James Maisel, MD Receives Special Congressional Recognition for “Gift of Sight” Banko Award

https://www.prweb.com/

(L-R) Congressman Thomas R Suozzi, James M Maisel MD and Mary Naccarato, Chairperson “Gift of Sight”.

The award recognizes James Maisel’s “…enormous and innovative contributions to the research and treatment of eye disease for diabetics, and for the study of speech recognition medical language models that has changed the lives of countless people by truly giving them the Gift of Sight.”

James M. Maisel, MD, a retinal specialist who is Chairman and Founder of the Retina Group of New York and ZyDoc Medical Transcription, was honored with Special Congressional Recognition by Congressman Thomas R. Suozzi for the “Gift of Sight” Banko Award he received from the New York State Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America. He also was awarded a Citation from Laura Curran, Nassau County Executive for “leadership, dedication and service to the community.”

Dr. Joseph Bacotti introduced Dr. Maisel for the Gift of Sight Banko award which was presented by the Gift of Sight Chairperson Mary Naccarato at a luncheon attended by hundreds of members of the national organization. The award recognized “Your enormous and innovative contributions to the research and treatment of eye disease for diabetics, and for the study of speech recognition medical language models that has changed the lives of countless people by truly giving them the Gift of Sight.” Dr. Maisel previously was honored as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Humanitarian of 2017 at a JDRF Gala for his work in diabetic eye treatment.

According to Dr. Maisel “Over 10% of the American population is currently afflicted with diabetes. Diabetic eye disease, although extremely treatable, remains one of the leading causes of blindness and blurred vision in adults. It often has no early warning symptoms or pain. When advanced, it can cause blurred vision, floaters or total visual loss, but don’t wait until you notice problems with your vision. A dilated retina examination can detect diabetic retinopathy before vision loss begins. Healthy people need eye exams every three years and yearly after age 65. Diabetics should be evaluated yearly even without symptoms. While laser treatments at the proper time can prevent blindness for over 90% of patients, vitreous surgery can restore vision in others even with advanced complications such as vitreous hemorrhage or tractional retinal detachments. Blurred vision, that formerly was only slowed with focal laser treatment, can now be stabilized or improved in most patients with pharmacologic treatments administered in the office on a routine basis.”

About the New York State Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America

The Order Sons of Italy in America (OSIA) has provided a community in which both men and women of Italian descent have preserved and nurtured their Italian heritage. It continues to thrive, meeting the initial objectives of its founders through a wide variety of community, cultural, social, charitable, educational, patriotic and civic activities. Founded in 1905 as a mutual aid society for the early Italian immigrants, OSIA now has hundreds of thousands of family members located in all fifty states and the District of Columbia, making it the leading service and advocacy organization for the nation’s estimated 26 million people of Italian descent. http://www.nysosia.org/

About the Banko Award

The Banko Award is named after Anton Banko, the inventor of the first phacoemulsification machine to be used by Charles Kelman, M.D. who conceived of a new method of cataract removal. This method ushered in today’s advances in small incision surgery throughout medicine and remains widely utilized throughout the world.

What is the Gift of Sight Program?

The Gift of Sight Program of the New York OSIA Grand Lodge Foundation began in 1982 and gives both medical and financial assistance to people in need with vision problems. In addition to the many lay volunteers who serve on this committee, prominent physicians in the fields of ophthalmology, optometry and other related medical disciplines have donated their time and expertise to the program.

Who do they help?

The Gift of Sight has been a financial and medical sponsor to many children and adults for surgical procedures performed in hospitals throughout the United States. Housing accommodations have been met for patients who arrive for surgery from foreign countries.

What have they done?

The Gift of Sight purchased the Corneal Refrigeration Unit for the Long Island Eye Bank at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York. They also fund research grants for the Wilmer Eye Institute for Retinal Research at John Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.

Every year, the Gift of Sight program sponsors a guide dog through the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind in Smithtown, New York. Many senior citizens without health insurance who have not yet qualified for Medicare have had retinal or cataract surgery through the help of the Gift of Sight program. They are also a regular supporter of Helen Keller Services.

There are better ways to address these nonconformities, and an expert with over three decades of experience in the medical device industry — Connie Hoy, founder of Hoy & Associates Regulatory Consulting — is here to explain them in this informative webinar.

Using real-life examples that show appropriate versus inappropriate responses, Ms. Hoy will share how to:

  • Analyze the criticality of the audit findings
  • Avoid complicating the corrective actions and inadvertently overburdening organizations
  • Prioritize plans by identifying corrections and corrective actions
  • Write a sufficient corrective action and preventive action (CAPA) procedure

Hemanext to Present Extensive, Significant Red Blood Cell Data at AABB 2019

As we continue on our path toward CE Mark designation and FDA submission for our first product, HEMANEXT ONE®, we appreciate the work of our research collaborators.

Hemanext, a privately held medical technology company dedicated to creating a world with fewer and better transfusions, today announced its significant presence at the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) Annual Meeting, Oct. 19 – 22, 2019 in San Antonio, Texas.

Noteworthy is that AABB accepted for presentation all eight abstracts submitted by Hemanext and its research collaborators. Additional dialogue about the clinical needs surrounding improved red blood cells (RBCs) will occur at the Hemanext booth (#930) in Exhibition Halls 2-3.

“As we continue on our path toward CE Mark designation and FDA submission for our first product, HEMANEXT ONE®, we appreciate the work of our research collaborators,” said Hemanext President and CEO Martin Cannon. “The eight abstracts help paint a compelling picture of the potential for hypoxic RBCs to enhance patient care.”

Hemanext’s technology delivers an innovative approach to minimizing oxidative damage of stored blood, which continues to be a key unmet need that may significantly impact patient care. To learn more about this unmet need, Hemanext recommends attendance at the educational session entitled “RBC Storage: The Oxygen Paradox.” Chair France Pirenne, MD, PhD, Medical Director of the French Blood Establishment (EFS) of Ile de France and president of the French Society of Blood Transfusion, will lead a scientific discussion with three highly respected experts in transfusion medicine on Saturday, Oct. 19, 8:00 – 9:30am at the Convention Center’s Hemisfair Ballroom II.

Click here to learn more about the educational session.

Below are three of the eight preclinical abstracts investigating the potential benefits of hypoxic red blood cells (RBCs) that Hemanext and its collaborators will present during the annual meeting:

24h RECOVERY: Researcher Angelo D’Alessandro, PhD, Assistant Professor, University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine, Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics, will share findings from “Metabolic Predictors of 24h Post-Transfusion Recovery in End of Storage Control and Hypoxic Red Blood Cells” (Abstract OA3-ST4-29, oral presentation, Saturday, Oct. 19, 2:00 – 2:15pm at Convention Center Room 302).

RBC LESION IMPROVEMENT: Comparative analysis of hypoxic vs. conventional storage of RBCs is the focus of “Long-term hypoxic storage of red blood cells results in amelioration of lesion hallmarks and Increased in vivo recovery at 24 hours post-transfusion” (Abstract P-NE-17, poster presentation, Sunday, Oct. 20, 1:00 – 2:00pm, Convention Center Exhibit Halls 2-3).

SICKLE CELL ANEMIA: With transfusion therapy well-established as an important treatment for sickle cell anemia (SCA) and sickle cell disease (SCD), research into the appropriateness of hypoxically stored blood for this patient population is warranted. “Effects of hypoxic red blood cells on sickling kinetics of red blood cells from patients with sickle cell disease” (Abstract P-NE-5, poster presentation, Sunday, Oct. 20, 1:00 – 2:00pm, Convention Center Exhibit Halls 2-3).

Click here for information on all eight research abstracts that Hemanext will present at AABB 2019.

According to Paul M. Ness, MD, Senior Director, Division of Transfusion Medicine, Professor of Pathology, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, former editor of Transfusion—the Journal of the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) and past president of AABB, “Transfusion medicine physicians and their teams are on a perpetual search for new and better ways to improve outcomes for patients requiring massive and/or chronic RBC transfusions. Preclinical data being presented at AABB 2019 appears to reinforce the potential of hypoxically stored RBCs to improve patient care. My peers and I hope that these extremely encouraging data sets are validated in future clinical trials.”

ABOUT HEMANEXT

Hemanext is a privately held medical technology company dedicated to improving the quality, safety, efficacy and cost of transfusion therapy. The company’s research and development efforts center on the study and future commercialization of hypoxically stored red blood cells (RBCs). HEMANEXT ONE®, our initial product offering, is designed to improve the quality of life for chronic and high-volume transfusion patients while reducing costs.

Mount Sinai Health System Named 2019 Most Wired Recognition

Mount Sinai Health System has earned the 2019 College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) Most Wired recognition according to survey results released this month. Mount Sinai was certified level 8, one of the highest distinctions, because of the effective application of advance technologies into clinical and business programs to improve health and care in communities.

“Healthcare organizations across the globe are continually striving to raise the standard of care, pushing themselves and their peers to do better,” said CHIME President and CEO Russ Branzell. “We designed Most Wired to identify and share those leading practices so everyone can benefit. It is an honor to be among those that perform at the highest levels, knowing that the excellence they achieve will impact patients for years to come.”

“We are honored to receive the 2019 CHIME HealthCare’s Most Wired recognition,” said Kumar Chatani, Executive Vice President, Chief Information Officer & Dean for Information Technology at Mount Sinai Health System. “Mount Sinai has made substantial investments in technology to support our mission providing compassionate patient care in the many diverse communities we serve. This includes utilizing patient-friendly mobile apps that enhance patient experiences and leveraging emerging technologies that improve patient outcomes, including predictive analytics, machine learning and artificial intelligence.”

Innovation in patient care embraces emerging technologies and underscores the need for secure patient information exchange. Most Wired hospitals are transforming care delivery with knowledge gained from data and analytics, and investing in analytics to support new delivery models and effective decision-making and training clinicians on how to use analytics to improve quality, provide access, and control costs.

A total of 16,168 organizations were represented in the 2019 Most Wired program, which this year included three separate surveys: domestic, ambulatory and international. The surveys assessed the adoption, integration and impact of technologies in healthcare organizations at all stages of development, from early development to industry leading. Each participating organization received a customized benchmarking report, an overall score and scores for individual levels in eight segments: infrastructure; security; business/disaster recovery; administrative/supply chain; analytics/data management; interoperability/population health; patient engagement; and clinical quality/safety. Participants can use the report and scores to identify strengths and opportunities for improvement.

This is the second year that CHIME has conducted the survey and overseen the program. Last year CHIME made numerous improvements to the survey, governance and scoring methodology. This year CHIME added an ambulatory survey in addition to the domestic survey, expanded international outreach and incorporated an improved system that allows participating organizations to better benchmark their level of adoption and outcomes achieved. The system includes Most Wired certification at a level that reflects an organization’s overall performance. CHIME also revised the customized benchmarking report for ease of use and will again publish a report based on Most Wired responses to identify industry trends in 2019.
