Wellness Resource Support Helps Caregivers and Patients Better Manage Medical Care

Wellness Resource Support

Wellness Resource Support helps patients and caregivers find the resources they need to manage their medical care.

“After meeting so many families in search of guidance and support for their loved ones, I came up with the idea of creating an online community with information and resources to help patients, their families, and caregivers get answers to their most challenging medical questions.”

Wellness Resource Support is a new member services website launching this month to help patients and caregivers find the resources they need to manage their medical care. As healthcare remains a popular topic for debate among today’s community and political leaders, we hear endless discussions about insurance and how to pay for care. Covering the expense of healthcare is important, but even greater issues exist relating to how care is managed. Wellness Resource Support’s membership community now offers guidance, resources, and tools to those facing challenging decisions about their health and medical care.

Too many patients and caregivers are confronted with medical terminology and scenarios that they don’t understand when they or a loved one falls ill. Things seem to move at warp speed and important decisions need to be made quickly. Wellness Resource Support’s founder and CEO, Robyn Maniscalco, had this very experience when her mother was hospitalized after having a severe stroke.

The type of stroke Maniscalco’s mother experienced was rare and led to a lot of uncertainty and unknowns. She soon learned that doctors and medical staff often may not have the time (or take the time) to fully explain conditions, options, and support resources to patients, their caregivers, and family.

“It took many hours of independent research, reading, and questioning to find useful information, tools, and resources that helped my family support my mother through this difficult time,” explains Maniscalco. “As I learned more, I helped others I met along the way in similar circumstances. After meeting so many families in search of guidance and support for their loved ones, I came up with the idea of creating an online community with information and resources to help patients, their families, and caregivers get answers to their most challenging medical questions.”

Just after her stroke, Maniscalco’s mother was in a coma followed by eight months of being in a vegetative state. The challenges of caring for an immobile person were draining physically, mentally, and emotionally. Based on the challenges faced in her caregiving journey, Maniscalco worked with her team to create a guide with resources for other caregivers. About Robyn Maniscalco

After experiencing a lack of information, patience, and support from doctors and medical staff during her mother’s rare and critical illness, Robyn Maniscalco devoted herself to creating Wellness Resource Support, an online membership community helping patients, their families, and caregivers to manage medical care. With a background of years in corporate America, Robyn has put her business acumen to work alongside her passion for helping people who are facing life-changing diseases and illnesses. She also loves to travel the world in search of the perfect sunsets. Robyn resides in New Jersey with her dog, Cinnamon, and her cat, Minimoo.

Wieland Group and Sospes Expand Their Environmental, Health & Safety Software Partnership

To date, our incident rate has reflected a 42% Year-Over-Year improvement.

Wieland-Werke AG (“Wieland Group”), a world-wide leading supplier of semi-finished copper and copper alloy products, has elected to expand its use of Sospes’ EHS management software as its environmental, health and safety platform partner for its U.S. operations. Sospes’ EHS software improves communication between workers and their companies, creating a collaborative environment for improving safety and productivity. Global Brass and Copper, recently acquired by Wieland, implemented Sospes in its United States facilities in 2018 and was well-received by employees and managers in supporting their EH&S program.

“As a U.S. manufacturer, continuous improvement and lean management is required in order to remain competitive and responsive to our customers,” said Joe Wickenhauser, Leader Safety & Security. “This means we are continually looking for tools that support improvement and efficiency efforts. In 2018, we partnered with Sospes to create efficiencies in our reporting and inspection processes and to compile the resulting metrics in a manner that effectively drives resource allocation. To date, our incident rate has reflected a 42% Year-Over-Year improvement. While we have a lot of activities directed at lowering our injury rate, Sospes definitely deserves some of the credit for this improved performance.”

With Wieland’s July acquisition of Global Brass and Copper, it was important to ensure that the shared commitment to worker safety was consistently supported across the combined company. By partnering with Sospes, Wieland is able to maintain that safety environment through the mobile application and therefore ensure continued worker and company success.

“The Wieland Group is recognized globally as a leader in non-ferrous metals production, not only for technological innovation but for their commitment to sustainability and the environment,” said Tom Carson, President of Sospes. “It is humbling to work with a company that is a 200-year-old success story and we are proud to have been selected as their partner in safety management. We look forward to supporting their commitment to worker safety and continuous process improvement.”

Bastyr University Celebrates 5th Year of the Center for Social Justice and Diversity With Healthy Equity Speaker Series

News Image

“We are excited to kick off our Health Equity Speaker Series with Dr. Church and Dr. Hayes, two renowned experts in the fields of health care,” said Center for Social Justice and Diversity Director, Daniel Rosen, PhD.

The Center for Social Justice and Diversity (CSJD) at Bastyr University celebrates its fifth year this Fall Quarter! The Center, together with the Bastyr’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, is beginning a Health Equity Speaker Series that will include presenters from varying disciplines. The event will commence on October 23rd in a conversation centered around, “What is Health? The Need for Health Equity.” The inaugural guest speakers include Daniel K. Church, PhD, Bastyr University President Emeritus, and Maxine Hayes, MD, MPH, FAAP, former Washington State Health Officer. The event is free and open to the public.

Health Equity is the concept that everyone deserves and should have a fair opportunity to attain their full health potential. Equal access to health care remains a key barrier to providing quality care to all patients. Bastyr’s speaker series will highlight the differences in access to preventative and curative health care for diverse populations and will focus on solutions that create opportunities for health equity in the U.S. as well as globally.

“We are excited to kick off our Health Equity Speaker Series with Dr. Church and Dr. Hayes, two renowned experts in the fields of health care,” said Center for Social Justice and Diversity Director, Daniel Rosen, PhD. “Equal access to quality care is one of the most critical issues facing the health care community.”

The speaker series is part of the CSJD Student Leadership Certificate Program, thus is spearheaded by a two-person student team. Naturopathic medical resident Dr. Gena Poling (MPH ’18, ND ’19), and naturopathic medical student Paula Mitchell have co-led this project from the moment of inception. “We are excited to be making this happen and we hope to have as many people in attendance as possible,” says Mitchell. “Our hope is that through this series, more people will better understand and think more critically about this issue.”

Bastyr’s Center for Social Justice and Diversity was established in 2014 and was named after President Emeritus Dr. Daniel K. Church upon his retirement from the University in June of 2015. Among numerous programs, the Center offers training in restorative practices, a Student Leadership Certificate Program, the CSJD Research Lab, and the Michelle Eustache Human Library Project. The Center also hosts weekly Real Talk Community Circles around pertinent social justice concepts and monthly dialogue groups for students of color, students who identify as LGBTQIA, and those interested in challenging white privilege. Additional events, such as visits from student groups, guest speakers and celebrations are scheduled throughout the year.

CEUs for the Health Equity Speaker Series will be available for NDs, MDs and LMHCs licensed in Washington State for a processing fee of $20. Registration for CEUs will be available onsite.

About Dr. Daniel K. Church

Dr. Church considered it a priority for all Bastyr graduates to be culturally responsible practitioners and professionals, and thus created the Center for Social Justice and Diversity (CSJD) in 2014. The University named the Center in his honor in 2015. The Center celebrates five years of service this year.

Tips on What to Know and Expect

https://www.prweb.com/

Dr. Constance Chen

Liposuction is designed for removal of excess fat deposits and is most successfully performed on young fit patients with good skin elasticity.

In an era of “selfies” and social media postings, many people are self-conscious about appearance – a major reason why body-contouring procedures are becoming more popular. “The best way to improve abdominal shape is via diet, exercise, and a healthy lifestyle,” says Dr. Constance M Chen. “Patients who are still unhappy with the shape of their abdomen despite already being at or near their ideal body weight, however, can consult with an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon,” says Dr. Chen. A plastic surgeon can help patients determine whether procedures such as a tummy tuck, liposuction or a combination may be able to help enhance their appearance.

“Liposuction is designed for removal of excess fat deposits and is most successfully performed on young fit patients with good skin elasticity,” explains Dr. Chen. “It can also be a useful adjunct to help finesse results of other body contouring procedures by smoothing out and sculpting targeted areas to look more naturally proportionate.”

For patients with excess skin or stretch marks, however, a more extensive surgical procedure, such as an abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck, will most likely be needed, says Dr. Chen. Stretch marks are a sign that the dermis has been damaged, and the skin has lost its elasticity in that area. Exercise cannot force the skin to revert to its original shape.

“Many people increase in abdominal girth as they age. In particular, the abdomen of a pregnant woman stretches enormously to accommodate a growing new life. If the skin is over-stretched, it cannot snap back to its original form,” she notes.

Since liposuction does not involve removing skin, a patient who has saggy skin and undergoes abdominal liposuction will not achieve an optimal cosmetic result. In fact, the procedure may only make the area look worse,” Dr. Chen says.

An abdominoplasty not only removes unneeded skin, it can smooth the tummy “bulge” that develops in some patients, primarily women, by correcting and tightening abdominal muscles that have thinned, separated and weakened – a condition called rectus diastasis.

“Rectus diastasis makes it difficult for a patient to lift objects and may cause lower back pain, weakened pelvic alignment and altered posture,” Dr. Chen says. Her comments are supported by a study published in a 2018 issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery®, in which authors indicate that abdominoplasty is not simply cosmetic. According to the authors, tummy-tuck surgery with abdominal-muscle repair can reduce back pain and urinary incontinence in women after their child-bearing years.

Meanwhile, earlier studies tout the benefits of lipoabdominoplasty – a combination of tummy tuck and liposuction – to enhance cosmetic results and minimize surgical trauma to tissues. With lipoabdominoplasty, surgeons perform both abdominoplasty and liposuction to eliminate loose skin and excess fat deposits.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports tummy tucks are among the top five cosmetic surgical procedures in the United States, with more than 130,000 of them performed in 2018. Liposuction procedures exceed 250,500, but this total includes removal of fat from areas of the body other than just abdomen, such as hips, thighs, buttocks and neck.

But, back to “selfies.”

Not only does the right surgical approach improve personal appearance and correct physical problems, for some people it can also offer psychological benefits, including enhanced self-image, self-esteem and perceived quality of life. In the August 2019 issue of the Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery, a study of 38 patients who had undergone aesthetic liposuction found improved emotional stability, reduced anxiety and higher satisfaction with their life and general state of health when compared to their preoperative state.

Sometimes, patients practice healthier lifestyles following a tummy tuck or a liposuction because they want to maintain their new “look” by avoiding future weight gain.

To those who are potential candidates for cosmetic surgery, Dr. Chen offers these tips:

  • Don’t consider cosmetic surgery as an alternative to exercise and healthy eating for weight reduction.
  • Understand the risks, including infection and permanent scarring, associated with any surgical procedure.
  • Know that cosmetic surgery like liposuction can permanently eliminate fat deposits from targeted areas but not stop one’s ability overall to gain weight.
  • Delay a tummy tuck if another pregnancy is possible in your future.

Whether liposuction, tummy tuck, or both, the end goal is to feel good about what you see when looking in a mirror. Ultimately, however, surgery is limited in what it can accomplish,” says Dr. Chen. “Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is the key to both inner and outer beauty.”

Constance M. Chen, MD, is a New York City-based, board-certified plastic surgeon with special expertise in the use of innovative natural techniques to optimize medical and cosmetic outcomes for women undergoing breast reconstruction. She operates out of Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, and is Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery (Plastic Surgery) at Weill Cornell Medical College and Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery (Plastic Surgery) at Tulane University School of Medicine. http://www.constancechenmd.com

USOSM Forms Partnership with Clark Holmes Oral Facial Surgery

https://www.prweb.com/

Dr. Jon D. Holmes, Clark Holmes Oral Facial Surgery of Alabama, says patients are the most important part of the practice and a driving factor behind the partnership.

It’s the best solution we’ve seen in the marketplace.

U.S. Oral Surgery Management (USOSM) – a specialty management services company headquartered in Irving, Texas, that exclusively serves premier oral and maxillofacial surgeons – has formed a new partnership with Clark Holmes Oral Facial Surgery of Alabama, an oral and maxillofacial surgery practice with four locations throughout the state, and USOSM’s first partnership in Alabama. This news comes on the heels of last week’s announcement of the company’s partnership with Dakota Valley Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, USOSM’s first partner practice in Minnesota.

“Clark Holmes Oral Facial Surgery of Alabama is one of the oldest and most well respected practices in the state of Alabama. It is an honor for us to partner with them. We intend to develop additional relationships in Alabama and throughout the Southeast,” says Richard Hall, USOSM president and CEO. “USOSM now has partner practices that span six states: Texas, Colorado, Georgia, Tennessee, Minnesota and Alabama.”

Clark Holmes Oral Facial Surgery of Alabama has three surgeons operating out of four Alabama offices: one in Trussville, one in Gardendale and two in Birmingham. The surgeons of Clark Holmes Oral Facial Surgery of Alabama practice a full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery with expertise ranging from corrective jaw surgery to wisdom tooth removal. In addition, they can diagnose and treat facial pain and facial injuries and perform a wide range of dental implant and bone grafting procedures. The surgeons are Dr. Mark Clark, DMD, MD; Dr. Jon D. Holmes, DMD, MD, FACS, FICD; and Dr. Blake Smith, DMD, MD.

“At Clark Holmes, our patients are the most important part of our practice,” says Dr. Holmes. “That’s why we chose to partner with U.S. Oral Surgery Management. Some management services companies have a reputation for coming in and taking over practices. USOSM does not. The people there have a reputation for doing what they say and for doing things right. When they say they’ll leave patient care up to us, they’ll leave patient care up to us; and that’s why we want to partner with them. It’s the best solution we’ve seen in the marketplace.”

A shared services organization, USOSM collaborates with premier oral and maxillofacial surgeons to offer a partnership solution for continued and accelerated practice success. USOSM provides operational, marketing and administrative support services, reinvests resources, and applies best practices to improve clinical and financial performance and produce steadier, more profitable growth for all.

The founders of Optimum Health have announced the opening of their Louisville weight loss clinic, Weigh Less Louisville. The new office opening is in line with the practice’s goal of making health solutions easily accessible to as many people as possible. The clinic is the only provider of the European-style natural weight loss program in the whole of Louisville.

“As a whole, Europeans are generally healthier and don’t suffer from the same rates of obesity as we Americans do. This is what droves us to Europe to study the Europeans lifestyle and their practices of healthy living. We don’t use pills, injections, or surgery. Everything we offer is 100% natural and sustainable.” said Rosum, CEO of Weigh Less Louisville.

The co-founders of Weigh Less Louisville, Jeff Rosum and David Seastedt are published authors on the subject of weight loss and have been invited to speak all over the country on behalf of their natural European weight loss program.

Award-Winning Visual Studio Exposes Opioid Abuse Malpractice

This opioid addiction animation was created to highlight where the brain feels and responds to addiction and pain.

High Impact built this opioid addiction animation to highlight where the brain feels and responds to addiction and pain.

“We are determined to help attorneys highlight the damage caused by this opioid malpractice epidemic, so they can instill audiences with the knowledge needed to deter negligent conduct,” said High Impact CEO Jordan Halperin.

High Impact, LLC, is working with attorneys across the country to shed light on the shady practices through which doctors overprescribe opioids to their patients – which most recently resulted in the death of a 40-year-old woman in a monumental case the visual litigation studio helped win.

“We are determined to help attorneys highlight the damage caused by this opioid malpractice epidemic, so they can instill audiences with the knowledge needed to deter negligent conduct,” said High Impact CEO Jordan Halperin.

The most common medical error involved in these opioid abuse cases is failing to recognize obvious signs of opioid addiction, and then continuing to overprescribe higher doses of medication instead of addressing the patient’s addiction. The impact of this decision can severely disrupt the patient’s brain and, if left unchecked, may ultimately result in the patient’s death.

One way to discourage opioid abuse malpractice is to expose how it’s happening, demonstrate how easily it can be avoided, and educate jurors on why they need to send a clear message that neglecting patients who suffer from opioid addiction won’t be tolerated and must be punished.

High Impact recently helped expose one of these types of opioid abuse malpractice cases after a doctor ignored a woman’s obvious signs of addiction and continued overprescribing higher doses and varieties of pain medication until she died. The Voirst Law Firm needed to show why the Doctor should have clearly recognized that his patient was suffering from opioid addiction. High Impact built a visual timeline to flag each of these risk factors as they stacked up and went ignored for months. The case was successfully negotiated for a significant amount, as reported in the Denver Post.

Other applications of High Impact’s work in opioid cases include showing the massive uptick in medications a patient had been prescribed over time, comparing the right decisions a doctor could have made versus the wrong decisions that ended in a horrible outcome, visually stacking up risk factors that contributed to disaster, and mapping out the neuropsychological impact opioids had on a patient’s brain. In addition to opioid-related cases, High Impact has and continues to provide attorneys with a wide range of custom visual solutions that are strategically used in trials to illustrate different facets of medical malpractice cases.

High Impact is the nation’s leading visual litigation studio, providing illustrations, animations, and interactive presentations for the top law firms across all 50 states. Their award-winning team of visual strategists, artists, doctors, and developers build and customize visual strategies for any case involving personal injury, medical malpractice, product liability, motor vehicle collisions, and environmental law – and have helped win some of the biggest, most high-profile verdicts and settlements in the country.
