Ketamine Infusion Therapy for Psychiatric Disorders Position Statement Issued by American Association of Nurse Anesthetists and American Psychiatric Nurses Association

CRNAs and PMH Nurses complement each other’s unique expertise in the delivery of ketamine infusion therapy with a shared focus on improving patient safety and outcomes.

Ketamine infusion therapy is increasingly being used to treat illnesses such as major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, treatment resistant depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) are educated and trained to provide ketamine infusion therapy services to individuals with chronic and medication resistant mental health disorders, collaborating with professionals such as Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurses (PMH nurses) who specialize in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of psychiatric-mental health disorders.

To support implementing this therapy with a focus on patient safety, positive outcomes, and general well-being, the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) and the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) have issued a joint position statement. This statement outlines the important roles of PMH nurses and CRNAs in providing ketamine infusion therapy for psychiatric disorders and provides crucial resources to support each provider. By leveraging the scope and standards of practice of both PMH nurses and CRNAs, these professionals collaborate to provide ketamine infusion therapy in a manner that promotes safe and effective treatment for patients.

“Psychiatric-mental health nurses play a vital role in the assessment, referral to treatment, and ongoing monitoring of patients receiving ketamine infusion therapy for psychiatric disorders. Through their nursing expertise in psychiatric-mental health, they ensure that patients who receive ketamine infusion therapy achieve the best possible mental health outcomes in a safe and therapeutic manner that promotes their long-term recovery,” says APNA President Gail Stern, RN, MSN, PMHCNS-BC. “We are fortunate to be able to collaborate with our CRNA colleagues in providing this emerging treatment which holds promise for so many individuals with psychiatric disorders.”

“The use of ketamine infusion therapy to help treat psychiatric disorders is a godsend for many patients, particularly for those patients where standard treatment has not worked,” says AANA President Kate Jansky, “CRNAs and PMH Nurses complement each other’s unique expertise in the delivery of ketamine infusion therapy with a shared focus on improving patient safety and outcomes. We are grateful for the opportunity to work closely with our psychiatric-mental health nursing colleagues to bring comfort and quality of life to patients in need of this new therapeutic treatment.”

“APNA is proud to partner with AANA to provide a joint statement that will help guide nursing professionals as they provide this therapy,” say APNA Executive Director Nicholas Croce Jr., MS. “Providing evidence-based resources and promoting collaboration amongst professionals will only serve to enrich the safe and effective care patients receive.”

“It has been an honor and privilege to work in partnership with the APNA to develop this important position statement defining the roles and responsibilities of these exceptional nursing professionals in the administration of this new and effective therapeutic treatment,” says AANA CEO Randall Moore, DNP, MBA, CRNA.

Founded in 1931 and located in Park Ridge, Ill., and Washington, D.C., the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) is the professional organization representing nearly 54,000 Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) and student registered nurse anesthetists across the United States. As advanced practice registered nurses, CRNAs are anesthesia experts who administer more than 49 million anesthetics to patients in the United States each year and are the primary providers of anesthesia care in rural America. For more information, visit http://www.aana.com and http://www.future-of-anesthesia-care-today.com.

The American Psychiatric Nurses Association is a national professional membership organization committed to the specialty practice of psychiatric-mental health nursing and wellness promotion, prevention of mental health problems and the care and treatment of persons with psychiatric disorders. APNA’s membership is inclusive of all psychiatric-mental health registered nurses including associate degree, baccalaureate, advanced practice (comprised of clinical nurse specialists and psychiatric nurse practitioners), and nurse scientists and academicians (PhD). APNA serves as a resource for psychiatric-mental health nurses to engage in networking, education, and the dissemination of research. For more information visit http://www.apna.org.

Authors Gopal Nayak and Mahendra Kumar Trivedi were recognized with International No. 1 best-selling status for the scientific research book “Impact of Biofield Treatment on Growth and Anatomical Characteristics of Pogostemon cablin (Benth.)” also known in the cosmetic and perfume industry as Patchouli.

The book garnered No. 1 status on Amazon in several categories including: Mind-Body Medicine, Herbal Remedies, Tropical Agriculture, Mind-Body Medicine, Aromatherapy, Medical Atlases, Nosology, Biophysics, Biochemistry, Sustainable Agriculture, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Horticulture, Homeopathy, Pathophysiology, Biotechnology, and Holistic Medicine.

Gopal’s research focused on Pogostemoncablin, which is a known aromatic plant that is cultivated for its essential oil used widely in perfumery and cosmetic industries. In the present study, the effect of biofield treatment was studied on the growth of P. cablin. For this study an in-vitro culture system was set up in two groups, viz., control and treatment, each of which was derived from three different explant sources, namely leaf, node and petiole. Further these in-vitro plantlets were hardened and transferred to external environment. The stomatal cells and epidermal hair growth were also studied at various morphogenetic stages. The study revealed that a single transmission of a biofield energy treatment produced a significant increase in growth in the treated group throughout all the morphogenetic phases from in-vitro to in vivo level. A remarkable increase in stomatal cells and epidermal hair was also seen in the treated group.

Gopal Nayak is one of the youngest enlightened spiritual gurus for the new generation in India.

CS Energy Projects in New Jersey, Rhode Island and Utah Selected for Prestigious Industry Awards

CS Energy (formerly Conti Solar) a leading integrated energy company that develops, designs and builds optimized projects in the solar, storage and emerging energy industries, announced that three of the company’s projects have been selected as winners in “The 2019 Engineering News Record (ENR) Regional Best Projects Awards.”. Independent juries of industry leaders in design and construction from each of ENR’s 10 regional editions judge construction projects using five criteria, including safety, innovation and teamwork.

For the ENR New York region, Cinnaminson Landfill Solar Farm, located in Cinnaminson, New Jersey, was selected as “Best Project” in the Energy/Industrial category. Built over a Superfund site, 13.0 MW project is part of PSE&G’s “Solar 4 All” program, which is concentrating on turning landfills and brownfields green by building solar farms on otherwise unusable sites. The Cinnaminson Landfill Solar project now has the capacity to power about 3,500 homes with clean energy. This project is a stellar example of how previously untenable space such as a landfill can be converted into a green energy generating field.

For the ENR New England region, the Gold Meadow Farms Solar Project, located in Cranston, Rhode Island, was selected as “Best Project” winner in the Energy/Industrial category. Owned, designed and now operated by Captona Partners and the state’s largest solar installation to date, the 21MW solar farm was developed by Southern Sky Renewable Energy and constructed by CS Energy. Prior to development, the Gold Meadow Farm’s property, (at one time in the past a dairy farm) was unused and overgrown with substantial stone ledge, which presented a challenging environment for solar development. The site now benefits approximate 2,200 Providence, Rhode Island homes by powering them with clean, renewable energy.

For the ENR Mountain States region, Hill Air Force Base Solar, located at the Hill Air Force Base, Utah, was selected as the Merit awardee in the 2019 “Intermountain Best Projects Winners” in the Energy/Industrial category. Energy Systems Group, the Air Force’s Energy Savings Performance Contractor, contracted CS Energy to engineer, procure and construct the 3.55 MW system. The project, which entails the installation of a new solar array at the base, will save the Air Force millions of dollars over the 20+ year lifespan of the system and brings the Air Force Base one step closer to microgrid capability with the potential to expand the project size and capability to add electric storage to the system.

Eric Millard, Chief Commercial Officer, CS Energy, added, “It is an honor to be recognized, especially with very respected and successful EPCs and developers competing in the categories. It truly speaks to the skills, passion for excellence and commitment that our regional teams display on a daily basis.”

World Molecular Imaging Society Highlights First-in-Human Infectious Disease Research in the Quest for Detection and Treatment

https://www.prweb.com/

WMIS showcased several new first-in-human studies on the detection and treatment of infectious diseases at its annual Congress (WMIC)

The World Molecular Imaging Society (WMIS) showcased several first-in-human studies on the detection and treatment of infectious diseases at its annual Congress (WMIC) recently held in Montreal. Highlighting two examples of these ground-breaking studies were noninvasive detection of residual HIV infected cell persistence and the development of pathogen-specific imaging approaches for pulmonary infection. Both studies demonstrate increased biomarker specificity for the disease model and was visualized using Positron Emission Tomography (PET), combined with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MR) in one project.

The first study, Translation of 89Zr-VRC01 for PET/MR Imaging of Persistence HIV: First-in-Human, was presented by Denis Beckford-Vera, Ph.D., Research Scientist, University of California San Francisco.

“A major obstacle to HIV eradication is the presence of infected cells that persist despite suppressive antiretroviral therapy (ART),” said Dr. Beckford-Vera. “HIV largely resides outside of the peripheral circulation, and thus numerous anatomical and lymphoid tissues that have the capacity to harbor HIV are inaccessible to routine sampling. The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate a new agent to non-invasively image HIV infection in patients using combined PET/MR.”

Despite the striking success of ART in HIV patients, residual infected cells persist indefinitely. Dr. Beckford-Vera and his team developed a radioconjugate (Zr-89 labeled antibody) that specifically binds to the viral coat protein of HIV which can be detected with PET/MR imaging. The team conducted studies using HIV positive patients and a control non-HIV group. After injecting both groups with the new agent, PET/MR showed greater uptake in places such as lymph node, bowel and bone marrow of the HIV group compared to the control group.

“Overall, we have combined PET/MR imaging with an HIV specific targeted radiotracer to image the HIV reservoir in humans,” said Dr. Beckford-Vera. “This study represents the first imaging study in HIV patients targeting the virus itself. Our research could help to characterize the body-wide burden of HIV, one of the major hurdles to successfully design and implement HIV curative or immune-based therapeutic strategies.”

The Noninvasive Diagnosis and Monitoring of Pulmonary Infections using Pathogen-Specific 18F-Fluorodeoxysorbitol (18F-FDS) PET – First in Human Study was presented by Alvaro Ordonez, M.D., Research Associate, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Dr. Ordonez indicated imaging tools, such as chest X-ray and computed tomography (CT), are frequently used in the management of pulmonary infections. However, he advised these modalities can be notoriously difficult to interpret as they rely on the presence of nonspecific structural abnormalities that often occur late in the disease process and can mimic other pathologies. Therefore, invasive procedures are frequently needed to diagnose infections.

The team prospectively enrolled patients with microbiologically confirmed pneumonia, due to Enterobacteriaceae, a Gram-negative bacteria such as E. coli, as well as controls with an inflammatory or oncologic pulmonary disease without infection. Patients were injected with 370 MBq of 18F-FDS and PET/CT performed one and two hours post-injection. A follow-up 18F-FDS and PET/CT was also performed in a subset of infected patients after the initiation of antibiotic to monitor the efficacy of the treatments.

The 18F-FDS PET scan was able to specifically detect and localize pulmonary infections in all the Enterobacteriaceae infected patients. PET activity was significantly higher in infected lesions compared with sterile, inflammatory or neoplastic pulmonary lesions demonstrating specificity for infectious lesions. Finally, 18F-FDS PET was also able to monitor the efficacy of antibiotic treatment, demonstrating a decrease in signal intensity and correlating with clinical improvement.

“We presented the first-in-human results of a novel bacteria-class specific PET imaging tracer for rapid and specific detection of pulmonary infections due to Enterobacteriaceae,“ said Dr. Ordonez. “This technology has the potential to substantially improve our ability to detect, monitor and prognosticate deep-seated infections. In addition, it can also help in developing precision medicine approaches for infectious diseases.”

All Button INC. Announces the Launch Date of Its Second Kickstarter Project, Fidget Ball

News Image

Users can rotate both spheres in perpetual motion while also enjoying the soft clicking of the gears. The combination of the action and ASMR sounds of the Fidget Ball have been discovered to help reduce stress and anxiety levels.

After 642 Kickstarter backers helped All Button INC. raise over $30,000 for the Airless Pen, the company has announced the launch of its second Kickstarter Project, Fidget Ball. The project is set to go live on Monday, September 2nd, 2019, at 9:00 pm PST.

Research and design development for the Fidget Ball began back in 2017, but was put on hold while the company shifted its focus and energy to the Airless Pen. After all of the Kickstarter rewards were delivered, All Button INC. resumed development for the Fidget Ball and created a fully functioning prototype earlier this year.

The concept for Fidget Ball has been finalized and is now undergoing a series of quality control tests. All Button INC. has also stated that manufacturing for the Fidget Ball will take place in South Korea.

After deciding to reinvent the form factor of traditional fidget spinners, All Button INC. was able to create the Fidget Ball, which utilizes two spheres that are connected through gears. Users can rotate both spheres in perpetual motion while also enjoying the soft clicking of the gears. The combination of the action and ASMR sounds of the Fidget Ball have been discovered to help reduce stress and anxiety levels.

The Fidget Ball also includes massage beads on the outer shell which can be used to target pressure points and massage different parts of the body. The massage effects from Fidget Ball are best for the hands, shoulder, and feet.

Due to its compact size, The Fidget Ball can be taken virtually anywhere. It is best enjoyed at the office, home, and in public transportation.

The Fidget Ball will be available in two colors, silver, and charcoal grey. Early Bird price slots have been capped at 50, so backers are encouraged to take advantage of the heavily discounted prices while they are still available. Any journalists or influencers interested in receiving a sample of Fidget Ball for review can reach out to All Button INC.’s media contact or through its Kickstarter page.

Transformations Treatment Center Hosts 2nd Annual National Sports Summit

News Image

In the ever-evolving world of addiction and trauma surrounding athletes and their unique challenges, it is as important as ever to be collaborative with all the different organizations that deal with the various sports.

Transformations Substance Abuse and Mental Health Treatment Center will be hosting their 2nd Annual National Sports Summit, August 25-26 at the Hyatt Place in Delray Beach, FL, once again bringing together addiction experts, former athletes, and clinical leaders from all major professional sports programs to discuss progress made over the last year in the way of treating retired and current athletes who are suffering from substance use disorder (SUD) and co-occurring disorders.

The idea for the summit came from Randy Grimes, a former 10-year Tampa Bay Buccaneer and the National Director of Business Development and Strategy for Transformations. Randy spent 20 years of his life battling addiction to pain medication which he developed while treating career-related injuries. “In the ever-evolving world of addiction and trauma surrounding athletes and their unique challenges, it is as important as ever to be collaborative with all the different organizations that deal with the various sports. The inaugural Sports Summit birthed that vision and was a huge success bringing all these different agencies under one roof for two days of integrating ideas,” Randy recounts.

Transformations is grateful for the return of After The Impact Fund, NFL Player Care Foundation, and the Baseball Assistance Team, and is excited to welcome new organizations this year such as Tulane University Center for Sport, Motorsports Safety Group, Jockeys’ Guild, Sandoz Inc., Prince Marketing Group, C4 Events, and Patients Preferred.

As part of this years’ agenda, there will be two featured keynote speakers who will be kicking off each morning of the summit with their unique presentations. On the first day, Dr. Robert Cantu, Co-Founder of the CTE Center at the Boston University School of Medicine, will be presenting on his work with concussion research over the last several years. He will speak on the signs and symptoms of CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy), concluding with his views on future player safety. Day two will feature Dr. Camille Kraft, the former administrator of the NFL Substance Abuse Program. Dr. Kraft will examine the current approach to substance abuse programs for professional athletes and her unique perspective will enable us to rethink the way we serve our clients.

“Taking the experience from last year and seeing where we could broaden our outreach to include more diversity, the second annual Sports Summit was conceived. We are so proud of the strides we’ve taken, the relationships we’ve developed, and the knowledge we’ve acquired from some of the brightest, most experienced and compassionate leaders and professionals from various sports backgrounds,” expresses Randy in his excitement for this year’s event.
