Life-saving Ostomy Surgery Moves Out of the Shadows

UOAA estimates that there are 725,000 to 1-million people in the U.S. are alive today as a result of ostomy surgery.

It can save the lives of those shot or stabbed in the abdomen. It’s a life-saving surgery used in the final stages of common cancers such as colorectal and bladder. When deadly complications of inflammable bowel disease arise, it can give life back. When an infant comes into this world with a birth defect or rare disease of the digestive system, it can provide a childhood not possible several generations ago.

Yet ostomy surgery is still often talked about in hush tones and cloaked in stigma. People of all ages have this type of surgery that creates an opening (stoma) in the abdomen that allows for the removal of bodily waste into an odor-proof pouch outside the body. At its most simple it’s just a new way to go to the bathroom.

Though ostomy support and information has been around for well over half a century it is known that people still delay or refuse the surgery and die because of a preconceived notion of life with an “ostomy bag.” People who have connected with support and educational resources like those available from United Ostomy Associations of America (UOAA), learn that there is indeed a full life possible after surgery. With a proper pouching system fit, emotional support, and doctor and ostomy nurse consultation – there are no limits on what a person living with an ostomy is capable of doing.

“Let’s work together to make sure people don’t suffer alone in silence,” says UOAA President and Susan Burns who had her life saved over 30 years ago from ileostomy surgery. Ostomies are life-savers¬. UOAA estimates that there are 725,000 to 1-million people in the U.S. are alive today as a result of ostomy surgery. “We’re living proof that you can pick up the pieces and do things like play with your grandchildren, go to college, find love, excel in your career, play sports and embrace life,” Burns says.

Saturday, October 5, 2019 is Ostomy Awareness Day and the theme is “Ostomies Are Life-Savers.” You can help ostomy awareness move out of the shadows and into the public consciousness. The resilience of the ostomy community will be on display at eight Run for Resilience Ostomy 5k events around the country from September 28th through October 12th. You’re also invited to attend or gather friends and family wherever you want and sign-up for a virtual walk/run option. Please visit http://www.ostomy5k.org for details. “Hollister Incorporated is proud to stand with UOAA as the exclusive Diamond Sponsor of its 2019 Run for Resilience Ostomy 5K events. UOAA and its members work tirelessly to increase awareness and support quality of life and life-saving ostomy surgery,” said Brian Luedtke, Hollister Senior Vice President, The Americas. “By coming together as a community we can collectively make a difference and help people living with ostomies experience their best lives.”

Go to http://www.ostomy.org to learn more about this life-saving surgery and all the ways to make an impact on this day. The Run for Resilience is supported by Hollister, Coloplast, Byram, Colo-Majic, ConvaTec, Safe n Simple and Kem Enterprises.

Elkhart Mayor Tim Neese visits with student at Lighthouse Autism Center.

When asked about his time at the center, Mayor Neese said, “I’ve only been at the center a short time, but I can see that the staff at Lighthouse are second to none, genuinely care about the kids and are truly making an impact on the lives of children with autism.”

On Wednesday, September 25th, Elkhart Mayor Tim Neese visited Lighthouse Autism Center’s newest ABA therapy center in Elkhart, Indiana. The newest center opened in August and is the seventh center opened by Lighthouse Autism Center, which provides ABA therapy services in Mishawaka, Granger, Plymouth, Warsaw and Portage, MI.

The new center will provide intensive, center-based therapy utilizing the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to nearly twenty-five families in the Elkhart area. The therapy programs are custom made for each child and work on things like social skills, communication skills, living skills and school readiness skills.

During his visit, Mayor Neese had the opportunity to meet with Founder and Executive Director, Gregg Maggioli, who has a son with autism. “My son attended one of the first ABA centers in the state of Indiana. When I saw the impact it had on his life, and the life of my family, I knew I had to find a way to bring this service to other families with autism.”

While touring the facility, Mayor Neese was able to observe children working, playing, participating in a simulated classroom setting, and even spoke with one child as she practiced asking and answering questions. When asked about his time at the center, Mayor Neese said, “I’ve only been at the center a short time, but I can see that the staff at Lighthouse are second to none, genuinely care about the kids and are truly making an impact on the lives of children with autism.”

Lighthouse Autism Center is now enrolling children at their newest center in Elkhart, Indiana. To schedule a tour, call 574-387-4313 or visit http://www.lighthouseautismcenter.com/autism-treatment-center-elkhart.

ADHD Lullaby™ makes Billboard’s New Age Album Chart for Twelve Consecutive Weeks

The science and thought process behind this album is one of the most unique, natural, and cost-effective solutions to battling sleep struggles in children with ADHD. It is one of the best ADHD products I’ve come across in my professional career.

ADHD Lullaby™, a first-of-its-kind music album designed to help ADHD children fall asleep, has been listed on Billboard’s New Age Album chart in the Top Ten for twelve consecutive weeks starting on July 13, 2019.

Using a patent-pending music methodology based upon the principles of neuroscience, ADHD Lullaby™ has received positive feedback from families and medical professionals.

“The science and thought process behind this album is one of the most unique, natural, and cost-effective solutions to battling sleep struggles in children with ADHD. It is one of the best ADHD products I’ve come across in my professional career,” stated Dr. Edward Hallowell, M.D., M.Ed.

A Harvard graduate, Hallowell is a board-certified child and adult psychiatrist who is recognized as a pioneering expert in the field of ADD and ADHD. Hallowell co-authored the New York Times best-seller Driven to Distraction and is a highly recognized public figure appearing frequently on Dr. Oz, Oprah, Dr. Phil, Good Morning America, CNN, and 60 Minutes.

ADHD Lullaby™ is available for purchase and streaming worldwide on all the major digital music services including Amazon Music, iTunes, and Spotify. The complete 15-track album is also available for purchase or download at ADHDLullaby.com.

ADHD Lullaby™ was developed by Arizona law enforcement officer Bryan Wisda who was shot in the line of duty in 2016. During his recovery, he learned to play guitar and discovered the music methodology behind the album while trying to help his then ten-year-old ADHD son get to sleep at night.

“The order of the songs, the use of musical tension, each song’s tempo, and root note all serve a specific purpose. When coupled with specific embedded frequencies from neuroscience, these elements help relax the human body and the ADHD brain,” stated Wisda.

An estimated 6.4 million American children are diagnosed with ADHD according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a number that has been increasing steadily since 2003. Sleep struggles is one of the top side effects for children who take ADHD medications.

For more information or to purchase the album visit ADHDlullaby.com.

Middle Tennessee College and Addiction Recovery Facility Join Forces To Offer College Credit for Completing Treatment

Williamson College And Spring 2 Life Recovery Join Forces To Offer College Credit For Completing Treatment

The stigma is being eradicated, and in its place, hope and purpose are being offered. This is a huge deal for the national recovery community

Williamson College is teaming up with Spring 2 Life Recovery to offer college credits in exchange for completion of the recovery program curriculum.

The 7 Principles curriculum teaches recovery through biblical knowledge. S2L Recovery bases their approach around seven Christ-centered principles so that each student can find their way to recovery at their own pace.

This partnership is the first of its kind, but hopefully not the last. “We want other universities and other rehabs to do this, and we’re willing to show them how we got to this place. This partnership speaks volumes to an organization that actually gets it. The stigma is being eradicated, and in its place, hope and purpose are being offered. This is a huge deal for the national recovery community,” said Pastor Adam Comer, CEO, S2L Recovery.

The complementary program between Williamson College and S2L Recovery is set to begin in 2020.

Join S2L Recovery and Williamson College for the signing of the articulation agreement at 9 a.m. on October 1st, 2019, at 3180 Hill Creek Road, Woodbury, TN, 37190.

Led by ordained pastoral counselors, an experienced medical/clinical team, and certified peer recovery specialists, S2L offers a safe and nurturing Christian environment. S2L Recovery team members don’t judge the circumstances that bring men to treatment because of addiction. Instead, they strive to follow Christ’s example and serve others through restoration and recovery.

Since its inception in 1998, Williamson College has become a dynamic, collaborative, creative center of learning that is equipping students to impact the communities they step into. Williamson College is a private, non-profit, Christian liberal arts college that welcomes students of all ages and cultures, including non-traditional learners who are already in the workforce.

CBIC to Introduce an Entry-Level Examination and Additional Method of Recertification

News Image

“The a-IPC will arm those interested in the field of infection prevention and control with the baseline knowledge necessary to pursue a career in infection prevention and control,” said 2019 CBIC President Roy Boukidjian, MSN, PHN, CIC, NE-BC.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), on any given day, approximately one in 31 hospitalized patients contracts at least one healthcare-associated infection (HAI). Infection prevention and control (IPC) professionals are often the first line of defense and as the IPC field continues to grow, so too does the importance of staying up-to-date on evolving IPC best practices.

The Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc. (CBIC) is responsible for developing, implementing and administering the only certification in infection prevention and control that is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). CBIC is considered the industry leader in providing a standardized measurement of current knowledge needed for individuals practicing infection prevention and control. The CIC® credential is awarded to healthcare professionals who have demonstrated a mastery of knowledge in IPC.

Beginning in 2020, in addition to the CIC®, CBIC will be offering two new initiatives to further advance its mission to provide pathways to assess and maintain infection prevention competency.

The first is an entry-level pathway, the Associate – Infection Prevention and Control (a-IPC) certification examination. Unlike the CIC®, there are no IPC experience or job-specific requirements to apply. The a-IPC is intended to provide a basic assessment of knowledge in infection prevention and control, and to act as a gateway for individuals interested in entering the field of infection prevention and control. The a-IPC will be valid for three years, at which point candidates would continue on to pursue the CIC® credential to maintain certification.

“The a-IPC will arm those interested in the field of infection prevention and control with the baseline knowledge necessary to pursue a career in infection prevention and control,” said 2019 CBIC President Roy Boukidjian, MSN, PHN, CIC, NE-BC. “It is the perfect stepping stone to prove a candidate’s foundational knowledge, interest and dedication to the field.”

The second initiative is an alternate pathway to the current method of recertification by examination, recertification by continuing education. This method is available to all candidates eligible for CIC® recertification beginning in 2020. CICs who choose to recertify this way must obtain a minimum of 40 Infection Prevention Units (IPUs) and show proof of completion of IP-related academic education, research, publications, presentations, attendance at national conferences, and more.

2019 CBIC President-Elect Linda Goss, DNP, APRN-BC, ANP, CIC, FAPIC, said, “Recertification by continuing education has been a long-awaited option for CICs and the CBIC Board of Directors is excited to make it a reality.”

More information about both initiatives will be published to the CBIC website, social media channels, and email communications in the coming months.

The Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc. was founded in 1981 to protect the public by raising the standard of the infection prevention and control profession through the development, administration and promotion of an accredited certification process. The CIC® certification is held by over 7,600 infection prevention and control professionals working in hospitals, long-term care facilities, ambulatory care centers, and other healthcare and public health settings throughout the world. For more information, please visit http://www.cbic.org/.
