Guide Dogs for the Blind Reunion to Offer Sensory Experience of Portland

News Image

Today, Guide Dogs for the Blind (GDB), the national nonprofit empowering individuals who are blind or have low vision by creating exceptional partnerships between people, guide dogs and communities, kicks off the organization’s momentous, weekend-long 2019 Guide Dogs for the Blind Alumni Reunion. Over 150 reunion attendees are coming together as a community for the event to celebrate GDB’s mission and to experience what the city of Portland has to offer. These individuals, many of whom are blind or visually impaired and will be traveling with their guide dogs, hail from locations throughout the U.S. and Canada, and have traveled to Portland for the reunion. This is a special event, as a GDB alumni reunion hasn’t occurred in Portland since 2015.

On Friday, October 18, various activities have been planned throughout the day for attendees to experience the city of Portland through the senses of taste, touch and sound. Those activities include indoor rock climbing, a walking food tour of downtown and a tactile art exhibit tour at the Portland Art Museum. This itinerary has been put together with blind and visually impaired visitors in mind to create a tactile experience of Portland.

The reunion agenda on Saturday, October 19 features varying educational breakout sessions focused on support for GDB alumni as well as hosted group discussions for their friends and family members. Some of these sessions include a quality of life workshop hosted by the OHSU Casey Eye Institute, a discussion for sighted attendees on ways to support their blind or visually impaired friend or family member and a beginners guide to identifying North American bird songs.

The packed Saturday will end with a red carpet celebration. Participants will also enjoy a screening of the IFC-produced documentary film Pick of the Litter, which follows a litter of GDB puppies on their journey to become trained guide dogs. The screening will be followed by a talkback with GDB’s CEO and one of the stars of the film, GDB Class Supervisor Melanie Harris. The film will be shown in anticipation of the upcoming Disney-produced documentary TV series of the same name.

“Our alumni reunion events are always very special to us,” says GDB President and CEO Christine Benninger. “We have the opportunity to come together as a community to learn, have fun, experience a new city and, most importantly, celebrate the life-changing mission of Guide Dogs for the Blind. Our staff has outdone themselves this year, and I know our attendees will be impressed with the array of unique activities and sessions taking place providing new and different ways to experience the city of Portland.”

GDB has a Portland area campus in nearby Boring, Oregon. Various GDB events take place at the Boring campus throughout the year, as well as campus tours and graduations that are open to the public. Interested members of the public can find more information on the nonprofit’s Boring campus tours and graduations at guidedogs.com/meet-gdb/campus-tours-graduations.

Great River Technology becomes a SOSA member

Great River Technology (GRT) announces its membership with Sensor Open Systems Architecture (SOSA).

GRT, the global leader in ARINC 818 and HOTLink II™ products, announced their membership with the SOSA consortium further deepening industry-wide relationships and leveraging the proven pedigree of ARINC 818 in the cockpit to other high-speed sensors and components that require a robust, low-latency, high bandwidth transport protocol.

The SOSA Consortium is creating open system reference architectures applicable to military and commercial sensor systems and a business model that balances stakeholder interests. The architectures employ modular design and use widely supported, consensus-based, non-proprietary standards. Originally an initiative under The Open Group FACE™ Consortium, the SOSA Consortium enables government and industry to collaboratively develop open standards and best practices to enable, enhance, and accelerate the deployment of affordable, capable, interoperable sensor systems.

“Originally, ARINC 818 was intended for cockpit displays. In the last few years, we have seen the protocol adopted for cameras, heads-up displays, enhanced vision and degraded environment displays, and now high-speed EOIR and radar applications. The features that make ARINC 818 good for cockpit displays such as robust error checking, low-overhead and low latency, and high bandwidth, along with a proven pedigree with millions of hours in hundreds of aircraft make it ideal for sensors. We are looking forward to working with SOSA and its members to evaluate if ARINC 818 makes sense to be part of the standard.” says Paul Grunwald, Chief Systems Architect at GRT.

Future of Laser Innovations Reflected at Revamped ICALEO Conference

A meeting of laser industry experts and decision-makers from around the world, the event hosted dialogue with a deeper industry foci, more expansive technical sessions, and a new Business Conference that addressed laser end-users while highlighting solutions from the manufacturing community.

The Laser Institute (LIA)’s 38th International Congress on Applications of Lasers & Electro-Optics (ICALEO) was recently held in Orlando, Florida and featured the conference’s many firsts. A meeting of laser industry experts and decision-makers from around the world, the event hosted dialogue with a deeper industry foci, more expansive technical sessions, and a new Business Conference that addressed laser end-users while highlighting solutions from the manufacturing community.

A collection of Live User Solutions Forums, Market Drivers Symposia, and Live User Solutions Round Tables discussions, the Business Conference acted as a complement to ICALEO’s traditional Technical Conference. Regarded as a concentrated effort of participants from the Aerospace, Biomedical, Microelectronics, and Automotive industries, ICALEO’s Business sessions allowed laser manufacturers, integrators, and end-users to engage in the discussion on the unique challenges and revolutionary applications in the industry.

To further emphasize the attendee-friendly approach of this year’s ICALEO format, the Business Conference also presented a four-day tradeshow that connected all members of the laser marketplace. An accomplishment at dedicating whole days to each of its selected industries, the tradeshow hosted over 40 international exhibitors from the likes of IPG Photonics, II-VI, and more.

Spanning the duration of the conference to maximize the attendee’s opportunity to network with these leading brands, the assembly of exhibitors also included Han’s Laser Smart Equipment Group (ICALEO’s Diamond Sponsor), Coherent Inc. (ICALEO’s Platinum Sponsor), as well as TRUMPF Inc., Kentek, and Edgewave (ICALEO’s Gold Sponsors).

Meanwhile, the ICALEO Technical Conference enhanced its focus on the innovative and novel uses of lasers and photonics via its subdivided tracks. These are comprised of the Laser Additive Manufacturing, Laser Materials Macroprocessing, Laser Materials Microprocessing, Laser Nanomanufacturing, and Battery Systems and Energy Conversion tracks.

An approach that allowed the conference speakers to deliberate on how laser applications can push the envelope of modern technology while advancing key industries in their accuracy, efficiency, and speed, the Technical Conference’s new format also gave engineers and materials processing experts the chance to discover new processing techniques, acquire new skills, and collaborate to ensure their organization stays up-to-date and on the leading edge of productivity.

These innovations and advancements were envisioned in the opening addresses of the plenary speakers from all four industries. Peter Boeijink of XYREC opened the aerospace-focused conference with his speech on “The Largest, Highest-Power, Mobile, Industrial, Laser Materials Processing Robot in the World” while Dr. Christoph Leyens from Fraunhofer IWS discussed the “Innovative Aerospace and Space Structures Made by Additive Manufacturing.”

Similarly, the esteemed Professor William Steen presented his speech “The Coming of the Age of Optical Engineering” during the biomedical conference, alongside Fraunhofer Institute of Laser Technology (ILT)’s Dr. Nadine Nottrodt who spoke on “Laser in Biofabrication – How Laser Technology Can Help to Build Artificial Tissue.” They were joined by Dr. Chris Bashur of the Florida Institute of Technology who elaborated on the “Photonic Needs in Regenerative Medicine.”

Participants from the microelectronics industry mulled over the words of Dr. Kumar Patel of Pranalytica Inc. during his plenary speech on “Recapturing the Excitement of High Power Infrared Lasers,” while Dr. Markus Arendt of SUSS MicroTec Photonic Systems spoke on the “Excimer Laser Ablation for High-Density Routing in Advanced Packaging.”

During the automotive-focused conference, Ethan Sprague from the University of Michigan presented his thoughts on “Laser Aided Manufacturing: Atom to Automobile” before Dr. Ted Reutzel of Pennsylvania State University described the “Progress Towards Sensing and Mitigating Flaw Formation in Powder Bed Fusion Additive Manufacturing.” Their presentations joined the observations on “Bottoms Up Digital Design: The Quiet Revolution of the Additive Manufacturing Age” by Dr. Jason Carroll of Eaton, a power-management company that provides energy-efficient solutions to managing electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical power.

To view the highlighted content from ICALEO 2019, including recorded interviews, panels, and speeches, follow LIA’s social media profiles on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. The 39th ICALEO will be held at the McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago, Illinois USA from Oct 19, 2020–Oct 22, 2020. Call for papers and Tradeshow booth bookings will be made available soon, and interested parties may contact icaleo@lia.org for further information.

Whealthcare Planning Announces New Industry Award, Board Member and Capital Raise

Whealthcare Planning, the industry’s only technology platform focused on the intersection of health, aging and finance, announced today growing momentum for the company and its technology, along and a corresponding capital raise to fund its increasing opportunities.

Whealthcare Planning, the industry’s only technology platform focused on the intersection of health, aging and finance, announced today growing momentum for the company and its technology, along and a corresponding capital raise to fund its increasing opportunities.

At the recently held wealthmanagement.com’s Industry Awards Program, Whealthcare Planning was recognized for Technology Thought Leadership for its Whealthcare Academy and Education Center. This prestigious award comes on top of the recognition Whealthcare planning also garnered at the Investment News Innovation Awards.

“We are gratified by the momentum of the Whealthcare Planning tools. Nearly 100 investment advisory firms are now using the tools to simplify interactions with aging investors, support advisors and introduce appropriate services,” said Chris Heye, CEO of Whealthcare Planning, “As the Baby Boomers age, they tend to consolidate assets and the Whealthcare Planning tools facilitate the greater trust needed to earn that consolidation.”

Whealthcare Planning is also excited to announce the appointment of Suzanne Siracuse, the CEO and Founder of Suzanne Siracuse Consulting, her newly launched consulting firm and the former CEO and Publisher of InvestmentNews, as a Board member and Strategic Advisor. Siracuse will leverage her industry knowledge and her strategic business and marketing skill set to help Whealthcare with a variety of growth-related initiatives. “We are delighted to welcome Suzanne to the Whealthcare Planning Board as she will immediately bring a wealth of knowledge and insight,” said Heye.

“The financial planning needs for families with aging members have never been more visible and critical in our society,” said Siracuse. I have been incredibly impressed with what the Whealthcare Planning tools provide advisors and I am looking forward to helping the Whealthcare team share their story.”

As a result of this growing momentum, Whealthcare Planning is announcing a capital raise to accelerate its growth in the enterprise financial advice sector, a large marketplace of financial advisors that includes insurance companies, independent broker-dealers, trust companies and banks.

“We’ve had tremendous interest from the executive suite of these enterprise wealth management firms to help them come up with a technology solution to enable scale across their thousands of financial advisors when it comes to these critical health and wealth issues,” said Heye. “This capital raise will allow us to invest in the integrations and service needed to support our advisor clients as demand grows for using the tools. We are still early in the adoption of support for engaging older investors and their families, so our timing is very good to expand our operations, invest in top technology development talent, while increasing our sales and marketing presence.”

Later this month, Whealthcare Planning will be exhibiting and demonstrating its technology solutions at the upcoming Technology Tools for Today (T3) Enterprise conference in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, October 28-30, 2019.

Thought Technology to Exhibit at AASP Conference – Oct. 23-26, 2019 in Portland, OR

peak performance, physiology

Imagine if you could measure the effect negative thoughts and emotions have on an athlete’s physiology, then be able to alter that effect.

It has long been the practice that training programs for elite and professional athletes include a mental component designed to keep athletes “in the zone” in order to deliver their best performance. But, how do you know when you’re there? Imagine if you could measure the effect negative thoughts and emotions have on an athlete’s physiology, then be able to alter that effect.

Thought Technology’s peak performance physiology training product line involves the use of equipment that monitors a variety of physiological signals and feeds this information back to a computer where the data is displayed in real time. Athletes can see how their body reacts to emotions and stress and can learn how to control these reactions thereby reducing the effect they have on performance. During training, athletes learn to achieve a state of optimal focus and control and, more importantly, learn how to access that state when they need to.

A leader in the field, Thought Technology’s instrumentation has a long history of use by top tier football clubs, as well as by individuals and teams around the world for peak performance training in sports such as tennis, hockey, baseball, skating, skiing and F1 racing. The company was recently invited to attend the Fifth Edition of the exclusive Aspire Academy Global Summit on Football Performance & Science in Doha, Qatar where its representatives had the opportunity to highlight the many benefits of using its physiological monitoring systems for peak performance training.

Visit Thought Technology at AASP booth #2 and have the opportunity to meet Lucas Borgo, Peak Performance Product Manager, who will be demonstrating how its instrumentation delivers anxiety response control, mental acuity and fast recovery – all critical tools in top level athletic performance.

What Types Of Vehicles Are Usually Not Insured By Standard Carriers

News Image

“Not all vehicles can be insured by standard insurance companies. Check the exceptions,” said Russell Rabichev, Marketing Director of Internet Marketing Company.

Discount—auto—insurance.com has released a new blog post that explains what types of vehicles are not insured by standard carriers.

For more info and free quotes, visit http://discount—auto—insurance.com/what-types-of-vehicles-cannot-be-insured-by-standard-auto-insurance-providers/

The huge variety of vehicles means that not all of them can be insured by a standard carrier. Insuring an ambulance is totally different than insuring a mid-size family car. Nevertheless, having auto insurance is important for any driver. Getting online car insurance quotes, via http://www.discount—auto—insurance.com/ will help drivers find the best coverage.

  • Location is very important to insurance carriers. Many insurance companies do not provide coverage to companies and individuals that garage their vehicles in certain areas. Obviously, we are talking about areas with high car theft rates, ongoing riots and numerous cases of vandalism. Furthermore, agencies may not provide coverage to businesses with a foreign contact address.
  • Exotic, antique and exhibition vehicles are usually insured by specialized agencies. They have a high market value and they need special coverage.
  • Extreme sports and off-road vehicles. The reason is quite simple: the driver is putting his life in danger more often than other drivers. Also, some of these vehicles tend to be very expensive, especially the customized one.
  • Transport vehicles. Double-deckers and wheelchair busses are just 2 examples, but there are many types of transport vehicles which will not be insured by standard carriers.
  • Military vehicles. These are insured by insurance companies specialized in insuring active and former military personnel.

Compare-autoinsurance.org is an online provider of life, home, health, and auto insurance quotes. In this way, clients have access to offers from multiple carriers all in one place: this website. If we are not the right choice, we will help them to find an appropriate program.”

UCI Alcohol and Other Drug Awareness Week will occur the week starting 10/21/19. The event features a number of sessions for students, including Q&A with Addiction Experts, Informational Seminars, and Experiential Learning Activities. More information can be found or addiction help obtained by contacting the UCI Center for Student Wellness & Health Promotion. UCI students are encouraged to ask for help for themselves or other students who may have a problem with drugs or alcohol.
