New Name Clarifies the Key Role the Hospital Plays in the Mount Sinai Health System

Arthur A. Gianelli, President of Mount Sinai Morningside and Chief Transformation Officer for the Mount Sinai Health System

“Mount Sinai Morningside has grown into a top-tier health care facility that serves as this region’s gateway to the Mount Sinai Health System,” said Kenneth L. Davis, MD, President and CEO of the Mount Sinai Health System.

Mount Sinai St. Luke’s hospital will now operate under the name Mount Sinai Morningside, reinforcing the hospital’s integral role as part of the world-renowned Mount Sinai Health System and the primary provider of health care to the 148,000 residents of West Harlem, including Morningside Heights.

The new name was approved by Mount Sinai Health System’s Boards of Trustees, the New York State Department of Health, and the New York Secretary of State. The change becomes effective immediately.

“This new name not only reaffirms our 124-year legacy of serving the communities constituting West Harlem, including Morningside Heights, but also our commitment to delivering technologically advanced Mount Sinai-level care to our patients, who are increasingly coming to us from all five boroughs, Westchester, New Jersey, and even internationally,” said Arthur A. Gianelli, President of Mount Sinai Morningside and Chief Transformation Officer for the Mount Sinai Health System. “We have undergone a transformation that positions Mount Sinai Morningside as an integral part of the Mount Sinai Health System. Our patients now have convenient access to a vast network of world-renowned physicians and cutting-edge medical care.”

“Mount Sinai Morningside has grown into a top-tier health care facility that serves as this region’s gateway to the Mount Sinai Health System, expanding access for Upper Manhattan, New Jersey, Yonkers, Westchester, and surrounding areas,” said Kenneth L. Davis, MD, President and CEO of the Mount Sinai Health System. “The hospital’s rebranding and transformation efforts reaffirm our commitment to setting standards for excellence and innovation in health care through technically advanced and groundbreaking procedures, equipment, and research that result in better outcomes for our patients.”

Mount Sinai Morningside’s transformation is the result of hundreds of millions of dollars in investments in clinical services, facilities, equipment, and information technology. Physicians with international reputations have been recruited, and a number of international clinical trials have been launched at Mount Sinai Morningside. Centers of excellence have been established in cardiology and cardiac surgery; diabetes, endocrinology and bariatric surgery; geriatrics; and trauma services. Numerous investments have been made to upgrade Mount Sinai Morningside, including the installation of new clinical equipment, the introduction of a state-of-the-art electronic medical record (EMR) system, acquisition of best-in-class surgical robotic technology, and the construction of a soon-to-open inpatient unit with all private rooms.

Mount Sinai Morningside has opened a new Ambulatory Care Center at 114th Street and Amsterdam Avenue. The Ambulatory Care Center includes outpatient exam space for a variety of clinical specialties, an imaging center, a cancer and non-cancer infusion suite, and numerous diagnostic and procedural centers. Primary care services are now available in a new space at 91st Street and Columbus Avenue, as well as at 147th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard in the Sugar Hill community.

The James P. Jones Daily Management and Incident Command Center was unveiled in 2018, launching Mount Sinai Morningside into a new era of technologically advanced hospital operations. The Command Center leverages the hospital’s EMR system, using data science to provide descriptive and predictive information to decision-makers so that they can deploy resources to deliver the safest and most efficient care possible. The Command Center also facilitates rapid and comprehensive responses to emergency situations inside and outside the hospital. The Center was the first of its kind in the Mount Sinai Health System and is one of a select few in the country.

Mount Sinai Morningside has earned a number of important designations. Two of its clinical services—diabetes/endocrinology and nephrology—are ranked among the best in the country by U.S. News and World Report. Mount Sinai Morningside operates one of just two Trauma Centers certified by the American College of Surgeons located north of 60th Street in Manhattan. It has secured accreditation from the American College of Emergency Physicians as a Geriatric Emergency Department and by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement as an Age Friendly Health System. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has awarded Mount Sinai Morningside a 4 out of 5 star rating for safety, quality, and patient experience. And the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society just granted Mount Sinai Morningside its highest rating (Stage 7) for the adoption and utilization of its EMR. Only 7 percent of hospitals across the country have achieved this designation.

“Our community’s capacity to thrive and the enduring connections between West Harlem families is affirmed by the evolution of care found through this hospital,” remarked Jennifer Beisser, Executive Director of Morningside Area Alliance. “As one of our Alliance’s founders, we applaud the hospital’s continued investment in our unique community.”

The SPEAC System’s sEMG Seizure Monitoring Results To Be Featured at the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society (ACNS) Annual Meeting

sEMG Seizure Monitoring, SPEAC System, Brain Sentinel

SPEAC System

“We have never had a tool like sEMG that makes it practical to acquire continuous, very long-term, electrophysiological data validated to differentiate seizures*”

Brain Sentinel announces it is hosting a Product Theater Showcase session for attendees of the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society (ACNS) Annual Meeting in New Orleans. Entitled, “Clinical Utility of sEMG Monitoring”, the program will cover 4 topic areas:

1. sEMG signatures of GTC seizures

2. Differentiating between sEMG recorded during GTC seizures and other motor events

3. Identification of patients who may benefit from sEMG monitoring

4. Real-world examples of sEMG monitoring

“The SPEAC System, which is the only FDA-cleared product using the sEMG biomarker for seizure monitoring, has been in clinical practice long enough for us to begin understanding its impact,” said Dr. Luke Whitmire, PhD, Chief Science Officer of Brain Sentinel. Whitmire continued, “This session at ACNS will continue the dialogue and discussion that began with the community in December 2019, at an epilepsy conference in Baltimore, MD. The session will show how recorded sEMG signals and quantification of sEMG frequency characteristics uncover patterns that can help physicians characterize events.”

ACNS attendees are invited to continue in the discussion. Details of the event are as follows.

  • Saturday, February 8, 2020
  • 12:45 p.m. – 1:45 p.m.
  • Conti Room at the The Roosevelt New Orleans Hotel

Speakers:

1. Selim R. Benbadis MD, FAAN, FACNS

Professor of Neurology and Director

Comprehensive Epilepsy Program, The University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida and Tampa General Hospital

2. Ro Elgavish MD, PhD, FAES

Epileptologist

Brain Sentinel Diagnostic Services Medical Director

“Ideally as epileptologists, what we want is EEG, audio, video, everything. The problem is I can’t do video EEG monitoring for 70 days in a row. It doesn’t work,” said Dr. Selim Benbadis, Director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at the University of South Florida. Benbadis continued, “If the patient continues to report convulsions after prescribing anti-seizure medications, it’s important to verify the diagnosis. With the SPEAC System, I can get electrophysiological recordings, frequency decomposition analyses, and possibly audio of the events. I’ve had some very interesting and unexpected results that I’m excited to share at ACNS.”

“We have never had a tool like sEMG that makes it practical to acquire continuous, very long-term, electrophysiological data validated to differentiate seizures*,” said Dr. Ro Elgavish, Brain Sentinel Diagnostic Services Medical Director. Elgavish continued, “Using the SPEAC System, over a 30-day, 60-day, or even 90-day monitoring period, physicians have an objective tool to collect data to correlate with subjective, patient-reported events to confirm, establish, or clarify the seizure management plan.”

“Physicians use the SPEAC System to quantify and qualify the types of seizure events their patients experience. This type of clarity is important to help provide the best care for patients with seizures,” said Chris Fashek, CEO of Brain Sentinel. Fashek continued, “There is a data gap between short-term EEG studies and low-tech patient diaries. The SPEAC System is filling that gap for patients every day.”

About Brain Sentinel

Brain Sentinel, Inc. is a privately held company based in San Antonio, Texas, pioneering the use of sEMG technology to help improve the lives of people living with epilepsy. Brain Sentinel manufactures robust diagnostic monitoring platforms for seizures. TGA Premier Sports Lauded Among Top Franchisors on Entrepreneur List and Franchise Business Review’s Rankings

Being the leader in golf and tennis introductory programs and the first to incorporate STEAM into a youth sports curriculum, 2019 saw us restructure our offering to allow sports minded entrepreneurs the ability to own any combination of our sports

TGA Premier Sports (TGA), the go-to brand for introducing children to sports and the nation’s most prolific provider of in-school- and community-based youth sports enrichment programs, has been named to Entrepreneur’s Franchise 500® ranking, a distinction that the publication says indicates TGA is among companies “that continue to evolve to keep going strong year after year.”

The 41st annual Franchise 500® appears in the January 2020 issue of Entrepreneur with TGA Premier Sports at No. 460 on the list. More than 1,100 companies applied for Franchise 500® consideration, which made the selection process the most competitive to date. Using a proprietary ranking formula called its “Five Pillars of the Franchise 500”, Entrepreneur analyzed key business factors when evaluating franchise opportunities, including costs and fees, size and growth, support, brand strength and financial strength and stability.

According to Entrepreneur, “More than forty years after the very first Franchise 500® ranking, the franchise industry is still going strong and more competitive than ever.” TGA was also listed among companies included in Entrepreneur’s list of “Hottest Franchise Categories for 2020,” in the Fitness Businesses category.

“It’s an honor to be recognized on Entrepreneur’s Franchise 500® list. At No. 460, it makes us work even harder to climb the ladder businesswise while impacting youth and families in their communities through sports. Being the leader in golf and tennis introductory programs and the first to incorporate STEAM into a youth sports curriculum, 2019 saw us restructure our offering to allow sports minded entrepreneurs the ability to own any combination of our sports that best suits their passion and needs of their local community,” says Joshua Jacobs, CEO of TGA Premier Sports.

The accolades continued to roll in with TGA’s recent inclusion in Franchise Business Review’s list of the “11 Top Rated Youth Sports Franchises Worth Investing In.” TGA came in at No. 2 on that ranking. Franchise Business Review surveys hundreds of franchisees, every year, from dozens of youth sports franchise brands. FBR then rates the top brands in the category based solely on franchisee satisfaction.

TGA believes “Sports Change Lives” and its franchise owners bring a think globally but act locally mantra to their businesses. TGA presently offers Golf, Tennis, Cheerleading, Flag Football, Floor Hockey, Lacrosse, Ultimate, and Volleyball programming opportunities. Through TGA’s Player Pathway to Success, TGA programming is designed to create a passion for sports at an early age and encourage today’s youth to Keep Playing!®.

Trident University Launches New Doctoral-Level Health Administration Program

The healthcare industry is experiencing remarkable growth and has an increased need for highly-skilled, seasoned professionals. This rigorous program is designed to provide graduates with the tools needed to lead at the highest organizational levels. – Dr. Ryan Dwight, Director, DHA program

Starting this April, Trident University International (Trident) will begin offering its new Doctor of Health Administration (DHA) program. This is the University’s sixth doctoral-level program and second within its College of Health and Human Services.

The goal of this program is to help health administrators prepare to pursue opportunities in this fast-growing and quickly-changing field. Impacted by regulatory and legal policy, political and social trends, and technological innovations, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment of medical and health services manager will see growth of 18% from 2018 to 2028.

“The healthcare industry is experiencing remarkable growth and has an increased need for highly-skilled, seasoned professionals,” states Dr. Ryan Dwight, Director of Trident’s DHA program. “With an emphasis on applied research, this rigorous program is designed to provide graduates with the tools needed to lead at the highest organizational levels.”

Students in this online doctoral program will be trained to critically evaluate research, and the political, social, and legal climates of modern healthcare administration. Successful graduates will have an expert-level understanding of applied research, and an understanding of how this information can be used to effectively lead health organizations in ethical, social, legally, financially, and culturally responsible ways.

The DHA program culminates in a Doctoral Study Project that graduates must successfully defend. The project is a comprehensive study using applied research methods to investigate an area of healthcare administration that is of interest to the student.

Like other Trident programs, the DHA program is stackable. This allows graduates from Trident’s Master of Science in Health Administration (MSHA) or Master of Science in Health Sciences (MSHS) programs the option of applying up to 16 credits towards the DHA program. Students who have successfully obtained a health-related graduate degree from another regionally accredited institution may also be eligible to transfer up to 16 credits into this new program.

Courses that can be transferred into the DHA program include Health Care Finance, Health Care Law, Regulations, and Ethics, Healthcare Delivery Systems, and Health Equity.

Enrollment is now open for Trident’s Doctor of Health Administration program. Instruction begins on April 13.

First patients undergo new heart procedure at Blessing Health System

Dr. John Arnold, Dr. Amy Bates, Dr. Jeff Cook

TAVR team- Dr. John Arnold, Dr. Amy Bates, Dr. Jeff Cook

“The advantage of TAVR is that it is minimally invasive compared to a surgical aortic valve replacement. For patients who may not be a good candidate for surgery, TAVR can be an option for them to improve their health and quality of life,” said Amy Bates, APRN-AGACNP, Valve Clinic Coordinator.

The first patients in the region with a common, yet serious heart valve condition known as aortic stenosis, have been treated recently using a new procedure at Blessing Health System called Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement or TAVR. Blessing is the only healthcare provider in a 75-mile radius performing the TAVR procedure.

The Condition

Aortic stenosis is a narrowing of the aortic valve opening. Stenosis occurs when a valve stiffens due to damage, scarring or deposits, and subsequently has trouble opening. Because the valve is unable to open completely, the heart muscle must work harder to push blood through the valve.

Although some people have aortic stenosis as a result of a congenital heart defect called a bicuspid aortic valve, this condition more commonly develops during aging as calcium or scarring damages the valve and restricts the amount of blood flowing through the valve.

Symptoms of aortic stenosis include a heart murmur, breathlessness, chest pain, pressure or tightness, fainting, or a noticeable decline in activity level.

Jeffery Cook, MD, interventional cardiologist, Blessing Physician Services, says the condition can be missed because its symptoms are also associated with other conditions.

“It’s common to hear patients say. ‘I’ve had a murmur for a long time but no one has thought anything of it.’ By the time we see them, they are very debilitated, very short of breath, passing out, that sort of thing. And, lo and behold, they have severe aortic stenosis.”

Aortic stenosis mainly affects older people – beginning after age 60, but often does not show symptoms until ages 70 or 80.

The New Treatment Option

Treating aortic stenosis requires replacing the malfunctioning heart valves. For many years that had to be done during surgery. Some people are not candidates for surgery due to other health conditions. TAVR is a minimally invasive procedure, during which a new heart valve is placed via a catheter using X-ray guidance.

“The valve device deploys without having to stop the heart,” said John Arnold, MD, cardiothoracic surgeon, Blessing Hospital.

“The advantage of TAVR is that it is minimally invasive compared to a surgical aortic valve replacement. For patients who may not be a good candidate for surgery, TAVR can be an option for them to improve their health and quality of life,” said Amy Bates, APRN-AGACNP, Valve Clinic Coordinator, Blessing Health System.

Patients who undergo TAVR can be released from the hospital in two days, compared to 4-5 days for those who undergo surgical valve replacement.

The TAVR procedure is performed by Drs. Cook and Arnold. Valve Clinic Coordinator Bates assists the patient with arranging for the testing needed before TAVR and with any needs the patient may have after the procedure.

Blessing offers Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) treatment for depression

Woman in TMS treatment

“Nationwide, results have been phenomenal,” said Bejoy John, MD, psychiatrist, Blessing Physician Services. “Relapse rates are comparatively less than when using medication alone.”

Patients living with major depression have a new care option available through Blessing Physician Services. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an FDA approved, non-invasive treatment that can provide relief of depressive symptoms when medications and talk therapy, also known as psychotherapy, do not deliver the desired results.

Through an electromagnetic coil placed against the side of the patient’s head while they sit in a comfortable chair, TMS releases magnetic pulses that stimulate nerve cells and blood flow to the region of the brain affected by depression, relieving symptoms. Patients undergo 36 TMS treatments. The first appointment is one hour. The remaining appointments are approximately 30 minutes.

“Nationwide, results have been phenomenal,” said Bejoy John, MD, psychiatrist, Blessing Physician Services. “Relapse rates are comparatively less than when using medication alone.”

Salvador Sanchez, MD, psychiatrist, Blessing Physician Services, says TMS differs from Electroconvulsive Therapy or ECT.

“There is no hospitalization with TMS, as there is with ECT. There is no period of recovery after a TMS treatment, as there is after ECT. And the side effects of TMS are minimal when compared to ECT,” said Dr. Sanchez

TMS side effects may include headache and lightheadedness.

“Patients are more willing to complete TMS therapy because it has fewer side effects and less discomfort than medications and ECT,” added Dr. John.

“This is a treatment, not a cure,” Dr. Sanchez stated. “Medications will still be needed for the majority of patients. TMS gives people living with depression another option to improve their quality of life.”

While TMS is considered safe, people with metal devices in the upper part of their bodies and pregnant women cannot receive the treatment.

There are eight recognized forms of depression, making it the most common form of mental illness. In general, depressions causes a person feelings of sadness and hopeless that can leave them unable to function in their daily life, cause suicidal thoughts and require hospitalization.

Simon’s Heart and Nikomed Team Up to Raise Awareness of Screening to Prevent Sudden Cardiac Death in Kids

“When I first became aware of Simon’s Heart, I instantly felt a natural synergy with their mission. We believe in the organization and hope featuring their logo on our packaging will help them expand their outreach efforts for this vitally important issue.” – Neil Epstein, VP of Sales and Marketing

Before they met, Darren Sudman and Neil Epstein had no idea their offices were only about 10 miles away from each other in the outskirts of Philadelphia. Eventually they were introduced through mutual friends. Right from the start they knew they had something in common: deep knowledge of cardiac issues. Sudman is co-founder of Simon’s Heart, the organization he and his wife Phyllis founded in memory of their son Simon, who died suddenly in infancy partly due to sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). Epstein is the VP of Sales and Marketing at Nikomed, a major global supplier of electrocardiogram (ECG) electrodes and other heart monitoring products. The two struck up a friendship that ultimately became a partnership to raise awareness of the critical need for heart screening for kids.

Coming soon, Nikomed will introduce a major addition to product packaging for its ECG electrodes (known as Nikotab). Starting in May 2020, Nikotab packaging will feature the Simon’s Heart logo and URL, making it possible for healthcare professionals, parents and others to learn more about Simon’s Heart’s efforts to advocate for heart screening that may uncover warning signs that can lead to sudden cardiac death. Epstein said, “When I first became aware of Simon’s Heart, I instantly felt a natural synergy with their mission. We believe in the organization and hope featuring their logo on our packaging will help them expand their outreach efforts for this vitally important issue.”

Sudman commented, “By having the Simon’s Heart logo featured on the Nikotab packaging, we hope to gain visibility among the medical community. Right now, our message of the need for heart screenings for kids is primarily reaching parents and student athletes. We want to engage doctors, nurses and other health professionals to establish a dialogue with us that will lead to better solutions. EKGs are routine for adults. Kids only get heart screens when health professionals think there’s a problem. That must change.”

Simon’s Heart aims to reduce the incidents of sudden cardiac arrest and death in children by changing the cardiac standard of care to include heart screenings and making AED devices more accessible in places where kids learn and play. Their efforts include advocacy, awareness, education and legislation.

A major initiative for Simon’s Heart is Screen Across America. Working with a network of more than 75 cardiologists, Simon’s Heart has provided free heart screenings to over 18,000 students around the United States. To date, more than 100 students were found to have heart conditions. The American Academy of Pediatrics estimates about 2,000 children die every year from sudden cardiac arrest. It is the leading cause of death of student athletes.

About Nikomed USA, Inc.

Founded in 1986, Nikomed USA is headquartered in Hatboro, Pennsylvania. As the only ECG electrode supplier in the world that sells exclusively through distribution, the company provides a full line of the highest quality equipment, devices and accessories to the healthcare industry, including Resting and Monitoring ECG Electrodes, Electro-Surgical Grounding Pads and Related Accessories through its extensive network of distribution partners. About Simon’s Heart

Simon’s Heart was established in 2005 in memory of Simon Sudman, a seemingly healthy three-month-old who died from an undetected heart condition. The organization provides free heart screenings to students; advocates for legislation to protect student athletes; distributes AED devices; promotes research through its digital registry; and raises awareness through cause marketing campaigns. “In today’s fitness world, personal trainers and fitness instructors need more than great education to grow their business,” said Kyle Tomlin, canfitpro’s vice president of operations. “A fitness professional must also be a great business operator.
