Florida’s Response to Annual Sugar Cane Burning Fails to Protect Affected Residents; Fails to Address the True Problem

Russell Berman of The Berman Law Group, which has filed a class action lawsuit against sugar growers in federal court on behalf of western Palm Beach County residents, releases this statement after Commissioner of Agriculture Nikki Fried announced changes to pre-harvest sugar field burning protocols:

“For six months out of every year, sugar growers burn tens of thousands of acres of sugar cane fields in western Palm Beach County and adjoining areas, releasing vast quantities of pollutants and harmful compounds into the air for days at a time. Nearby residents even have a name for the toxic ash: “black snow.” Black snow carries for miles, blanketing homes in communities such as Belle Glade and South Bay, diminishing property values and raising the risks of long-term health effects for residents.

The Commissioner’s announcement to require “an 80-acre buffer between a burn and wild lands on dry, windy days” does not address two fundamental issues: First, pre-harvest burning is an archaic method that can and should be banned all together; and second, a buffer between burns and wild lands still does not address the toxic ash still being dumped on affected residential areas.

Alternative clean, non-burning “green” sugar cane harvesting methods have existed for decades, but sugar producers have failed or refused to embrace them. Other sugar producing countries, such as Brazil, have banned pre-harvest burns, and studies have shown that green methods actually increase harvest yields after a short adjustment period.

The big sugar companies, despite their huge profits, simply do not want to spend the money to convert to green methods, which comes at a high property value and human cost to affected residents in communities that lack the economic and political clout to fight back.

The Commissioner’s other promise, that the state will consider the air quality index before authorizing a burn, also ignores the bigger picture here: The toxic micro-sized particulate matter given off by the burns is in itself harmful to residents in the miles-long and wide path of the black snow, becoming embedded deep in the lungs, regardless of the air quality index.

The Berman Law Group fully supports the efforts of the Sierra Club’s Stop Pre-harvest Sugar Field Burning Campaign, and the efforts of the Everglades Foundation to bring attention to this unjust situation. The wealthier sections of eastern Palm Beach County have been able to enforce wind restrictions during burn season that prevent the toxic ash from falling on their communities. But those restrictions mean that the poorer communities to the west — Belle Glade, South Bay, Pahokee, Indiantown, Clewiston and Ortona — bear the brunt of the “black snow” phenomenon.

The Berman Law Group looks forward to fighting for the rights of these poorer and underserved communities as it pursues the big sugar growers in federal court in an effort to stop the archaic and unnecessary pre-harvest burns once and for all.

The case, currently pending in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida before Judge Rodney Smith, is titled: Clover Coffie, et al. v. U.S. Sugar Company, et al., Case No. 9:19-cv-80730.

“Always With Me”: a heartfelt account in the life of Moses Macias who, for 21 years, lived in and out of the hospital fighting for his life, while also growing up with the traumas of bullying and abuse and mental illness. “Always With Me” is the creation of published author Moses Macias, a writer born with spina bifida and cleft lip as a child. Growing up, he had to deal with the hardship that comes with being born disabled. He would struggle with depression, drug addictions, suicide, sexual abuse, medical abuse, and the physical pain that comes with surgeries.

Despite all these, he would find comfort in God and surrender his life to Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior.

Macias shares, “Always With Me is a true story about the life of Moses Macias as he grew up in and out of the hospital for twenty-one years. He was born with spina bifida and cleft lip. As a result, he would have to endure dozens of surgeries as he would fight for his life growing up. Always With Me also details other struggles of growing up disabled such as bullying, depression, suicide, medical abuse, sexual abuse, and pain of receiving medical treatment throughout his life. Waggl is honored to be recognized by the San Francisco Business Times, alongside some of the most successful and well-respected companies in the Bay Area

“Waggl is dedicated to making work more human for our employees and our clients, and we pride ourselves on building our organization from the inside out with an emphasis on our culture and employee experiences,” said Michael Papay, Co-founder and CEO, Waggl.

Waggl, the leading platform for real-time feedback powered by Employee Voice, today announced that it has earned a spot on the San Francisco Business Times’ Fast 100 list, placing #15 of the 100 fastest-growing private companies in the Bay Area.

“Waggl is dedicated to making work more human for our employees and our clients, and we pride ourselves on building our organization from the inside out with an emphasis on our culture and employee experiences,” said Michael Papay, Co-founder and CEO, Waggl. “We believe if we do those things well, it translates into a great product, trustworthy brand, superior customer focus, and ultimately strong performance and shareholder return. We are honored to be recognized by the San Francisco Business Times, alongside some of the most successful and well-respected companies in the Bay Area, and we view this accolade as another significant validation of the value of elevating Employee Voice in the workplace.”

Every year the Business Times puts together a list of the fastest growing private companies in the Bay Area, including privately held companies headquartered in the Bay Area, which is defined as Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco and San Mateo counties, and the city of Palo Alto. The 2019 list ranks the Bay Area’s fastest-growing private companies by percent growth in net revenue from 2016 to 2018. The companies on the list span a diverse mix of industries — many from the tech world, but also construction and design, real estate, financial services, biotech, advertising, consulting, consumer products and retail.

Waggl was recently ranked 151 on the 2019 Inc. 5000 list of the fastest growing private companies in the United States, with three-year revenue growth of 2482 percent, placing 26 within California-based companies, 19 within software companies, and 10 within San Francisco companies. The company was named as “Employee Engagement Vendor of the Year” by the 2019 North American Employee Engagement Awards, recognized as a Top Workplace of 2019 by the Bay Area Newsgroup, and by San Francisco Business Times/Silicon Valley Business Journal as one of the Best Places to Work, earning the #2 ranking for wellness and the #10 spot for smallest companies.

Waggl catalyzes real-time actionable dialogue by crowdsourcing and prioritizing Employee Voice around critical business topics like culture transformation, strategy alignment and employee experience. Waggl delivers actionable insights to leaders, managers and teams by ensuring that individual voices are heard, and by building engagement and cultural alignment through meaningful inclusion and participation in a transparent dialogue.

In order to keep pace with the constant change and other challenges that come with rapid growth, Waggl maintains a strong focus on building an agile culture and great employee experience by providing a work environment in which all individuals are treated fairly and respectfully and can contribute fully to the organization’s success. Waggl believes that creating an open, transparent forum where people can participate in important discussions about their own workplace leads to greater engagement and productivity, a shared sense of purpose, and a clearer path of action.

“We can’t imagine a better place to grow our business than the San Francisco Bay Area,” said Alex Kinnebrew, CMO and Head of Strategy, Waggl. “Waggl’s employee experience resources and initiatives are focused on making life better by embracing health and wellness as a core value throughout the company, regardless of whether they are at our headquarters in Sausalito or working remotely. For example, we regularly take one-on-one meetings walking on a path around a beautiful marina, rather than sitting in the conference room all day. We have a partnership with a unique local wellness center next to our office that offers fitness, yoga, meditation, kayak rentals, and other classes. Where else could we do that?”

2020 iaedp™ Symposium Offers Self-Expression through Art Competition

“The art submissions are as unique as the art competition itself,” says Blanche Williams, MS and Director of International Development at the iaedp™ Foundation. “The artists’ allow outsiders to see inside their emotional selves.”

Studies involving eating disorders have revealed that emotional repression is linked to higher reports of medical challenges. Through a unique art competition sponsored annually by the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals (iaedp™), artists are given the opportunity of self-expression by pushing the boundaries of form, structure and identity through visual, 3-dimensional and mixed media as well as poetry, spoken word and dance/performance.

The art competition is themed is “Imagine Me Beyond What You See” and held during the annual iaedp™ Symposium. At next year’s conference in Orlando at the Omni at ChampionsGate, March 26-29, the top five art finalists are showcased and the winner is revealed. Entries are currently being accepted through December 15, 2019.

“Imagine Me Beyond What You See” originally was designed to promote a healthy awareness and acceptance of body images. That focus has been nurtured over the 10-year span that the special art competition has been conducted. The art contest is open to everyone; however, iaedp™ asks treatment centers and private practices with art therapists to work with patients to provide entries.

“The art submissions are as unique as the art competition itself,” says Blanche Williams, MS and Director of International Development at the iaedp™ Foundation. “The artists’ allow outsiders to see inside their emotional selves. Each contest entry communicates powerful themes and reveals courageous individuals.”

Entries must include a 300-word description/inspiration along with a two to three sentence biography of the artist or group. A list of materials/content must be provided along with a submission of four photos of the art form in high (300+) resolution jpeg format that shows at least four different angles. Photos will be enlarged, so quality is important. Poetry and/or spoken word should be submitted in writing and/or one to two minute You Tube video link. Dance/performance must be submitted in one to two minute You Tube video link. All entries require signing an artist release.

The Lead Sponsorship for the 2020 “Imagine Me Beyond What You See” is still open for organizations which are interested in helping to support the competition. For more details contact blanche@iaedp.com.

The “Imagine Me Beyond What You See” awards ceremony, scheduled during the 2020 iaedp™ Symposium, will include the Professionals’ Choice Award, which is selected through voting by iaedp™ membership, 2020 Symposium attendees and the general public.

The Best Ways To Obtain Cheaper Auto Insurance Premiums

News Image

“It is possible to get cheaper car insurance, but there are strict rules to follow,” said Russell Rabichev, Marketing Director of Internet Marketing Company.

Compare-autoinsurance.org has released a new blog post that presents successful strategies for getting cheap car insurance!

For more info and free car insurance quotes online, visit https://compare-autoinsurance.org/how-to-make-car-insurance-rates-cheaper/

Like any other major investments, auto insurance tends to be expensive. It may cost several thousands of dollars, depending on the insured vehicle and the driving history of the policyholder. Saving even 10% of that value will give policyholders a considerable amount of money. Drivers should use http://compare-autoinsurance.org to get free quotes and compare prices.

Policyholders should try the following strategies for lowering insurance costs:

  • Increase deductibles to a comfortable limit. Collision and comprehensive coverage require deductibles before the insurer handles the claim. A high deductible means more financial responsibility assumed by the policyholder. Insurance companies will lower the costs. However, it is recommended to carefully choose a financially comfortable deductible level.
  • Do not buy medical coverage, unless needed or required by the state. Buying PIP and Medicare car coverage is not crucial if the policyholder has a solid health insurance plan. Just buy the minimum PIP if required by the state.
  • Check for a discount list. Each insurance company has some discounts to offer. Ask an insurance representative to provide a list of available discounts and prerequisites for each of them. The most common discounts include low mileage, safety gear, multi-car insurance, loyalty, and no-claim bonus.
  • Keep the insurer updated with all major life changes. The insurance company may not be aware that some major aspects of the client’s life have changed. Getting married, working from home and retiring are very influential for insurance premiums.

Compare-autoinsurance.org is an online provider of life, home, health, and auto insurance quotes. This website is unique because it does not simply stick to one kind of insurance provider, but brings the clients the best deals from many different online insurance carriers. In this way, clients have access to offers from multiple carriers all in one place: this website. On this site, customers have access to quotes for insurance plans from various agencies, such as local or nationwide agencies, brand names insurance companies, etc.
