KLAS Healthcare AI 2019 Report Identifies Jvion as a Top Performer in Healthcare-focused AI

AI for preventable harm analytics leader Jvion today announced that Jvion was included in the latest KLAS report “Healthcare AI 2019 – Actualizing the Potential of AI”, which provides a “tip of the spear” analysis of the healthcare AI market. As the market leader and the only healthcare-focused AI company with enough clients to complete a full KLAS analysis, Jvion was featured as having “by far the largest client base in the healthcare AI market,” and as having “the largest offering of prebuilt healthcare content for machine learning models/vectors.” Jvion is also proud to share that 95% of its clients said they would buy from Jvion again and that Jvion was part of their long-term plans.

Jvion was identified as the only validated vendor in this space, citing that KLAS was able to interview a larger number of customers, making Jvion the only fully rated vendor meeting the required customer threshold for this report. All other vendors, which included large, global companies, had fewer validated use cases. KLAS validated Jvion for diverse types of clinical and operational use cases, citing that “this puts Jvion at the top of measured vendors in terms of number of validated use cases and number of unique use cases,” and adds that “Jvion’s solution takes results from predictive models and provides prescriptive guidance for how to use that data.” KLAS also reported that 95% of Jvion’s clients responded yes to “would you buy again” and “part of long term plans.”

As summarized in FierceHealthcare, healthcare providers profiled in the report cited early success with clinical outcomes such as reducing readmissions and detecting sepsis risk. One healthcare senior vice president and CMIO said using AI software from Jvion has helped the organization reduce readmissions through the identification of patients more likely to be admitted with an accuracy of 80% to 90%.

As part of the report, Jvion customers also shared:

  • ”Jvion is very focused on the clinical processes of care and making sure that we use AI to inform the clinicians and to augment what they do. That is Jvion’s main goal, and that results in better financial outcomes.”
  • “Jvion is a fantastic partner. I thoroughly enjoy working with them. They are willing to partner and show some of their secret sauce. They want to be with us on every step of the way. They want to be a guide. That is one of the strongest components of our relationship. The vendor is fantastic at helping us be successful.”

Jvion has also been proactively addressing feedback on improvements, highlighted in the reported customer interviews, iteratively introducing them over the past 6 months, including

  • Proactively hiring additional clinical adoption consultants to address the change management and adoption needs specific to AI and healthcare;
  • Refining the ROI reporting through dedicated teams focused on the communication process at three levels- technical, clinical, and executive-level reporting
  • Providing more frequent Jvion user group meetings and training opportunities to leverage AI community learning and best practices.

“As a trailblazer in this complex market, Jvion knows firsthand that being the innovator enables the way to better outcomes, care and support for patients, but it also comes with discovering and tackling things for the very first time,” shared Niki Ozment Buchanan, Jvion’s newly appointed SVP of Customer Success. “Jvion has always looked at these challenges as a privilege and opportunity to learn, adapt and optimize our solutions, approach and support for our customers. This is why I am excited to take customer success to the next level as we continue to partner with providers.”

With over 50% of provider organizations saying they are deployed, implementing or looking to buy a Purpose-built AI vendor solution, based on CHIME’s 2019 HealthCare’s Most Wired Report on AI Adoption based on responses from 483 provider organizations, the Healthcare AI 2019 report from KLAS provides much-needed analysis and guidance to equip providers to adopt AI for patient and provider success.

“The most exciting insight from our research is that artificial intelligence has truly begun to make a difference in healthcare. It’s not all just smoke,” Ryan Pretnik, director of research and strategy at KLAS and co-author of the study, shared with FierceHealthcare. “Artificial intelligence is driving outcomes, saving patient lives, and driving operational and financial efficiencies for providers and payers.”

“This is a great testament to the potential of Jvion’s AI approach for preventing harm while saving costs. It comes from many years of working hand in hand with some very forward-thinking healthcare organizations, helping us gain the experience needed to solve very complex healthcare problems,” adds Shantanu Nigan, co-founder and CEO of Jvion. ”Our client base today represents many of the best hospitals in North America and their continued support of Jvion as we collectively learn how to leverage the power of AI in healthcare is inspiring, driving us to continually strengthen our AI solution.”

The KLAS report was based on interviews with IT leaders at 57 organizations – CIOs, CMIOs, data scientists and more – that are using AI across a variety of different cases, from clinical decision support to patient engagement to revenue cycle management. As part of this process, participants were asked to discuss some tangible gains realized through the technology.

Individual Coverage HRAs promote healthcare choice and competition and make it easier to offer valued benefit

Expanded availability of HRAs promotes healthcare choice and competition

President Trump has promised Americans that he will put them in control of their healthcare, and this expansion of health reimbursement arrangements will help deliver on that promise by providing Americans with more options that better meet their needs.

One of the biggest challenges that small employers face is attracting and retaining employees. Beginning January 1, 2020, employers who have multiple employees can offer an Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangement (ICHRA) to employees to reimburse individual insurance premiums and out-of-pocket medical expenses. These changes will make it easier for employers to provide a valuable benefit. This policy is a result of Executive Order 13813. This order was issued by President Trump in 2017 to expand the availability and use of Health Reimbursement Arrangements (HRAs) and promote healthcare choice and competition.

HRAs are employer-sponsored and -funded health plans used to reimburse employees for medical expenses on a tax-free basis. It’s estimated this expansion of HRAs will benefit approximately 800,000 employers. This number includes small businesses, which comprise more than 11 million employees and family members, including an estimated 800,000 Americans who were previously uninsured.

According to HHS Secretary Alex Azar, “President Trump has promised Americans that he will put them in control of their healthcare, and this expansion of health reimbursement arrangements will help deliver on that promise by providing Americans with more options that better meet their needs.”

Some highlights of the legislation and ICHRA features:

  • Any employer can offer an ICHRA. There are no size restrictions and no minimum participation requirements.
  • Employees can use employer-funded ICHRAs to buy individual insurance coverage, including insurance purchased on the public exchange.
  • Offering an ICHRA counts as an offer of coverage under the employer mandate.
  • Employers who sponsor Group insurance may also offer an ICHRA to employees who have elected not to participate in the Group insurance plan.
  • Multiple classes are allowed. This gives employers flexibility to offer different amounts based on such criteria as full- versus part-time employment, salaried versus hourly employees, geographic location, and more.
  • HRAs are solely funded by an employer; they are employer-sponsored and reimbursed benefits.
  • An employer who sponsors an ICHRA plan will be able to enhance this offering with additional benefits—such as Individual insurance premiums, healthcare FSA, dependent care, and Health Savings Account on a pre-tax basis.
  • HRAs are not pre-funded and must be based on a calendar year.

ICHRAs will allow small employers to overcome many of the limitations of previous HRA offerings as described below:

IRS Notice 2013-54, issued in September 2013, limited the ability of small business owners to utilize stand-alone HRAs. Prior to this guidance, many had used HRAs to reimburse their employees for certain medical expenses using pre-tax dollars. As a result of IRS Notice 2013-54, a company with more than one eligible employee could no longer receive a tax advantage through an HRA unless it sponsored Group insurance (an expense that’s beyond many small companies’ reach) —or offered a Limited Purpose HRA (which can only provide coverage for dental, orthodontia, vision and long-term care).

In 2016, the Cures Act established the Qualified Small Employer HRA (QSEHRA). This legislation overturned guidance issued in IRS Notice 2013-54 and once again allowed employers with fewer than 50 employees (companies not subject to the ACA’s Employer Mandate) to utilize HRAs as a pre-tax health and welfare benefit. The QSEHRA has many restrictions and requirements that the ICHRA does not. For example, a QSEHRA is only available to employers with fewer than 50 eligible employees and employer contributions are capped.

Garavel Subaru of Norwalk has once again chosen Mikey’s Way Foundation to be the hometown charity recipient for their annual Share the Love Event. From November 15, 2019 to January 2, 2020, Subaru of America will donate $250 for every new Subaru vehicle purchased or leased at Garavel Subaru in Norwalk. Since 2014, Garavel’s Share The Love Event has raised close to $200,000 for Mikey’s Way Foundation. That translates into more than 1,000 brand new electronic gifts such as laptop computers and tablets for pediatric cancer patients in treatment. In addition, Mikey’s Way was able to outfit each in-patient pediatric hematology/oncology room at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital with an iPad for use during prolonged stays.

“We believe people will be remembered for what they do in the community, not for their individual accomplishments,” says Paul Garavel, President and owner of Garavel Subaru. “We are delighted to be partnering with Mikey’s Way once again this year, working to ease the strain of long-term treatment for pediatric cancer patients and their families.”

“We are honored and humbled to be chosen once again this year as the hometown charity for Garavel Subaru’s Share the Love event,” says Les Friedman, CEO of Mikey’s Way Foundation. “The Subaru organization, and Garavel Subaru in particular, genuinely cares about the people in need in our community. They’ve taken their philosophy of giving and put it into action to help the most vulnerable among us – and we are so grateful.”

Opioid-dependent baby suits go forward with amended suits linking in-utero drug exposure to birth defects according to Opioid Justice Team experts

Four of the 34 statewide class actions pending before Judge Dan Polster’s Multi-District Litigation have been amended with evidence pleading the causal connection between in-utero prescription opioid use and birth defects in exposed fetuses, said Lead Counsel Scott Bickford.

“For the first time, the dirty secret regarding prescription opioids prescribed to women of child-bearing age is revealed,” said Legal Strategist Stuart Smith. “Our research shows that though the federal agencies documented the link between in-utero exposure to prescription opioids and birth defects, a timely black box warning on opioid prescriptions given to women by their doctors and gynecologists could have and should have been made before 2014, when the first warning in opioid labeling was made.”

These cases now present a legal model for replication in all cases, Mr. Bickford said. The suits were filed seeking to protect the rights of babies born opioid-dependent and their guardians because these children will face life-time medical needs related to educational, physical, and developmental disabilities.

“The responsible parties who should have warned prescribers of opioids to women of childbearing age, never undertook a Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) similar to other proven teratogens,” said Mr. Bickford. “These cases are an important public warning to women and their babies because they were left unprotected during decades of widespread distribution, marketing and medical use of these drugs.”

The four amended cases in West Virginia, California, Tennessee and Ohio document the birth defects and complications children born before 2014 to mothers using prescription opioids are now facing, along with the scientific links alleging the mechanism of action by which this class of prescription opioid drugs caused these debilitating injuries.

The amended briefs include research conducted by Toxicological Pathologist Dr. Vyvyan Howard of Ulster University and Neo-Natal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) Expert Dr. Kanwaljeet Anand of Stanford University. The teratogenic effects of opioids on a developing fetus range from physical deformities such as heart, brain and gastroenterological defects, including mal-formed heads, cleft palates or lack of complete bowel systems, as well as neurological, motor and cognitive defects such as inability to walk, talk or complete basic skills.

“The hard work of these independent researchers has uncovered the sorry details of this public health crisis, but we remain concerned that these facts will get lost in the fights over bankruptcies and counter lawsuits,” said Mr. Bickford. “This information must get out to every doctor and pharmacy, and a REMS program instituted to protect every woman of child-bearing age who might be prescribed these risky drugs.

Hundreds of thousands of Opioid Dependent Children have been born in the last 20 years. These children face educational and developmental hurdles, and many may face future addiction since they were born addicted. We continue to push aggressively in the federal court system and before Judge Polster presiding over the Multi-District Litigation for a specific NAS track because of the severe and enduring impact this epidemic has and will have on our nation’s children.

Table 1 shows the association between maternal opioid analgesic treatment and specific major birth defects in National Birth Defects Prevention Study of 17449 cases and 6701 controls. Significance is starred * in the usual way. Odds ratios were adjusted for maternal age, race/ethnicity, education, pre-pregnancy obesity, smoking.

“The lawsuits seek creation of a medical monitoring trust fund for these children funded by the prescription drug defendants directly, rather than relying on local governments with competing priorities,” Mr. Bickford said, illustrating the gravity of the situation by estimating that an opioid-dependent child is being born every 15 minutes in the United States.

Statistics compiled by the Centers for Disease Control estimate that first-year Medicaid costs for opioid-exposed infants average approximately $238,000 and the additional cost burden on hospital Neo-natal Intensive Care Units has increased five-fold in less than a decade.

“These estimates do not cover costs borne by family caregivers or foster-care institutions responsible for the infants once released from the hospital. The guardians and parents who take these infants home frequently believe that once the child is weaned from their opioid-dependency, there will be no long-term impact on the child. Data shows that is unfortunately almost never the case,” said Mr. Bickford.

The 34 states represented in the NAS legal filings are:

Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin.

ClearHealth Quality Institute Launches Accreditation for Telemedicine Outcomes Programs

News Image

“The CHQI Telemedicine Outcomes Workgroup has developed comprehensive standards that allow organizations to demonstrate the value of telemedicine through their outcomes measurement programs,” said Jason Goldwater, MPA, MA, PMP, Senior Principal, Atlas Research, & Chair, CHQI Outcomes Workgroup.

ClearHealth Quality Institute (CHQI), an independent health care accrediting body, announced today the launch of a new addition to its Telemedicine Accreditation Program – the Telemedicine Outcomes Supplement.

CHQI’s Telemedicine Accreditation Program is the country’s largest telemedicine accreditation program and the only accreditation program recognized by the American Telemedicine Association (ATA).

The new Telemedicine Outcomes Supplement provides the first opportunity for a telemedicine program to have an accreditation agency validate the strength of its outcomes measurement program. The Supplement’s standards provide best practices for building, implementing and maintaining a telemedicine outcomes program and then utilizes those standards to accredit telemedicine programs that meet the requirements.

The Telemedicine Outcomes Supplement requires applicants to demonstrate evidence of implementing and utilizing a quality assurance program to track performance through a complete measurement cycle. Five categories must be covered: 1) access to care; 2) clinical effectiveness; 3) clinical experience/ satisfaction; 4) financial impact; and 5) operations.

“Although telemedicine is widely recognized for promoting efficiency, increased access, and patient satisfaction, some skepticism still remains about its ability to produce clinical and financial outcomes equal to, or better than, face-to-face encounters,” said Jason Goldwater, MPA, MA, PMP, Senior Principal, Atlas Research, & Chair, CHQI Telemedicine Outcomes Workgroup. “The CHQI Telemedicine Outcomes Workgroup has developed a comprehensive set of standards that allow organizations to clearly demonstrate the value of telemedicine through their outcomes measurement programs.”

“The CHQI Telemedicine Outcomes Supplement encourages telemedicine programs to elevate, validate and display their commitment to the measurement, analysis and reporting of patient outcomes,” said Michael Gomes, Chief Executive Officer, ClearHealth Quality Institute. “The standards shift from a focus on process and structure to a focus on actual performance measures. The information gleaned from these measures will create actionable information that can be utilized to make real and substantial program improvements.”
