Selecting Cognitive & Behavioral Endpoint Measures for Trials in Rare Epilepsy and MPS Disorders, Upcoming Webinar Hosted by Xtalks

https://www.prweb.com/

Xtalks Life Science Webinars

Several case examples of current trials will be shared, with a focus on differential outcome measures and rationale for their use.

Clinical trials in patients with rare forms of epilepsy and MPS disorders present considerable challenges, as patients with these conditions are heterogeneous and many are quite impaired. Further, comorbid sensory and motor deficits are common as are disruptive behaviors. Additionally, these diseases are often regressive, making the assessment of cognition and behavior even more complex.

On Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at 11am EST (4pm GMT/UK), join Dr. Pamela Ventola, Senior Science Director of Pediatrics and Rare Disease at Cogstate in a live webinar where she will describe the critical factors to consider when selecting cognitive and behavioral endpoints for these trials, including perspectives from regulatory agencies.

Dr. Ventola will describe common measures such as developmental assessments (e.g., Bayley-4 and Mullen), the Wechsler Scales, Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children-Second Edition and the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales-Third Edition. She will differentiate between the measures so attendees will be better positioned to select outcome assessments based on the specific indication and needs of the trial.

Several case examples of current trials will be shared, with a focus on differential outcome measures and rationale for their use.

Annual Cocaine, Meth & Stimulant Summit Returns for 2nd Year

News Image

HMP, a leader in healthcare events and education, announces the annual Cocaine, Meth & Stimulant Summit returns for its second year, November 8-10, in Miami, Florida. The Cocaine, Meth & Stimulant Summit is the only educational event providing clinical, law enforcement, and public safety professionals with practical strategies and solutions to address the country’s stimulant crisis, an often underrecognized emergency compounding the opioid epidemic.

The 2019 summit features a clinical track as well as a law enforcement and public safety track. Attendees can earn up to 16 CE/CMEs, plus an additional 3 ethics credits.

What: Cocaine, Meth & Stimulant Summit

When: November 8-10, 2019

Following an introduction from Jorge Colina, Chief of Police at the Miami Police Department, the Summit will kick off with a keynote address from John L. Eadie, MPA, a coordinator with the National Emerging Threats Initiative, administered by the Office of National Drug Control Policy on November 8, 2019 at 9:00 AM EST. With 44 years’ experience within the public health field, Eadie has served in management, executive, and consulting capacities, directing the New York State Department of Health’s pharmaceutical diversion program from 1985 to 1995. Eadie will present the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Initiative’s (HIDTA) latest findings to be used by clinicians, law enforcement, and public safety personnel to design appropriate interdiction, prevention, and treatment programs.

Sheriff Mark Lamb, Pinal County, Arizona will speak on November 9, 2019 at 4:00 PM EST. Elected in 2017, Sheriff Lamb leads initiatives to address the stimulant crisis by developing relationships with mental and behavioral health providers throughout the county. In addition to its specialized narcotics and anti-smuggling teams, the Sheriff’s office works with federal partners to combat human and drug trafficking in Pinal County. Sheriff Lamb has appeared on A&E Network’s Live PD and 60 Days In.

Where: Hyatt Regency Miami, 400 South East Second Ave, Miami, FL 33131

Why:

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), roughly 14,000 cocaine users and 10,000 meth users died in the United States in 2017, an increase of more than a third compared with 2016 and triple the number of deaths in 2012. That puts stimulant deaths on par with the opioid depressant heroin, which was involved in 15,000 overdose deaths in 2017. The Cocaine, Meth & Stimulant Summit brings together law enforcement and treatment providers to discuss strategies and find solutions.

Lumicell Initiates Pivotal Trial for Breast Cancer Surgical Guidance Solution

The Lumicell Imaging Systems reaches major milestone toward FDA submission for approval.

Lumicell has begun its pivotal trial of the Lumicell Imaging System for breast cancer.

With this pivotal trial, the system gets an important step closer to FDA approval, but more importantly, patients and physicians are one step closer to having an innovative technology available for care.

Lumicell, Inc., an innovation leader in image guided cancer surgery, today announced it has begun its pivotal trial of the Lumicell Imaging System for breast cancer — a major milestone on its path toward FDA submission for approval. The two-arm, randomized pivotal study follows completion of our feasibility clinical study of 234 patients at 16 sites. In the pivotal study, the technology will be used on 170 patients at up to 20 large academic centers and community breast cancer centers for intraoperative detection and removal of residual cancer in breast conserving surgery.

“This is an exciting moment for breast cancer patients and their physicians. Since the very beginning, I’ve been encouraged by the results generated using the Lumicell System,” said Barbara Smith, MD, PhD, lead investigator of the Lumicell breast cancer trials. Dr. Smith, Director of the Breast Program at Massachusetts General Hospital and Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, also shared, “with this pivotal trial, the system gets an important step closer to FDA approval, but more importantly, patients and physicians are one step closer to having an innovative technology available for care.”

Breast-conserving surgery is a critical first step in the treatment for many women with breast cancer with the goal of removing all cancer cells while minimizing the removal of healthy tissue. However, today, surgeons do not have adequate tools to determine in real-time if all the cancer has been removed during the initial surgery; instead, patients must wait multiple days after surgery to find out if all the cancer has been completely removed. Unfortunately, for 1 in 4 breast cancer patients, cancer cells are found at the margins of the removed tissue, suggesting cancer cells may remain in the cavity, typically requiring patients to undergo a second surgery to remove the remaining cancer.

The Lumicell System was developed to enable surgeons to see and remove residual cancer in real-time, in vivo, during the initial surgery — with the goal of reducing the risk of second surgeries and cancer recurrence. The system is designed to minimize healthy tissue removal while integrating easily into the surgical workflow.

“We are very excited to move into the pivotal trial stage for the Lumicell System,” said Andrey Zarur, PhD, Executive Chairman at Lumicell. “We believe we have developed a trial design which will be compelling to patients and surgeons, demonstrate the clinical benefit of using the system in the treatment of breast cancer and generate data to submit for FDA approval.”

The Lumicell System is potentially useful for surgical guidance in the removal of numerous other cancer types, and it is currently being tested in feasibility trials for treatment of prostate, brain, colorectal, esophageal and pancreatic cancers, as well as peritoneal metastases from primary ovarian and colon cancers.

For more information about Lumicell’s clinical trials, visit http://www.lumicell.com/clinical-trials/clinical-trials.php.

About Lumicell, Inc.

Lumicell is a technology leader in the field of image-guided cancer surgery. The company is developing a novel system that enables real-time detection of tumor tissue in patients so that no cancer cells are left behind during surgery. The company’s Lumicell System has unprecedented ability to see and guide removal of cancer cells remaining in the surgical cavity – beyond the margin of the specimen – and has the potential to significantly improve surgical outcomes and reduce healthcare costs by eliminating the need for repeat surgeries. Lumicell is investigating the Lumicell System in patients undergoing surgery for breast cancer, ovarian cancer, prostate cancer, brain cancer, colorectal, esophageal and pancreatic cancers. Additional future indications are planned to include perfusion, wound care and infection, and surgeries for lung, and liver cancers. For more information, please visit http://www.lumicell.com.

“Health and fitness have always been priorities in our lives,” says Dawn. “We’ve taught our kids the importance of staying active and couldn’t think of a better way to share our passion than by opening a business that allows us to help our very active community stay fit,” she adds.

Since its inception, Fitness Machine Technicians has been committed to delivering reliable service/repair and preventive maintenance services to customers across the nation. With more than 35 years’ experience in the fitness industry, Chief Executive and Founder Don Powers created a company that puts its customers first.

Kolmac Outpatient Recovery Centers Opens New Frederick Addiction Treatment Center

Wayne Sensor, CEO at Kolmac

Wayne Sensor, CEO at Kolmac

Our team is excited to expand our reach into Frederick and Western Maryland. We believe that the people in this community can benefit from highly effective outpatient addiction treatment that allows them to continue living at home and going to work.

Kolmac Outpatient Recovery Centers continues to expand its network of addiction treatment locations with a new center in Frederick, Maryland. The new Frederick addiction treatment center opened on October 23rd and provides comprehensive treatment services, including an intensive outpatient (IOP) program.

Founder and Chief Innovation Officer George Kolodner MD developed IOP and established Kolmac in 1973. Since then, the team has provided flexible and effective treatment that has helped more than 30,000 men and women recover from addiction.

Exploring Kolmac’s new location in Frederick

This new clinic location will first offer an evening IOP program. Due to the program’s flexibility, it is the most popular offering for patients. The Frederick addiction treatment center will also later offer a daytime IOP program for patients who would prefer to attend treatment during the day.

The public can also expect the Frederick location to soon launch a continuing care program to serve the first group of patients completing the eight-week IOP program. In keeping with its roots, Kolmac will provide family support resources and develop specific continuing care groups to meet the needs of the patient populations in the area.

Kolmac will staff this new location with licensed and experienced addiction treatment professionals. To meet the needs of patients with coexisting mental health issues, the Frederick addiction treatment center will have a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner onsite.

According to Kolmac CEO Wayne Sensor, “Our team is excited to expand our reach into Frederick and Western Maryland to help even more patients recover from addiction. We believe that the people in this community can benefit from highly effective outpatient addiction treatment that allows them to continue living at home and going to work.”

Kolmac expands to meet a growing need

Frederick is a growing community, and like all areas of the country, has addiction treatment needs. Kolmac selected this location because it saw an opportunity to make a difference for the residents. “Addiction continues to be a problem across the United States. Our goal is to expand into growing and vibrant communities like Frederick. This will allow us to reach even more men and women as they fight to take their lives back from addiction,” Sensor explains.

About Kolmac
