Semper Fi Fund Serves as Largest Charity Partner 8 Years Running

News Image

“All of us at the Fund are humbled and inspired by the athletes who choose to represent and support the Fund by raising money for our critical mission, as well as all the staff and volunteers who support them. It’s always a weekend to remember!” – Karen Guenther, President, CEO, and Founder

With the 44th annual Marine Corps Marathon in Arlington, Virginia, this weekend, the Semper Fi Fund is anticipating bringing its largest charity partner team ever to “The People’s Marathon.” The event marks 8 years of the Semper Fi Fund (SFF) being the Marathon’s largest charity partner, with more than 750 athletes.

“The Marine Corps Marathon is always one of the highlights of the year for all of us at the Fund,” said Karen Guenther, President, CEO and Founder of the Semper Fi Fund. “Last year, we had more than 400 Community Athletes, and we raised over $500,000 in support of our mission. We’re hoping to exceed that at this year’s event! All of us at the Fund are humbled and inspired by the athletes who choose to represent and support the Fund by raising money for our critical mission, as well as all the staff and volunteers who support them. It’s always a weekend to remember!”

Team Semper Fi (TSF), the Semper Fi Fund’s adaptive sports program for wounded, ill and injured Service members, will also have its largest showing to date at the 44th Marine Corps Marathon, embodying the team’s motto “Recovery Through Sport.” TSF will have 10 athletes running the MCM 50K, 80 running the full marathon, 23 hand-cyclists, and 31 athletes running their first marathon. Rob Jones, a USMC veteran, motivational speaker, Paralympic athlete, and candidate for the VA 10th Congressional District 2020 election will be running the 50K for Team Semper FI.

The weekend includes a pre-race pasta dinner, which this year will be hosted by actor J.W. Cortes, known to television viewers as Detective Alvarez in Gotham and Agent Suarez in The Blacklist.

“I’m honored to be joining my brothers and sisters at the 44th Marine Corps Marathon,” said Cortes, who in 2017 ran both the 10k event in the Marine Corps Marathon and the New York City Marathon, both in support of the Semper Fi Fund. “I’m proud to be lending my support to the Fund, which is doing amazing work in providing assistance to those who have given, and continue to give, so much to us.”

The keynote speaker for the Semper Fi Fund’s annual pasta dinner will be General Joseph F. Dunford Jr. General Dunford served as the 19th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the nation’s highest-ranking military officer, and the principal military advisor to the President. He also served as the 36th Commandant of the Marine Corps from 2010 – 2012, the 32nd Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps from October 2010 – December 2012 and was the Commander of the International Security Assistance Force & US Forces Afghanistan from February 2013 to August 2014.

Miss D.C. for America 2019, Megan Eunpu, will also be running the MCM 10K. With her charity, Operation XYZ, Megan will be running the MCM 10K, and is hoping to raise over $2,500 for the Semper Fi Fund as well as Service members and their families. The Semper Fi Fund is honored to be the first non-profit to receive Operation WYZ’s support.

“The Semper Fi Fund has already done so much for injured Veterans, and their Families,” said Eunpu. “having a charity to run in support of fuels the fire even more! That is why I created Operation XYZ and am so proud to support the Semper Fi Fund for the first operation.”

The Marine Corps Marathon is the largest marathon in the world that doesn’t offer prize money, instead choosing to celebrate the honor, courage and commitment of all finishers. Over the years, it’s become known as “the best marathon for beginners.” SFF has 78 community athletes running their first marathon this year.

Those wishing to join the Fund October 27 can register online by visiting http://www.semperfifund.org/marine-corps-marathon-2019.

Vaping Linked to Infertility; Fertility Expert Weighs In

Fertility CARE (Center of Assisted Reproduction and Endocrinology): The IVF Center provides patient-centered, evidence-based, and individual customized reproductive care in a comfortable and compassionate setting.

Dr. Mark Trolice underscores the harmful effects of vaping on fertility.

“There is a misconception that e-cigarettes are safe to use during pregnancy. Anyone on their fertility journey should avoid the use of nicotine altogether.”

A study recently published in the Journal of the Endocrine Society suggests that women who use e-cigarettes may face difficulties in becoming pregnant, and that exposure to vaping could cause permanent health complications for the fetus [1]. Dr. Mark Trolice, Director of Fertility CARE: The IVF Center, notes that smoking regular cigarettes is already contraindicated for women seeking to become pregnant, and that vaping should be as well. “E-cigarettes are probably just as harmful to pregnancy and fertility as traditional cigarettes because they both have similar amounts of nicotine,” Dr. Trolice said. “There is a misconception that e-cigarettes are safe to use during pregnancy. Anyone on their fertility journey should avoid the use of nicotine altogether.”

In the new study, which was conducted by researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, mice were exposed to smoke from electronic cigarettes five times a week. This smoke exposure equaled the amount of smoke inhalation received by people who smoke e-cigarettes regularly. After four months of testing, researchers found that the exposed mice experienced what were described as significant delays in pregnancy and implantation [2].

Implantation, notes Dr. Trolice, is the first stage of pregnancy when the embryo adheres to the wall of the uterus and begins receiving oxygen and nutrients from the mother. The director of the new study indicated that while more research is needed, it seems likely that e-cigarette exposure in utero can cause lifelong changes to the fetal DNA and to fetal immune cardiovascular and nervous systems in mice [3].

These findings, says Dr. Trolice, come on the heels of a series of recent announcements of a mysterious and potentially fatal respiratory illness tied to vaping. As of mid-October, U.S. health officials had confirmed 33 deaths and 1,479 confirmed and probable cases so far. Kroger Company, Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. and Walmart Inc. have said they would stop selling e-cigarettes in their stores, and the Chinese ecommerce firm Alibaba Group has announced that it will stop selling e-cigarette components in the United States [4].

The journey to fertility,” says Dr. Trolice, “can be stressful, particularly for those who experience difficulty in conceiving. It is recommended to engage in healthy stress reduction activities such as exercise, yoga, and meditation – vaping is not one of them.”

“I strongly urge everyone—particularly those who might desire future childbearing—to stay away from vaping,” said Dr. Trolice. “It is a momentary fad that could ruin both your health, your opportunity to naturally conceive in the future and the health of your baby.”

The 4th Annual Amber Waves of Grain Festival Benefiting Veterans Appoints Off-Road Driver Justin Peck as Grand Marshall and Co-MC

100% of net proceeds will be donated to participating 501(c)3 veteran groups

The 4th Annual Amber Waves of Grain Craft Beer Festival Benefiting veterans

“I carry profound respect toward veterans and their selflessness serving our country. I will do whatever I can to support them through my verticals and voice. It is a privilege to participate in the Amber Waves of Grain Festival.” ~ Justin Peck #49

The All America Riders in partnership with the Blue Star Mothers (CA30) and Stone Church Brewing are gearing up for the 4th Annual Amber Waves of Grain Craft Beer Festival in support of American veterans on Nov. 2, 2019 from 12 PM to 4 PM at The Shops at Dos Lagos (located at 2780 Cabot Dr., Corona, CA 92883). California’s largest craft beer festival dedicated to those who have served will gift 100% of the proceeds from the event to the Riverside County veteran community. The Amber Waves of Grain committee is proud to announce champion Lucas Oil and Best in the Desert off-road driver and Mental Health Advocate, Justin Peck #49, as the Grand Marshall of this year’s festival. Justin Peck will co-MC alongside “The Marine of Comedy” Master Sergeant Kevin Davis and deliver an impromptu speech surrounding mental health.

Festival attendees will enjoy a craft beer garden featuring over 40 microbreweries and 4 homebrew clubs; UNLIMITED 4oz tastings with a commemorative festival pint glass; classic, vintage and current military cars and jeeps; military parade (12 PM-12:30 PM) w/ WWII Veterans, historical reenactment groups from the Revolutionary War to the Vietnam War, live music by the K-Tel All-Stars (singing your favorite 8-track songs from the 1970s), Justin Peck autograph signings, vendors, comedy, food trucks, and fun for the whole family.

Since 2016 the Amber Waves of Grain Festival has raised and distributed over $96,000 dollars to veteran support organizations such as Blue Star Mothers (CA30), All American Riders, American Legion, VFW, Marine Corps League, Cal-Vet, 4 Paws 4 Patriots Service Dogs, Southern California Wheelchair Veterans Association, Bob Hope USO, A New Start For Veterans, and many more. Funds have helped with the Christmas Dinner for Homeless Veterans, provided transportation and meals to homeless veterans, serve wounded members of the military who are attempting to return to civilian life with service dogs to provide both physical and emotional support, and to the Tadpole Foundation, who takes veterans to the high Eastern Sierras for hiking and kayaking to Montana for trout fishing and horseback riding, to name a few.

“I carry profound respect toward veterans and their selflessness serving our country. I will do whatever I can to support them through my verticals and voice. With over 30 percent of active duty and reserve military personnel deployed with mental health conditions requiring treatment – that’s approximately 730,000 men and women, less than 50 percent of returning vets receiving any mental health treatment at all, and 22 veterans dying by suicide every day, those statistics are alarming. It is a privilege to participate in the Amber Waves of Grain Festival.”         ~ Justin Peck

Tickets for the Amber Waves of Grain Festival can be purchased for $40 (general admission) and $100 (100 Patriots Who Care) at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/amber-waves-of-grain-craft-beer-festival-for-veterans-2019-tickets-69238501221?aff=ebdiglgoogleseo.

Considerations for Global Clinical Trials, Upcoming Webinar Hosted by Xtalks

https://www.prweb.com/

Xtalks Life Science Webinars

The presenters will outline critical considerations in the application of preclinical stage instruments into industry clinical trials, including those that become important as studies are longer in duration and are conducted across various regions of the world.

Preclinical Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is classified in individuals who show abnormal levels of amyloid, tau or neurodegenerative biomarkers but who do not meet any clinical criteria for dementia or mild cognitive impairment. Current estimates indicate that this preclinical AD stage can last for more than 10 years and so it provides a unique opportunity to understand the clinical-pathological sequelae of very early AD. This information can be used to develop and implement therapeutic strategies that can slow or even halt these processes, so as to forestall the development of symptoms.

Clinical trials designed to study interventions at the preclinical AD stage are using fit-for-purpose clinical outcome assessments that have high validity and reliability for the detection of cognitive change at this early stage of the illness. This has led to the development of novel cognitive, functional and patient-reported outcomes specifically designed for early-stage disease. These assessments have novel requirements for their delivery that differ markedly from the conventional instruments used in trials conducted for mild cognitive impairment and dementia.

Learn how to address potential challenges associated with preclinical AD assessments by joining experts from Cogstate, a leading science and technology solutions provider in a live webinar on Thursday, November 7, 2019 at 11am EST (4pm GMT/UK).

The presenters will outline critical considerations in the application of preclinical stage instruments into industry clinical trials, including those that become important as studies are longer in duration and are conducted across various regions of the world.

PMB celebrates grand opening of Goodyear Medical Plaza, formerly a movie theater, in Goodyear, Ariz

News Image

PMB converted the former Dickinson Palm Valley 14 movie theater at 1325 N. Litchfield Road in Goodyear, Ariz., into the 50,000 square foot Goodyear Medical Plaza.

PMB is proud of this beautiful facility and the innovation, collaboration and creative solutions that went into this exciting adaptive reuse project.

PMB, one of the nation’s leading real estate owners and developers across the continuum of care, is pleased to announce the completion of Goodyear Medical Plaza, a uniquely challenging adaptive reuse project that converted a 50,000-square-foot 1980s-era multiplex movie theater to a modern medical use.

A grand opening celebration for the project, which is currently 90 percent leased, is scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 24.

The repurposed facility is located at 1325 N. Litchfield Road in Goodyear, immediately west of the Abrazo West Campus, a 188-bed acute-care community hospital and Level 1 Trauma Center operated by Phoenix-based Abrazo Community Health Network.

“PMB is proud of this beautiful facility and the innovation, collaboration and creative solutions that went into this exciting adaptive reuse project,” says Mark Toothacre, President of the San Diego-based firm.

“The finished product incorporates high-profile features that rival new, build-to-suit medical office buildings, but our strategic adaptive reuse approach delivered a gorgeous facility on a construction schedule half that of a ground-up project. The newly repurposed project creates proximate, modern medical office space further providing growth space for Abrazo’s affiliated medical group.”

Goodyear Mayor Georgia Lord also praises the project.

“We are so excited to see the former cinema building come to life again,” Mayor Lord says. “Goodyear Medical Plaza is a perfect example of repurposing an empty building and turning it into vibrant office space. The newly revitalized structure enhances the area and brings new jobs and opportunity for growth to the Goodyear Medical Innovation Corridor.

“We are fortunate to have these talented physicians and medical businesses offering quality healthcare to our residents. Thank you PMB for your continued investment in Goodyear.”

PMB pursued the unique conversion in response to the need for Class A medical office space in this highly constrained on-campus market. The new building expands the Abrazo West Campus wound care program, and provides such outpatient services as imaging, multi-specialty care, internal medicine, pain management, wound care and physical therapy.

PMB retained the former theater’s generous 12-foot wide common hallways to create a patient-centric public corridor and added a beautiful and completely reworked building entry. PMB also took advantage of the 22-foot ceiling heights to create open spaces with great future flexibility.

In this adaptive reuse, PMB mitigated a number of challenges, including:

  • Space planning around load bearing demising walls between theaters by carefully planning clinical pods
  • Reconfiguring the common and tenant areas to eliminate elevation changes in the existing floors.
  • Modifying an extremely dated theater exterior to create a stylish, modern appearance with a dramatic building entry.

Goodyear, Arizona is a dynamic and rapidly growing city, recently ranked No. 22 as one of the “Best Places to Live” in the U.S. by Money.com. The city continues to put its name on the map with award-winning companies choosing to call Goodyear home including Fortune 500 companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, Nike, DaVita Inc., HD Supply and Darden Restaurants. PMB in yet another industry-leading company investing in the Goodyear community to positively impact health and well-being.

The project team included globally recognized architect SmithGroup and Arizona-based general contractor AK-SAR-Ben Companies Inc.

Recipients Named for ASDSA 2019 Patient Safety Hero Awards

Each of these Patient Safety Heroes worked tirelessly to promote sun safe behavior and reduce UV exposure. We appreciate each of these efforts toward this important cause, and these awards reflect our sincere gratitude for their dedication.

The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Association (ASDSA) is proud to announce the recipients of its annual Patient Safety Hero awards this week at the ASDS Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois.

ASDSA State Legislative Patient Safety Heroes

The ASDSA State Legislative Patient Safety Hero Award is presented to a state legislative member who has contributed significantly to a successful campaign centered on patient safety in his or her state. Two awardees were named in 2019: Illinois State Representative John Connor and Florida State Senator Travis Hutson. Representative Connor championed ASDSA’s SUNucate initiative in his home state of Illinois, bringing sun safety to children by allowing them to possess and apply sunscreen at school, while Senator Hutson worked to ensure Floridians have access to FDA-approved sunscreen without restrictions on ingredients.

ASDSA State Dermatological Society Patient Safety Hero

The ASDSA State Dermatological Society Patient Safety Hero Award is given to a state dermatological society that has worked effectively on behalf of the dermatologic surgery specialty and patient safety. This year’s winner is the Illinois Dermatological Society (IDS). IDS was a lead supporter during the need for SUNucate legislation, protecting children from skin cancer by allowing them to use sunscreen at school and day camps. Amy Derick, MD, is president of IDS and championed this initiative.

ASDSA Patient Safety Hero

Another organization that contributed significantly to the success of the Illinois state SUNucate legislation is the Pediatric Sun Protection Foundation, founded in 2012 by Amy Brodsky, MD, as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Its mission is to prevent skin cancer by educating children and caretakers about the dangers of childhood sun exposure.

“With 3.5 million skin cancer procedures performed last year by ASDSA members, awareness around prevention and early detection is as critical as ever,” said ASDSA President Murad Alam, MD, MBA. “Each of these Patient Safety Heroes worked tirelessly to promote sun safe behavior and reduce UV exposure. We appreciate each of these efforts toward this important cause, and these awards reflect our sincere gratitude for their dedication. ASDSA and its partners’ efforts are saving lives, and we want to acknowledge their part in making that happen.”
