Art Competition and Early Registration

“Imagine Me Beyond What You See,” the unique art competition sponsored annually by the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals (iaedp™), offers artists are given the opportunity of self-expression by pushing the boundaries of form, structure and identity through visual, 3-dimensional and mixed media as well as poetry, spoken word and dance/performance.

For the 2020 iaedp™ Symposium, art competition entries are still being accepted through December 15, 2019.

“Imagine Me Beyond What You See” was first designed to promote a healthy awareness and acceptance of body images and that focus has been nurtured over its 10-year history. Traditionally, the art contest is open to everyone; however, iaedp™ asks eating disorders treatment centers and private practices with art therapists to work with patients to provide entries.

“Each art entry is as unique as the artists themselves,” says Blanche Williams, MS and Director of International Development at the iaedp™ Foundation. Entries must include a 300-word description/inspiration along with a two to three sentence biography of the artist or group. A list of materials/content must be provided along with a submission of four photos of the art form in high (300+) resolution jpeg format that shows at least four different angles. Photos will be enlarged, so quality is important. Poetry and/or spoken word should be submitted in writing and/or one to two minute You Tube video link. Dance/performance must be submitted in one to two minute You Tube video link. All entries require signing an artist release.

The “Imagine Me Beyond What You See” awards ceremony is scheduled during the 2020 iaedp™ Symposium and includes the Professionals’ Choice Award, which is selected through voting by iaedp™ membership, 2020 Symposium attendees and the general public.

Past year Imagine Me contest entries and winners can be seen by visiting: http://www.iaedp.com/imagine-me/ and http://membershare.iaedp.com/category/members/memberimagineme/ For additional information about the Imagine Me art competition, including how to enter, contact Blanche@iaedp.com.

Another December deadline for the 2020 iaedp™ Symposium is early registration, which is open prior to December 21, 2019. Registration discounts include: for iaedp™ certified members, $650; for members, $700; for non-iaedp™ members, $775; for full-time students, $400; for retired registrants, $400; and for international registrants, $400. Discount rates for groups and one-day registrations also are available. Beginning December 22, 2019, all costs increase by $50.

About the iaedp™ Foundation: Since 1985, the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals has provided education and training standards to an international and multidisciplinary group of various healthcare treatment providers and helping professions. Improved Pharma continues to advance the science of understanding the structure of amorphous dispersions

Improved Pharma’s analytical methods provide a new and improved strategy to further enhance dissolution and stabilize amorphous materials. Additionally, their PDF Synchrotron methods provide a way to determine the structure of these new materials and enhance the ability to describe these compositions both in regulatory and patent applications.

The latest developments were recently shared at the AAPS PharmSci 360 meeting in San Antonio, TX from Nov 3-6, 2019. The highly successful meeting allowed for several discussions surrounding the Improved Pharma problem solving strategy.  The conference booth was ideally located among several formulation companies and the formulation poster sessions, enabling a great forum for gathering scientists with similar interests. Improved Pharma was able to meet with a wide range of scientists who were extremely interested in the use of Synchrotron methods to solve problems.  Additionally, Improved Pharma, via its COO Pam Smith, presented a poster on Synchrotron analysis of lapatinib dispersions and a “rapid fire” presentation on Improved Pharma’s capabilities including problem solving, formulation design, and analytical methods development.

Rosalynn Carter Institute to Host Free Dealing with Dementia Workshop

America, Atlanta, Americus and all over are at a crisis point when it comes to taking care of a loved one with dementia. Almost 7 million people in America have dementia and many families cannot afford the $7 to $15,000 a month for care in an assisted living facility, nor can they afford to pay hourly caretakers. Many families (mostly women) must end their careers to take care of aging and affected parents.

The Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving (RCI) has created a free workshop that will teach caregivers how to care for their loved ones and themselves. The workshop will be held in Americus, Ga., on Dec. 4, 2019 and additional workshops will take place throughout the rest of the country in 2020.

To paraphrase Mrs. Carter, all of us will either give it or receive care in our lifetime. Below is more information about the workshop.

WHAT: The four-hour workshop provides caregivers with basic information on dementia; insights into the caregiving journey; how to develop a dementia-friendly environment; dementia behavior management; caregiver self-care; and how to select the best services and resources. Each participant will receive a book that helps them continue their education and implement best-practices following the workshop.

WHEN: Wednesday, Dec. 4 from 1 to 5 p.m.

WHERE: RCI office at 800 Georgia Southwestern State University Drive, Americus, GA 31709

WHY: All family and professional caregivers are welcome to attend this free four-hour workshop. All attendees will receive a free Dealing with Dementia Guide and a better understanding on what dementia is, how to handle stress, finding time for themselves, and techniques on managing problem behaviors.

About the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving

Located in Americus, Ga., the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving is a division of Georgia Southwestern State University. The RCI was established in 1987 in honor of former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, a GSW alumna who serves as president of the Institute’s Board of Advisors. RCI establishes local, state, national, and international partnerships committed to building quality, long-term, home and community-based services. It advocates for evidence-based research to address the strain and burdens associated with family, volunteer, and professional caregiving.

Dental Implants and Deep Cleanings for Gum Disease can Protect Restore Most Smiles for Older and Younger Patients, says Beverly Hills Periodontics & Dental Implant Center

A well-equipped periodontist or implant specialist can usually restore compromised smiles, says Beverly Hills Periodontics & Dental Implant Center.

People of any age who nevertheless find themselves with gum disease or compromised teeth should know that these conditions are highly treatable and that the cost of neglecting them can be very high.

A November 10 article on News Medical explains that, as people age, they become more susceptible to a variety of conditions based in the teeth and gums. The article explains that gum diseases, as well as cavities, are more prevalent in the older population. The article also explains that, as is commonly known, the risk of oral health problems can be reduced considerably with good oral habits and care. Beverly Hills Periodontics & Dental Implant Center says that general preventive care is essential but people of any age who nevertheless find themselves with gum disease or compromised teeth should know that these conditions are highly treatable and that the cost of neglecting them can be very high.

The West Los Angeles area dental center says that there are many effective treatments for moderate to severe periodontal disease that can forestall far more serious problems in the future. In most cases, a periodontist will start with nonsurgical options like scaling and root planing. The center adds that this practice is essentially a thorough cleaning – commonly referred to as a deep cleaning – of the patient’s mouth and generally requires only local anesthesia. The roots of the patient’s teeth are also made smooth to make it harder for plaque to attach to teeth in this therapy. After a waiting period of a little less than a month, the clinic adds, patients typically return for a reevaluation to determine if any further treatments are necessary.

Patients who have already suffered tooth loss or who may be preparing to have a tooth extracted, whether due to periodontitis, trauma, or other causes, should know that effective treatments exist, adds Beverly Hills Periodontics & Dental Implant Center. The office notes that tooth loss can be an embarrassing and frustrating ordeal – but that’s not necessarily the worst of it. Tooth loss can also be dangerous, as a lack of stimulation on the underlying bone structure can lead to bone loss and jaw malformation over the long term. Over time, this can lead to the loss of more teeth and also may make the patient more susceptible to systemic health issues. The clinic says dental implants are the gold standard solution for missing teeth and are suitable for most patients. The implant center also notes that the bone structure in some patients may require some degree of augmentation prior to the installation of an implant. However, the benefits of implants in terms of convenience, appearance, as well as oral health typically delight patients once their treatments are completed.

Philanthropic Giving Among UHNW Individuals Exceeds $150 billion

Today, Wealth-X released a new report uncovering unique information about how and where ultra high net worth (UHNW) individuals (those with a net worth of at least $30 million) choose to give. The New Normal: Trends in UHNW Giving 2019 is the fourth edition of Wealth-X’s report focused on philanthropic giving by the world’s wealthiest individuals.

As the global UHNW population has grown, so too has an increasing expectation that philanthropy should be a shared passion among wealthy individuals. The report estimates that in the U.S. alone, the ultra wealthy population accounts for between 20 and 30% of all individual giving, underscoring the great potential for non-profit organizations to meet fundraising goals by engaging a relatively a small group of major donors.

Among numerous key findings, The New Normal: Trends in UHNW Giving 2019 reveals:

  • The ultra wealthy gave a total of $153 billion towards philanthropic endeavors in 2018 – roughly equivalent to all U.S. federal government spending on healthcare, education and energy expected for this year.
  • At $75 billion, North America accounted for nearly half of all philanthropic gifts made by UHNW individuals, globally.
  • Nearly 9 in every 10 UHNW individuals direct part of their philanthropic efforts to education, making it the leading cause of giving among ultra wealthy donors (those UHNW individuals who have donated a minimum of $50,000 over the last 5 years).
  • Younger ultra wealthy donors take a more targeted approach to giving, with those under the age of 45 tending to be more passionate about one or two causes that they are both financially and practically involved with.

The manner in which the ultra wealthy engage with philanthropic causes is constantly evolving. In addition to providing unique insight into the global landscape of ultra wealthy donors, Wealth-X examines how the changing profile of philanthropists and more innovative forms of giving are creating new investment objectives, new financial products and new ways for the ultra wealthy to collaborate with not-for-profit organizations and the education sector.

Motivo Raises $2.2M Seed Round to Launch First Tele-supervision Marketplace

online supervision therapist counselor Motivo

Motivo is the first HIPAA-compliant platform providing online clinical supervision for mental health therapists’ licensure.

As stigma related to mental health lessens, more and more people are choosing to pursue a career as a mental health professional. The supervision process is the last mile of obtaining a credential as a therapist. At Motivo, we aim to make supervision easier and more accessible than ever before.

Motivo, the first platform for therapist tele-supervision, announced today the company has raised $2.2 million of seed financing in an investment round led by Cox Enterprises. Participation from venture capital firms includes Techstars, SEI Ventures, ECMC, Great Oaks VC, The Jump Fund, Emmett Partners, and Next Wave Impact Fund, along with multiple angel investors.

A first mover in this space, Motivo connects recent graduates to a clinical supervisor to fulfill state licensure requirements as a therapist, counselor, social worker or psychologist. Similar to residency for a doctor, aspiring mental health professionals are required to complete approximately two years of face-to-face consultation with a licensed therapist following graduate school. This process is called clinical supervision. Historically, these hours had to be completed in person, however, with the rise of telehealth, many states now allow supervision hours to be collected through secure video conference.

“Obtaining these hours is more difficult than one might think,” said CEO and founder, Rachel McCrickard. “For a therapist, getting your degree is actually the easy part. It’s becoming licensed that is hard.”

On her own journey to become a licensed therapist, McCrickard withstood a weekly two-hour commute to complete her supervision hours over the course of two years. That experience gave her a front seat view into the geographic boundaries that preclude mental health professionals from serving rural areas. When the rules began to change to allow tele-supervision, she was galvanized to take action.

McCrickard said, “As stigma related to mental health lessens, more and more people are choosing to pursue a career as a mental health professional. The supervision process is the last mile of obtaining a credential as a therapist. At Motivo, we aim to make supervision easier and more accessible than ever before.”

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), 55% of U.S. counties—all rural—have no practicing mental health professionals. By providing an accessible path to licensure for incoming therapists, Motivo has a direct impact on increasing the mental health provider population in traditionally underserved communities.

After graduating from the 2018 Techstars Atlanta accelerator program, Motivo added Tim Howe, Senior Director of Corporate Strategy & Investments at Cox Enterprises to its board of directors.

“Over the past few years, Cox Enterprises has developed a strong interest in digital health, particularly in the innovative use of software platforms to provide more accessible healthcare solutions,” Howe said. “We see Motivo as perfectly positioned to capture the therapist credentialing market, and to identify lateral healthcare markets that would also benefit from tele-supervision and the Motivo marketplace. We are proud to lead Motivo’s round and utilize our resources and connections to help Motivo scale.”

Motivo will use its seed funding to grow the team, acquire contracts with mental health agencies and clinics, and sign channel partnerships with therapist associations and universities. Thus far, Motivo has identified 12 credential types in the healthcare industry that require supervised hours, representing a $6.5 billion dollar market opportunity.

Since founding Motivo in 2017, the company has witnessed exciting growth as a two-sided marketplace. New graduates and mental health clinics are able to select from a robust list of state-approved supervisors for tele-supervision. For supervisors, Motivo provides a back-end solution for managing one’s online supervision practice. The company recently signed a partnership with the AAMFT, the largest association for marriage and family therapists, after also signing the American Counseling Association earlier this year.

Motivo advisor, Mark Goldenson, former CEO and founder of Breakthrough Behavioral, a telemental health platform acquired by MDLIVE in 2014, said, “It’s pretty uncommon in 2019 to find a market that is large, untapped, pursuable without hard tech, and highly defensible. Motivo found one.”

About Motivo

Motivo is the largest platform for therapist tele-supervision connecting pre-licensed therapists with clinical supervisors through secure video conference. Motivo helps aspiring therapists get the supervision required to earn their license, grow their skills, and launch their careers. For more information, visit Motivo’s website.

Life Science Logistics Begins Construction on Second Indianapolis-Area Facility, Doubles Cold Chain Storage to Meet Demand

Life Science Logistics’ Cold Chain Storage Facility to be Expanded

“We only see the demand for cold chain storage continuing to grow, and are excited to be part of it,” says Life Science Logistics CEO Richard Beeny.

As the pharmaceutical and medical device market continues to demand greater FDA-regulated, temperature-controlled storage and distribution, Life Science Logistics (LSL), a leading, national provider of healthcare supply chain solutions, today announced it has begun construction on a 280,000 sq. ft. facility – the company’s second in the Indianapolis area.

The new storage and distribution location in Whitestown will create 50 new logistics and operations jobs, and will allow LSL to double its cold chain storage at the company’s existing, Brownsburg-based distribution warehouse.

“The advances in medical treatments for oncology, diabetes, cell and gene therapies and so many other diagnoses require FDA-regulated products, that increasingly require, cold chain storage,” says LSL CEO Richard Beeny. “We only see that demand continuing to grow, and are excited to be part of it.”

When combined with the existing 526,200 sq. ft. at the Brownsburg facility, the Whitestown facility brings LSL’s total combined Indianapolis footprint to 806,200 sq. ft. of mixed-use, FDA-regulated storage and distribution space. Like the Brownsburg location, Whitestown will feature best-in-class technology and automation to ensure world-class performance.

“Market expectations only project increased need for this kind of specialty storage and distribution,” adds Beeny, “we will continue to expand our footprint to meet that need.”
