HMP’s Why Wound Care?™ Launches Practicing Clinician Website Portal

HMP, a leading healthcare event and education company, today announced the launch of a new practicing clinician web portal as part of its Why Wound Care?™ (WWC) endeavor.

Created in 2015, the Why Wound Care™ initiative focuses on delivering education and increasing awareness for specialty careers in wound care and wound management. The initiative includes a dedicated website that provides a range of robust educational content and resources for faculty as well as medical and nursing students — and now, practicing clinicians — that feature free instructional courses, access to leading wound care journals, and discounts on continuing education.

“The launch of the Practicing Clinician portal further expands the scope of our work,” said Peter Norris, executive vice president, HMP. “With America’s aging population and the epidemic of diabetes and obesity, there has never been a greater need for wound clinicians in acute, sub-acute, or post-acute care settings. Research shows that too few clinicians receive sufficient training in the proper treatment and management of wounds during their academic training, and many outmoded therapeutic concepts are still in practice today. With the new portal, we’re working to address these educational gaps, increase the number of wound care specialists, and ultimately improve patient outcomes.”

An elite group of volunteers comprising multidisciplinary wound care practitioners guided the development of the new portal. Practicing professionals now have access to complimentary, evidence-based wound care materials, including:

  • Sixteen video modules on foundational wound care topics, including Acute Wound Healing Processes, Burns, Pressure Injuries, Venous Ulcers, Wound Infections;
  • Eighteen slide modules, including Risk Factors/Comorbidities for Chronic Wound Development, Wound Dressings, Wound Assessment, Wound Cleansing and Irrigation, and Pain Assessment and Management;
  • Five physical therapist-focused video modules;
  • Four podiatry-focused video modules; and
  • Downloadable PDFs of all 25 chapters of Chronic Wound Care: The Essentials

“We’re seeing more physical therapists looking to increase the number of wound care patients they see in their practice, especially with the advent of the new Patient Driven Payment Model (PDPM) and Patient Driven Grouping Model (PDGM) within post-acute care settings,” said Joseph McCulloch, PT, PhD, CWS, FAPTA, physical therapy chair for the initiative and former dean of the School of Allied Health Professions at Louisiana State University (LSU) Health Sciences Center. “I was pleased to be a part of expanding the Why Wound Care?™ resources to address the areas of clinical physical therapy expertise in order to optimize patient care.”

“Podiatrists who specialize in wounds are key members of any true multidisciplinary care team,” said Paul Kim, DPM, MS, podiatric surgeon, professor of plastic surgery and orthopedic surgery, medical director of the wound program at the University of Texas Southwestern, and Why Wound Care?™ board member. “I was pleased to lead the development of the podiatry section of the new portal and was honored to work with other podiatry experts who helped ensure the wound care content would be relevant not only to podiatrists, but to other practitioners new to this specialty.”

Chip Gaines To Be Honored As 2019 Aktiv Against Cancer Award Recipient

“We are thrilled to have Chip join us as this year’s recipient,” said Helle Aanesen, co-founder of AKTIV Against Cancer.

AKTIV Against Cancer, the organization co-founded by legendary runner Grete Waitz, and Helle Aanesen, today announced that author, television host, entrepreneur and philanthropist Chip Gaines will be the recipient of the 5th Annual AKTIV Against Cancer Award, which will be presented at a ceremony on November 14th at the historic New York Athletic Club.

Chip Gaines is the co-founder of Magnolia, a Waco, Texas-based company he started with his wife Joanna in 2003. In 2018, Chip launched Magnolia’s inaugural Silo District Marathon following a chance meeting with past AKTIV Against Cancer Inspiration Award recipient Gabrielle “Gabe” Grunewald. Since then, Chip has helped raise more than $1 million for the Brave Like Gabe Foundation – it is because of these philanthropic endeavors that AKTIV Against Cancer has chosen to honor Chip Gaines as the recipient of this year’s award.

“We are thrilled to have Chip join us as this year’s recipient,” said Helle Aanesen, co-founder of AKTIV Against Cancer, “The work he and Joanna have done to support causes far and wide, and all they have done around our mission and in honor and memory of Gabe Grunewald, will certainly inspire all of us as well as everyone in our combined communities.

In addition to the award to Chip Gaines, AKTIV Against Cancer will also be honoring two supporters for their work. Cancer survivor and advocate Aubrey Barr has run over 30 marathons with Fred’s Team, including the New York City Marathon and the Boston Marathon. Additionally, longtime Fred’s Team coach Jeff Rochford has trained and coached thousands of Fred’s Team runners across finish lines. Fred’s Team, named in honor of New York City Marathon co-founder Fred Lebow, is Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s running program, which has raised more than $85 million for cancer research since 1995.

The luncheon will be supported by adidas and the May and Samuel Rudin Family Foundation. Previous honorees of this award include Dr. Jordan Metzl & Kikkan Randall (2018), The Rudin Family & the late Gabriel Grunewald (2017), Meb Keflezighi (2016), and Mary Wittenberg (2015).

Greffex, Inc. Awarded NIH Contract for up to $18.7 Million

With support by the present NIH contract, GREFFEX expects to advance the development of two of its GreVac(TM) influenza vaccines through clinical trials.

GREFFEX, INC. was awarded a contract of $2.8M with a total of up to $18.7M from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health. This award will enable GREFFEX to develop and exploit its GreVac(TM) Plug-And-Play Technology to Expedite the Production of Vaccine Candidates for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases to target emerging infectious threats, whether natural or man-made.

GreVac(TM) vaccines are based upon GREFFEX’s proprietary GreGT Genetic Engineering Technology as a fast and flexible plug-and-play vaccine architecture of fully deleted helper virus independent adenoviral vectors of rare serotypes. The proprietary GreGT platform has been built upon two independently modifiable components to provide broad gene transfer applications.

The GreVac(TM) system incorporates versatility and speed to complement and ultimately change the present paradigm of immune protection against infectious diseases with a high eruption potential from the stockpiling of potential vaccine candidates to the just-in-time production of specific vaccines.

With support from the present NIH contract, GREFFEX expects to advance the development of two of its GreVac(TM) influenza vaccines through clinical trials. The activity of a vaccine directed against a highly pathogenic avian influenza will be compared to a novel universal influenza vaccine. This research initiative is funded by the NIAID, NIH, Department of Health and Human Services, under Contract HHS-NIH-NIAID-BAA2018 (BAA-2018 Omnibus Broad Agency Announcement: Research Area 2 (DMID) – Advanced Development of Vaccine Candidates for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases).

This year’s Emergency Nurses Week is October 6-12. Emergency Nurses Day® is Wednesday, October 9.

According to Rhonda Abbe, RN, BCEN, Director of Operations for SignatureCare Emergency Center, the company will use the occasion to recognize the commitment of emergency nurses to patient care.

“They make a difference in the lives of our patients and colleagues. The occasion is also a time to celebrate our specialty,” she said.

She added that areas of focus during the upcoming event will include education, wellness promotion, injury prevention and emergency healthcare.

“Emergency Nurses are nurses that are highly trained to save lives. At SignatureCare Emergency Center we will be celebrating the week with activities and gifts of appreciation. The Mayor of the City of Stafford, TX, Leonard Scarcella will visit SignatureCare Stafford ER on Monday, October 7, 2019 to present a proclamation honoring Nurses Week.
