The Trevor Project Raises More Than $1.2 Million at TrevorLIVE Los Angeles Gala

The Trevor Project, the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) young people, hosted its 2019 TrevorLIVE Los Angeles fundraising gala at The Beverly Hilton where it honored Cybill Shepherd, Hayley Kiyoko, and the PwC Charitable Foundation, Inc., which announced a $6 million investment in The Trevor Project’s mission. Zazie Beetz and Sasheer Zamata hosted the event, which helped raise more than $1.2 million and included show-stopping performances by singer-songwriter Grace VanderWaal and the world’s top Beyoncé impersonator, Miss Shalae.

Additional attendees included Heidi Klum, Jesse Williams, Samira Wiley, Jane Lynch, Debby Ryan, Lance Bass, Jonathan Tucker, Madison Beer, drag personalities Raja & Nina West, Eugene Lee Yang, EJ Johnson, Gigi Gorgeous, Nats Getty, August Getty, Chris Daughtry, Terrell Carter, Alyson Stoner, Bruce Vilanch, Cassandra Cass, Charlie Barnett, Chester Lockhart, Daniel Franzese, Gregory Zarian, Ian Alexander, Jen Richards, John Flanagan, Lawrence Zarian, Mark Tennyson, Michael D. Cohen, Michael Turchin, Mikalah Gordon, Miss Shalae, Morgxn, Obiageliaku, On Mekahel, Parson James, Ryan Russell, and Sisterhood Band.

Highlights from the organization’s annual star-studded fundraiser included:

  • Jane Lynch presented the Champion Award to Cybill Shepherd: “Cybill is being honored tonight because, for many decades, she has been a vocal advocate for LGBTQ rights and full equality… For years, Cybill Shepherd has been boldly, fearlessly and loudly making the case that everyone deserves acceptance, no matter who they love.”
  • In an emotional acceptance speech, Champion Award honoree Cybill Shepherd tearfully thanked her late sister, who was unable to live openly as a lesbian. “No, my sister did not have the support that these young people will be getting from this wonderful, wonderful organization; and so, I want to thank everyone here tonight, because we all have in our lives people that we would have liked to have saved.” Shepherd continued, “My sister lived the life she wanted to live, but she didn’t live it openly. Gladys Terry Shepherd, I thank you from the bottom of my heart, for the honor of being here tonight.”
  • “We’re thrilled to announce that the PwC Charitable Foundation is investing $6 million over the next four years… the largest grant ever received by The Trevor Project,” said Yolanda Seals-Coffield, President of the PwC Charitable Foundation, Inc. “PwC (the company) is thrilled to announce now that they will be providing nearly $2 million in pro-bono consulting services and our subject matter experiences in people, technology, and business transformation to complement the PwC Foundation’s investment,” added Shannon Schuyler, PwC’s Chief Purpose & Inclusion Officer.
  • Hayley Kiyoko accepted the Youth Innovator Award, stating: “So many LGBTQ youth don’t have that same support in their own communities. It is our duty to share our strength to help guide the ones that get lost in the dark. I’m very proud to be standing here today, and I thank you all for continuing to inspire others by existing.”
  • “There is still so much more to do. We recently put out research that there are more than 1.8 million LGBTQ young people in the US who seriously consider suicide each year,” said Amit Paley, CEO of The Trevor Project. “One day, we will reach every single one of those young people in crisis. But we’re not there yet. And we don’t have the luxury of growing slowly. We are literally talking about life and death. That is why we need to build a global movement to end suicide among LGBTQ young people NOW. “
  • Eugene Lee Yang surprised seventeen-year-old high school senior Julia Lacher, who traveled all the way from Somerset, Wis., to share her story reaching out to The Trevor Project for support after watching a Try Guys video about Eugene volunteering at the organization.

The proud presenting sponsors of this year’s TrevorLIVE LA are the PwC Charitable Foundation, Inc. and Abercrombie & Fitch. In addition, Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants serves as the official hotel partner; and AT&T is the official VIP Reception Sponsor.

UCA2020 Convention: Something (Almost) Completely Different

“Our new approach to the annual convention will provide industry leaders with the resources to live in two places at once: now and next, improving current practices while innovating for the future,” said Laurel Stoimenoff, CEO of UCA.

On-demand medicine is a dynamic, ever-changing industry that raises the bar to meet evolving patient demands. To further advance industry innovation and learning, the Urgent Care Association (UCA) and College of Urgent Care Medicine (CUCM) redesigned their annual event to provide more meaningful connections and unique educational resources for members and partners. The UCA2020 Convention will deliver something (almost) completely different to participants, offering a thought-provoking experience and ground-breaking tools to propel the industry into the next decade. Registration is now open for UCA2020, which will take place May 3-6 at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas, Nev.

“On-demand medicine doesn’t stand still – whether you are treating patients, growing a team or building a business – you have to think ahead so you can stay ahead,” said Laurel Stoimenoff, CEO of UCA. “Our new approach to the annual convention will provide industry leaders with the resources to live in two places at once: now and next, improving current practices while innovating for the future.”

At UCA2020, attendees will explore new ways to optimize patient care and strategies to take practice management to the next level. Experts will introduce the latest tools and best practices for staying nimble and adaptive through engaging discussions and hands-on activities.

“To be successful, our leaders must be creative, open-minded, innovative, connected and brave in their decisions,” said Richard Park, MD, UCA board president, vice chairman for the board of directors at CityMD. “At UCA2020, we will encourage leaders to think outside-the-box and challenge the status quo as they push the industry forward.”

UCA developed an educational agenda to introduce new topics, experts and activities, while ensuring more time throughout the event for valuable networking. In addition, the exhibit hall will provide opportunities for participants to learn about and from various industry resources.

Sessions at the event will cover a wide array of topics including the end-to-end patient experience, artificial intelligence, creating patient loyalty, engaging providers and clinical updates nuanced to the on-demand environment. Participants also will have the chance to ask accreditation questions in a hands-on workshop, and brainstorm new ideas at an industry ‘hack-a-thon’.

Several keynote speakers will share insights on the latest industry trends:

  • Disrupting Your Status Quo with Kai Kight
  • Reframing Healthcare with Zeev Neuwirth, MD, and Marcus Osborne
  • Deploying Emerging Technologies Strategically with Nathan Bays, Richard Roth and Peter Fleischut, MD

“Our rapidly evolving industry deserves an evolved approach at meeting, learning and networking,” said Stoimenoff. “We spoke with our members and partners to understand what kind of experience they want and then broke down and rebuilt our Convention with forward-focused content and more exciting ways to connect with and learn from one another.”

Leading Heart Surgeon Condemns Vaping Flavor Bans

Vaping statistics

New study on vaping shows that banning flavors could be detrimental to the goal of harm reduction

The argument that [vaping] appeals to youth and is directed solely at them is false

180Smoke Vape Shop has interviewed Dr. Gopal Bhatnagar, a leading Canadian cardiac surgeon and head of cardiovascular surgery unit at the Trillium Health Centre on the recent vaping health crisis and his opinion on the political response across North America. He provides expert insight from a medical perspective on how vaping is used by smokers and clinicians as a cessation tool.

Dr. Bhatnagar stresses that the condemnation of vaping is a regressive step for society and calls out the media for not clearly identifying the difference between vaping eliquid and THC, which has influenced policy and regulations.

According to the latest CDC research, vitamin E acetate is a “chemical of concern” and was found in all of the patients who suffered from vaping related lung injuries. Vitamin E acetate might be used “as a thickening agent” in THC products.

A flavor ban would alienate 87% of vapers who do not prefer to vape tobacco or flavorless eliquids according to a recent study by 180Smoke. This user demographics study and associated infographic, revealed that the proposed Trump flavor ban would limit vapers to flavors that are preferred by only 13% of users. Experts believe that this could discourage others from considering vaping as an alternative nicotine delivery system.

The study also shows that younger people do not vape in larger numbers, and that the majority of those surveyed used to smoke and now only vape.

Founded by Boris Giller and Ashutosh Jha, 180Smoke is a vape shop and online store that offers e-cigarettes, vaporizers, and vape liquids. According to leading Canadian heart surgeon, Dr Gopal Bhatnagar, the vaping flavor ban proposed by Trump is incredibly dangerous.

The Pathfinder Network Launches Enhanced Visiting Pilot Program for Incarcerated Parents in Oregon

News Image

“In Oregon alone there are 70,000 children who have had a parent in prison or jail—it is important for these kids to know they are loved and that their parents want to spend time with them,” said TPN director of corrections programs Sheri Sandoval.

After a year of development, this month The Pathfinder Network (TPN) began piloting its new parenting program, Parenting Inside Out (PIO) Phase II: Enhanced Visiting. An advanced skills development and parent-child visiting program for incarcerated parents, PIO Phase II builds upon the evidence-based Parenting Inside Out® (PIO) curriculum and provides special focus on strengthening positive parenting practices through individual and group coaching on communication, connection and planning for life as a parent after release. With a strengths-based and holistic approach, the program supports incarcerated parents as well provides materials and resources for children and caregivers, all with the goal of enhancing the parent-child relationship, increasing positive family engagement and mitigating the impact of parental incarceration on children.

PIO Phase II is a pilot project made possible by a federal Second Chance Act grant from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention and a partnership with the Oregon Department of Corrections (DOC). Over the next two years, the pilot is projected to serve more than 140 incarcerated parents at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility and Santiam Correctional Institution, along with their children and caregivers of their children.

“We are committed to working together with the parents, caregivers, children and staff, as well as with our partners at DOC and the Department of Human Services, in order to provide opportunities for children to have healthy, structured and positive interactions with their parents,” shared Milo Dittrich, TPN corrections program manager over seeing PIO Phase II. “When people are dealing with difficult things, we can meet them where they are to provide tangible support and walk alongside with them.”

Once parents have completed PIO, they are eligible to apply for the PIO Phase II program, which provides advanced skill development of core PIO topics and includes lessons on communication with children, child centered parenting and nurturing children’s individuality. Over the course of three months, parents participate in 30 hours of advanced skills development and practice workshops with trained TPN coaches, one-on-one coaching, monthly enhanced coached visits with their children, post-visit debrief sessions, and peer support groups. Additionally, coaches partner with parents to develop individualized parenting re-entry plans that include identifying relevant community-based services for ongoing support after they release. All parents and families who participate in the program are also invited to an annual family engagement event. The first two cohorts of the program consist of 12 mothers and fathers, and around 20 children ranging in age from infant to 17 and living across the state of Oregon and parts of Washington.

Unlike many existing programs currently available for incarcerated parents, a key component of PIO Phase II provides ongoing support and resources for children and caregivers, addressing the barriers that often prevent positive visiting experiences and building protective factors that reduce the social and emotional impact of having an incarcerated parent. Before visits, TPN coaches offer outreach to the families to develop a relationship and prepare children and caregivers for what to expect from the program. Coaches also provide developmentally specific support materials to children that mirror what the incarcerated parents are learning along with referrals to community resources when needed.

A portion of the grant award will fund transportation and lodging costs for caregivers and children traveling from far away, and efforts to increase contact through video calls and technology are underway. Additionally, PIO Phase II includes a trauma informed emotional intelligence training for visiting security staff in order to promote the creation of safer institutions and visiting spaces that allow for empowerment, growth and healing for the families.

“In Oregon alone there are 70,000 children who have had a parent in prison or jail—it is important for these kids to know they are loved and that their parents want to spend time with them,” said TPN director of corrections programs Sheri Sandoval, citing a 2016 policy report by The Annie E. Casey Foundation. “PIO Phase II provides the opportunity to not only increase contact between children and their incarcerated parents, but to really support families throughout the process.”

Relaymed selected November 2019 App of the Month by Allscripts

Allscripts Featured Application

The need for easy to use technologies that help improve quality is clear. That’s why Allscripts is proud to recognize Relaymed for the contribution they make to this challenge.

Relaymed has been chosen as the Allscripts App of the Month for the third time. Their integrated solution makes a significant impact on clinician workflow by enabling healthcare providers to focus on what matters most: providing amazing patient care.

Every year, billions of point-of-care test results (urinalyses, blood tests, etc.) are still entered manually from paper printouts into the electronic health record (EHR). This time-consuming process presents opportunities for human error and lost results. Relaymed automates this process, eliminating manual effort and mistakes.

In a world where so many of our day to day tasks can now be streamlined with technology, why continue to enter these results manually when solutions are available to automate the process? That’s why Allscripts chose Relaymed as their November App of the Month.

“We’re honored to be a 3-time Allscripts App of the Month partner. This gives us the opportunity to showcase Relaymed to more physician practices that use Allscripts on how we can help them work smarter, not harder, to spend more facetime with patients. Together with Allscripts, we’re working to improve quality of care while also reducing clinical staff burden,” said Neil Farish, CEO at Relaymed.

Being chosen as Allscripts App of the Month recognizes the real difference that Relaymed can make in a busy physician practice and why it’s a solution that they are promoting to their clients.

“The need for easy to use technologies that help improve quality is clear. That’s why Allscripts is proud to recognize Relaymed for the contribution they make to this challenge, as timely, accurate lab results that clinicians can immediately use during a patient encounter are an important part of the overall patient experience,” said Tina Joros, Vice President & General Manager, Open & Allscripts Practice Financial Platform.

Allscripts is a leader in EHR interoperability and healthcare information technology solutions that advance clinical, financial and operational results across an Open platform. Featuring the industry’s most innovative Healthcare IT developers, the award-winning Allscripts Developer Program (ADP) speeds time from innovation to implementation to help increase productivity, deliver higher-quality, more personalized care, seamlessly integrate devices, manage population health and much more.

Just as the Allscripts Developer Program offers first class open APIs, so does Relaymed, which has some of the leading medical device vendors (including Abbott, Siemens, Roche) on its lab interface platform. These interconnecting ecosystems are where the power of open, quality and value all intersect.

Allscripts clients can learn more about Relaymed on the Allscripts Application Store and register for the Allscripts App of the Month webinar on November 21.

About Relaymed

Relaymed is the middleware solution the ambulatory market was missing, linking the disparate worlds of point-of-care testing and electronic health record systems. Relaymed eliminates manual tasks that slow down staff and providers so they can concentrate on what matters — patient care. Now millions of patient test results are transmitted securely and efficiently across a growing network of healthcare delivery organizations leveraging a single connectivity platform compatible with the leading vendors. Learn how you can take advantage of the efficiency gains of Relaymed.

Consider Supporting Hospitalized Veterans on Giving Tuesday

“The holidays can be a very lonely and challenging time of the year for many people, but this is even more evident for veterans who are hospitalized and far from their loved ones,” says Dr. Adam M. Robinson, Jr., director of the VA Maryland Health Care System.

With Giving Tuesday on Dec. 3, 2019, the Veterans Affairs (VA) Maryland Health Care System reminds community members, businesses and organizations about the benefits of supporting local hospitalized veterans throughout Maryland. Created in 2012, Giving Tuesday is a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate and celebrate generosity before the holidays, and enables participants to turn good intentions into action.

Each year, hundreds of Veterans spend the holidays at a VA Maryland Health Care System inpatient facility. Many of these hospitalized veterans may not have an opportunity to see family members and friends during the holiday season. On Giving Tuesday and throughout the year, community members, corporate donors and other organizations can support veteran inpatients by making a donation to the VA Maryland Health Care System’s Holiday Gift Program, which provides gift packages valued at $70 for each hospitalized veteran at the Baltimore, Loch Raven and Perry Point VA Medical Centers during the holiday season.

“The holidays can be a very lonely and challenging time of the year for many people, but this is even more evident for veterans who are hospitalized and far from their loved ones,” says Dr. Adam M. Robinson, Jr., director of the VA Maryland Health Care System. “GivingTuesday is a wonderful opportunity to support the needs of our hospitalized veterans this holiday season and to remind them that their service in the armed forces has not been forgotten.”

To make a donation, visit http://www.maryland.va.gov and click on “Volunteer or Donate” on the left side of the landing page, or call 410-642-2411, ext. 25409.
