New Advancements In Cataract Surgery Eliminates The Need Of Glasses

West Boca Eye Center

West Boca Eye Center

Use of the AcrySof ReSTOR is one of the leading intraocular lens implant selections used by leading eye surgeon, Brent Bellotte, MD, at the West Boca Eye Center.

Cataracts are an all-too-common condition that develop in everyone as they age. They can also be caused by disease, the use of steroid medications, and injury to the eye. The condition causes gradual deterioration to the lens within the eye, reducing vision dramatically and having a very real impact on the quality of life. Up until recently, while cataract surgery was able to remove such affected lenses, ophthalmologists had only a single choice of monofocal artificial lens to use as a replacement. This meant that many patients still had to rely on the use of corrective lenses after the procedure was carried out.

In recent years, revolutionary advances in technology have brought about several new multifocal, premium intraocular lenses (IOLs). Their recent FDA approval means that eye surgeons can now tailor-make a solution that fits with the individual characteristics of the patient’s eye, as well as their personal lifestyle needs.

The Custom Cataract Surgery Breakthrough

Historically, the majority of patients who underwent cataract surgery still had to use eye-glasses post-procedure. This was because artificial lenses only corrected issues such as near and farsightedness. Conditions, such as astigmatism or presbyopia, still warranted the use of glasses or contact lenses. Many people also had issues with night vision—such as the appearance of halos or glare—as well as difficulty focusing in situations such as driving, reading, or viewing a computer due to this residual refractive error with standard IOLs.

The development and approval of premium IOLs, such as trifocal, accommodative, multifocal, and toric implants, have proved game-changing. The use of these allows eye doctors to determine the type of lens necessary for the individual, based on personal vision issues, as well as their particular lifestyle needs—in some cases, reducing or even completely eliminating your glasses or contact lenses afterwards.

Groundbreaking Technology, Patented Optic Design

One of the remarkable lens implants utilized in this innovative cataract surgery is the AcrySof ReSTOR. This is a patented design that’s been proven in multiple FDA clinical trials to provide the majority of patients with the life-changing advantage of near-perfect vision, without the use of glasses, following the simple surgical procedure.

Use of the AcrySof ReSTOR is one of the leading intraocular lens implant selections used by leading eye surgeon, Brent Bellotte, MD, at the West Boca Eye Center. The unique aspect of the lens is that it utilizes a combination of three complementary techniques, known as apodization, diffraction, and refraction. These provide the eye with the ability to once again focus easily and quickly at various distances—near, far, and immediate—as well as delivering clear vision in all lighting situations.

The Highest Level Of Freedom From Glasses Ever Demonstrated In IOL Clinical Trials

FDA clinical trials show that 80 percent of patients who had the lens implanted experienced total freedom from glasses/contact lenses post-implant, 94 percent could read the paper and drive, and nearly 94 percent would happily have the procedure again.

The patented AcrySof ReSTOR is proven to offer the highest level of freedom from glasses post-procedure of any artificial lens ever brought to market. Combining quality vision with lifestyle enhancement means that patients have more choices than ever at finding an optical solution that’s completely tailored to their individual needs.

The suitability of such multifocal IOLs is something individuals need to consider with the professional advice of their eye doctor. Dr. Brent Bellotte and the team at the West Boca Eye Center are pioneers of such surgery, working with each person to determine their ultimate bespoke solution. Patients at the clinic benefit from the very latest advancements in vision solutions, with Brent Bellotte MD being an industry leader in the specialty of cataract surgery and has been voted the nation’s top ophthalmologist.

American College of Lifestyle Medicine Announces Addition of Clinical Care Innovator Silver Fern Healthcare to its Lifestyle Medicine Corporate Roundtable

News Image

“Silver Fern Healthcare focuses on the 60% of what drives health outcomes and gives clinicians actionable care paths to improve patient outcomes and reduce costs.”

The American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) today announced the addition of Silver Fern Healthcare to its Lifestyle Medicine Corporate Roundtable, a group of individuals and organizations whose collective vision is sustainable human health, a sustainable health care system and a sustainable world.

Silver Fern Healthcare combines behavior medicine expertise with a state-of-the-art digital platform to deliver a distinctive integrated toolset for use in routine clinical care. While clinicians routinely order a range of diagnostic tests, including clinical, laboratory, pathology, radiology and genetic screenings, until now they have not had access to practical screenings for behavior and psychosocial issues that are critical to diabetes care and a professional challenge for front-line primary care clinicians. Silver Fern’s proprietary Behavior Diagnostic Platform for chronic disease management has shown in rigorous, real-world, community and clinical settings to significantly improve health outcomes for people living with chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and provides actionable suggestions and care pathways for providers and health care networks.

Moreover, Silver Fern’s integrated digital health system offers practical solutions for implementing the new American Diabetes Association (2016) clinical care guidelines by simplifying assessment and management of patient behaviors, goals and barriers, as well as psychosocial problems, to improve treatment engagement and to help them cope with the burden of treatment. For clinicians, the program provides readily accessible, actionable reports which integrate into an existing electronic medical record and team workflows.

“Silver Fern Healthcare delivers practical, highly scalable behavior and psychosocial diagnostic solutions to clinicians to use with patients who have chronic diseases,” said Silver Fern Chief Scientific Officer Garry Welch. “We focus on the 60% of what drives health outcomes and give clinicians actionable care paths to improve patient outcomes and reduce costs.”

“Silver Fern has cracked the code to better outcomes by focusing on the behavior and psychosocial aspects of chronic disease,” said ACLM President Dexter Shurney, MD, MBA, FACLM, DipABLM. “By identifying critical behavior and psychosocial issues in patients with chronic disease, clinicians can tailor motivational and educational resources to drive optimal health outcomes. The company’s mission to improve the quality of life and health outcomes for patients living with chronic disease worldwide is in direct alignment with ACLM’s. We welcome them to our Corporate Roundtable.”

The Corporate Roundtable of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine convenes health care and lifestyle thought leaders, with a keen focus on the power of Lifestyle Medicine to transform health and health care. Roundtable members explore effective Lifestyle Medicine clinical applications, strategies for accelerating reimbursement, and adoption and analysis of potential business-related opportunities. The Roundtable launched in 2015 and has grown to include more than 30 active member organizations.

ABOUT THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF LIFESTYLE MEDICINE: ACLM is the medical professional society for those dedicated to the advancement and clinical practice of Lifestyle Medicine as the foundation of a transformed and sustainable health care system. Lifestyle Medicine is the use of a whole food, plant-predominant dietary lifestyle, regular physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substances and positive social connection as a primary therapeutic modality for treatment and reversal of chronic disease.

More than a professional association, ACLM is a galvanized force for change. ACLM addresses the need for quality education and certification, supporting its members in their individual practices and in their collective mission to domestically and globally promote Lifestyle Medicine as the first treatment option, as opposed to a first option of treating symptoms and consequences with expensive, ever increasing quantities of pills and procedures. ACLM members are united in their desire to identify and eradicate the root cause of disease. Learn more at http://www.LifestyleMedicine.org.

DEA Drug Take Back Day Backed by National Association of Chain Drug Stores

Survey results

Americans consider drug disposal and other strategies to be effective in addressing the opioid abuse epidemic.

With all eyes on this issue during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, it also is important to note the many other strategies that create a comprehensive approach to preventing opioid abuse and addiction while caring for those in pain.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is a chance to help keep opioids out of the wrong hands and to raise awareness of other critical resources that help keep patients, families and communities safe, the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) said today.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and its partners showcase this event on October 26, 2019, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

“NACDS stands with the DEA, with law enforcement, with first responders, and with other community leaders who are helping Americans dispose of unused opioids, and helping prevent these drugs from becoming part of the problem. We are helping to create the surround sound that is necessary to raise awareness of National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. NACDS members offer safe drug disposal options in thousands of locations nationwide, have donated the resources to offer these services in thousands of other locations, and have made possible the disposal of millions of pounds of these and other drugs,” said NACDS President & CEO Steven C. Anderson, IOM, CAE.

“NACDS members offer diverse drug disposal solutions that are right for their particular stores and communities. These include secure kiosks, innovative solutions that safely destroy unwanted opioids, as well as other solutions. With all eyes on this issue during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, it also is important to note the many other strategies that create a comprehensive approach to preventing opioid abuse and addiction while caring for those in pain.”

A national survey conducted by Morning Consult and commissioned by NACDS October 17-20, 2019, found that voters recognize the effectiveness of an array of opioid-abuse prevention strategies.

The survey asked, “In your opinion, how effective or ineffective do you believe each of these initiatives are for reducing the abuse of legal, prescribed opioids?” The results were:

  • “Support patient and provider education on the risks of opioids” – 66% effective/19% ineffective/15% don’t know or no opinion
  • “Participate in prescription drug monitoring programs, which tracks patient behaviors that may contribute to the opioid epidemic” – 64% effective/18% ineffective/18% don’t know or no opinion
  • “Promote access to naloxone, a medication to prevent overdose” – 52% effective/24% ineffective/24% don’t know or no opinion
  • “Participate in the disposal of unused medications to stem abuse” – 62% effective/21% ineffective/18% don’t know or no opinion
  • “Cooperate with programs that help prescribers, pharmacies, and distributors comply with regulations that pertain to opioids” – 64% effective/19% ineffective/18% don’t know or no opinion
  • “Sponsor community programs that focus on educating the public about opioids, and rehabilitating those with addiction” – 67% effective/19% ineffective/15% don’t know or no opinion.

In addition to pharmacies’ engagement in these initiatives, NACDS advances public policy recommendations designed to further address the opioid abuse epidemic.

More information about related policy issues is available at NACDS’ Access Agenda website.

West Monroe Partners, a national business and technology consultancy, today announced that it has been named one of the Dallas Business Journal’s 2019 Best Places to Work in North Texas. West Monroe ranked third among medium-sized companies with 50 to 249 employees in the region. The award honors the top 100 businesses in the Dallas-Fort Worth area with the highest rankings in employee satisfaction, company culture, and overall benefits.

West Monroe is one of 36 companies appearing on the list for the first time. The Dallas Business Journal announced the list of best workplaces on July 24 and honored them at an event yesterday.

“As an organization whose mission is centered on building the next generation of leaders, the quality of our workplace is extremely important to us. This award reflects the care and attention our Dallas colleagues have put into building a winning culture in just a few short years,” said Tom Hulsebosch, senior managing director and leader of West Monroe’s Dallas office. “We are pleased that our vision of a strong employee-driven culture, employee ownership, and leadership in our community has been recognized among the exceptional companies in this dynamic business market.”

Like all West Monroe offices, the Dallas office maintains a highly participatory and collaborative culture marked by an open work environment, frequent team-building events, and a strong commitment to serving the local community. The office relocated to One Arts Plaza in January 2019, following an announcement in 2018 of plans to triple its local workforce over the next five years.

“We are thrilled to be included among the top workplaces in North Texas and extremely proud of what our team is building together. This award is particularly gratifying because it is based on feedback from our people and reflective of their pride in being part of this organization,” said Adam Gersting, senior director and Technology practice leader for the region. “Our rapid growth is creating exceptional opportunities for business consulting and technology professionals to join our team at all levels and continue to develop as leaders and stewards of the business.”

Nationally, West Monroe has been recognized among top workplaces by Consulting® magazine, Great Place to Work® Institute and FORTUNE, and Crain’s, among others. The company earned 26 awards in 2018 for its people-first culture.

This is the publication’s 17th annual best workplace award program. The Dallas Business Journal’s Best Places to Work results are divided into five categories based on company size and measured by employee responses from an anonymous employee survey conducted by Quantum Workplace. As A Proud National Team of Alzheimer’s Association

News Image

“As an organization, we were looking to give back to our community in a way that would build off of the work we do in our centers each day. We knew if we could leverage our organization as a whole toward something our team members were already interested in, the impact would be widespread.”

Villa Healthcare is honored to be a National Team with the Alzheimer’s Association for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. With almost 4,000 patients and residents treated at the 34 skilled nursing facilities it supports in five Midwest regions, Villa has an organizational connection to Alzheimer’s as it impacts not only our guests, but also our team members and families.

“As an organization, we were looking to give back to our community in a way that would build off of the work we do in our centers each day. When looking to pair community efforts with a relevant cause, we noticed many of our team members were already participating in various Alzheimer’s awareness efforts. We knew if we could leverage our organization as a whole toward something our team members were already interested in, the impact would be widespread” said Toni Fimowicz, Alzheimer’s National Team Leader and National Director of Organizational Development at Villa.

As an organization with 4,500 employees, Alzheimer’s also impacts Villa’s team members through their families and friends. “When we shared our plans to participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, it was incredible to see the connections we were able to form with each other through learning why they walked and how Alzheimer’s Disease had touched their lives, both professionally and personally. This is one of the most rewarding (and unexpected) aspects of our participation, being able to build relationships and to support our team members, throughout our organization” said Marissa Kalama, Alzheimer’s National Team Leader and Director of Villa Referral Management.

The work Villa has been doing to be a National Team with the Alzheimer’s Association has brought together not only the organizational development goals and the employees, but also the five regions. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Saturday, October 26 at Soldier Field in Chicago is the culmination of eleven walks from August to October, in all five regions that Villa supports skilled nursing facilities. Additionally, each of the regions highlighted creativity in their fundraising. In Michigan North, the Villa team partnered with an animal shelter to raise funds for both causes through an event hosted in the region and in Michigan South, the Villa team collected bottles and cans at each facility to raise money through collecting the deposits. Wisconsin’s team hosted a backpack raffle with donated backpacks and back to school supplies. In Illinois there was a bingo night hosted at the central support office. Minnesota focused on increasing the number of walk participants through registration rallies. And, always a popular fundraiser, all regions hosted bake sales. To date, almost $27,000 has been raised, and the team is hopeful to far exceed 2018’s donation of $26,000. Villa will match 50% of the funds raised by the team.

Colo Solutions Achieves 5 Consecutive Years of SOC 1, HIPAA, and PCI Compliance

The company’s five consecutive years of SOC compliance reflects their long-standing dedication to service organization controls, including both physical security and environmental security.

Colo Solutions, a colocation and cloud services provider located in downtown Orlando, Florida, today announced successful completion of their 2019 SOC 1 Type 2 examination, HIPAA Security Compliance assessment, and PCI DSS assessment.

As the company’s top priority, “customer needs” are the driving force behind the comprehensive initiative, noted Clayton Mynard, CEO.

The company’s five consecutive years of SOC compliance reflects their long-standing dedication to service organization controls, including both physical security and environmental security. Meanwhile, their HIPAA compliance demonstrates their secure handling of electronic protected health information (ePHI), and PCI-DSS compliance provides additional confirmation of the company’s secure payment data handling methods.

While data protection is a concern for any company that handles client information, Colo Solutions serves a vast range of industries – from healthcare to retail – necessitating a broad range of compliance initiatives.

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) defines policies and procedures required of companies that store, process, or handle ePHI, and has become increasingly mandatory for service providers working with other organizations that store healthcare data.

The ¬Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard, or PCI-DSS, is the most widely used and industry-recognized payment card security standard available. With payment breaches on the rise, ensuring an organization meets the most up-to-date PCI-DSS requirements is crucial for preventing financial and reputational damage.

Completion of the SOC 1 examination demonstrates a company’s commitment to safeguarding their client’s infrastructure. Companies that complete annual SOC 1 examinations are able to demonstrate a substantially higher level of security assurance and operational visibility as compared to those companies without an examination.

Colo Solutions’ proactivity helps set them apart from their competitors. Additionally, by taking an integrated approach to cybersecurity audits, they were able to streamline the process for their own team, while achieving a more comprehensive review of their controls.

All three efforts were completed by the professional and independent third-party audit firm, 360 Advanced, Inc. Leveraging the continuity and cohesiveness of a single engagement, Colo Solutions was able to achieve a more seamless examination and a more thorough review of their controls.

About Colo Solutions

Colo Solutions Group LLC is a privately-owned carrier-neutral data center in downtown Orlando providing colocation and cloud services. FDA Breakthrough Designation expedites the Agency’s review of medical devices that can provide for more effective treatment or diagnosis of life-threatening or irreversibly debilitating diseases or conditions.

Affinimark’s CSF test works much like a pregnancy test, yielding a positive or negative result when suspected fluid is tested. The immediate feedback assists the clinician making a diagnosis and helps to determine if any intervention is necessary to address a CSF leak. CSF supports and bathes the brain and central nervous system. Leaks occur when a tear or hole forms in the dura, the membrane that surrounds the brain and spinal cord, allowing fluid to seep out, increasing the risk of infection.

“The FDA’s granting of Breakthrough Designation for our CSF Test Strip underscores the urgent need for a diagnostic tool that provides on-the-spot, immediate results upon suspicion of a CSF leak in patients,” said Ellie Tandler, President and Chief Executive Officer at Affinimark. “CSF leaks increase the risk of meningitis and other neurological complications, so timely diagnosis and urgent and effective repair of the defect are essential. We appreciate the review and decision by the FDA and plan to work closely with the Agency to commercialize our CSF Test Strip by early 2021.”

Among the benefits of FDA Breakthrough Designation are a commitment from the FDA for more rapid review timelines, ongoing discussion and submission review, and access to FDA senior management to develop a plan that is as least burdensome as possible and allows for some measure of flexibility and adjustment. The FDA’s decision was based on recognition of Affinimark’s CFS Test Strip as a timely diagnostic tool that can aid in the diagnosis of CSF leakages more quickly than other available in vitro diagnostic (IVD) devices with the same or similar intended use.

“Our device has completed proof-of-concept and prototyping. We are raising a Series C round of financing to fund the clinical trial and analytical bench testing of the strip over the next 18 months for a de novo 510(k) submission to the FDA by Q1 2021,” added Tandler.

Current technologies for detecting CSF fluid leaks, such as imaging and scans, are time-consuming, expensive and inconvenient for the patient. A beta-2 transferrin lab test can detect CSF; however, the test requires a relatively large volume sample (as compared with Affinimark’s test), can be cumbersome to run and can produce inaccurate results when blood is present in the sample. Its performance data have not been reviewed by the FDA.
