National Experts Call on the American Public to Recognize Public Health Crisis and Take Action During National Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month

October is National Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month. Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a public health crisis. It strikes 1,000 people each day in the U.S. alone. Thousands of lives could be saved each year if more people understood the critical importance of bystander intervention with CPR and the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs). The Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation urges the public to take some simple steps to be prepared.

Sudden cardiac arrest is a life-threatening emergency that occurs when the heart suddenly stops beating. Usually, there is no warning. It strikes people of all ages who may seem to be healthy, even children and teens. When SCA happens, the person collapses and doesn’t respond or breathe normally. They may gasp or shake as if having a seizure. SCA leads to death in minutes if the person does not get help right away. Survival depends on people nearby calling 911, starting CPR, and using an AED as soon as possible.

Today, only 1 in 10 victims survives. But when bystanders give CPR and use an AED at the scene, as many as 5 in 10 victims survive. And, since sudden cardiac arrest most often occurs at home, laypersons will most likely be called upon to help save the life of a loved one.

Here’s what everyone needs to know:

Survival from SCA depends on the quick actions of people nearby who call 911, start CPR and use an AED to restart the heart. Specifically, they should:

  • Recognize sudden cardiac arrest. If a person is unresponsive and not breathing normally, assume it is SCA.
  • Call 911 and follow dispatcher instructions.
  • Start CPR. Push hard and fast on the center of the chest at a rate of 100-120 beats per minute (e.g., to the tune of “Baby Shark” or “Staying Alive”).
  • Use the nearest AED as quickly as possible to restart the heart.

Imaging data sets are generated through drug discovery research projects using a wide-range of imaging modalities such as optical projection tomography, optical coherence tomography, echocardiogram, light sheet microscopy, MRI and X-ray CT. While many research groups have the capability to generate these data sets inhouse, a lot of research groups struggle with transforming these large and sometimes noisy data sets into actionable insights that allow them to make more informed decisions during the drug discovery process.

A response from The Plantrician Project to the Annals of Internal Medicine Reviews on Dietary Meat Guidelines

Dietary recommendations are more than a single meta-analysis or study. It would be foolish to disregard decades of research, both randomized control trials and observational data, that have found that red and processed meat increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and cancer.

The Annals of Internal Medicine systematic review and meta-analysis of red and processed meat titled “Unprocessed red meat and processed meat consumption: dietary guideline recommendations” draws inaccurate conclusions from a flawed design to advocate for the continued consumption of red and processed meat. The conclusions stand in stark opposition to numerous trials and observational studies linking red and processed meat consumption with the increased risk for heart disease, stroke, some cancers, type 2 diabetes, and all cause mortality. Research from The World Health Organization conducted by 22 experts from 10 countries, reviewing more than 800 studies concluded that consuming 50 grams (1 hot dog or 3-4 strips of bacon) of processed meat daily increased the risk of colorectal cancer. The 2019 American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association guidelines based on a thorough review of the research recommend a diet that emphasizes the intake of vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains, and minimizes the intake of red and processed meats among other processed foods. The NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study evaluated the diets of 536,969 people and concluded, “The results show increased risks of all cause mortality and death due to nine different causes associated with both processed and unprocessed red meat, accounted for, in part, by heme iron and nitrate/nitrite from processed meat.”

These are a few examples, of many, from large studies that refute the findings of the Annals study.

The study title and resultant sensational news headlines misrepresent the findings and fail to tell the story of the inherent limitations of this study and its meta-analyses methods. Originally meta-analyses were utilized beginning in the mid-1970’s to summarize the data from studies of similar populations and identify trends, biases, or knowledge gaps and were inclusive. However, error can enter into the final conclusions when the included studies are different in nature and or exclude other studies. The Annals study discounted findings from multiple large American cohorts that are prospectively collected over a long period of time indicating harm from both red meat and processed red meat, predominately on the basis of the use of food frequency questionnaires, which they state, are inaccurate. Other trusted guidelines like the ACC/AHA are based on multiple prospective observational cohorts including Adventist Health Studies (AHS-1 and -2), Nurses’ Health Study (NHS), Health Professional Follow-Up Study (HPFS), Atherosclerotic Risk in Communities (ARIC), National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), and the National Institute of Health-American Association of Retired People (NIH-AARP) study. These studies have a consistent signal of harm from processed and/or unprocessed red meat. In addition, if there were significant errors or inaccuracies adding noise to the data sets, it would be more difficult to achieve statistical significance in these studies, not less difficult.

Finally, we must avoid the reductionism that has marked our westernized approach to scientific questions and research. Dietary recommendations should be simultaneously evaluated based on their impact to the global food web, or the seed to table journey, that includes soil and resource management and food/water access and availability. Research from the largest study ever completed evaluated 38,700 farms from 119 countries and found that 80% of the farmland is utilized for farm animals to produce meat but produces only 18% of the calories and 37% of the protein. Similarly, the EAT Lancet study brought together 37 experts in the intersection of health and global food sustainability for a population that will soon reach 10 billion. Lead author Dr. Walter Willet said, “Transformation to healthy diets by 2050 will require substantial dietary shifts. Global consumption of fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes will have to double, and consumption of foods such as red meat and sugar will have to be reduced by more than 50%. A diet rich in plant-based foods and with fewer animal source foods confers both improved health and environmental benefits.” These and other similar research studies concluded that a shift away from the consumption of animal products is necessary to preserve critical resources and feed a growing global population.

Dietary recommendations are more than a single meta-analysis or study and it would be foolish to disregard decades of research, both randomized control trials and observational data, linking red and processed meat to an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers. We cannot allow an outlier study to undermine the tested recommendations that provide the greatest protection and prevention for populations around the world. Finally, the food we eat and the way it is produced will have a lasting impact on the global resources that we will be leaving as an inheritance to our children and grandchildren. Therefore it is imperative that we move beyond the gyrations imposed by a myopic view of a sensational headline study and regain focus through a careful review of the research and ongoing scientific dialogue about the impact of our diet on human health and global resources.

The forum mainly consists of four modules: the Plenary Session, company presentation (Pitch & Match), exhibition and 1-on-1 partnering, and a reception sponsored by Simcere Innovation, Inc.

The plenary session began with the welcoming opening remarks from Ms. Xinxin Li, the VP of Strategic Partnership at MyBioGate. The keynote speech “Role of China in the global life science and healthcare” was delivered by the Head of Life Science & Healthcare Relationship Banking at Silicon Valley Bank, Ms. Katherine Andersen.

The keynote was followed by four panel discussion and two featured talks. Panel 1 focused on a new cross-border partnership and new trend of globalization. Panel 2 focused on the strategies of Chinese pharma to meet the domestic and global needs for innovation. Panelist shared their own stories and understanding of “China speed”, the desire of innovation in China, the perception of innovation in the Chinese life science industry, and their diverse strategies & effort of collaborations to move forward. Panel 3 featured C-suites from several Chinese and global biotech and pharma. Focused on the rapidly growing field of oncology. Panel 4 featured a group of BD head from leading biotech and large pharma and discussed the winning recipe of licensing in a competitive landscape. After introducing each of their recent successful licensing cases, panelists actively shared their “secret sauce” of preparing for and executing a successful deal.

The two featured talks introduced the recent regulatory reforms in China and the status and outlook of CAR-T therapy in China, respectively. Dr. Haishan Xiong, senior VP Business Development at FMD K&L, gave the audience a good idea of the major changes of the regulatory landscape in China and pointed out various options for biotech & pharma outside of China to enter this massive market with great potentials. Later on, Dr. William Cao, the President and CEO of Gracell Biotechnologies, systemically introduced the progress of various subtypes of CAR-T therapies in China and its regulatory development.

One of the special session in this forum is Simcere salon and reception, including three special talks given by Drs. Harvey Lodish (Whitehead Insitute), Gordon Freeman (Dana-Farber Cancer Institute), and Alex Xu (CDE/NMPA). Afterwards, the Executive Director of Simcere Innovation Inc., Dr. Shawn Xu gave an introduction of the newly found innovation center in Boston.

The buxom 73-year-old country singer acknowledged her “artificial appearance,” but says she feels “totally real.” Parton knows there are a lot of naysayers who disparage her looks and lifestyle – topics she often jokes about – but she loves the skin she is in and would not have it any other way. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Jazayeri, who helps patients in Newport Beach and Santa Ana, says that Ms. Parton’s take is on the money; the only validation people should seek is their own.

Dr. Jazayeri notes that modern advances in plastic surgery have seen its use spread exponentially among all demographics. Less controversial than ever, plastic surgery has found its way into the mainstream. Dr. Jazayeri adds that people simply want to feel good about their appearance, and more often than not, plastic surgery is intended to either accentuate a person’s most attractive features or either soften or even nullify the not-so-attractive ones. Dr. Jazayeri says that plastic surgery, as well as a growing number of nonsurgical procedures such as Botox, can be compared to getting a new hairstyle or wardrobe. It just about patients feeling and look their best.

Dr. Jazayeri says that, as mentioned earlier, modern cosmetic and plastic surgery patients benefit from procedures and operations that are more effective and have quicker recovery times. He adds that patients seeking procedures ranging from facelifts to breast augmentation can expect expert work that enhances or restores lost confidence due to aging, pregnancy, injuries, or weight loss.

Moreover, more can be done for the appearance than ever before. Dr. Jazayeri notes that one set of procedures, the mommy makeover, is intended to restore areas of a woman’s body that have been negatively affected by pregnancy. The procedure combines a number of plastic surgeries generally including a breast lift and/or augmentation, abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), and liposuction. He adds that the makeover has made many moms feel better about their bodies’ current appearance, restoring confidence to women who may have felt that they no longer looked their best.
