Healthcare Linen Alliance Announces Significant Growth and Expansion

News Image

“We are always looking for the right opportunities to expand strategically and we believe that our ability to scale quickly and assist businesses in our community was a win for all involved.”

The Healthcare Linen Alliance announced today its expanded service areas driven by members adding new facilities. With Alliance members serving the United States and Canada, the group now collectively produces over 750,000,000 pounds annually, serving more than 2,100 customers and over 120,000 hospital beds.

Century Linen & Uniform Service recently built and opened a state of the art facility in Johnstown, New York, and took over the closed Clarus Plants in Syracuse, New York. In part, the expansion was born out of demand for a rapid onboarding of new customers made necessary by other linen providers exiting the market. In less than a month, Century brought on new customers representing more than 15 million pounds of volume annually. Several of those new customers required processing millions of pounds of linen due to existing providers going out of business suddenly. Within seven days, Century surveyed and assessed all of the locations of the potential new customers, ordered, prepped and processed linen to facilitate installation and seamless operations.

“We have an agile and professional, customer-centric team capable of decisive action and we were pleased that we could lend a helping hand to businesses in need” said Richard Smith, CEO of Century in New York. “We are always looking for the right opportunities to expand strategically and we believe that our ability to scale quickly and assist businesses in our community was a win for everyone involved.”

Novo Health Services, an HLA Member headquartered in Georgia, added an eight million pound customer in Richmond, Virginia, with just 30 days notice. Quickly gathering a large install team and partnering another Alliance member, Up To Date Laundry Inc., they surveyed, prepped and processed linen, providing a seamless install and uninterrupted operations for the healthcare system customer.

In the Midwest, a hospital in Peoria, Illinois, was given short notice that their provider was discontinuing service. With a two week time frame, Alliance Member Midwest Healthcare Linen Service stepped in to survey, prep, install and begin servicing the facility quickly to ensure ongoing service.

Encompassing facilities up and down the West Coast, HLA Member Emerald Textiles has experienced rapid growth and added significant capacity through opening new facilities, upgrading plants and a strategic acquisition plan. Recent Emerald acquisitions include a plant in St. George, Utah, as well as Mediclean Linen and Laundry in Los Angeles. The company also invested heavily in upgrading existing facilities in Los Angeles, and Turlock, California, in the third quarter of the year and recently completed its “greenfield” expansion in Livingston, CA, which opened this fall. Emerald’s focus on outstanding quality and service to its customers has facilitated explosive growth in its service area along the West Coast as well as adjacent states.

As demonstrated by these recent events, Healthcare Linen Alliance members are unrelenting in responding to the needs of existing and prospective customers alike. Committed to the industries they serve, members of the Alliance are aggressively scaling their businesses and seeking new opportunities across the nation.

Fueled by rapid and significant growth, the Healthcare Linen Alliance is one of the largest commercial healthcare linen service providers in the nation serving more than 120,000 hospital beds daily and over 2,100 customers. The group includes Century Linen & Uniform, EcoTex Healthcare Linen Service, Emerald Textiles, Logan’s Healthcare Linen Systems, Midwest Healthcare Linen Service, Novo Health Services, Paris Healthcare Linen Services, Superior Health Linens, Textile Care Services and Up to Date Laundry. The group serves a large area covering California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Northern Virginia, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington D.C., Washington State, West Virginia and Wisconsin, as well as Canada.

Omega Announces Annual Nonprofit Retreat Grant Opportunity Aimed at Strengthening Social Impact

Nonprofits face immense challenges, from scarce resources, to regulations, to staffing. Typically the first thing to go, when trying to meet daily pressures, is dedicated time for planning.

Omega Institute, a nonprofit educational organization, today announced it is accepting applications from fellow nonprofits for its 16th annual Strengthening Communities Summit. The summit is part of a long-standing program, Nonprofit Retreats at Omega, which awards working retreat grants to organizations addressing social, economic, environmental, and cultural challenges in the Hudson Valley, and beyond. The application deadline for 2020 grants is January 27th.

“Nonprofits face immense challenges, from scarce resources, to regulations, to staffing. Typically the first thing to go, when trying to meet daily pressures, is dedicated time for planning,” said Carla Goldstein, president of Omega. “We are proud to be able to give back to our extended community by supporting the work of our nonprofit peers, many of whom provide a safety-net to the most vulnerable people among us.”

Omega partners with the New York Council of Nonprofits (NYCON) on this program, which since 2005 has served more than 5,000 people from close to 350 organizations. Grant recipients come for 3-day/2-night, self-led, working retreats and receive access to all amenities on Omega’s 250-acre Hudson Valley campus. Funding includes simple accommodations, meals, and a private meeting space. Past recipients have used their time at Omega in many ways, from strategic planning and cultivating leadership, to reflection, team-building, and problem solving.

While at Omega, organizations also participate in the Nonprofit Clinic, a free one-hour consultation with NYCON for support in any aspect of nonprofit health—from financial management to resource development, strategic planning, and board and leadership development. Additionally, summit participants can contract with NYCON for more robust retreat planning services and facilitation assistance.

Danielle Weisberg, director of child welfare services at Westchester Institute for Human Development, attests to the value of her agency participating in the summit program. “You really won’t find another experience like this. Between the bucolic setting, the warmth of the staff, and the indescribable energy that surrounds you, Omega is an ideal setting for nonprofits to step away from their daily responsibilities and transform a part of their organization and culture.”

Huguette Clark Foundation Awards Grant to the Family & Children’s Association of Long Island

“The SOS program has had a significant impact in its first year, and we are pleased to support its innovative approach, which we hope can serve as a model for other communities.”

The Huguette Clark Foundation announced today that it has awarded a $32,000 grant to the Family and Children’s Association (FCA) to support its Strong Observant Seniors (SOS) program, an innovative and proven project that is addressing the problem of elder exploitation in Nassau County.

The SOS program is a unique public-private partnership that brings together law enforcement personnel and case management specialists to help elderly victims of exploitation with counseling and restitution, while prosecuting those responsible.

In its pilot phase in 2018, the SOS program showed measurable and meaningful success, educating more than 800 care providers, law enforcement personnel and seniors about elder exploitation and providing direct assistance to more than 80 seniors who were victimized. In addition, the program identified 10 prosecutable cases of elder abuse. The grant from the Huguette Clark Foundation will enable the SOS program to build on this success and strengthen and expand its services.

Ian Clark Devine, president of the Huguette Clark Foundation, said: “From its inception, the Huguette Clark Foundation has supported advocacy, training and education programs to combat elder abuse, as well as efforts aimed at strengthening the civil and criminal justice processes to hold perpetrators responsible. The SOS program combines all these elements and has had a significant impact in its first year. We are pleased to support its innovative approach, which we hope can serve as a model for other communities.”

Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds, President and CEO of FCA, said: “We are grateful for the support of the Huguette Clark Foundation, which has developed a reputation for funding innovative programs to address elder abuse, using relatively small, targeted grants to achieve outsized results. We look forward to working with them as the SOS program continues its growth.”

Lisa Stern, Assistant Vice President for Senior and Adult Services at FCA, said: “From our many years of experience, we have learned that elderly victims have a long journey to recovery. Ending the abuse and pursuing criminal prosecutions is only the beginning. The SOS program was designed to give counseling, support and guidance to seniors who have suffered abuse, and it made a strong impact in its first year. With this new funding, we can continue to work with our partners in law enforcement social services to serve vulnerable seniors in our community.”

The elderly and disabled are significantly at risk for a range of crimes. On Long Island, the self-reported rates for financial abuse were 44.9 per 1000 and 38 per 1000 for non-financial abuse, according to a study on elder abuse prevalence in New York State. Financial exploitation was the type of exploitation most commonly reported by respondents, and nearly half of the abusers were the victims’ adult children.

About the Huguette Clark Foundation

The Huguette Clark Foundation for Protection of Elders was created by members of the Clark family to honor their late aunt, Huguette Clark, who was victimized by her caregivers and advisors for more than two decades. The Foundation (huguetteclarkfoundation.org) supports innovative organizations and programs to fight the financial abuse of elders, addressing needs often overlooked by traditional programs. The Foundation’s strategy is to make targeted early-stage grants to develop programs that later can be scaled or replicated for broad impact. Grants are related to the abuse that Huguette Clark herself suffered, specifically the prevention of undue influence, manipulation and financial exploitation by institutions and professionals.

The Huguette Clark Foundation, a tax-exempt public charity, has awarded grants since 2013 to support innovative education and advocacy programs to combat elder exploitation. Earlier grants provided financial support for programs to train Adult Protective Service workers; help banks implement federal guidelines for sharing customer information with investigatory agencies in cases of suspected elder financial exploitation; and develop model civil statutes to help victims of financial exploitation seek justice, recover assets and rebuild their lives.

AppRev Announces Pricing Transparency Solution for Hospitals

AppRev Logo

AppRev’s Pricing Transparency solution simplifies the complex, time-consuming process with a turnkey solution that accommodates individual hospitals’ differentiated strategies.

AppRev, An OSG Company, announced today the introduction of the Pricing Transparency Solution. The cloud-based solution enables hospitals to comply with new pricing transparency rules recently disclosed by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid, which are set to take effect January 1, 2021.

On November 15th, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services announced the soon-to-be-published “Medicare and Medicaid Programs: CY 2020 Hospital Outpatient PPS Policy Changes and Payment Rates and Ambulatory Surgical Center Payment System Policy Changes and Payment Rates. Price Transparency Requirements for Hospitals to Make Standard Charges Public.” With these new rules hospitals will be required to do the following:

Publish a “comprehensive machine-readable file that contains all standard charges for all items and services provided by the hospital” including the following:

  • Description of each item or service
  • Gross charge, by place of service, if applicable
  • Payer-specific negotiated rate with identification of the payer
  • De-identified minimum negotiated rate
  • De-identified maximum negotiated rate
  • Discounted cash price that applies to each item or service
  • The identified billing code such as HCPCS, NDC or DRG, as applicable

Although DRGs (MS and APR) are not typically listed as standard charges in hospitals, the ruling will require that their rates be included in the published file. AppRev is recommending that customers publish the average charge for each DRG in order to accommodate for the large variance among discharges.

AppRev’s Pricing Transparency solution simplifies the complex, time-consuming process with a turnkey solution that accommodates individual hospitals’ differentiated strategies.

As a leading partner in the revenue cycle landscape, AppRev is uniquely connected to the pulse of the industry. In preparation for this new ruling, AppRev offers providers a clear and efficient means to meeting the new requirements, laying the groundwork for providing accurate and compliant pricing transparency.

“AppRev has been working with hospitals for more than 15 years. Helping them present charge information to the public in a meaningful way is a natural progression in our relationship with our customers,” said Seth Avery, President and CEO of AppRev. “We’re here to assist our customers in navigating the ever-changing hospital pricing transparency landscape.”

The latest Pricing Transparency solution aligns closely with AppRev’s existing suite of offerings, keeping hospitals on the forefront of technology-enabled revenue cycle optimization.

New Consortium Launched in Partnership with CISCRP to Improve National Clinical Research Literacy

To address the critical need to improve patient diversity in clinical trials, CISCRP–in partnership with ten leading pharmaceutical companies and clinical research providers–has launched a new consortium that will focus on community-based education beginning in early 2020.

Research in the literature shows that minority communities have a high willingness to participate in clinical trials and high self-reported general knowledge about the clinical research process. Yet, according to a recent study conducted by the Center for the Study of Drug Development at the Tufts University School of Medicine, minority patients – most notably those of Black and African descent – are highly underrepresented in clinical trials of new medical interventions. Tufts research also shows that patient referral rates into clinical trials among practicing minority physicians and nurses are very low.

To address the critical need to improve patient diversity in clinical trials, CISCRP – in partnership with ten leading pharmaceutical companies and clinical research service providers – has launched a new consortium that will focus energy and resources on community-based education during the next five years beginning in early 2020. Consortium members include Merck, IQVIA, Biogen, Otsuka, CSL Behring, Janssen, WCG, Boston Scientific, EMD Serono, and Pfizer. Representatives from each member company will participate on a steering committee and will provide staff and resources to support the planning and execution of live educational events in five targeted urban centers annually.

“This centralized approach is vital to bring together the necessary oversight and infrastructure required to engage with communities from around the country,” said Jonathan Jackson, Ph.D., study volunteer and The Center Director of Community Access, Recruitment, and Engagement (CARE) Research Center at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School.

The Consortium initiative builds on CISCRP’s 18-year experience producing and hosting internationally recognized live educational events – called AWARE-for-ALL programs — throughout the United States and parts of Europe. Each event engages a local planning committee comprised of members of the public, patients, advocacy groups, health care and clinical research professionals, offers educational presentations and discussions, as well as free health screenings and information about local clinical trial activity. The consortium also plans to mobilize a pop-up educational exhibit in targeted urban health centers to generate excitement and awareness in the weeks leading up to each live event.

“We are thrilled to be working with Consortium members on this important and novel initiative,” said Ellyn Getz, Associate Director of Development & Community Engagement at CISCRP. “Support, input and insight from consortium members presents an unprecedented opportunity to have an even greater impact on advancing public and patient clinical research literacy over a 5-year time period with ongoing continuous improvement,” she added.

ABOUT CISCRP:
