Unruly Launches Active Play Coding Program for Elementary and Middle Schools

“We design our experiences to include physical play at the core of coding with classmates. Kids naturally create their own games on the playground, so we want to bring their creativity and rule-making to learning the fundamentals of code.”

Edtech company, Unruly Studios, is bringing their passion for combining physical activity with learning the basics of coding to schools. This Fall, the company launched their one-of-a-kind STEM learning tool and school bundles in schools across the US and Canada.

To encourage kids to be active while they code rather than sitting at a desk, the company created Unruly Splats – super-durable, programmable devices that light up, make sounds, and sense when they are stomped on. Students code Splats using the company’s block-coding app on a Chromebook or tablet to create their own games and play them with classmates. Students have created fun-to-play games like radioactive whack-a-mole, animal relay races, and obstacle courses around school desks to name a few.

Bryanne Leeming, CEO of Unruly said, “We originally envisioned Splats as a way for kids to learn to code at home, but since we announced the product earlier this year, we have had an incredible response from schools. We learned that teachers and principals are looking for an affordable, effective STEM tool and their students love the idea of programming games.”

While visiting elementary and middle schools, Leeming noticed that coding tools like robots and other STEM products frequently sitting unused on a shelf gathering dust.

Leeming explained, “I talked to over 150 principals who told me that many of their teachers are not experienced in computer programming or have never been trained to teach it. As a result, many STEM tools go underutilized. We realized there was a need for ongoing training and just-in-time support to help teachers integrate coding and STEM into their existing curriculum. To meet this need, we created a school plan that bundles our Splats and block coding app with live online training, lesson plans, support videos, and an online community where teachers can share and learn from each other.”

Throughout the development of Unruly Splats and the school plans, Leeming worked closely with Dr. Amon Millner, Olin College professor and co-founder of Scratch, a block-coding language developed at the MIT Media Lab. He played a key role in developing the block-coding system on the Unruly Splats App and provided insights into the needs of educators. Millner also helped create a series of video tutorials for educators using Unruly Splats to familiarize them with the Unruly App and the basics of coding concepts.

Millner explained, “We design our experiences to include physical play at the core of coding with classmates. Kids naturally create their own games on the playground, so we want to bring their creativity and rule-making to learning the fundamentals of code” We also developed a growing library of lesson plans that align with NGSS, CSTA, and PE standards for grades 1-7 to ensure that our offerings add value to a variety of school experiences.”

To kick off the launch of their school plans, Unruly is announcing a Twitter sweepstakes contest open to any school teacher or administrator in the US and Canada. They are giving away a 12-Splat 1-Year School Plan valued at $1,200. The contest is held on their twitter account and runs until October 31st, 2019.

Unruly Studios has already seen the contest take off in the first few days. Leeming stated, “It’s been great to see enthusiastic entries from teachers and hear their creative ideas for Splats! For example, we have had a ton of excitement from PE teachers who are thrilled to bring Splats to their PE classes.”

About Unruly Studios: Unruly Studios is an edtech company that empowers students to learn critical STEM skills through active, social recess-style play! Their flagship product, Unruly Splats, are super-durable, programmable devices that light up, make sounds, and sense when they are stomped on. Splats were designed as an affordable school-wide tool that integrates easily into a variety of elementary and middle school learning spaces, including: STEM, PE, Technology classes, Libraries, After-School Programs, and Makerspaces.

“Named after a nationally recognized pioneer in home economics, Nellie Kedzie Jones, who was a champion for rural women homemakers, Aunt Nellie’s has been a pantry staple for generations and will be celebrating its 90th birthday this fall with a national promotion.”

Historically, 1929 was a big year! It was the end of the Roaring Twenties, the start of the Great Depression and the year that launched of one of America’s iconic brands – Aunt Nellie’s. Named after a nationally recognized pioneer in home economics, Nellie Kedzie Jones, who was a champion for rural women homemakers, Aunt Nellie’s has been a pantry staple for generations and will be celebrating its 90th birthday this fall with a national promotion.

To honor its humble roots and the historic era from which it started, Aunt Nellie’s will be celebrating the origins of potluck meals with its 90th Birthday Potluck Part y. Created out of need during the Great Depression, potlucks grew in popularity as a beloved way to entertain and gather family and friends and are still going strong 90 years later. From October 21 through November 22, Aunt Nellie’s will be celebrating several popular potluck themes, from tailgating to Thanksgiving, with new recipes each week. Additionally America’s potluck queen, Ali Rosen, host of the Potluck with Ali TV show and author of the bestselling cookbook, Bring It, will be sharing valuable preparation and transportation tips to help ensure each gathering’s success. Other leading food bloggers contributing to the festivities include An Edible Mosaic, Eclectic Recipes, The Chef Next Door, and bell’alimento.

“Like everything old that is new again, potlucks are resurging in an era where people want to go back to a time where hosting could be fun, casual, and full of great food without everything landing on the host. Any gathering of friends and family can be a potluck – if someone brings the salad or the dessert it suddenly becomes a more communal experience that brings people further together,” said Rosen. “I’m excited to partner with Nellie’s on this 90th milestone birthday and to celebrate classic entertaining with a classic brand.”

Aunt Nellie’s also is upping the “Aunty” by inviting everyone to host their own potluck party for a chance to win a $500 donation to their local food bank as well as $250 VISA gift card and an Aunt Nellie’s family pack for themselves. Hosts can enter two ways:

FSHD Society to Hold Landmark “Voice of the Patient” Meeting

News Image

Input from patients can inform the FDA’s decisions and oversight both during drug development and during its review of a marketing application.

The FSHD Society announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved its application to hold an externally led Patient-Focused Drug Development (EL-PFDD) meeting on facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy. This meeting, a key component of the Society’s Therapeutic Accelerator initiative, has been scheduled for April 21, 2020, in College Park, Maryland. The Muscular Dystrophy Association and Friends of FSH Research will be supporting and participating as well.

The PFDD meetings, started in 2012 by the FDA, are used to obtain patient perspectives on specific diseases and their treatments. The demand from disease advocacy groups to have the meetings quickly exceeded the agency’s capacity, and so the FDA set up a mechanism for groups to apply to organize “externally led” PFDD meetings.

According to the FDA, “PFDD meetings give FDA and other key stakeholders, including medical product developers, health care providers, federal partners, an important opportunity to hear directly from patients, their families, caregivers, and patient advocates about the symptoms that matter most to them, the impact the disease has on patients’ daily lives, and patients’ experiences with currently available treatments. This input can inform FDA’s decisions and oversight both during drug development and during our review of a marketing application.”

The FSHD Society’s EL-PFDD meeting will provide individuals with FSHD, caregivers, and other stakeholders an opportunity to share their experiences and preferences so that the FDA and the biopharmaceutical industry can:

  • understand the FSHD patient journey, and recognize patient preferences and risk tolerance so these may be translated into improved clinical trial designs, selection criteria, and development of outcome measures relevant to FSHD drug development;
  • demonstrate the complexity and heterogeneity of FSHD, with the end goal of development programs and trial designs that will reflect these aspects of the disease;
  • create a practical, scientifically rigorous framework that incorporates patient preferences and patient-reported outcomes into FSHD clinical research to ensure that trials are measuring not only statistical success, but also demonstrating meaningful benefit to individuals with FSHD;
  • better understand patient and caregiver perceptions about the treatments they are currently using, which treatments are most beneficial, and which ones may have side effects;
  • encourage identification and use of approaches and best practices to facilitate patient enrollment and minimize the burden of patient participation in clinical trials; and
  • ensure that people with FSHD understand the value of their participation in clinical trials, and how their input impacts FDA and biopharmaceutical industry decision-making and outcomes at all levels to both improve their own health-related quality of life as well as that of others with FSHD, now and in the future.

Prior to the meeting, the FSHD Society plans to distribute online surveys to some 3,500 patients and family members in its contact database, as well as more than 5,000 members of various FSHD-focused Facebook groups. In addition, the Society will collect patient comments over its social media channels and conduct in-person focus group discussions through its national chapter program and Family Day conferences.

“Data from these surveys and other methods will be used to shape the content and selection of panelists for the April meeting,” explained June Kinoshita, Chief Strategic Programs Officer of the FSHD Society. “We urge patients and caregivers who want their voices to be included in this process to make sure they are on the Society’s mailing list.”

To be included on the FSHD Society’s mailing list, please sign up here.

About the FSHD Society

The FSHD Society is the world’s largest research-focused patient organization for facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD), one of the most prevalent forms of muscular dystrophy. The Society has catalyzed major advancements and is accelerating the development of treatments and a cure to end the pain, disability, and suffering endured by one million people worldwide who live with FSHD. The FSHD Society has transformed the landscape for FSHD research and is committed to making sure that no one faces this disease alone. The Society offers a community of support, news, and information through its website at https://www.fshdsociety.org.
