide treatment of early stage lung cancer

https://www.prweb.com/

SPiN Thoracic Navigation System™

“Our new tip-tracked instruments provide additional flexibility to help physicians reach and guide treatment for early stage cancer when patients have the best prognosis.”

Veran Medical continues its mission to help physicians diagnose and treat early stage lung cancer with the launch of two, new navigated instruments. These devices are designed to help diagnose and guide treatment of small suspicious nodules, likely to be early stage lung cancer. These new tip-tracked tools will be launched at the annual American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST) annual meeting in New Orleans, LA this week.

Veran Medical is launching their Always-On Tip Tracked® Triple Needle Brush, which is designed to sample lesions both inside and outside of an airway. This electromagnetic tip-tracked tool will help physicians take more samples to assist in the early diagnosis of lung cancer. Since this new instrument will be tip-tracked, physicians will not need to use fluoroscopy during sampling.

Veran Medical is also debuting and launching a 180-degree SPiN Access Catheter™ that is used to gain access for biopsy and/or therapy delivery. This tip-tracked catheter will allow a bronchoscopist to utilize a catheter-based approach with the added benefits of advanced mapping, respiratory gating, tip-tracked instrument sampling, and the ability to reach targets outside an airway with a seamless conversion to a percutaneous approach.

“The expanding adoption of lung cancer screening has given us a real opportunity to catch cancer earlier and save lives, but only if we can help physicians reach the smallest nodules,” said Veran Medical CEO Jason Pesterfield. “Our new tip-tracked instruments provide additional flexibility to help physicians reach and guide treatment for early stage cancer when patients have the best prognosis.”

Veran’s next generation SPiN Thoracic Navigation System™ offers an industry leading precision thoracic guidance platform that allows lung specialists to seamlessly transition between a navigated endobronchial approach and a navigated transthoracic approach utilizing SPiN Perc™, to help physicians diagnose lung cancer earlier. A published clinical study utilizing a multi-modality approach, including Veran’s SPiN System™ and SPiN Perc™, have demonstrated a 92% diagnostic yield.

Lung Cancer remains the number one cancer killer worldwide. 94 million current or former smokers remain at elevated risk in the U.S. alone. More than 8 million people in the U.S. currently meet the criteria for lung cancer screening. When suspicious lesions are discovered, patients need answers. But mounting clinical data suggests that a large percentage of the hundreds of thousands of bronchoscopies performed every year on suspected lung cancer patients are non-diagnostic—delaying potential lifesaving therapy.

About Veran Medical Technologies

Veran is a privately held medical device company headquartered in St. Louis, MO. The company’s mission is to empower physicians to diagnose cancer earlier and to enable precision therapy to save lives. In the United States, lung cancer kills more people each year than breast, prostate, pancreatic and colon cancers combined.

Veran has developed and commercialized an FDA cleared, next generation electromagnetic thoracic navigation platform called the SPiN Thoracic Navigation System™. Veran’s breakthrough technology has been adopted by leading cancer centers throughout the United States. Veran provides physicians with a full line of bronchoscopic brushes, needles, forceps and steerable catheters with tiny electromagnetic sensors embedded in the tips for precise navigation. The combination of these proprietary Always-On Tip Tracked® instruments and Veran’s exclusive patient respiratory gating technology enables physicians to accurately access lung nodules by accounting for nodule movement during patient breathing, a common challenge for lung specialists.

Another challenge lung specialists face is that approximately 40% of lung nodules lie outside of an airway, making them very difficult to reach endobronchially, and traditionally requiring an additional procedure. Veran’s SPiN Thoracic Navigation System™ is the first and only FDA cleared technology that enables Pulmonologists or Thoracic Surgeons the ability to safely and accurately access lung nodules outside of an airway using SPiN Perc™, a navigated transthoracic needle. With SPiN Perc™, Veran combines endobronchial navigation with percutaneous navigation, allowing physicians to access all lung nodules in a single procedure, regardless of nodule size or location. This eliminates the cost and risk of unnecessary procedures and empowers physicians to provide a same day diagnosis for their patients. The early diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer has been proven to save lives.

Legacy Oaks of Sacramento Hosts Free Memory Care Workshops

Staff member and resident looking at photos and tools.

Legacy Oaks of Sacramento team member and resident engaging. Life engagement is one of the 5 directional paths of the Montessori Moments in Time program.

We understand the challenges you face and know that it is essential for you to have support, education, and an understanding of how important it is to take care of yourself.

Currently under the management of Meridian Senior Living (Meridian), Legacy Oaks of Sacramento Assisted Living and Memory Care (Legacy Oaks) is hosting Caregiver Café, a monthly workshop founded on principles from Meridian’s exclusive memory care program. These monthly workshops are vital as the global impact of dementia is staggering. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, as of 2015 there were 9.9 million new cases world-wide with one diagnosed every 3 seconds. With that in mind, all of us will be affected by Alzheimer’s in one way or another. Understanding the disease has become increasingly important in helping afflicted family members and loved ones experience better outcomes.

Caregiver Café is based on Montessori Moments in Time (MMIT), Meridian’s distinctive memory care programming, to offer families and caregivers strategies to cope with challenging times. The goals of MMIT at Legacy Oaks are to enhance living for those with memory challenges by using the five directional paths. Each directional path has the resident and family in mind to encourage independence and helps deal with the progression of Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementias. These paths include Family Connections, Health and Wellness, Dining Experience, Life Engagement, and Team Promise. Family Connections focus on the well-being of our families through social gatherings, volunteer opportunities, support, and education. Health and Wellness is based on providing satisfying experiences, promoting independence, and encouraging positive behavior while maintaining respect and dignity. The Dining Experience leverages meals as a time to reminisce, create new memories, maximize independence, and promote socializing, all in an inviting environment. Life Engagement includes scheduled programs that support the whole person allowing residents to function at their highest potential, giving them a sense of purpose and overall well-being. Team Promise focuses on developing care partnerships through ongoing education and training.

“When someone in the family has dementia, it changes everything,” states Sue Johnston, VP Program Development. “We understand the challenges you face and know that it is essential for you to have support, education, and an understanding of how important it is to take care of yourself.”

The Caregiver Café program offers an opportunity for caregivers of loved ones who suffer from Alzheimer’s or dementia to participate in a forum to ask questions while being surrounded by others going through their same situation. Legacy Oak’s onsite experts serve as a resource to provide support for the caregivers and to help them better understand their loved one’s condition. Caregiver Cafés are held on the last Wednesday of every month from 6pm-7pm at Legacy Oaks located at 1922 Morse Avenue in Sacramento, CA. Complimentary coffee and snacks are provided. Upcoming Caregiver Café topics include: Alive Inside featuring a Music and Memory Program on October 30th and Tips for the Holidays on November 27th.

Since workshop space is limited, interested participants should call (916) 822-7328 to R.S.V.P. at least one day before the event. For more information about Legacy Oaks, visit: legacyoaksofsacramento.com.

The Local Vapor Announces Support of Governor Tom Wolf’s Marijuana Legalization Initiative

The Local Vapor in Doylestown, PA

The Local Vapor, Bucks County’s upmarket vapor shop, today announced its support of Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf’s ongoing marijuana legalization efforts.

“We believe Governor Wolf’s support of marijuana legalization, both medical and recreational, bodes well for mindful, education-focused businesses like us.” — Ken Cala, Co-Owner and Executive Director, The Local Vapor

The Local Vapor, Bucks County’s leading retailer of premium e-liquids, vaping hardware and CBD products since 2014, today announced its support of Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf’s ongoing marijuana legalization efforts. The shop has carried CBD vape oils, as well as non-vapor CBD products derived from hemp, since 2015.

“As a leading voice in Bucks County’s vaping community, we hold a responsibility to help shape public perception of vapor products in a constructive, facts-based manner — particularly when it comes to the various forms and applications of cannabis,” said Ken Cala, Co-Owner and Executive Director of The Local Vapor. “We believe Governor Wolf’s support of marijuana legalization, both medical and recreational, bodes well for mindful, education-focused businesses like us.”

In September, Governor Wolf proposed a plan to legalize marijuana beyond medical uses, calling for the decriminalization of nonviolent cannabis-related crimes as well as the legalization of adult recreational marijuana use. The announcement followed Lt. Governor John Fetterman’s statewide recreational marijuana tour, which helped the administration understand Pennsylvania residents’ views on whether or not marijuana should be legalized.

Since signing the bill to legalize medical marijuana use in Pennsylvania in 2016, Wolf’s administration has worked to make medical marijuana more accessible for PA residents, announcing a total of 100,000 patient certifications issued as of April 2019. The availability of medical marijuana corresponds with the rise of non-psychoactive cannabidiol products, with many consumers now using CBD for anxiety treatment, pain management, and an array of other uses.

In response to this market trend, The Local Vapor has expanded their CBD offerings to include products like CBD gummies. The shop also promotes several vapor-free CBD product variants that can be applied topically or ingested orally.

“Our culture has made a lot of progress in de-stigmatizing responsible use of cannabis. Lots of our customers use CBD for anxiety and other health concerns, but it’s clear that there’s a bigger shift happening,” Cala said. “It’s important to us to be a part of that conversation as we continue to dispel misinformation in our industry and fight substance abuse.”

The announcement comes on the heels of two Pennsylvania state senators introducing Senate Bill 350 — also known as the Adult Use Cannabis bill — in Harrisburg on Tuesday. The bill, if passed into law, would legalize consumer and recreational use of marijuana in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
