TPA Partnership with Medical Travel Program is Saving Plan Members Up to 80%

Cypress Benefit Administrators

This program not only gives plan members an option to save substantially on surgical care, but it also provides access to some of the most skilled specialists in the world.

A third party administrator (TPA) specializing in self-funded benefits, Cypress Benefit Administrators, a Lucent Health Company, has announced that its newly formed partnership with SkyMedicus is saving the health plans it manages as much as 80% when members travel internationally for medical care.

With this collaboration, Cypress employer-clients are able to offer their employees an option for top-quality care outside the U.S. through carefully credentialed providers and facilities that meet Joint Commission International (JCI) standards and save them significant amounts of money in the process. Surgical procedures are costing considerably less through the network of international providers selected by SkyMedicus, and this medical travel program – also referred to as medical tourism – is eliminating much of the members’ responsibilities for out-of-pocket and deductible costs.

Some of the average savings rates Cypress plan participants are experiencing through SkyMedicus on commonly performed procedures include knee replacements (67%), hip replacements (68%), rotator cuff (70%), gastric bypass (63%), coronary bypass (83%) and angioplasty with stent (42%). Plan participants are also realizing savings on more alternative treatment options for things like cancer care and stem cell therapies.

A TPA since 2000, Cypress has long operated with a focus on containing health benefit costs while still offering top-quality care on behalf of its employer-clients and their employees. The medical travel program has been a solution that addresses both.

“This program not only gives plan members an option to save substantially on surgical care, but it also provides access to some of the most skilled specialists in the world,” explained Tom Doney, president of Cypress. “In working together, we found that SkyMedicus goes through an extremely diligent vetting process and only accepts facilities with a hospital-acquired infection rate of 2% or less.”

As one savings example, SkyMedicus shared that a patient who required surgery for the removal of a large, precancerous breast mass and reconstruction was quoted approximately $18,750 for two separate procedures in the U.S. Using the medical travel program, she was able to have a single procedure done in El Salvador for $6,970 with all travel accommodations included and the deductible waived.

In addition to procedures being coordinated on their behalf, Doney explained that Cypress health plan members benefit from having other corresponding care needs/consults arranged, medical records transferred and travel/lodging accommodations planned. All international locations included in the medical travel program’s network are also visited and assessed for safety before being accepted.

“We are extremely pleased with the results the SkyMedicus program has had for our self-funded clients so far, and the Cypress team is excited to see how this partnership will evolve,” Doney shared.

The wellness economy is now a $4.2 trillion global industry, yet the growth has been largely a private sector phenomenon and off the radar of most government leaders, policymakers and economic developers.

The Global Wellness Institute™ (GWI), a nonprofit research and educational resource for the world wellness industry, today released the second white paper in its “Understanding Wellness” series. The white papers are designed to serve as primers for policymakers, businesspeople, researchers and students on how wellness has become a major force around the world and the ways it will evolve in the future.

This second paper, “Opportunities and Impacts of the Wellness Economy for Regional Development,” outlines the ways a growing wellness industry can facilitate development and growth in countries, regions and communities around the world.

READ THE WHITE PAPER HERE

“The wellness economy is now a $4.2 trillion global industry, yet the growth has been largely a private sector phenomenon and off the radar of most government leaders, policymakers and economic developers,” explained Ophelia Yeung, GWI senior researcher and coauthor of the series.

“We think it’s time governments around the world start paying more attention to this crucial sector, not only because it enables economic development, competitiveness and growth, but because it has massive implications in the arenas of health, urban planning, environmental and cultural sustainability, workforce equity and diversity, social and cultural affairs, and much more,” continued Katherine Johnston, GWI senior researcher and coauthor of the series.

Wellness is now over half the size of global health expenditures, which were estimated at $7.3 trillion in 2015*. As an industry, wellness is a major force in the global economy—close in size to the information and communications technology (ICT) industry and larger than the sports, pharmaceuticals, and travel and tourism industries.

Expect in-depth, digestible analysis on the following topics:

Wellness is an economic growth driver.

  • Employment creation and small business development
  • Promotion of locally sourced, produced and branded products
  • Women’s empowerment and benefits to families

Wellness improves public health.

  • Improving health equity by engaging wellness workers in the community
  • Addressing the growing mental health epidemic
  • Harnessing indigenous wellness knowledge, traditions and modalities

Clinicians Not Consistent With Guidelines When Managing HIV/HCV Coinfection

“In many cases where learners initially selected an option that differed from the guidelines, they indicated that they would change their treatment plan to match the guidelines after using the tool.” – Edward King, Executive Vice President of CCO

Many healthcare providers showed discordance from guideline recommendations in their first-line treatment selection for patients coinfected with HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV), according to an analysis of data from an online treatment decision support tool developed by Clinical Care Options (CCO) during the past year.

The online tool allows users to define a patient case scenario using variables, such as current HIV therapy, HCV genotype, and liver histology, and receive instant recommendations from published guidelines. In more than one third of the 972 cases entered into the online tool between August 2018 and August 2019, users selected treatments that were inconsistent with guideline recommendations. Key areas of inconsistency involved user choices that were suboptimal due to drug–drug interactions, specific HCV genotype or HIV drug resistance, or the patient’s renal function or HLA-B*5701 status.

“In many cases where learners initially selected an option that differed from the guidelines, they indicated that they would change their treatment plan to match the guidelines after using the tool,” said Edward King, Executive Vice President of CCO. “Decision support tools such as this may improve outcomes for people coinfected with HIV and hepatitis C by helping healthcare providers to make optimal treatment choices.”

The results were presented October 3 at IDWeek 2019 in Washington, DC, and can be reviewed at https://www.clinicaloptions.com/publications/2019/10_2019_hcvhivcoinfection

Safety Tips for Seniors During Fire Prevention Week

In observance of Fire Prevention Week, Home Instead Senior Care wants to help older adults identify potential fire risks in their homes. For family members or family caregivers, Fire Prevention Week is the perfect time to have a conversation about fire safety with aging loved ones, as they may be particularly vulnerable in the event of a fire.

For example, over time, a decrease in sensory skills can make it difficult for seniors to identify signs of a fire. They may not smell natural gas or burning food. Vision impairments can contribute to depth perception issues, increasing risks related to placing flammable items near open flames, such as candles or stovetops.

“As we age, it’s natural that we lose the full-capacity of our senses,” explains Lakelyn Hogan, Gerontologist and Caregiver Advocate at Home Instead Senior Care. “Because their senses can’t protect them like they once could, we must take time for extra precautions to help seniors protect themselves in other ways from fire risks.”

Additional factors that can put seniors at increased risk include memory loss and limited mobility. Memory loss can be a dangerous factor when a senior forgets to turn off the oven, blow out a candle or clean out the lint drawer in the dryer. For those with mobility challenges, they may need assistance to evacuate in the event of a fire, especially for those living in a multilevel dwelling, such as an apartment where elevators will not be in use and they must exit by stairs.

Home Instead Senior Care offers these five tips to help reduce the risk of fire loss in your home or the home of a loved one:

  • Install Senior-Friendly Smoke Alarms – Smoke alarms are imperative in ensuring the safety of a senior in their home. Family members should conduct routine checks on smoke alarms to make sure they are working. Consider installing alarms that use voice-technology to alert of a fire. Hearing a voice may be more distinguishable for a senior than a beeping noise.
  • Use Candle Alternatives – Candles create great fire risks in the home. They are easily forgotten. Wall plug-in lights are a smart alternative to open-flame candles for seniors to decrease the risk of catching nearby objects on fire.
  • Make Fire Extinguishers Accessible – Do not store fire extinguishers in hard-to-reach places or out of sight from the kitchen. Seniors should keep fire extinguishers in easy-to-reach places where they can get them quickly.
  • Keep Outlets Clear – Electric malfunctions are a leading cause of house fires. Make sure to keep flammable items away from outlets. Also, do not plug too many devices into an outlet. This is especially true in the winter months, when electricity use is high and people put up seasonal decorations.
  • Set-up an evacuation plan – For seniors with limited mobility, or those that live alone, establish a plan for evacuation in the event of a fire. Practice that plan to make sure your aging loved one knows how to get out. This may include getting neighbors involved to ensure someone is available and prepared to assist in the event that evacuation becomes necessary.

Delivering Operational Consistency, Quality & Reproducibility to Preclinical Pharma, Upcoming Webinar Hosted by Xtalks

https://www.prweb.com/

Xtalks Life Science Webinars

Both at the sponsor and the contract service provider, value takes the form of price, delivery time, reputation, transparency and security — the kind of efficiencies a software investment is expected to provide.

Fewer than 50 percent of preclinical research studies, conducted at a cost of $28 billion per year, are reproducible. Rigor in bioanalytical method validation is emerging in the form of a global standard: preclinical studies are increasingly outsourced (by some estimates, more than half of the time) and senior scientists add the management of an offshore team to their duties.

How can software increase the reproducibility of preclinical research studies amid the shift towards outsourcing and the convergence of regulation and expectations?

Both at the sponsor and the contract service provider, value takes the form of price, delivery time, reputation, transparency and security — the kind of efficiencies a software investment is expected to provide.

Join Graeme Dennis, Commercial Director of Preclinical Pharma at IDBS in a live webinar on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at 10am EDT (3pm BST/UK) where attendees will learn about:

  • What sets apart a successful preclinical informatics implementation
  • How the software market has responded to the shift to outsourcing
  • Where competitive advantage may be gained for outsourced pharma
  • Why software can help improve reproducibility in preclinical studies

This webinar will examine how the deployment of tools in a unit operations or “Workflow-as-a-Service” context can enable reproducible, consistent and transparent work at the scientist bench — while delivering sponsor value at the same time.

For more information or to register for this event, visit Workflow-as-a-Service: Delivering Operational Consistency, Quality & Reproducibility to Preclinical Pharma.

Jessi Freitag and Wade Brooks from LivBar, with Susan Schechter (middle) OOC Board Treasurer

LivBar is honored to be recognized by the Oregon Organic Coalition. We take great pride in making our bars organic and hope to use this award to further educate consumers about the benefits of supporting organic products.

To be considered for this prestigious award, nominees are required to qualify in a variety of categories, including innovation in organic practices; service to the industry; expansion of organic business opportunities; and overall achievement in the state’s organic trade.

The recipients of the 2019 Oregon Organic Coalition (OOC) Awards for Excellence were presented awards by OOC leadership during a statewide tour of recipient individuals and organizations. Susan Schechter, OOC Board Treasurer, presented LivBar’s award in Salem to CEO Wade Brooks and Director of Marketing and Operations Jessi Freitag.

Brooks said, “LivBar is honored to be recognized by the Oregon Organic Coalition. We take great pride in making our bars organic and hope to use this award to further educate consumers about the benefits of supporting organic products.”

“We’d like to thank the Oregon Organic Coalition for their support of organic companies like LivBar,” Freitag said. “Everyone at LivBar is passionate about living and buying organic and also sustainability practices, such as compostable packaging. Together we can make real change in the consumer packaged goods industry!”

LivBar is setting a new standard for energy bars by creating a bar that is made from organic, whole food in a planet-friendly compostable wrapper. LivBar recently publicly challenged energy bar juggernaut CLIF Bar, and the bar community at large, to switch to compostable packaging in addition to all-organic ingredients. LivBar also does not use a co-packer and instead hand-bakes every bar in Oregon, creating and keeping organic product manufacturing jobs in the state.

This latest award for LivBar comes directly on the heels of the company’s nomination as one of the top gluten free snack bars by the Gluten Free Awards and their win as “Entrepreneur of the Year” from SEDCOR. Earlier in the year, LivBar was awarded “Most Mindful Consumer Packaged Good” by the Mindful Awards.

LivBars are currently available online at Amazon Prime, Amazon Subscribe and Save, direct from the LivBar website (http://www.livbar.com), and in hundreds of stores including Erewhon, New Seasons Markets, Market of Choice, Zupan’s, Garden Bar, and Roth’s Fresh Markets.
