BGG supports the safety and efficacy of its CO2 Saw Palmetto Extract

BGG has successfully completed and published two clinical trials on its Saw Palmetto extract to support its safety and reconfirm its efficacy. One of the clinical trials was conducted on 44 volunteers who were given BGG’s Saw Palmetto extract or placebo over an eight-week period. The treatment group experienced a statistically significant reduction in urinary issues versus placebo (Kushima et al., 2018). The second clinical trial established safety at 6X the recommended dosage (Sekikawa et al., 2019).

“We are extremely pleased to offer a Saw Palmetto extract that has been proven efficacious and safe through peer-reviewed human research,” said Yanmei Li, PhD, BGG’s Chief Scientific Officer. “BGG prides itself not only on producing products with industry-leading quality, but also on sponsoring clinical research to validate our products’ ability to positively affect consumers’ health. This combination of top quality and clinical validation has been extremely well-received by leading brands in the market for our other products, and we look forward to similar success in the Saw Palmetto category.”

BGG’s Global Chief Marketing Officer and CEO of BGG Europe Christian Artaria observed, “The Saw Palmetto market has been in turmoil recently due to a series of poor harvests, which have added additional costs to an already costly manual harvesting. As a consequence, adulteration with inexpensive food-based oils or with blends of lipids that mimic the phytochemical profile of a genuine Serenoa extract has been rampant. At BGG we offer to the market genuine, safe and clinically-supported products, and the new studies performed on our CO2 Saw Palmetto extract come at the perfect time.”

Chiromatic Announces First-of-its-Kind Innovative Sleep Technology

https://www.prweb.com/

The Chiromatic Vitality Mattress

“By combining unparalleled research with German-engineered dimensional textiles, we have developed a clinical-grade technology and a luxury experience, all in one,” explained Bart Zoni, Managing Partner.

Chiromatic, a Chiropractor- approved sleep innovation company, today announced the world’s first mattress to use LoomAir 3DTM technology.

The original pioneers of Chiropractic mattresses have re-launched their line with a revolutionary new technology that will mean better sleep for the 45 million Americans who suffer from back and neck pain. As the trailblazer in specific chiropractic mattress design since 1977, Chiromatic has continued to look for revolutionary ways to bring better products to their network of doctors and customers.

“We discovered that mattresses have not really evolved over the past 40 years.” stated Bart Zoni, Managing Partner. “We recognized the need for a sleep line that provides health benefits along with desired comfort and luxury.”

With the newest generation of Chiromatic mattresses using LoomAir 3D technology, Chiromatic has addressed the problems of traditional beds and can better meet the needs of those suffering from back and neck pain. Contrary to traditional beds and memory foams, which create more resistance as one sleeps, LoomAir 3D technology distributes pressure evenly to rid of any unwanted “hot spots” on the body and puts a stop to uneven lumbar support.

“We looked to the aerospace, medical device, and automotive technologies to find our inspiration,” explained Zoni. “By combining unparalleled research with German-engineered dimensional textiles, we have developed a clinical-grade technology and a luxury experience, all in one.”

The 3-dimensional fabrics provide a surface-body interface that is supportive throughout, but soft at the pressure points, adapting to any sleep position. Available in their new Vitality mattress, these 3D “spacer” fabrics have two faces separated by millions of tiny filaments, providing the support of over 3 million fibers to resemble the feeling of floating on air.

Vitality Mattress

Experience the healing power of sleep with Chiromatic’s advanced, proprietary support technology for those with back and neck pain. Comprised of non-toxic materials and compatible with adjustable bases, the exclusive patent pending technology available in this bed delivers:

  • A unique feeling of weightlessness and reduced point pressure
  • Disruption-free motion for an ideal partner bed
  • Even weight distribution and adaptive support for optimal alignment of the spine
  • Increased airflow for optimal temperature control

“We believe a bed should be more than a piece of bedroom furniture – it should be the centerpiece of a healthy lifestyle,” explained Deb Pearce, Partner. “This technology marks a new era at Chiromatic that speaks to who we are as a company and is a direct reflection of the value we deliver to our clients – scientific, luxurious and technologically advanced.”

Taking a new and improved health-first approach, Chiromatic’s revitalized mission has evolved to promote the notion that sleep and health are one in the same. Their new line of mattresses and pillows are proven to improve the quality of sleep and specifically support those that live an active lifestyle. Products are available through a Chiropractor network as well as in their Morristown experience center, set to open this fall.

About Chiromatic

Since 1977, Chiromatic Sleep Systems have been designed with and trusted by Chiropractors and can be an important part of a holistic approach to managing back and neck pain. Approaching sleep with a health-first approach, Chiromatic uses the latest in clinical-grade technology, to innovate the mattress industry with sleep systems that address the needs of millions of consumers that experience back and neck pain – and those that just want the most comfortable night’s sleep.

Rosemarie Riddell Bogdan, Esq. Appointed to Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee in National Valsartan NDMA Products Liability Litigation

Rosemarie Riddell Bogdan

On May 6th, 2019, Martin, Harding & Mazzotti, LLP partner, Rosemarie Riddell Bogdan, was appointed to a leadership position on the Plaintiffs’ Personal Injury Steering Committee in the National Valsartan NDMA contamination litigation (IN RE: Valsartan Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2875) pending in federal court in New Jersey.  Ms. Bogdan will serve as the Co-Science Chair on the Plaintiff’s Personal Injury Steering Committee.

The IN RE: Valsartan Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2875 centers around the FDA recalls of Valsartan which began in July of 2018 and have continued throughout 2019. The FDA recall came after 22 other countries issued recalls of over 2,300 Valsartan batches.   Other batches of “sartan” medications, Losartan and Irbesartan, have been added to the FDA recall list.  As of September, 2018, there have been 1,152 individual recalls making this the largest Class 1 drug recall to date.

The medications have been recalled because they contain nitrosamine impurities that don’t meet the FDA’s safety standards. Nitrosamines are organic chemical compounds that are comprised of a nitroso group bonded to an amine.   The nitrosamine impurities that have been found are Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), N-Nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA), and N-Nitroso-N-methyl-4-aminobutyric acid (NMBA).  Most nitrosamines are carcinogenic.  In particular, NDMA, NDEA and NMBA are recognized by the International Agency for Research on Cancer to be carcinogens.  NDMA so reliably causes cancer that it is used to create cancer in rats for cancer research.

Over 2 million Americans have received notices in the mail alerting them of the recalls and their potential exposure to a probable carcinogen. Similar warnings have also been issued by the World Health Organization (WHO), Health Canada, the European Medical Association (EMA), and the Hong Kong Department of Health.

Many lawsuits have been filed by patients across the U.S., for strict products liability, manufacturing defect, negligence, fraud, violation of warranties, and other laws relating to the safe sale and distribution of prescription drugs.  On February 14, 2019, the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) issued a transfer order consolidating valsartan products liability lawsuits in the District of New Jersey.  This process is intended to serve the convenience of the parties, witnesses, and the judicial system, and to reduce duplicative discovery, and avoid conflicting pretrial schedules. Future cases filed by patients claiming injuries caused by the contaminated Valsartan will be transferred or sued directly into the MDL.  This MDL is comprised of both personal injury cases, as well as class actions.  The MDL includes all manufacturers of the recalled valsartan.  A list of the medications that have been recalled can be found on the FDA’s website.

Cognition® Corporation Releases White Paper Upcoming EU Regulation of Medical Devices

Cognition Corporation White Paper: Managing the Transition to EU MDR Regulations

“There’s a lot happening with the EU MDR… By leveraging some of the methods we suggest in this new white paper, we believe that will go a long way in helping these manufacturers streamline the transition.”

Cognition® Corporation, a software company specializing in medical device compliance and commercialization, has just released a new white paper on the upcoming implementation of the European Union’s Medical Device Regulation (EU MDR).

The MDR is a new regulatory framework for the oversight of medical devices submitted to and cleared for market in European Union Member States. Intended to replace the previous Medical Device Directive established in 1993, this new regulation is set to see full implementation in May 2020.

“The transition to this new system of regulatory compliance is going to be a challenge for medical device manufacturers,” says David Cronin, CEO of Cognition Corporation. “We’re releasing this paper in the hopes of helping some organizations understand and prepare for the changes ahead in the European market.”

The new white paper takes a high-level approach to the EU MDR, laying out the basics before diving into certain preparatory methods manufacturers of medical devices can undertake. Strategies such as planning ahead, keeping an eye on device classification, and ensuring robust risk management are reviewed.

“There’s a lot happening with the EU MDR,” says Mr. Cronin, “and even though it was published back in 2017, there are still organizations who have yet to come into compliance before the official implementation date. By leveraging some of the methods we suggest in this new white paper, we believe that will go a long way in helping these manufacturers streamline the transition.”

Mr. Cronin adds that the paper will offer suggestions for meeting the MDR’s robust postmarket surveillance requirements as well. “Just like the FDA, the EU is getting more concerned with the total product lifecycle,” says Mr. Cronin. “By highlighting this in our paper, we hope to bring more awareness, and hopefully give folks a chance to better understand what the EU MDR is all about.”

The white paper is available for download here.

Medicine for Back Pain; What Works and What to be Careful About

https://www.prweb.com/

Dr. Kaixuan Liu

It’s important to understand that while pills and other medicines can help back pain, there’s an array of options. It’s wise to educate yourself on the pros and cons.

When something hurts, it’s natural to want to pop a pill to quickly make the pain go away. But medicine for back pain – depending on the type and how long it’s taken – can come with side effects and potential dangers, according to Kaixuan Liu, MD, PhD, founder and medical director of Atlantic Spine Center.

“Some of the first questions back pain patients ask include, ‘What works? What should I be careful about?’” explains Dr. Liu. “It’s important to understand that while pills and other medicines can help back pain, there’s an array of options. It’s wise to educate yourself on the pros and cons.”

About 8 in 10 American adults will experience back pain at some point, according to the National Institutes of Health. But most of the time, back pain gets better within a few weeks, Dr. Liu says, and remedies such as exercising and applying heat or ice can produce dramatic improvements.

Medicines for back pain should only be considered when the pain is severe or lasting, he advises. “Medication can be a key component of treating or managing an occasional severe backache or dealing with recurring pain, but it’s crucial to use the right medications for your situation and do so in the safest possible way,” Dr. Liu adds.

Medications and what to watch for

Back pain medicine comes in several categories. Here, Dr. Liu explains the choices and what issues and side effects are common with each:

NSAIDs: Over-the-counter versions of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are very popular for back pain and include ibuprofen and naproxen. Prescription versions offer higher doses. While often quite effective in easing pain, NSAIDs are so easy to obtain that many people can use too many. This can lead to side effects such as stomach pain, ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding or kidney damage, Dr. Liu notes.

Muscle relaxants: Useful for acute back pain or muscle spasms, muscle relaxants are available by prescription and include cyclobenzaprine, tizanidine, baclofen and carisoprodol. Regardless of the specific muscle relaxant, however, all can cause drowsiness. “Don’t drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how they’re affecting you,” Dr. Liu says.

Opioids: These heavy-duty pain drugs come with a big caution sign, since opioid use and addiction have reached epidemic proportions in the United States, Dr. Liu notes. For brief periods, prescription opioids such as hydrocodone or oxycodone might be prescribed with careful monitoring by your doctor. Aside from a strong risk for dependency, opioids can also have side effects such as drowsiness and sedation, constipation, or allergic reactions such as itching or hives. Long-term opioid use can even make back pain worse by altering the nervous system to perceive heightened levels of pain.

Corticosteroids: Taken either by mouth or injected into your back, steroids are a powerful anti-inflammatory and produce lasting relief. But if used for long, steroids can produce weight gain, bone loss or problems processing blood sugar.

Antidepressants or antiseizure drugs: Obviously, these medications are typically meant to combat depression or seizures, but they can also be effective for nerve problems that contribute to back pain, calming irritation and relieving burning pain. Common side effects can include headaches, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, insomnia, fatigue or sexual side effects, so proceed with caution, Dr. Liu says.

Caveats to medication use

Dr. Liu says it’s important to keep in mind that medications for back pain can’t fix the underlying problem causing the pain – they can only temporarily relieve symptoms and improve how well you function.

“The source of your pain still hasn’t been addressed by taking pills or other medicines,” he says. “For this reason, other approaches such as physical therapy are key. They can target the problem causing your back pain in the first place.”

It’s also smart to track how well any back pain medicine works for you by keeping a pain diary, he says. Log when pain strikes, how long it lasts, and how severe the pain is. After medication dosages, write down how you feel and estimate how much pain relief you’re experiencing. Also keep track of side effects.

“Medicine for back pain should always be used with caution, but the right medication at the right time can be a godsend,” Dr. Liu says. “Make sure you stay in close contact with your doctor to ensure your medication is the best fit for you.”

HMP Announces Agenda for 2nd Annual Cocaine, Meth & Stimulant Summit

News Image

The perspectives gathered from various professional fields at the stimulant summit are crucial to identifying the evidence-based strategies we need for effective treatment and prevention.

With the surge in misuse of prescription and illicit stimulants, HMP, a leader in healthcare events and education and producer of the annual Rx Drug Abuse & Heroin Summit, today announced the second annual Cocaine, Meth & Stimulant Summit will be held November 8–10, 2019, in Miami, Florida, and will feature an agenda comprising expert speakers with deep knowledge of the ongoing epidemic.

The Cocaine, Meth & Stimulant Summit is the only educational event providing clinical, law enforcement, and public safety professionals with practical strategies and solutions to address the country’s stimulant crisis, an often underrecognized emergency compounding the opioid epidemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), roughly 14,000 cocaine users and 10,000 meth users died in the United States in 2017, an increase of more than a third compared with 2016 and triple the number of deaths in 2012. That puts stimulant deaths on par with the opioid depressant heroin, which was involved in 15,000 overdose deaths in 2017.

The Summit will kick off with a keynote address from John L. Eadie, MPA, a coordinator with the National Emerging Threats Initiative, administered by the Office of National Drug Control Policy, on Friday, November 8. With 44 years’ experience within the public health field, Eadie has served in management, executive, and consulting capacities, directing the New York state Department of Health’s pharmaceutical diversion program from 1985 to 1995. His session will present the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Initiative’s (HIDTA) latest findings to be used by clinicians, law enforcement, and public safety personnel to design appropriate interdiction, prevention, and treatment programs.

Sheriff Mark Lamb, Pinal County, Arizona, is also slated to speak. Elected in 2017, Sheriff Lamb leads initiatives to address the stimulant crisis by developing relationships with mental and behavioral health providers throughout the county. In addition to its specialized narcotics and anti-smuggling teams, the Sheriff’s office works with federal partners to combat human and drug trafficking in Pinal County. Sheriff Lamb has appeared on A&E Network’s Live PD and 60 Days In.

“Addressing the dangers of stimulant addiction requires a multifaceted approach,” said Doug Edwards, Director, HMP’s Psychiatry & Behavioral Health Learning Network. “The perspectives gathered from various professional fields at the stimulant summit are crucial to identifying the evidence-based strategies we need for effective treatment and prevention. Having the participation of industry leaders like John Eadie and Sheriff Lamb is testament to the severity of this issue.”

This year’s Summit features a clinical track as well as law enforcement and public safety tracks, catering to the various players involved in fighting this epidemic. Attendees can earn up to 23.25 CE credits at the Summit, including 3 ethics credits. Organizations supporting the conference include the South Florida High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, the National Safety Council, the National HIDTA Program Emerging Threats Initiative, and National Narcotic Officers’ Associations’ Coalition.

The original research and findings were released in Buettner’s bestselling books The Blue Zones Solution, The Blue Zones of Happiness, The Blue Zones, and Thrive—all published by National Geographic books. Using original Blue Zones research, Blue Zones works with cities to make healthy choices easier through permanent changes to a city’s environment, policy, and social networks. Participating communities have experienced double digit drops in obesity and tobacco use and have saved millions of dollars in healthcare costs. For more information, visit bluezones.com.

About Barry Community Foundation

The Barry Community Foundation’s mission is to improve lives by bridging resources. This organization is dedicated to improving the lives of people in Barry County and brings together the resources of individuals, families, and businesses to support other local nonprofits, projects and community initiatives. Over the past 25 years it has become a trusted leader and resource, forging lasting relationships that inspire and empower our community to make a difference. The Foundation is positioned to be reactive in times of community need however it has also adopted a framework called the Seven Elements of a Healthy Community in which the community is divided into seven different sectors. This is a strategic approach where each sector is examined and decisions are made based on the assets our community currently has on hand. For more information, visit barrycf.org.
