Nevium Hires Former IRS Officer and Cannabis Valuation Pioneer William K. Fowler

Bill is the field’s leading expert on all aspects of cannabis taxation.

Nevium Intellectual Property Consultants (Nevium) has hired former IRS Federal Commissioned Officer William K. Fowler to extend its business valuation practice with a focus on the cannabis industry and cannabis related intellectual property (IP). With 30 years’ financial and valuation experience, primarily in federal taxation involving the highest-net-worth individuals and corporations in the U.S., Fowler brings deep tax strategy capability to the firm.

“Bill helped develop many valuation practices and business evaluation techniques the IRS still uses today to ensure business owners pay the appropriate amount of taxes,” says Brian Buss, Co-founder of Nevium. “We are pleased to have him on board, putting that knowledge to work helping our clients leverage their IP and prepare for and avoid taxation disputes and audits.”

In joining Nevium, Fowler also brings his leading-edge valuation practices for cannabis businesses, adapted from the approach he developed at the IRS to uncover hidden worth.

“With a tax code that prevents cannabis businesses from claiming deductions on regular business expenses, they require sophisticated planning, from tax strategy to valuation of their IP portfolio, which can mitigate their tax burden,” says Doug Bania, Co-founder of Nevium. “Bill is the field’s leading expert on all aspects of cannabis taxation.”

Prior to joining Nevium, Fowler owned his own valuation firm, W.K. Fowler & Associates; served as a federal commissioned officer for the U.S. Treasury, where he worked on large cases for the Los Angeles and San Francisco division; worked as a business broker for Corporate Investment Network; and served as Senior Financial Management Associate for Pacific Lighting Corporation (now Sempra Energy).

His professional designations include Emeritus AVA, CFFA, and ABAR (Accredited Valuation Analyst and Certified Forensic Financial Analyst) with the National Association of Certified Valuation Analyst, as well as Emeritus ABAR (Accredited Business Appraisal Reviewer) with the Institute of Business Appraisers, now NACVA.

Fowler was the first individual in the United States to obtain the designation of ABAR (Accredited Business Appraisal Reviewer). This designation recognizes professionals who have met the stringent requirements and have proven competence in the review of business appraisal reports.

An Army Veteran, Fowler holds a degree in Business Administration from University of the Redlands.

Beckman Foundation Announces Funding for Light-Sheet Microscopy and Data Science

Instrumentation Grant for Advanced Light-Sheet Microscopy and Data Science

This grant has two aims: To provide access to this cutting-edge technology, and also to incorporate the data science experts in the core program teams for innovations in data analysis techniques and sharing results with the broader research community.

The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation today announced an open call for proposals from nonprofit U.S. universities and research institutions for its Instrumentation Grant for Advanced Light-Sheet Microscopy and Data Science. The grant will provide support of up to $1.2 million per site for the acquisition of instrumentation, development and maintenance; support for data science collaborations within research teams; and costs for proposed research programs. Investing in this instrumentation underscores the Foundation’s mission of supporting research breakthroughs in chemistry and the life sciences.

Light-sheet microscopy, recognized with the 2014 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Betzig, Hell and Moerner, uses a plane of light to perpendicularly illuminate a cross-section of a sample, permitting the user to rapidly produce high-resolution images while imposing less stress and damage on the sample than with conventional light microscopy. The Foundation is eager to expand access to the dynamic, 3D, and long-term imaging capabilities offered by light-sheet microscope modalities such as super-resolution light-sheet, lattice light-sheet, Airy beam light-sheet, single-optic light-sheet, and multi-photon imaging in order to tackle new biological questions enabled by these advanced imaging techniques.

“The Beckman Foundation has identified advanced light-sheet microscopy as an exciting new technology area that has the potential to help answer many challenging research questions. This grant has two aims: To provide access to this cutting-edge technology, and also to incorporate the data science experts in the core program teams for innovations in data analysis techniques and sharing results with the broader research community,” explained Dr. Anne Hultgren, Beckman Foundation’s Executive Director. “In 2017 we introduced a similar grant that brought Cryo-EM technology to several institutions, and we are excited to make a new instrumentation investment that will increase access to the field of light-sheet microscopy.”

Proposal details and instructions are available on the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation application submission portal. Questions regarding eligibility can be directed to Dr. Anne Hultgren at InstrumentGrants@beckman-foundation.org. Program awards are tentatively scheduled to be funded by May 2021.

Having a support network that understands the core issues and complexities plays a significant – yet often overlooked – role in lasting recovery, and Lara Lyn Bell’s strong voice offers guidance and solidarity throughout the journey. – Kirsten Haglund

Finding the best care and providing support can be overwhelming for the families and friends of those who suffer from eating disorders, but with increased awareness comes a greater ability to combat them. Families, friends, doctors, therapists and recovered advocates have shared their expertise under the collective pen name, Lara Lyn Bell, to By Their Side: A Resource for Caretakers and Loved Ones Facing an Eating Disorder (Brown Books Publishing Group). Releasing on November 12, 2019, By Their Side empowers caregivers to better understand their loved ones’ suffering and provide support while also maintaining balance and care for themselves.

The forty contributors to this book believe that their first-hand testimonials, technical knowledge and actionable guidance will serve as a lifeline empowering readers as they continue fighting alongside their loved one struggling with an eating disorder. No matter how dark the moment feels, there is hope for full and comprehensive healing. Through partnerships, a portion of the proceeds from this book will be dedicated to those who cannot afford treatment.

“By Their Side is a moving and much-needed book, because it speaks directly to the caregivers, friends, and families of those battling an eating disorder,” Kirsten Haglund, global business development and digital director for Eating Disorder Hope, says. “Having a support network that understands the core issues and complexities plays a significant – yet often overlooked – role in lasting recovery, and Lara Lyn Bell’s strong voice offers guidance and solidarity throughout the journey.”

The companion piece from Lara Lyn Bell, entitled Working by Their Side: A Guided Journal for Caretakers of Loved Ones Facing an Eating Disorder, follows along with each chapter of its main book, creating sections for discovery and learning, helping both the reader and their loved one deal with the complexities of an eating disorder. This hands-on tool is designed to personalize the healing process through prompts, educational components and self-reflection offering a healthy start in recovery.

“In addition to reading By Their Side, working simultaneously in the companion workbook will be one of the caretaker’s greatest assets in their journey,” states Bethany Haley Williams, PhD, LCSW, Founder and CEO of Exile International. “It will put them steps ahead in the therapeutic process as they walk toward health and healing.”

Gulf Breeze Recovery on the Employment Risk Associated with Drug and Alcohol Abuse

Counseling at Gulf Breeze Recovery

“Many of our guests started their journey to addiction using opioids that were originally prescribed for work-related injuries. Unfortunately, after the physical injuries healed, they were left with addiction.” Barnett Gilmer, Executive Director, Gulf Breeze Recovery

A person’s employment may put them at higher risk for drug and alcohol abuse. A study completed with 293,492 participants using data collected from 2005 – 2014 to explore if drug and alcohol use varied between occupations. The results were recently published and show varying risks of substance use according to the occupation.

Tying for the first-place spot as the highest risk jobs for substance use or misuse are construction and extraction jobs such as blasting, boring, drilling or mining. Not surprisingly, these positions are considered higher risk jobs for injuries, and that in part, is why they are also at higher risk for drug and alcohol abuse. In these job fields, the most commonly abused substances are marijuana, cocaine, and non-medically prescribed opioids.

Workers at construction and extraction jobs are at daily risks of falls, over-exertion, or injuries from heavy equipment. Injury rates and fatalities are high. Much of the work is repetitive and basically hard physical labor. Self-medicating the job-related pain they suffer by using marijuana or opioids is common. In a catch 22, the use of marijuana or opioids puts them at even higher risk for work-related injuries, as well as accidental overdoses.

Research also shows that continuity of work can affect employee rates of substance use. Those who have regular schedules and don’t miss work are less likely to use substances than those who have sporadic employment where they miss shifts of work or have an unstable work schedule. Odds for opioid misuse doubled for workers who missed three to five days of work within a month due to injury or illness.

Employers can take steps to decrease drug and alcohol abuse on the job. Research has indicated that employees of companies with written drug policies are less likely to use cocaine. Workplace drug testing resulted in lower rates of marijuana use with employees. When workplace alcohol testing and drug screens are a part of the hiring process and termination from employment occurs from a positive drug test, fewer employees use marijuana.

Creating a fair and effective drug policy can be difficult since both opioids and marijuana may be used either as medically prescribed or recreationally. It is prudent, however, that substance abuse prevention and harm reduction programs are in place in companies where employees are working high-risk jobs to prevent both drug-related risks of injuries and accidents and to decrease overdose mortality with this high-risk population.

Barnett Gilmer, Executive Director of Gulf Breeze Recovery, a residential drug and alcohol abuse treatment facility in the Florida panhandle, stated, “Many of our guests started their journey to addiction using opioids that were originally prescribed for work-related injuries. Unfortunately, after the physical injuries healed, they were left with addiction. Helping them recover from that addiction is our job.”

About Gulf Breeze Recovery: Gulf Breeze Recovery is a holistic treatment center in Florida that is changing the future of treatment for drug and alcohol abuse with the THRIVE® program, which is focused on overcoming chronic relapse. Gulf Breeze Recovery’s THRIVE® program is a non-12-step approach and individualized designed for those who are looking for a drug and alcohol abuse treatment program to produce a different and positive result. This non-12 step program allows you to drive beyond your addictions and promotes a new outlook on life. Opioid-Related Claims Data Underscore Significance & Impact of Epidemic

Coverys, a leading provider of medical professional liability insurance, today released its latest Red Signal Report on opioids. The report analyzes five years of closed opioid-related malpractice claims to identify the major risk factors, warning signs, and safety vulnerabilities within the pain management process. Additionally, it addresses evidence-based risk recommendations and practice changes offered to improve patient safety and reduce malpractice exposure to opioid-prescribing clinicians.

A dramatic increase in opioid use over the past several decades has led to an epidemic of addiction and high-severity injuries. This growing tragedy is taking thousands of lives each year and is impacting patients, family members, and clinicians. This latest report focuses on the specific steps that relate to active pain management and associated risks that can contribute to opioid dependence and persistent use.

Key findings and recommendations from the Opioid Red Signal Report include:

  • 51% of events involved a high-severity patient injury and accounted for 85% of indemnity paid.
  • 43% of events had root-cause factors related to medication screening and prescribing.
  • 25% of events had root-cause factors related to monitoring and management.
  • 23% of events had root-cause factors related to dispensing and administering.

Strategies are included in the report, which is available to view on the Coverys website here.

This is the third report in Coverys’ ongoing Red Signal Report series. The series is designed to identify the major risk factors, claims warning signals, and safety vulnerabilities within specific specialties and clinical areas where education and practice change initiatives can improve patient safety, reduce malpractice exposures, and increase reimbursements for providers.

The report is co-authored by Ann Burke, senior director, risk management; Sharon Gilmore, senior risk specialist; Ann Lambrecht, senior risk specialist; Maryann Small, director of data governance & business analytics; and Anthony Zheng, data analyst.

Don’t Tranquilize Pets on the Move Advises Air Animal Veterinarian

Spot moved with his pal Chi Chi from Austin, TX to Pleasanton, CA this fall.

Spot moved with his pal Chi Chi from Austin, TX to Pleasanton, CA this fall.

“Don’t give tranquilizers, CDB or THC products to pets before a move. Many airlines have banned their use. Our pets can’t complain, but they may act frightened or may become aggressive when tranquilized.”–Walter M. Woolf, VMD, Air Animal Founder and Veterinarian

Air Animal advises pet parents not to dose their pets with tranquilizers before a pet move. Tranquilizers affect pets differently than they affect people and the outcome may be unpredictable, says Dr. Walter M. Woolf, Air Animal’s veterinarian owner.

“In pets, tranquilizers dilate the veins and arteries slowing blood flow. They depress breathing. And, they reduce the natural ability to regulate body temperature. All of those responses can cause medical problems during transport. Our pets can’t complain, but they may act frightened or may become aggressive when tranquilized,” he said.

Air Animal recommends asking a veterinarian about a DAP collar for dogs or Feliway cat pheromones. DAP collars and Feliway can help pets in a range of stressful situations: air travel, settling into new homes, fireworks, Christmas, new baby and staying home alone. They may also help prevent or reduce stress-related inappropriate behaviors including excessive barking, destruction/clawing/chewing, house soiling, pacing, trembling, salivating. Re-training may be required to eliminate unwanted behavior. DAP is not usually recommended for hyperactive or aggressive pets.

Thundershirts, another type of calming device, cannot be used on board aircraft. Airlines have prohibited them because they may constrict the pet’s chest and lungs and cause breathing problems during flight.

“We don’t recommend using CDB treats, oils or THC-derivatives either. They can also muddle hearing, vision and balance,” Woolf added.

Moving is stressful enough. Pet moving made easy® is our focus, our passion and our promise.
