History Making Denver District Attorney Beth McCann Inspires History once Again, As True Inspiration Behind Suicidal Inmates Mental Health Initiative.

Dr. Ezzat Moghazy, Beth McCann and Marchell Taylor Sr.

A simple visit to any legal library in a Colorado Department of Corrections Facility and you will discover a letter of support from McCann to other inmates.

As Denver District Attorney Beth McCann is running again for chief law enforcement officer, AYBOS Marketing LLC continues to follow her story. In the 2016 Denver Post, McCann ran for office on the premise that she would “Discontinue using jails as tools to warehouse inmates or individuals with mental health disorders.” She continues to stick to her word in 2020. Inspired by the 2016 Post article, AYBOS Marketing Director Marchell Taylor, facing a life sentence in the same, reached out to Beth McCann and she reached back. He immediately contacted his business partner C. A. Shively from the county jail and said, “AYBOS must support this district attorneys’ efforts.” After reading the article himself, Shively agreed.

McCann is keeping her campaign promise in 2020 by supporting inmates like Taylor while in treatment or seeking help. McCann and Taylor corresponded back and forth through letters while in the Men’s Mental Health Transition Unit in the Denver County Jail. Taylor noticed for the first time in his 21-year criminal history, a district attorney who cared about his own mental health issues. The mental health disorders that went largely unidentified and un-diagnosed until McCann came into office, Taylor says changed his life forever. Taylor attributes McCann for saving his life, while McCann says the she “Simply supported him in his process.”

McCann began to inspire the Rebuild Your Mind Mental Health Challenge from behind the scenes. After noticing that Taylor was serious about de-stigmatizing these issues, she reached out to the then President/CEO of Mental Health Colorado, and now US Senate candidate, Andrew Romanoff and connected him to the mental health challenge. McCann’s inspiration led Romanoff into accepting a meeting with the Rebuild Your Mind Communication Director Roberta Derek. Coincidentally, Derek had already filmed her own challenge video, in which she challenged McCann, Romanoff and 9 News Anchor Kyle Clark. See Mrs. Derek’s challenge video here: https://youtu.be/yWFWUXm71zA

Derek first met with McCann on behalf of Rebuild Your Mind and then with Romanoff to establish the specifics of a full interview with the AYBOS Video Team. AYBOS Video Team, C. A. Shively and CU intern Rosalinda Ortega, then captured the interview with Romanoff, Taylor and Rebuild Your Mind Assistant Director Dr. Ezzat Moghazy. Romanoff not only accepted his challenge, but he talked about his own struggle with losing his first cousin (whom Romanoff says she was a sister to him) to suicide on New Year’s Day.

Romanoff then goes on to challenge Governor Jarod Polis and Cynthia Coffman (in last 3 minutes of video interview), in hopes they would accept their challenge. While the challenge has a three challenge limit, according to the challenge guide lines (see challenge instruction video here featuring Ortega where she inspires “There’s no greater time for this type of movement than now”: https://youtu.be/NMrjX6dvo3U), Romanoff surprises everyone with his third challenge; see video Link here: https://youtu.be/RgLb_wTFlIo

McCann is no stranger to mental health issues in her city. She has fashioned juvenile justice reforms, gang reduction initiatives and mental health advisory panels to address trauma and its imprints. She frequents re-entry centers to discover what’s working and isn’t in her city and surrounding counties. A simple visit to any legal library in a Colorado Department of Corrections Facility and you will discover a letter of support from McCann to other inmates. This District Attorney has mothered this city for a long time, and the AYBOS Rebuild Your Mind Challenge would not exist today without her inspiration and encouragement.

Deputy Mike Jackson was the first to support the then, Beth McCann Rebuild Your Mind Mental Health Challenge. He was the first to take the Challenge on the Rebuild Your Mind Camera’s. Shively interviewed Jackson where he challenged Denver Mayor Michael Hancock and other elected officials. (see video/press release.)

Mr. Taylor, forty other inmates and C. A. Shively began sending the Beth McCann Rebuild Your Mind Mental Health Challenge & Initiative to everyone, except her, to get people to support her mental health efforts in the criminal justice system. Taylor, Shively and Deputy Jackson all admit it was a gutsy move but turned out great results, with McCann herself inspiring Andrew Romanoff to support the Rebuild Your Mind Mental Health Challenge. (see video)

McCann began supporting Taylor through letters, they wrote back and forth for the last two years of his incarceration. Taylor, Shively and several other Rebuild Your Mind stakeholders have either met, presented or just sat down to talk with McCann since Taylor’s release. When he talks with her, he proudly pronounces that she saved his life. To this, her reply is “I didn’t save Marchell, he saved himself, I just supported him in his process!”

In November of 2018, McCann invited newly released inmate Taylor and Rebuild Your Mind Mental Health Challenge developer, C.A. Shively, to present the initiative on her Mental Health Advisory Panel. Still in its infancy, the panel advised Taylor and Shively to finalize the initiative and return with the full plan. To date, the team has produced a Mental Health Bill and grant to include an 80-person facility plan which all encompass the overall goal of the initiative; To make Colorado the most efficient Trauma-Informed, Trauma-Conscious and Trauma-Responsive state in the United States.

Today, McCann is running again for the Denver District Attorney’s Office. What McCann has encouraged as district attorney, inspired Judge Brain Whitney to sentence Taylor to more treatment as opposed to incarceration. She has inspired Inmates to become mental health advocates, as well as active members of society. Taylor, Shively, and McCann meet often to discuss AYBOS Rebuild Your Mind Mental Health Initiative. AYBOS also supports McCann in her second race for Denver District Attorney. In fact, AYBOS Marketing is launching their own “McCann Can” Initiative to help support her new run for chief law enforcement officer of Denver. American College of Lifestyle Medicine Applauds NAACP on its Recent Passage of a Resolution Prioritizing Plant-Based Meals for Schools, Hospitals and Prisons

News Image

“This is a major step forward to improve the health of specific populations most at-risk for chronic disease.”

The American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) today applauded a resolution ratified by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) at its October 2019 Board of Directors Meeting to prioritize advocacy for mandatory plant-based meals in prisons and options for plant-based meals in K-12 schools and hospitals.

The resolution noted the focus be consistent with the data-driven research regarding the health outcomes provided by plant-based meals and consistent with California legislation which passed a mandatory plant-based meal option for K- 12 schools and hospitals and mandated 100% plant-based meals in prisons to reduce the current recidivism rates.

“This is a major step forward to improve the health of specific populations most at-risk for chronic disease development caused by lifestyle choices,” said ACLM Preside Dexter Shurney, MD, MBA, MPH, FACLM, DipABLM. “For minority populations most susceptible to chronic diseases such as Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some cancers, we believe this will make a real difference in closing health equity gaps, as research shows that this recommended dietary lifestyle is efficacious where prevention is concerned, as well as treatment of already existing disease.”

The resolution also gave an implantation deadline that by the Fall 2021 school year, all K-12 schools, prisons and hospitals “will implement the plant-based meal options or 100% plant-based meal program and that the K-12 meal options shall include whole meal options and not just side-dish options for children, said meal plans shall include a high concentration of whole fruits and vegetables as grown.”

Finally, the resolution stated that “all institutions shall provide plant-based meal education and/or demonstrations or tasters to identify the most tasteful and culturally relevant plant-based alternatives and recipes that replace animal products to ensure consumption by students, inmates and patients.”

“We have already started to see signs of prevention-oriented policy with legislation in California requiring plant-based options in state-operated facilities and New York requiring plant-based options in hospitals,” said Marsha-Gail Davis, MD, co-chair of ACLM’s Community Engaged-Health Disparities Member Interest Group. “This decision on the part of the NAACP is a clear sign that the data supporting plant-based nutrition in the prevention of disease and the support of health and well-being is reaching policymakers who have the ability to make the greatest impact. As eloquently discussed in a new book by Dr. Anand Parekh, Prevention First, it is time to put prevention at the forefront of our health-related policies.”

“The decision by the NAACP to promote delicious, culturally relevant plant-based meals is exciting and wonderful news,” said Theresa Stone, MD, ACLM Board member and co-chair of ACLM’s Community Engaged-Health Disparities Member Interest Group. “Since this historical organization’s founding in 1909, the NAACP has been committed to ensuring the health and well-being of all persons. This strong effort will allow at-risk communities to embody life- enhancing behaviors that increase executive function, and reverse and prevent common chronic illnesses. The initiative comes at a great time given that 2019 Gallup polls revealed that populations of color reported eating 31 percent less meat in the past 12 months. The decrease in eating meat is 10 percent in non-blacks. Data from Gallup also show that Americans who earn less than $30,000 annually are almost twice as likely to have a plant-based dietary lifestyle as those who earn more than $75,000. We at ACLM are enthusiastic to follow the upcoming data from this resolution.”

ABOUT THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF LIFESTYLE MEDICINE: ACLM is the medical professional association for those dedicated to the advancement and clinical practice of Lifestyle Medicine as the foundation of a transformed and sustainable health care system. Lifestyle Medicine involves the use of a whole food, plant-predominant dietary lifestyle, regular physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substances and positive social connection as the primary therapeutic modality to prevent, treat, and, oftentimes, reverse the lifestyle-related, chronic disease that’s all too prevalent. ACLM addresses the need for quality education and certification. It supports its members in their individual practices and collective desire to domestically and globally promote Lifestyle Medicine as the first treatment option, as opposed to a first option of treating symptoms and consequences with expensive, ever-increasing quantities of pills and procedures. In a High-Tech World Fitness Success Stays Old Fashioned

Technology is fantastic and certainly makes things easier. Unfortunately when it comes to fitness, you still have to put in the work to get real long-lasting results.

Many people find it difficult to get motivated to exercise and, even once they’re ready to go, they might not know exactly what to do. This is a role that modern fitness technology often tries to play.

For example, the popular Peloton indoor exercise cycle provides access to on-demand classes, live-streaming, and real-time data. Another such product, the Mirror Home Gym, streams live and on-demand workout classes onto an LCD mirror. Users not only use the product to access classes, but they can also connect it to a Bluetooth heart rate monitor to track their heart rate during their workouts and keep track of how many calories they’ve burned. Many wearable fitness trackers (such as the Fitbit, Apple Watch, or Galaxy Watch Active) provide similar health data.

Much of the information these devices deliver can be useful. For instance, step counts provided by most fitness trackers can give you a snapshot of your activity level and potentially motivate you to be more active. Monitoring your heart rate and other vital signs could let you know how hard your body is working while you exercise. Having access to routines, workouts and digital “coaches” can give you training tips and information on which workouts to try. All of these details can be useful and lead to increased health.

However, it’s important to remember that there is no “magic answer” that will allow you to get in shape without putting in time and effort. While technology like fitness trackers can help in many ways, they aren’t a shortcut or an easy answer.

“Motivation with a smile is what our in-home personal trainers deliver to hundreds of customers daily across Canada,” says Beth Spooner, president of Fitness on the Go. “Technology is fantastic and certainly makes things easier. Unfortunately when it comes to fitness, you still have to put in the work to get real long-lasting results. We understand that fitness may not be as enjoyable as watching Netflix, so our personal trainers bring the motivation needed to keep our clients on track and the enthusiasm to help enjoy the session.” It seems that we need a technology that drives our intrinsic motivation to be more successful in fitness, until then, hiring extrinsic motivation remains the antidote.

The reality is that exercise requires hard work and dedication. Technology can try to help you stay motivated by giving you routines and fitness data, but it can’t force you to exercise or get you in shape without you putting in the effort. You’ll still need to find the motivation to start and keep going. While technological equipment, tools, and trackers can be helpful, they’re not the only way to get in shape and they’re certainly not a replacement for hard work and effort. Wound Care Market Tops 22 Billion Dollars in New Report by Kalorama Information

Kalorama Information logo

While wound care products themselves benefit from cost-cutting trend as they reduce hospital stays, new reimbursement schemes can impact the $22.3 billion market.

The wound care market is a battle between the drive for innovation and the desire to cut costs, as healthcare market researcher Kalorama Information notes in a new report. While wound care products themselves benefit from the cost cutting trend, as they reduce hospital stays, new reimbursement schemes can impact the $22.3 billion market. Kalorama, part of Science and Medicine Group, made its prediction in its Worldwide Wound Care Market Summary.

A lack of effective treatment options, adding to the increased costs for wound care has contributed to the growing frustration in the industry. It is the goal of new and existing product manufacturers to capitalize on these concerns by offering products designed to improve healing rates and prevent wound formation. Industry participants have attempted to diversify their offerings by acquiring smaller companies with new and innovative technology. This move has created more competition among large wound care companies, driving prices down.

The Quality Payment Incentive that is part of the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) and Advanced Alternative Payment Models was implemented by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Clinicians are included in MIPS if they are an eligible clinician type and meet the low-volume threshold. Beginning in payment year 2019, the low-volume threshold encompassed allowed charges, the number of beneficiaries who receive services, and the number of services provided. Clinicians must participate in MIPS (unless otherwise exempt) if, in the determination period, they bill more than $90,000 for Part B-covered professional services, see more than 200 Part B patients, and provide 200 or more covered professional services to Part B patients.

Changes in 2019 included an expanded list of clinicians who must report, including physical therapists, audiologists, registered dietitians, occupational therapists, clinical psychologists, speech pathologists, and nutrition specialists.

Other changes include expanded codes for deep-tissue pressure injury, effective October 2019.

For home care, starting January 1, 2020, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will offer top reimbursement for the care provided to patients in the Patient-Driven Groupings Model (PDGM), including the assessment, treatment, and evaluation of surgical wounds, nonsurgical wounds, ulcers, burns, and other lesions. Per CMS data, the wound clinical grouping is one of the clinical groupings with the highest reimbursement potential.

Wound care patients have never been easy to manage, and now the industry must work to achieve success with this difficult population within the limitations of the PDGM payment cycle. Not only are wounds painful and stressful for the patient, but time and money also can be wasted when the wrong treatment is provided or even if the same treatment is carried out for too long without success.

Due to delay in the next round of competitive bidding, the program has temporarily ended last year – The gap in competitive bidding contracts is expected to last throughout 2020. What this means for participants is that any Medicare-enrolled durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and suppliers (DMEPOS) supplier may furnish DMEPOS items and services to people with Medicare in the former competitive bidding areas (CBAs). Medicare patients can switch their DMEPOS supplier if they wish.

Vendors competing in the market include:

  • Johnson & Johnson
  • 3M Health Care
  • MoInlycke Healthcare, LLC
  • Medtronic, Inc.
  • Smith & Nephew
  • Arjo
  • Baxter
  • B.Braun
  • Cardinal Health
  • Coloplast
  • ConvaTec
  • GSK
  • Hartmann
  • Hill-Rom
  • Lohmann & Rauscher
  • Pfizer

Cure Quest Novel Debuts as New Adult Podcast

“The Boy from Yesterday”

“People today ought to be grateful that diseases that would have killed their loved ones in the past are curable today with modern medicine.” — K.B. Howard, author

Author K. B. Howard has announced the launch of his debut New Adult genre novel, “The Boy from Yesterday,” as a podcast show. Following the trend of more authors issuing their novels as free podcast downloads, with chapters as episodes, Howard adds his title to the growing genre of New Adult fiction, which focuses on slightly older characters than Young Adult, often college-age or young professionals.

“The Boy from Yesterday” is the story of Tom Flannery, 20, a farm boy in New England in 1890, who time-travels with the help of a mystical heirloom to the present day in search of modern medical help for a sick friend, Sam Beckins. In the present day, Tom meets a young university student and falls in love with her. Later, we learn that Tom’s mission to bring back the medicine and save his friend in the past has more urgency, lest the future be changed forever.

Howard got the story idea, in part, from the controversy over the anti-vaxxer movement. Commenting to a friend one day in exasperation, Howard said, “People today ought to be grateful that diseases that would have killed their loved ones in the past are curable today with modern medicine,” a reference to Howard’s own 30 years of successfully living with HIV, through various anti-retroviral medicines.

“K.B. Howard” is the pen name of Ken Howard, LCSW, a licensed psychotherapist in Los Angeles, with a long history of expertise in HIV mental health and social services. He is also the founder of GayTherapyLA.com, a group practice providing therapy and coaching services to gay male individuals and couples.

Howard is the author of another podcast show, “Gay Therapy LA with Ken Howard, LCSW,” based on his 28 years in psychotherapy practice, and has written two previous books,“Self-Empowerment: Have the Life You Want!” and “Positive Outlook: Collected Essays on Successfully Living with HIV Today,” both available in various formats on Amazon.com. A Facebook page for the novel is here.

Howard is launching “The Boy from Yesterday” podcast novel with its prologue and four chapters, with subsequent episodes/chapters to be released approximately weekly. The direct link to subscribe is: http://theboyfromyesterday.libsyn.com/

Year-Long HCP and Patient Education Digital Initiative on Pediatric Epilepsies Launches, with Special Focus on Dravet Syndrome from PlatformQ Health

“We are grateful for the opportunity to present actionable continuing medical education for health care professionals and impactful programming for rare disease patients and caregivers.” – Peter L. Saltonstall, President and CEO of NORD

February marks the beginning of a year-long, digital education initiative for HCPs and caregivers with children with pediatric epilepsy, presented in partnership with leading aligned advocacy organizations like the National Organization for Rare Disease (NORD) and Dravet Syndrome Foundation, and more.

“We are excited for the opportunity to provide education to HCPs and caregivers to help alleviate some of the significant burden Dravet syndrome, Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS), and other pediatric epilepsies places on the patient and family/caregiver,” shared Robert Rosenbloom, CEO of PlatformQ Health. “HCPs need more education to not only be able to better recognize, diagnose, and treat these conditions, but to address the full burden of disease and its adverse effects – including clinical and non-clinical quality-of-life and financial issues that arise while caring for their child. Similarly, caregivers and families will have their own track of programs, released throughout the year, offering best in class and practical information to help families provide the best care for their loved one.”

HCPs will have free access to four live-online, interactive CME/CE activities on Dravet syndrome, Anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) and Lennox Gastaut Syndrome:

  • February 2020 – Humanistic and Economic Burden of Dravet Syndrome: Multidisciplinary Approach to Recognize and Address
  • April 2020 – Dravet Syndrome: Opportunities for Improvement in Diagnosis and Management
  • June 2020 – Assessing the Impact of AEDs: What Constitutes Clinical Meaningful Effect for Dravet Syndrome
  • January 2021 – Lennox Gastaut Syndrome: Optimizing Diagnosis, Treatment, and Patient Outcomes

In addition, a series of eight online educational programs will be released for caregivers and families, focusing on shared decision making, early disease stages (recognizing symptoms, post-diagnosis), effective therapies, managing care transition, and family demands & resources. The initiative will also support a live interactive online broadcast for caregivers in Fall of 2020 with additional opportunities for live and pre-session Q&A with expert, advocacy and peer panelists.

“This series of educational programs will provide an important educational opportunity for our patient community,” explained Mary Anne Meskis, Executive Director at Dravet Syndrome Foundation. “Because of the high care burden for someone with Dravet syndrome, travel to in-person conferences or workshops is difficult for families and caregivers. These virtual events offer a chance to learn from home as the caregiver’s schedule allows.”

The initiative will launch February 13th with a program designed for HCPs and caregivers to view together – an aligned educational program – on Dravet Syndrome. The Humanistic and Economic Burden of Dravet Syndrome: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Recognize and Address will focus on:

  • The burden of caring for a child with Dravet syndrome from a caregiver’s perspective – the strain of caring, stigmatization, and financial toll
  • Effects on caregivers, siblings and family members – a focus on mental health and caregiver quality of life as a quality measure for HCPs
  • Caregiver support & education on best practices on caring for their child, and its influence on the child’s evaluation and management
  • Interventions for physical, emotional, social and financial support

Participants will hear from HCPs, advocacy leaders, as well as a parent of a child with Dravet syndrome – Kelly Knupp, MD, MSCS of University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Campus, Dagmar Amtmann, PhD of University of Washington, Seattle, and Nicole Villas, Board President & Scientific Director of Dravet Syndrome Foundation.

“At NORD, we are grateful for the opportunity to present actionable continuing medical education for health care professionals and impactful programming for rare disease patients and caregivers,” said Peter L. Saltonstall, President and CEO of NORD. “We are proud of our partnership with PlatformQ Health and look forward to together providing programs that will positively impact the future of the rare community.”

This series of activities is supported by an educational grant from Zogenix, Inc.
