New PgCert Helps Vets Get a Clearer Picture in Just 12 Months

Vet reading radiograph with help

A Primarily Practical Course

Vets learn best through hands-on practical sessions combined with reflective learning.

An innovative new subject has been added to the range of primarily practical PgCerts for veterinary surgeons from CPD Solutions. Small Animal Diagnostic Imaging starts in March 2020 and enables veterinary surgeons to gain their Diagnostic Imaging PgCert in a 12 month period. PgCerts are awarded by the University of Chester, leaders in the provision of work-based learning. The new PgCert in Diagnostic Imaging joins existing PgCerts from CPD Solutions in Small Animal Surgery, Emergency Practice and Small Animal Dentistry.

The new programme features ten full days of small group hands-on practical imaging sessions based at the recently upgraded CPD Solutions Training Centre in Studley near Birmingham. Vets will develop their existing imaging skills and learn additional techniques that they can use directly in small animal practice. Decision making is a major focus, as it is critical in the management of small animal patients on a daily basis. This new PgCert from CPD Solutions and the University of Chester complies fully with the RCVS focus on outcomes-based CPD and reflective learning.

The CPD Solutions series of PgCerts has unique benefits and key differences from the existing PgCert options available for vets. CPD Solutions programmes have a very strong emphasis on practical training. To make the most of the way that vets learn best, all attendance sessions are practical with no lecture days. Attendance days are grouped into just three sessions to minimise travel and disruption to work and home life. The 12 month duration of the CPD Solutions programme allows vets to gain their PgCert qualification in Diagnostic Imaging in a much shorter time frame than that allowed by PgCerts from other providers.

Small Animal Diagnostic Imaging is an exciting addition to the current range of PgCerts from CPD Solutions. Expert diagnostic imaging tutors will help vets to refine their techniques and interpretation in small group sessions, and vets can then use their new skills directly in their practices.

Susie Coughlan, veterinary surgeon and MD at CPD Solutions has 21 years’ experience in providing practical training for vets. ‘Our experience is that vets get the most out of hands-on practical training in a structured and supportive environment, combined with reflective application of their new skills in practice. The new PgCert in Small Animal Diagnostic Imaging follows the same format – all attendance sessions are practical, and the course provides support for developing reflective work based learning that vets can use with all of their patients.’

Vets wanting to find out more about the new PgCert can contact CPD Solutions on 0151 328 0444 or visit http://www.pgcert.com

Twenty Year Veteran of Massage Therapy launches new self-care tool on Kickstarter

Idea Incubator Inc. is innovating again. This time the product design company is drawing from its founder, Marni Peters’, experience as a massage therapist. After a personal battle with plantar fasciitis, Marni and her team began working on a self-care tool that would assist and help resolve foot pain. After two years of trial, re-evaluation, and redesign they are about to deliver the best new self-care tool to keep foot pain at bay.

According to a survey by the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), completed in May 2014, “Nearly 8 out of 10 Americans have experienced foot pain and those who suffer from chronic foot pain are significantly more likely to have pain in other parts of their body”.

“As a massage therapist, I realized foot pain was an epidemic and wanted to offer something everyone could use at home to help prevent and resolve foot pain. There are plenty of products on the market that address foot issues, but none that allow you to use the techniques we use as massage therapists. The patent pending Foot Therapist™ fills that gap,” explains Marni. “The Foot Therapist is designed to be an adjunct to the multi-disciplinary approach that is needed to create healthy feet. In addition to self-care at home, professional help can assist you in addressing the root cause of your pain,” says Marni.

The Foot Therapist is like having a massage therapist at home 24/7. It uniquely targets the small muscles and fascia of the foot to help relieve tight, strained tissue. The ultimate goal is for everyone to enjoy happy, healthy, flexible feet.

Marni and her team are launching The Foot Therapist™ on Kickstarter October 1, 2019. They need to raise $30,000 to bring this tool to life. Having dealt with the headaches associated with overseas manufacturing, they decided to look closer to home. They successfully found a reputable manufacturer in their hometown. “Knowing we have all the pieces in place to create a beautiful, functional, self-care tool is exciting. It’s also exciting to work with a manufacturer who shares our values regarding the environment and quality of work. We want our tool to last as long as you need it; and perhaps be passed on to the next generation,” Marni says.

Pricing and availability: The Foot Therapist launches on Kickstarter October 1, 2019. Pre-order early and save.

Stay Alert to Stay Safe from Deadly Skin Cancer

https://www.prweb.com/

Angie Seelal, RPA-C

Practicing skin awareness is key to making sure that our moles are non-cancerous.

It’s a real concern: The CDC reports that rates of melanoma – the deadliest form of skin cancer – more than doubled between 1982 and 2011 and continue to rise. “Practicing skin awareness is key to making sure that our moles are non-cancerous,” observes Angie Seelal, a Certified Registered Physician’s Assistant specializing in Dermatology with Advanced Dermatology PC. “Staying alert supports early treatment and peace of mind.”

Moles’ connection with melanoma is due to the role of melanocytes – pigment-producing skin cells. Melanocytes are where melanomas develop. And clusters of melanocytes are what form moles. “However, most moles are harmless,” notes Seelal. “Almost all of us have them. The key to mole safety is keeping track of risk factors and changes in number or appearance.”

While melanomas make up a minority of skin cancer cases, they provoke the most concern because they are the most lethal, forecast to cause more than 7,000 deaths this year in the United States, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD).

“Paramount to successfully treating melanoma is early detection,” explains Seelal. “If it is allowed to progress, it can metastasize and spread to other organs, becoming especially dangerous. On the other hand, early treatment is extremely effective: If we begin before there is any spread to the body’s lymph nodes, the five-year survival rate is 99 percent.”

Moles – medical name “nevi” – fall into two categories: 1. common moles and 2. atypical or “dysplastic” moles. “Most people have between ten and forty common moles,” notes Seelal. “The common moles share certain characteristics: They are round and smooth, with a distinct border. They are small, maxing out at about the size of a pencil eraser. And they are one color: usually pink, tan, or brown. Atypical moles, on the other hand, are larger and may have an irregular color, surface, and/or border.”

“More than 50 common moles and atypical moles are risk factors we need to be aware of,” continues Seelal.

And increasing melanoma awareness remains important: “Half of melanomas are self-detected,” explains Seelal. “The earlier the patient spots it, the better the outcome.”

With that in mind, Seelal offers the following advice:

5 Tips for Mole and Melanoma Safety

1. Use a Body Mole Map for monthly self-checks: “Establish a baseline and then monitor for changes,” advises Seelal. “People can print a Body Mole Map off of the AAD’s web site and use it to diagram moles and other marks. This is an effective reference during monthly self-checks for changes that require medical evaluation.”

2. Learn your A, B, C, D, and Es: “There are five factors to remember during self-exams,” says Seelal. “Asymmetry, or an irregular shape. Border, or an uneven edge. Color – a mix is a concern. Diameter, or a change in size. And evolving or changing over time. Any of these warrants an immediate doctor’s visit.”

3. Monitor more than moles: “Melanomas are not limited to moles,” explains Seelal. “In fact, up to eighty percent occur in other areas. During self-checks, we need to stay alert for all skin changes, including color, texture, itching, bleeding and oozing. If any occurs, it’s time for a trip to the doctor’s.”

4. Schedule regular evaluations: “In addition to many common moles or the presence of atypical moles,” notes Seelal, “genes and environment also elevate melanoma risk. Factors include fair skin, childhood sunburns, and personal or family skin cancer. Those with higher risk should see the dermatologist regularly – as often as every three months for those with a combination of factors.”

5. Practice ‘safe sun’ – all year long: “Summer passes, but the sun still shines,” emphasizes Seelal. “The AAD reports that about only half of U.S. adults regularly stay protected. With ninety-five percent of melanomas linked to UV exposure, we need to get this number higher: use sunscreen, seek shade, and wear protective clothing. And absolutely no indoor tanning.”

“The most common cancer is skin cancer,” concludes Seelal. “But it’s treatable. Practicing skin awareness can help us stay safe and keep calm.”

National Conscience Month Designates January 2020 as a Crucial Time to Raise Awareness about Using Your Conscience as Your Guide in Making Better Decisions

https://www.prweb.com/

National Conscience Month Announcement

When the mind does not regularly rely on the conscience, even a ‘successful’ human being is condemned to acting in the world like an automobile that can turn in only one direction. Collisions and destruction are inevitable. — Leonard Perlmutter – National Conscience Month founder

The American Meditation Institute (AMI) an organization devoted to providing comprehensive training in Yoga Science—the world’s oldest holistic mind/body medicine and the core principle of every spiritual tradition—has launched the first ever National Conscience Month. National Conscience Month will take place January 2020, with the mission of encouraging individuals across the nation to practice using their conscience as a guide.

Designed to work in partnership with citizens, governments, school systems, faith leaders, non-profits, community organizations and corporations across the United States, the month-long observance identifies January 2020 as an auspicious time to celebrate and raise awareness about the value of using your conscience as an inspired guide to making better decisions.

In today’s world we know that people are moving quickly and reacting automatically––rather than making discerning choices. Currently there are few coordinated opportunities to teach people how to evaluate options or to use their conscience as a guide. Because of this, we experience dis-ease. We suffer personally and as a culture from ills like addictions, gun violence, chronic and debilitating health conditions, suicide, racism, bigotry, stress, and depression, to name just a few.

The inspiration for National Conscience Month grew out of the Yoga Science “Law of Karma” which states simply that thoughts lead to words, actions and, eventually, to consequences. This law of cause and effect, embraced by all great scientists, from Sir Isaac Newton to Albert Einstein and today’s quantum physicists, is as true and unavoidable as the Law of Gravity.

According to National Conscience Month founder Leonard Perlmutter, “A space satellite has no inner guidance to determine its destiny. You, however, can escape the failings of the culture or your own past mistakes, and thrive in the world, simply by letting the conscience be your guide in thought, word and deed.”

National Conscience Month’s (January 2020) campaign will:

  • Remind, educate and raise awareness about the value of using your conscience as a guide to making better decisions.
  • Build and activate a national movement that embraces the role of conscience-driven choices in experiencing more health, happiness, security, and creating more rewarding lives for our families, communities and nation.
  • Encourage individual actions through simple experiments that aid in increasing positivity, self-confidence, and self-reliance.

According to Dan Millman, philosopher, acclaimed author, world champion gymnast and featured National Conscience Month speaker, “Everything you’ll ever need to know is within you; the secrets of the universe are imprinted on the cells of your body.”

Breeze Recovery on the Risks of Marijuana use to Adolescents, Teens and Pregnant Women

https://www.prweb.com/

Gulf Breeze Recovery Pool

“Our hope is to raise awareness of the potential risks of marijuana products for adolescents, teens, and pregnant women so that addiction and other future negative consequences can be avoided.” Barnett Gilmer, CEO of Gulf Breeze Recovery

With the ease of access to marijuana products and the constant promises of cures for a multitude of ills, many believe that marijuana is a natural cure-all with no harmful consequences. Unfortunately, however, there are consequences, especially to adolescents and expectant mothers.

Since 1871, the United States Surgeon General has been the leading spokesperson on the nation’s health. The most recent warning from the Surgeon General was issued on August 29, 2019, to underscore those risks.

The warning states:

I, Surgeon General VADM Jerome Adams, am emphasizing the importance of protecting our Nation from the health risks of marijuana use in adolescence and during pregnancy. Recent increases in access to marijuana and in its potency, along with misperceptions of safety of marijuana endanger our most precious resource, our nation’s youth.

Marijuana today has a much higher potency than in years past. The average strength of marijuana was three times stronger in 2014 than it was in 1995. These concentrated products are becoming more available not only for medicinal use, but also for recreational. The risks of dependency and addiction increase with more powerful products.

Parents sometimes downplay the risks involved when their adolescents and teens begin experimenting with marijuana. Parents may remember back when they smoked marijuana as teenagers, and feel reassured that marijuana is safe because it is legalized in many states. Marijuana, however, is not legal in the United States for anyone under the age of 21 and the potency is much higher than when the parents were teenagers.

The complete report from the Surgeon General points out that brain development continues from before birth until the mid-20s. and that it is vulnerable to the effects of addictive substances. Changes associated with frequent marijuana use during adolescence include memory issues, motivation, decision-making, and attention. Increased suicide attempts have been reported with adolescent and teen marijuana use. It is linked to risk for early-onset psychotic disorders and those risks increase with the potency of the marijuana product and the younger the age of first use. Early use of marijuana is associated with other substance use, with those using frequently showing a 130% greater likelihood of using opioids.

Pregnant women use marijuana more than any other illicit drug. No amount of marijuana use during pregnancy or adolescence is known to be safe.

Marijuana use during pregnancy can affect the fetus and fetal brain development. It is recommended that women who are breastfeeding avoid using marijuana. THC, the primary psychoactive compound found in marijuana, has been found in breast milk for up to six days after the last use of marijuana. THC may affect the brain development of the newborn and result in hyperactivity and poor cognitive function as well as other long-term consequences.

Just as second-hand tobacco smoke is harmful to babies and adults, so is marijuana smoke. Marijuana contains many of the same harmful components as tobacco smoke. Neither should be smoked around babies.

Due to the potential adverse effects on the fetus, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that pregnant women not use cannabis products.

Barnett Gilmer, CEO of Gulf Breeze Recovery, states, “Our hope is to raise awareness of the potential risks of marijuana products for adolescents, teens, and pregnant women so that addiction and other future negative consequences can be avoided.”

About Gulf Breeze Recovery: Gulf Breeze Recovery is a holistic, non-12-step, drug and alcohol treatment program that focuses not only on helping their guests achieve sobriety, but also helping them begin a healthy, happy lifestyle.

National Nonprofit One Warm Coat Launches Campaign to Keep All Americans Warm This Winter

One Warm Coat Day 2019

One Warm Coat distributed more than 500,000 coats to children and adults in need last winter. The nonprofit is ramping up its efforts to collect and distribute coats ahead of the 2019-2020 season.

“We often don’t think about providing warmth and support to those in need until after the first snowstorm of winter hits or the first frigid Arctic blast. As a result, many of us take action after our most vulnerable neighbors are already in danger,” One Warm Coat CEO Beth W. Amodio.

Americans in every corner of the country are pledging to launch coat drives on Thursday, Oct., 3, in honor of One Warm Coat Day – the start of One Warm Coat’s annual campaign to make sure no one goes cold this winter.

One Warm Coat provided more than 500,000 coats to those in need during the 2018-19 winter season – but with the prospect of a bone chilling winter ahead, it is moving up the start of its annual campaign to make sure more people are safe and warm.

“We often don’t think about providing warmth and support to those in need until after the first snowstorm of winter hits or the first frigid Arctic blast. As a result, many of us take action after our most vulnerable neighbors are already in danger,” said Beth W. Amodio, One Warm Coat’s president and chief executive officer. “That’s why we’re encouraging Americans across the country to begin collecting and donating coats now – so we can ensure everyone who needs a warm coat will have one this winter.”

For the 39 million Americans who live in poverty, the onset of cold weather – and the prospect of a bone-chilling winter ahead – poses life-threatening danger. For these families and individuals, the winter months are more expensive and present a bigger strain on their budgets.

The winter cold also puts strain on their bodies. Cold weather forces the body to work harder, putting stress on the heart to ensure the body stays warm. Children and the elderly are especially vulnerable – and they can quickly develop hypothermia without protection from the cold.

One Warm Coat Day offers an opportunity to raise awareness about the need for warm coats.

The organization is hoping to motivate 500 people, community groups and businesses to visit their website on One Warm Coat Day and register to host coat drives this fall.

One Warm Coat is also encouraging online donations. Every $1 donated warms 1 person!

Hosting a coat drive is simple. One Warm Coat provides all of the resources necessary to register, promote, and manage your drive. It then partners with nonprofits in each community to ensure that every coat that’s collected is delivered to someone in need.

One Warm Coat Day Sponsorships

One Warm Coat Day is benefiting from a number of key corporate sponsorships that will help raise additional awareness.

In celebration of One Warm Coat Day, national retailer Lands’ End and The Weather Channel are kicking off an integrated campaign to spread warmth. Lands’ End customers will receive 40 percent off one outerwear item when they bring in a new or gently worn coat to a Lands’ End store from October 3 -9 (limit 3); additionally, for every Squall jacket sold online on Oct. 3, Lands’ End will donate one outerwear item to One Warm Coat. Tune in to The Weather Channel on October 3 for more information and interviews with One Warm Coat President & CEO, Beth Amodio.

One Warm Coat is grateful to its 2019/2020 program sponsors, including Absolut Vodka, Brooks Brothers, Delta Air Lines, J. Crew, JET 24/FOX 66/YourErie.com and KTVU Fox 2.

About One Warm Coat

One Warm Coat is a national nonprofit organization that provides free, warm coats to people in need. The Coat Drive Program supports individuals, groups, companies and organizations across the country by providing the tools and resources needed to hold a successful coat drive. Coats are distributed in the communities where they were collected, to children and adults in need, without charge, discrimination or obligation. Since One Warm Coat began in 1992, volunteers have hosted more than 35,000 coat drives and more than 6 million coats have been distributed to people in need.

Business Leaders Rank Employee Well-Being as Top Priority, Struggle How to Measure Impact

LifeWorks, a leader in workplace well-being solutions, has released its findings from a recent qualitative survey of 25 US-based CEOs, investigating the impact of mental health and well-being in the workplace. The majority of leaders agree that the importance of employee well-being is increasing, according to the findings. In particular, executives recognize the importance of having effective programs in place to help attract top talent, retain key employees, as well as reduce absenteeism and increase engagement. Yet measuring well-being or the impact of their programs is proving a challenge. All respondents are in agreement on the need for a more comprehensive well-being index.

Michael Colucci, CEO of Idilus LLC, a Professional Employer Organization, said, “Employee well-being ranks number one, because your organization is only as good as the people that you have working for you, and their well-being determines how successful or unsuccessful you’re going to be.”

Employee-First Strategy

The majority of CEOs surveyed agreed that the importance of employee well-being is increasing. One executive stated that “employee well-being programs are becoming more of an expectation rather than a perk.” Whereas this once might have been exclusively the domain of the HR department, there is now a greater understanding among CEOs that employee well-being is vital for creating a productive, engaged and loyal workforce.

According to a CEO from an engineering firm, “I don’t believe that customers should come first, I believe that employees should come first. It’s a tenant at my company. It is a cornerstone of my company to have happy well-adjusted employees.”

Executives surveyed recognize the stress their employees face, with concerns ranging from financial stress to issues around family and home life. Family illness, divorce, childcare and eldercare were key areas, but employees were also concerned about job security and health issues. They also indicated that they saw EAP as a foundational component of well-being.

Another executive said, “If my employees are unhappy or they’re going through whatever stresses that they are encountering at home in their personal life, they bring that in. If you have a big team environment that we work in…it can cause absenteeism. People who aren’t focused at work, it creates delays with projects so things get backed up at work.”

Millennials and Well-Being

There is a growing understanding among company leaders that programs supporting employee well-being are critical for both attracting talent and retaining staff. Millennials, in particular, are seen to be more focused on a company’s culture and well-being approach, but there was also the recognition that anxiety in the workplace was affecting employees at all ages, and therefore wellness needs to be considered at a company-wide level.

Isolation Among CEOs

Unsurprisingly, the majority of CEOs said that they experience significant work stress, but many of them believed that they were successful in compartmentalizing that anxiety, and almost all noted how important it was for them to mask anxiety and stress as part of their everyday lives.

The results show how the burden of leadership impacts many CEOs. Executives surveyed are aware of the contagious nature of workplace stress and how they need to contain their emotions with the larger workforce. Nearly all the CEOs questioned also felt some form of isolation in the workforce, and recognized that this was a concern for their well-being and work.

How do We Measure Wellness?

Among those surveyed, there is no consistent approach to how their companies tackled improving employee wellness in the workforce, or even how they measured workplace wellness. While the majority said they measured the success of the well-being program with business-critical factors such as retention of employees, satisfaction in their role and employee engagement – these outcomes are something that CEOs set as a priority for CHROs.

All the respondents agreed that a comprehensive employee well-being index would be helpful to their business and many noted that they currently do not have a stable measure or index for their well-being program, with each using different KPIs and metrics. Almost all mentioned the use of some form of EAP or external wellness support, but many did not believe that their employees engage with the support provided as much as they could and there was little way to measure the success of that engagement.

Ushering in a New Era of Unified Well-Being

Paula Allen, Vice President of Research, Analytics and Innovation for Morneau Shepell said, “Employee wellness is increasingly critical to business success and at the top of the agenda for many CEOs and even board members. But executives still struggle with methods to properly execute and evaluate that support. LifeWorks is positioned to address these concerns. We partner with organizations to support their employee’s total well-being – physical, mental, social and financial – in a preventative, holistic, high-engagement approach. K.I.N.D. Concentrates Teams Up with Nonprofit Leaf for Life Foundation to Support Veteran Families and Spread PTSD Awareness in Arizona

More than half a million military veterans reside in Arizona and we believe it’s our duty to give back to a community that has sacrificed so much. We are proud to be an ongoing partner with Leaf for Life Foundation.

Medical cannabis manufacturer K.I.N.D. Concentrates has partnered with Leaf for Life Foundation, an Arizona 501(c)3 nonprofit organization to support their Helping Veteran Families Stand United program.

K.I.N.D. Concentrates will donate a portion of the proceeds from their new military-themed packages to Leaf for Life Foundation at $1 for every 1,000 mg. purchase and .50 cents for every 500 mg. purchase. Geo Leaf, the wholesale division of MedMen, created the distinctive camo-themed cartridges specifically for the program which kicks off on October 1st at dispensaries throughout Arizona. The program is ongoing and supports veteran initiatives lead by Leaf for Life Foundation.

Established in 2018, Leaf for Life Foundation supports families with veterans who suffer from PTSD and other mental health issues. The organization creates awareness on the potential healing benefits of medical cannabis through educational events and resources.

“More than half a million military veterans reside in Arizona and we believe it’s our duty to give back to a community that has sacrificed so much. We are proud to be an ongoing partner with Leaf for Life Foundation,” said Stefan Dyulgerov, Director of Marketing and Communications at K.I.N.D. Concentrates.

K.I.N.D. Concentrates is the first producer of medical marijuana concentrates in Arizona and was established in 2013. The company manufactures and distributes award-winning THC and CBD concentrates made from organic, indoor, medical cannabis plants.

Leaf for Life Foundation co-founders Danielle Sedgwick and Laura Franklin were personally inspired to start a support network for American military veterans and their families. “We have witnessed firsthand how medical cannabis can help families experiencing the residual side-effects of the war at home. Especially when traditional medical treatments aren’t working,” stated Sedgwick.
