Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Foundation Joins World CP Day On October 6, 2019

News Image

Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Foundation (CPARF) is a proud World Cerebral Palsy Day* partner. On Sunday, October 6, 2019, CPARF joins 120 other organizations around the globe to shine a light on people with CP — to highlight and celebrate their accomplishments, to make it possible for them to achieve what they want to, and to give them space to use their voices.

CPARF heeds that call and focuses on funding research that helps people with CP live the lives they envision for themselves.

People like Naomi. She’s nonverbal and her smile says so much. She and her mom share many inside jokes — a deeply personal language that exists without a word.

CPARF is poised to help open up a world of potential for Naomi and approximately 3.6 million people with CP who can’t communicate verbally, so that she and her mom may be able to say everything they’ve ever wanted to each other one day — because of research CPARF supports.

CPARF is funding and collaborating with Principal Investigator Dr. Leigh Hochberg and the BrainGate Research Consortium team as they develop first-of-its-kind thought-to-speech technology — generating real-time intentional speech using a connection between a computer and a tiny computer chip implanted at the top a person’s brain. CPARF and BrainGate aim to revolutionize communication to unlock the world so that people with CP can pursue every opportunity to connect in every way they want to.

You can support the thought-to-speech initiative and other research projects by donating to STEPtember.

CPARF’S MISSION

Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Foundation is a nonprofit organization driving cutting-edge research to change the lives of 18 million people with cerebral palsy. We won’t stop until people with CP can live pain-free, until they can live the lives they envision for themselves, and until they can express what’s on their mind and be understood even when they can’t speak. We won’t stop until we can prevent CP in the first place. We won’t stop until we find a cure.

CPARF works with the best scientists and researchers in the US across many specialties and disciplines. We foster collaboration between them nationwide, as well as with the global CP scientific community. We also focus on ensuring that the breakthroughs, advances, and treatments they discover will be widely implemented so that we can help as many people with CP as possible.

Reflux Gourmet launches MINT CHOCOLATE RESCUE

Now available on Amazon, Reflux Gourmet offers the benefits of protection and relief from the experience of reflux via its premier product, Mint Chocolate Rescue! Utilizing the power of alginate therapy, Reflux Gourmet provides an answer to the question posed by every reflux sufferer: What now?

As the only mint chocolate that is actually good for reflux, it is also one of the few therapies that is completely safe, and the only alginate reflux product that is made from 100% all-natural ingredients and free of harmful additives. Mint Chocolate Rescue is safe from the harmful carcinogen N-nitrosodimethylamine, also known as NDMA, which can cause cancer. For more information on the FDA statement, regarding NMDA, please click here.

Alginate therapy harnesses the natural therapeutic safeguarding ability of kelp. Alginate is an all-natural polymer harvested from brown seaweed (kelp). Alginates have been used safely in the food industry for over 100 years. Alginates have NO known side effects and are even safe for children and pregnant women.

Unlike other therapeutic options, Reflux Gourmet’s Mint Chocolate Rescue actually stops reflux from happening. When taken orally, the alginate forms a protective coating in the throat, esophagus, and stomach. Once in the stomach, the alginate forms a gel “raft” that floats on top of the stomach contents and effectively blocks or “corks” the esophagus – physically preventing reflux from occurring, thus guarding the esophagus and throat above.

In clinical studies, alginate therapy alone has been proven highly effective in protecting against reflux, without any of the dangerous side effects of drugs.

While everyone refluxes, excessive reflux can lead to daily misery and untold discomfort. Common manifestations of reflux include heartburn, chest pain, difficulty swallowing, regurgitation, chronic cough, throat pain, excessive throat clearing, and hoarseness, just to name a few.

It was waking up to this every day that drove iconic Napa chef Ken Frank to seek help for himself. Together with internationally renowned reflux experts Dr. Ramon Franco and Dr. Peter Belafsky, they set out to create a safe alternative! These physicians, with a combined 40 years of treating reflux sufferers, made Reflux Gourmet’s alginate therapy work. And Chef Ken, with decades of doing the suffering, made it taste good. Now Chef Ken wakes up every day not to pain, but to the answer: Reflux Gourmet’s MINT CHOCOLATE RESCUE!

Take it away nature’s way!

Reflux Gourmet – it’s comfort cuisine.

Monroe College Hosts “DiVA Talk 2019″ Town Hall on Domestic Violence

https://www.prweb.com/

Monroe College was proud to host “DiVA Talk 2019”, a domestic violence awareness workshop to help those affected know where to turn for confidential, trusted counsel, assistance, and resources.

The “DiVA Talk 2019″ town hall meeting brought together domestic violence experts, survivor support advocates, survivors, and the local community for a frank discussion on how to identify and help those who may be in an abusive or unhealthy relationship.

Monroe College, a national leader in educating urban and international students, last night hosted “DiVA Talk 2019,” a town hall meeting that brought together domestic violence experts, survivor support advocates, survivors, and the local community for a frank discussion on how to identify and help those who may be in an abusive or unhealthy relationship.

Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr., joined Guylaine Harrison, Esq., dean of Monroe’s School of Criminal Justice, in welcoming guests to the event held on the Bronx campus. They were joined by an impressive panel of education, law enforcement, and health and human services professionals on the front lines of this national crisis.

The panelists were:

  • Melissa Cebollero: Senior Director, Office of Government & Community Relations, Montefiore Health System, The University Hospital for Albert Einstein College of Medicine
  • Maureen Curtis, LMSW, MPH: Vice-President, Criminal Justice Programs at the national victim advocacy organization Safe Horizon
  • Steven Ippolito, PhD: Professor with the School of Criminal Justice and King Graduate School at Monroe College
  • Anne Paulle, MS: Adjunct Professor with the School of Criminal Justice at Monroe College and a domestic violence support advocate and consultant
  • Josefa Romero: Supervising Social Worker for the Bronx Supervised Visitation Program
  • Liz Spurrell-Huss, MSW, MPH: Public Health Social Worker with the Office of Community and Population Health (OCPH) at Montefiore Health System

The town hall meeting coincided with the start of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which first began in October 1981 as a “Day of Unity” to rally domestic violence survivor advocates to partner together.

In addition to the panel discussion, an information table was available last night for those interested in learning more about local organizations and public resources for those in need. Representatives from a number of community providers were on hand to answer questions and provide assistance.

Yesterday’s “DiVA Talk 2019” was the latest in a series of workshops and community talks designed to break the silence on domestic violence issues and help those affected know where to turn for confidential, trusted counsel, assistance, and resources.

Launched more than 15 years ago, the DiVA initiative was first convened as a series of domestic violence awareness and intervention projects by Melissa Cebollero, the Health and Human Services Director in the Bronx Borough President’s Office under Adolfo Carrion; the program continues to be maintained by Ruben Diaz, Jr., the current Bronx Borough President. Anne Paulle, one of today’s panelists, was among the first survivor support advocates to join with her. Ms. Paulle was the Director of the Bronx Domestic Violence Programs at the Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services at the time.

The DiVA name — which reflects the initiative’s focus on Domestic Violence Awareness — is given to a number of programs to help individuals in crisis and their families. DiVA programs range from immediate crisis intervention assistance to longer-term counseling and support. DiVA services have included inclusive spa/outreach, theatrical performances and telephone hotline services for the Bronx community.

Renowned Swimmer Goes After World Record in an Endless Pools® Swim Spa

Hall of Fame swimmer Yuko Matsuzaki will attempt to swim for 24 hours against the Endless Pools® swim current at Redondo Beach this Friday and Saturday

It will be one for the record books. International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame swimmer Yuko Matsuzaki will attempt to swim for 24 hours against the Endless Pools® swim current at the World Open Water Swimming Association’s (WOWSA) Ocean Fest this Friday and Saturday. If successful, she’ll earn a Guinness World Record for the Longest Continual Swim in a Swim Spa.

Matsuzaki will swim in an Endless Pools Fitness System E550. Powered by the company’s signature swim current generator, the E550 is a 15-foot swim spa with a large interior footprint, intended for serious swimmers seeking a more fitness-focused swim spa. The model will be set up at the WOWSA Ocean Fest in Redondo Beach, California, to be held October 4 through 6, 2019.

“Everyone at Team Endless Pools admires the passion and ambition of Yuko Matsuzaki,” said Endless Pools General Manager, Darren Pearse. “We challenge ourselves every day to go beyond our existing achievements, to be better than we’ve been. For striving to exceed the world record by 50 percent, we see Yuko truly as a kindred spirit.” Currently, the record is 16 hours, held by Australian International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame swimmer Chloë McCardel since 2014.

Endless Pools has been designing and manufacturing pools for in-place swimming for over 30 years. Their signature adjustable swim current adjusts from a near-zero pace for pre-schoolers to challenging sprint speeds for Olympians and marathon swimmers. In-place swimming permits unprecedented opportunities for stroke refinement, while the lack of flip-turns helps swimmers to develop endurance in a close simulation of open-water conditions.

Matsuzaki became the first Japanese swimmer inducted into the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame in 2011. Her extensive resume includes five completions of the 88K Hernandarias-Paraná Swimming Marathon in Argentina as well two solo records for swims in Lake Cane, Florida – one lasting nearly 30 hours, the other just over 33.

WOWSA Ocean Fest includes multiple open-water races, a global awards ceremony, a Guinness World Records celebration and luau dinner recognizing the year’s peak achievements in open water swimming, and a full day of clinics and seminars. This year’s event will take place at Seaside Lagoon in Redondo Beach, Los Angeles’ proposed site for the 10K Marathon Swim of the 2028 Olympic Games.

Gaggle Webinar Alert – Addressing the Crisis in Adolescent Mental Health

News Image

“The webinar––hosted by Gaggle––will focus on the research behind understanding and responding to this growing crisis, what is causing these mental health issues in adolescents, and the ways two districts in Texas and Idaho have addressed these problems.”

Suicide is the leading cause of death among 10-19-year-old adolescents. This crisis is forcing school districts to become more proactive in monitoring student mental health in order to support and provide services for students in need. Education experts recommend that schools ensure the wellbeing of the “whole child,” often looking to curriculums focused on social emotional learning to teach students skills they can use to moderate and manage their own behavior, treat others with understanding, and develop persistence and resilience in the face of their personal challenges

On Thursday, October 10 at 6 p.m. EST, a panel of adolescent mental health and K-12 education and technology experts will present an informative, free webinar on “Addressing the Crisis in Adolescent Mental Health: How Districts Can Identify and Support Struggling Students.” The webinar – hosted by Gaggle – will focus on the research behind understanding and responding to this growing crisis, what is causing these mental health issues in adolescents, and the ways two districts in Texas and Idaho have addressed these problems.

K-12 Market Specialist and Writer Annie Galvin Teich will lead the webinar, guiding the discussion and ensuring valuable insights from all panelists – comprised of Dr. Lisa Strohman, Kathleen Tuck, and Dr. Melissa Williams-Scott, experts in adolescent mental health and K-12 education and technology. Dr. Lisa Strohman is a clinical psychologist, author, public speaker, and the founder and director of Digital Citizen Academy. Dr. Strohman established Digital Citizen Academy to proactively prevent and educate students, educators, and parents on the issues resulting from technology use and misuse. Kathleen Tuck oversees internal and external communications for the Nampa School District in Idaho, where she also serves as the community relations liaison. She has over 20 years of communications experience in both K-12 and higher education. Dr. Melissa Williams-Scott is a 25-year educator who now acts as executive director of information systems for the Dickinson Independent School District in Texas.

Gaggle has just released a new white paper highlighting research that explains the increase in students’ mental health crises. The paper is written to help school and district leaders create a framework for understanding the drivers in student wellbeing, to proactively address the increase in adolescent depression and suicide, and to expand services to support students in crisis. PSTA Releases Initial Industry and Public Safety Recommendations on Mapping

Consistent with the purpose and mission of the PSTA, the PSTA Board of Directors is pleased to release the Mapping Technical Subcommittee report which includes the initial PSTA recommendations for public safety and industry.

The Mapping Subcommittee was established to review current mapping standards and trends in public safety mapping technology. Subcommittee members then identified gaps and overlapping or conflicting standards that may create potential problems for public safety agencies who are using mapping solutions to provide the framework for connecting, managing, and sharing IoT data between other technology systems, both internally within agencies, and externally to share information with other public safety stakeholders. This was followed by the development of a set of recommendations for a number of key public safety workflow areas surrounding existing open standards and industry specific standards that have been field-tested and adopted by a significant assemblage of organizations and vendors from across public safety industries. Where the desired criteria have not been met, recommendations are given regarding standards, explaining how subsequent implementation would solve a known interoperability challenge.

The Subcommittee’s recommendations are being made based on input and ongoing discussion among PSTA industry and public safety membership, and have been formulated leveraging this industry and public safety expertise as well as publicly available standards and related information.

“We definitely had robust conversations and have open collaboration between public safety agencies and industry on the PSTA Mapping Subcommittee, and have been working together to determine how agencies can best leverage open standards for real world responses like I see every day,” said Captain Kirk McKinzie, Consumnes (CA) Fire Department and Mapping Subcommittee member.

Additional input from public safety and industry are welcome on these and future recommendations.

Mike King, Esri’s Director of Emergency Communications Solutions and PSTA Board Member added, “Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have been used by fire departments, law enforcement EMS agencies for many years. The PSTA Mapping Subcommittee focused on those standards that best support public safety operations, and will help drive more open standard innovation in public safety applications that leverage mapping for emergency response.”

As PSTA considers additional, relevant information provided within the Mapping Subcommittee, it will update and release any changes to its recommendations as necessary. The current report version will be posted on the PSTA website (https://www.pstalliance.org/technical-committees/subcommittee-report-and-comment-form/) and will be open and accessible to the public.

If you are a member of a public safety agency/association, industry or academia and want to contribute to these important technical subcommittee discussions going forward, please visit https://www.pstalliance.org/how-to-join/ to join the PSTA and share your experience and knowledge.
