Student Safe Driving Contest Saves Lives and Pays Off for Students

www.createrealimpact.com

Winners of the 2019 Fall Create Real Impact Contest have been announced.

We continue to support this important initiative because it saves lives.

Driving safely shouldn’t be scary. This Halloween, messages to prevent distracted driving are paying off for students across the country, in the 2019 Fall Create Real Impact contest from Impact Teen Drivers and California Casualty. A total of $12,000 is being awarded for artistic efforts to educate others about the dangers of distractions behind the wheel. The awards were announced in conjunction with National Teen Driver Safety Week, a reminder to all, especially young drivers, to keep hands on the wheel, eyes on the road and the mind focused on the drive.

The following students were chosen for $1,500 grand prize educational grants:

  • Brad Kendrick, Logan, UT, in the video category for “Drive Safe Mate!”
  • Everen Graves, San Diego, CA, in the music category for the song “For You and I”
  • Lilly Millard, Hockessin, DE, in the writing category for the prose “A Great Multitasker”
  • Kendal Johnson, Cumberland, MD, in the art category for the poster “The Get Settled Campaign”

The schools with the most entries were Village Academy High School in Pomona, California; Cab Calloway School of the Arts in Wilmington, DE; and Our Lady of Lourdes Academy in Miami, FL. Each school is being awarded $1,000.

Five hundred dollar awards for the most online votes are going to: Montana Schrader, Allendale, MI, for the poem, “No Worries;” Yoosung Jung, Yorba Linda, CA, for the video, “Alternative Reality;” Helen Dang, Pomona, CA, for the poster, “Distractions Are Deadly;” and Katie Panyanouvong, Fremont, CA, for the song, “At the Stoplight,” written about a friend who died from a reckless driver.

The Create Real Impact Contest challenges students ages 14-22 to make a difference in the battle to stop unnecessary crashes, the number one killer of teens in the United States. Students across the nation entered creative works showcasing solutions to reckless and distracted driving at http://www.createrealimpact.com.

The equation is simple: teen drivers are more likely to be involved in a deadly crash caused by texting, interacting with passengers or just not paying attention behind the wheel, but they are the best messengers to their peers about the dangers of inattentive driving.

The Create Real Impact contest was initiated in 2009 as a proactive solution to the deadly epidemic of inattentive driving by teens. Research shows distraction is a key factor in almost 60 percent of crashes involving drivers ages 16 to 19. Empowering messages convincing other teens to adopt safer driving attitudes and avoid the tragic result of bad choices behind the wheel can save lives.

“I have confidence teens can change the culture of driving to one that is distraction-free – much like earlier generations did with seat belts,” said Kelly Browning, Ph.D., Executive Director, Impact Teen Drivers. “The Create Real Impact Contest provides an opportunity for teens to lead the conversation by getting involved and stopping the number one killer of people their age.”

“We continue to support this important initiative because it saves lives,” said California Casualty Chairman of the Board, Beau Brown, who is also a member of the Impact Teen Drivers Board of Directors.

The winning entries can be viewed at http://www.createrealimpact.com.

Impact Teen Drivers has reached more than two million teens since 2007 and the Create Real Impact contest began in 2009. California Casualty is a founding partner of the nonprofit and continues to provide support for the contest. California Casualty representatives will help present checks to the winning schools and awardees.

Students can get started now for the 2020 Spring Create Real Impact Contest, which will begin in January. For more information on how to get schools and students involved, please contact info@impactteendrivers.org.

New PAHRC Research Shows That Children Living in Assisted Homes Are Starting a Step Behind Their Low-Income, Unassisted Peers on the Road to Educational Success

Access to the internet and books, enrichment activities, learning supports such as eyeglasses and nutritious meals, and programs tailored to children who have learning disabilities or special needs can help assisted children overcome some of the obstacles they face.

Public and affordable housing programs provide housing stability to low-income families and serve our most vulnerable populations—those groups that face the greatest challenges, like poor health, domestic upheaval, and under-developed labor market skills, as well as financial setbacks. New research by the Public and Affordable Housing Research Corporation (PAHRC) shows that children whose parents seek out and receive housing assistance are already facing more barriers to educational success, on average, than their low-income, unassisted peers.

The study, titled “A Platform to Learn: How Housing Programs Can Support the Educational Needs of Children Living in Publicly Supported Housing,” showed that children living in homes made affordable through public programs have higher rates of learning disabilities, ADHD, developmental delays, and emotional disturbances, as well as higher rates of illnesses like asthma, and higher rates of potential environmental stressors that can detract from educational achievement. They also have less access to quality schools, the internet, and enrichment activities that support better learning outcomes than do their low-income, unassisted peers.

The study authors found that the main barriers holding housing-assisted children back are learning disabilities and related conditions, environmental stressors, food insecurity, and a lack of access to educational tools and enrichment opportunities.

Despite these barriers, the research also found that housing assistance is linked to fewer school absences, better healthcare access, and higher rates of parental involvement in school for children living in publicly supported homes compared to their low-income, unassisted peers.

Housing providers can help improve the educational outcomes of more children who reside on their properties by working with community partners to offer assistance that targets the barriers these children face. “Access to the internet and books, enrichment activities, learning supports such as eyeglasses and nutritious meals, and programs tailored to children who have learning disabilities or special needs can help assisted children overcome some of the obstacles they face,” said Keely Stater, Ph.D., PAHRC’s Director of Research and Industry Intelligence and the study’s lead author. “Programs that help parents navigate their children’s educational experience, like those that facilitate connections with schools or with behavioral health professionals who deal with learning disabilities, and those that can connect students to opportunities they may not have access to can also help more assisted students succeed.”

Rockler Introduces New Wireless Speaker Kit Ahead of Gift-Making Season

Rockler introduces new wireless speaker kit ahead of gift-making season

“This wireless speaker kit makes it easy to design and build a one-of-a-kind gift that any music-lover will enjoy long beyond the holidays.” -Steve Krohmer, Rockler VP for Product Development

Rockler Woodworking and Hardware has introduced a new wireless speaker kit that makes it easy to craft a customized, rechargeable mini-speaker that plays audio from Bluetooth®-enabled devices – an ideal project for a personalized holiday gift.

The Rockler Wireless Speaker Kit (https://www.rockler.com/rockler-wireless-speaker-kit-with-playback-volume-controls) features easy-to-connect, color-coded electrical components that mount in 1-7/8″ diameter holes – allowing users to build a small box or case from the material of their choice or to simply drill a hole in an eye-catching piece of wood. It incorporates an upgraded control panel that includes full playback and volume controls, as well as a 3.5mm auxiliary input jack for connecting another device.

To give users a starting point for their project, Rockler has developed a free downloadable plan for making a small speaker box with corner accents created with Rockler’s Corner Key Doweling Jig (https://go.rockler.com/plans/dowel-speaker-box-plan-lr.pdf).

“The most treasured gifts often are ones with a personal touch,” said Steve Krohmer, Rockler’s vice president for product development. “This wireless speaker kit makes it easy to design and build a one-of-a-kind gift that any music-lover will enjoy long beyond the holidays.”

The kit includes a speaker unit, a control unit and a USB charging cable. Wiring is as simple as snapping the connectors of color-coded wires from the speaker unit into color-coded ports on the control unit. A sleek black bezel on the outside of both units hides any small irregularities in the mounting holes.

The Rockler Wireless Speaker Kit (57033) retails for $29.99 and can be purchased exclusively online at http://www.rockler.com or at Rockler Woodworking and Hardware stores nationwide, as well as through the Rockler catalog. For store locations or a free catalog, visit http://www.rockler.com or call 1-877-ROCKLER.

NOLS Announces Winter Wilderness Travel Adventures for Adults that Teach Serious Outdoor Skills from Patagonia to Wyoming Backcountry

https://www.prweb.com/

Travelers gain sea kayaking skills navigating Patagonia’s coastline and immerse in local culture on NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) 14-day expedition (photo by Jordan Cranch/NOLS).

This winter, NOLS is challenging adults with an array of skill-building expeditions, including kayaking on Chile’s coastal fjords.

Experience has become a travel must-have in recent years with immersive travel topping trend lists. “The hottest souvenir to bring back from a trip is a new skill … enriching [travelers’] lives beyond the trip,” TripAdvisor declared in its 2019 trend report, while Conde Nast Traveler coined the name “Intrepid Journeys” for these “more challenging adventures” characterized by “embracing fears, experiencing discomfort and taking on ambitious physical activities.” And where better to search out the ultimate in transformative, experiential travel adventure than NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School), the leader in wilderness education for more than 50 years.

This winter, NOLS is challenging adults with an array of skill-building expeditions, including the opportunity to escape grey cityscapes for blue waters while kayaking on Chile’s coastal fjords. The 14-day Patagonia Sea Kayaking Expedition is one NOLS adventure geared toward individuals 23 years and older. Offered Feb. 21- Mar. 5, 2020, the course not only transforms beginners into confident paddlers, but will also help develop leadership abilities and cultural competency.

This immersive travel opportunity unlocks some of Chile’s wildest landscapes to explore, including Patagonia’s lush temperate rainforest, abundant waterfalls and even glimpses of the distant glaciers that carved this spectacular region. Knowledgeable instructors help travelers master the fundamentals of paddling. And as the course makes its way along the coast, travelers will also have the opportunity to visit coastal communities and learn about their way of life – and will leave Chile with sharpened leadership and communication skills as well as an appreciation for the dynamic wind and sea conditions of the area.

Additional adult winter courses provide a variety of available destinations, dates and skills. Also in February, a week-long Baja Coastal Sailing course offers another way to reconnect with the sea in winter. Beginning with the basics, this expedition is perfect for the novice sailor looking to get away from the cold and spend days exploring quiet sea coves and relaxing on a beach under the stars. And the New Zealand Sailing adventure, Nov. 23 – Dec. 6, 2019, offers travelers the opportunity to learn diverse skills in a remote coastal landscape rich with unique-to-New Zealand wildlife. Both courses emphasize sailing skills and seamanship while also helping strengthen leadership, communication and decision-making skills.

For those who’d rather embrace than flee winter’s snow and cold, NOLS offers a 12-day Winter Backcountry Touring Adventure in the mountains of Wyoming with three offerings beginning December 29 and February 2 and 16. Starting at the Grand Targhee Ski resort, travelers learn the basics of avalanche assessment before heading into the backcountry of the Tetons, where skiing or snowboarding on fresh powder and winter ecology are on tap. At night, retreat to yurts and self-built snow shelters.

Although NOLS – founded in 1965 by legendary mountaineer Paul Petzoldt – is perhaps best known for its famously rugged gap-year and travel-abroad expeditions for students, all of these winter trips are part of a series of expeditions called “Prime,” grounded in the same philosophy of building high-level outdoor and leadership skill sets while reveling in personal growth and fun, but designed for adults 23 and over. Tuition for the four winter courses ranges from $2,100 to $5,490 per person for 8- to 14-day adventures.

About NOLS:

NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) is the world’s leading wilderness school. A nonprofit based in Lander, Wyoming, the school provides students the opportunity to step forward – whether on an expedition, wilderness medicine or custom course. Students of all ages graduate from their courses prepared to lead their communities in a changing world. Graduates have a lifelong desire for leadership, commitment to continued skills development, and ongoing education. Since 1965, NOLS has embraced and explored the unknown through outdoor and classroom-based experiences. To learn more about NOLS, call 800.710.6657 or visit http://www.nols.edu.

Fort Washington Medical Center Officially Becomes Part of Adventist HealthCare

News Image

We look forward to strengthening the Medical Center’s presence through facility improvements, outpatient services, as well as expanded physician practices.

Adventist HealthCare, one of the longest-serving health systems in the Washington, D.C. region, announced this week that Fort Washington Medical Center in Prince George’s County is now officially a part of its organization.

Fort Washington Medical Center is a 37-bed hospital located just south of National Harbor in a growing section of the region. It cares for close to 40,000 patients a year in its emergency department and, like Adventist HealthCare, has a strong commitment to serving the needs of their community. In July, Adventist HealthCare and Nexus Health, the previous owner of Fort Washington Medical Center, announced the two organizations had reached an agreement to transfer the medical center.

Given the changes in healthcare both nationally and in Maryland, joining Adventist HealthCare will allow Fort Washington Medical Center to expand its high-quality healthcare services in Prince George’s County and overcome the challenges of operating as a standalone community hospital. Adventist HealthCare will invest $35 million over five years to help the hospital continue to meet the health needs of the community.

“Bringing Fort Washington Medical Center into the Adventist HealthCare family provides opportunities to combine our shared missions of improving the health of Maryland residents,” said Eunmee Shim, President of Fort Washington Medical Center. “We look forward to strengthening the Medical Center’s presence through facility improvements, outpatient services, as well as expanded physician practices.”

Adventist HealthCare, founded in 1907, serves patients throughout the Washington, D.C., region. The organization features a comprehensive spectrum of care including: three acute-care hospitals; two physical rehabilitation hospitals with outpatient locations; physician practices; and services for mental health, home care, imaging and urgent care. It is a regional leader in heart, stroke, physical rehabilitation, cancer, OB, and other medical specialty care.

Whitepaper Illustrates the Important Role Email Validation Plays in the Holiday Retail Season

News Image

Email Validation helps businesses worldwide protect and optimize revenue by ensuring their contacts’ email addresses are genuine, accurate and up-to-date. The result is reduced fraud, higher customer satisfaction and better marketing campaign performance. – Geoff Grow, CEO, Service Objects

Service Objects, the leading provider of real-time global contact validation solutions, has created a free whitepaper, The ROI of Real-Time Email Validation, to help retail marketing and customer service professionals develop effective email marketing practices for the holiday shopping season and beyond.

The holiday season, kicking off with Black Friday and Cyber Monday, is the busiest season for many retailers, with total holiday sales breaking the US $1 trillion mark for the first time last season. Unfortunately, it is also a prime season for fraud, mis-delivery and data errors. This means that it is more important than ever to validate email addresses to make sure they are accurate, deliverable, and do not originate from suspicious or harmful sources. This whitepaper discusses best practices for profitable email marketing, and how automated data quality tools can help.

One such data quality tool is Service Objects’ DOTS Email Validation, a real-time API-based that validates and corrects global email addresses, effectively reducing bounce rates by up to 90 percent. Email Validation fixes common errors, corrects addresses to ensure deliverability and avoid blacklisting, and flags potentially fraudulent addresses as well as known spammers, greylisters and more. By integrating Email Validation with their CRM and marketing automation platform, retailers will significantly improve the ROI of their email marketing efforts.

According to Service Objects’ CEO Geoff Grow, “For many retailers, the holiday season can represent a third or more of total annual sales. Email Validation helps businesses worldwide protect and optimize this revenue by ensuring their contacts’ email addresses are genuine, accurate and up-to-date. The result is reduced fraud, higher customer satisfaction and better marketing campaign performance.”

The ROI of Real-Time Email Validation white paper is now available for download. More information about Service Objects’ Email Validation, including a free trial, can be found on their web site. Retailers can also request a free consultation on their own specific email marketing situation.

About Service Objects

Founded in 2001, Service Objects is the leading provider of contact validation solutions, validating online transactions in real-time, including contact name, address, phone, email and device.
