Diablo Magazine Announces The 2019 Threads of Hope Recipients

Diablo magazine December 2019 Threads of Hope issue

Diablo magazine December 2019 Threads of Hope issue

The mission has always been to help the sick and the poor. It’s no different today.

Diablo magazine’s December issue highlights five local heroes who are changing their communities for the better through their volunteer work. This year’s Threads of Hope honorees include a doctor who treats patients for free, a photographer who captures families’ precious moments, a nonprofit founder helping Tri-Valley teens, a proponent of foster care youth, and a woman dedicated to making seniors’ dreams come true.

Karen Henrich of Moment By Moment has spent 14 years providing photography to thousands of Bay Area families. She takes portraits of terminally ill children or those with a life-impacting condition and their families to capture the love, hope, and courage they express during the most difficult of times. The photo session can be extremely therapeutic and the photographs have incredible ongoing meaning.

Tom Wallace of Order of Malta Clinic of Northern California was a neurologist for half his life. Now, at age 89, he continues to treat thousands of patients at a clinic where he has volunteered four days a week since 2014. He states, “The mission (of the Order of Malta) has always been to help the sick and the poor. It’s no different today.”

Edie Henchey of Youth Homes Auxiliary has always loved retail and recognized the fundraising strength that thrift shop sales could afford a nonprofit helping foster children. Since 2014, the thrift store she manages has raised $100,000 each year; 100 percent of the sales directly benefit the children, making available birthday gifts and backpacks with school supplies and even some excursions.

Sharon Beswick Pappas of An Elderly Wish Foundation is a retired register nurse of 42 years having specialized in gerontology. Her sincere desire continues to be to help the elderly. Pappas has been volunteering with the organization for almost 20 years and they have granted some 200 wishes to date.

Linda Turnbull, founder of Teen Esteem in 1994, leads a team of 15 trained speakers who address issues relevant to students. The goal is to give kids confidence to make better choices for themselves.

Diablo magazine readers submitted nominations for this year’s honorees, and dozens more for other outstanding volunteers. A panel of community leaders select the Threads of Hope honorees. This year’s judges were Jeri Boomgaarden, managing director of donor services and senior development officer, East Bay Community Foundation; Mark Flower, senior vice president and regional managing director, Wells Fargo Private Bank; Gaby Ghorbani, founder and director, Pledge to Humanity; Carole Wynstra, board member, Walnut Creek Library Foundation.

THREADS OF HOPE EVENT

On December 4, all five 2019 Threads of hope honorees will be recognized and celebrated at the Threads of Hope event to be help at the Lesher Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek. Jessica Aguirre of NBC11 News will be the mistress of ceremonies and the event will be sponsored by Wells Fargo Private Bank and Contra Costa Oncology.

Women’s Fertility Product Scores Top Marks from TopConsumerReviews.com

News Image

Because of their successful all-natural approach to Women’s Fertility, we’re pleased to give Fertile XX our highest recommendation in 2019

TopConsumerReviews.com recently awarded their highest five-star rating to Fertile XX, a nutritional supplement produced by Native Remedies aimed at supporting Women’s Fertility and healthy natural ovulation.

Millions of couples long to have a baby. Unfortunately, Mother Nature makes conception harder for some women than for others. Factors like weight, medical conditions, age, and even stress can affect all aspects of the process, from ovulation to implantation. Modern medical technology has made it possible for many of these obstacles to be overcome, but often at a steep cost with a high possibility of side effects or complications. For that reason, many women turn to natural fertility products: easily purchased online as over-the-counter supplements, much more affordable than IVF or other invasive procedures, and with much less risk of unwanted side effects. However, these Women’s Fertility products vary widely in the issues they address, in their methods of use, and so on – so prospective customers should consider each product carefully to find the one that is the best match for their fertility challenges.

“If you’re looking for the best all-around booster for Women’s Fertility, you should definitely consider trying Fertile XX,” stated Brian Dolezal, of TopConsumerReviews.com, LLC. “Offered by Native Remedies, a frequent first-place winner for supplements that deal with a broad range of conditions, Fertile XX uses a powerful blend of herbal ingredients, including Chaste Tree Berry and Eleuthero Root. Customers report that using this product helped them to have more regular ovulation and menstrual cycles, better mood and libido, and better balance in their hormone levels. We were excited to read so many reviews from women who happily reported that they were able to get pregnant after using Fertile XX for a short time. And, because Native Remedies offers an exceptional one-year return policy on all of their natural products, there’s literally no reason not to give this product a try. Because of their successful all-natural approach to Women’s Fertility, we’re pleased to give Fertile XX our highest recommendation in 2019.”

TrialScope Launches Clinical Trials Website for EMD Serono

EMD Serono Clinical Trials website

EMD Serono Clinical Trials website

“Both EMD Serono and TrialScope share a commitment to clinical trial transparency, awareness and patient engagement.” – TrialScope CEO Jeff Kozloff

TrialScope, the global leader in clinical trial transparency and disclosure compliance solutions, has worked with EMD Serono, the North American branch of the healthcare business of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, to launch a new website, https://clinicaltrials.emdgroup.com. This site is designed to educate and inform patients, caregivers, the public, patient advocacy groups and healthcare professionals (HCPs) about the clinical trial journey, as well as provide specific information about clinical trials conducted by Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, and its affiliates.

In an effort to keep clinical trial participants fully informed, the website provides an overview of the different phases of research, as well as outlines each step the patient will encounter through the clinical trial process. The site also provides access to trial results and other available post-trial information, such as plain language summaries and clinical study report synopses. This is made possible through the TrialScope Engage™ platform that automatically syncs approved clinical trial data from TrialScope Disclose™, the global disclosure system used by Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany. The site also provides impactful information about clinical research to healthcare professionals, which helps them raise awareness about the importance of clinical trials and discuss potential participation in clinical trials with their patients. An extensive FAQ section, with more than 30 questions and answers, provides a comprehensive overview of clinical trials.

“Both EMD Serono and TrialScope share a commitment to clinical trial transparency, awareness and patient engagement,” said TrialScope CEO Jeff Kozloff. “Together, we sought input from multiple patient stakeholders to develop an informative and well-designed site that will help accelerate patient knowledge, understanding and connections to relevant clinical trial information.”

To ensure that the website content meets the needs of patients, TrialScope and EMD Serono worked with the Center for Information and Study on Clinical Research Participation (CISCRP) to gather feedback from patients and the public. According to CISCRP, 75 percent of the general public is willing to participate in a clinical trial, yet only 30 percent have a basic understanding of what clinical research is. Insights gleaned from people who had previously searched for trials guided not only the content but the manner in which it is presented.

TrialScope provides proven solutions that optimize the efficiency of disclosure activities, maximize trial data transparency, and foster more informed, engaged patients through open research sharing. Translational Study Demonstrates Value of MSOT Imaging for the Assessment of Disease Progression in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

In this study we were able to visualize collagen in vivo using MSOT imaging. It suggests its application as a non-invasive, age-independent biomarker for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

DMD is the most common lethal inherited muscular disease occurring in about one of 5,000 male births. While affected boys can develop normally, at the age of 4 to 5 years a loss of muscle mass becomes apparent. By the age of 10, characteristic muscle weakness results in the loss of walking ability and finally in respiratory and cardiac failure. Until now, the assessment of disease progression is based on muscle examinations as well as functional testing. However, physical examinations rely on active cooperation and the individual performance on the day and require a minimum age, which limits their clinical utility.

Imaging approaches such as ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have been investigated as non-invasive and objective disease assessment methods. However, complex scanning protocols limit their application and the need for sedation of very young patients still raises the need for independent easy-to-apply prognostic biomarkers in DMD.

The studies conducted at the University Hospital Erlangen (UHE) included tissues, experimental models, as well as 10 boys and 10 healty volunteers, aged 3 to 10 years. Results demonstrate that MSOT can visualize and quantify the distribution and concentration of collagen as a measure for degenerated muscular tissue, demonstrating a biomarker for DMD disease progression. ‘In this study we were able to visualize collagen in vivo using MSOT imaging’, says Dr. Adrian Regensburger, MD at UHE. ‘It suggests its application as a non-invasive, age-independent biomarker for DMD, thereby potentially filling the urgent clinical need for an easy and objective assessment of DMD disease progression and treatment monitoring’.

Christian Wiest, CEO at iThera Medical comments: ‘We are excited to see that MSOT can potentially aid DMD patients suffering from this severe disease. We will therefore continue to drive research for the use of our imaging technology in DMD and to expand its use into related fields.’

Technology platforms unite to offer a full-stack tech suite for health and fitness innovators

News Image

“We jumped at the opportunity to bring together a collective that, when combined, would allow any company to create a digital product designed to engage and retain their users, whether they’re in the studio or at home.” – asensei CEO Steven Webster

Today asensei, Feed.fm, Mux and WEEL announce the launch of a full suite of technology designed to offer a complete solution for digital fitness experience creators.

As more and more Connected Fitness products hit the market, the opportunity exists for a technology stack upon which companies can differentiate their products and decrease time to market. This partnership was forged to address that gap and combine key technical elements in one holistic package. With a simple plug-and-play solution that includes video streaming, music licensing and streaming, and body sensor technology, any company can harness the competitive edge they need.

The partnership includes:

asensei: asensei offers a Connected Coaching™ platform that understands human movement and movement coaching through patented (app)arel technology, which integrates motion capture and real-time coaching into sport clothing. This allows asensei to provide customers real-time feedback from world-class trainers and athletes on their form and technique as they practice their favorite sports or fitness activities on their preferred equipment. For apparel and equipment brands, Connected Coaching from asensei turns education into engagement, and ensures customers aren’t simply moving, but improving.

Feed.fm: Music is core the workout experience and is proven to drive improved outcomes for exercisers. Feed.fm’s platform makes it easy for brands to seamlessly harness the power of music to engage and empower their users. The company tackles three major challenges when it comes to integrating popular music in apps, on websites, or in physical spaces: music licensing and curation, white label technology integration, and real-time analytics.

Mux: Mux is an API-first video platform designed to make world-class video streaming and analytics possible for any development team. For a connected fitness product, it’s imperative to deliver a seamless video streaming experience for the viewer at home or on the go. Mux delivers this with its advanced encoding services and ability to distribute video across different bandwidths, form factors, and devices.

Weel:The world’s leader in the research, development and manufacturing of wearable electronics, WEEL’s electronics are core to the asensei Connected Coaching experience. Their tech makes it easy for apparel manufacturers to integrate motion capture sensors into their apparel, compatible with the asensei Kinetic Capture(TM) technology that enables real-time coaching and feedback. By partnering with WEEL, asensei is able to shorten the time to market for existing apparel brands to create smart apparel.

“At asensei, building products on our Connected Coaching platform has given us first-hand experience of all the technical challenges at play when developing a connected fitness experience that is absent the watchful eye of a trainer or coach,“ said asensei CEO, Steven Webster. “We jumped at the opportunity to bring together a collective that, when combined, would allow any company to create a digital product that doesn’t just meet the bar of existing Connected Fitness products, but raises the bar to include real-time coaching of correct form and technique.”

“Music is a key part of any workout – there’s a scientifically proven link between the right music and improved physical performance, but more importantly for health and fitness platforms there’s a direct improvement in retention and frequency of use when workouts have the right soundtrack,” said Lauren Pufpaf, COO of Feed.fm. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with this group on combining all of the key elements that can help any health or fitness brand get the right technology and expertise to bring their platform into the homes of users even more quickly.”

“Offering crystal clear video, regardless of the device, brings an experience to life and can help any user feel that they’re right in the classroom with their favorite trainer or instructor, even if it’s the middle of the night,” said Eric Elia, Head of Strategic Accounts at Mux. “We’re passionate about helping platforms of all kinds find their audience through streaming video, and we’re so excited to be working with this group to help bring the visions of so many health and fitness brands to life, no matter where their user lives.”

“One of the challenges for wearable technology is that it requires a multitude of sensors that disappear into familiar and fashionable apparel and to do so at scale. The value-add of WEEL to the partnership is that we can have an apparel partner come to us to enable them to create “smart” apparel at scale that looks and feels like their own brand.” added Michael Corbett, GM of WEEL Technologies. “We are excited to work with this group to deliver an all-in-one tech solution for health and fitness platforms that delivers the best possible experience for their user, every day.”

The companies are available for briefings at the Digital Fitness and Active Brands Summit in Los Angeles, December 4-5 and CES in Las Vegas, January 7-9.

About asensei

Our Kinetic Capture™ technology gives asensei sport-specific understanding of posture and movement by embedding motion capture capability into regular sports apparel. The asensei experience is enabled through (app)arel, compression apparel infused with Kinetic Capture, allowing asensei to guide, monitor and correct your practice with real-time feedback. asensei is changing the way aspiring athletes practice sport and fitness, by letting them progress along their own path as they follow coaching programs from sporting heroes.

For apparel and equipment brands, asensei offers a digital strategy that turns transactions into subscriptions, content marketing into coaching, and makes the equipment purchase the beginning not the end of the consumer journey.

“Accreditation for local health departments is essential. It is the public’s assurance that their health department is meeting national standards.” — Colleen M. Bridger, Assistant City Manager for the City of San Antonio, Texas

Strong public health departments engaged in effective community partnerships make all communities healthier places to live, work, learn, and play. Striving to fulfill their crucial mission, more and more health departments are placing their work for review against the rigorous national standards set by the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). Today, PHAB announced it has awarded initial five-year accreditation status to nine local health departments and national reaccreditation status to four local health departments. With these decisions, the benefits of being served by a PHAB-accredited health department now reach 81 percent of the U.S. population.

PHAB, the nonprofit, nongovernmental organization that administers the national public health accreditation program, aims to improve and protect the health of the public by advancing and transforming the quality and performance of governmental public health agencies in the U.S. and abroad. To receive national accreditation through PHAB, a health department must undergo a rigorous, multi-faceted, peer-reviewed assessment process to ensure it meets a set of public health quality standards and measures.

“The nine health departments that achieved initial accreditation this week have successfully demonstrated a consistent and continued commitment to improving public health in their communities,” said PHAB President and CEO Kaye Bender, PhD, RN, FAAN. “We celebrate that achievement with them, and we also celebrate with the four health departments that were awarded reaccreditation this week. In achieving reaccreditation, these four health departments are ensuring their communities that they will continue to evolve, improve, advance and become increasingly effective at improving the health of the populations they serve.”

PHAB’s national accreditation program provides standards for state, Tribal, local, and territorial health departments, as well as Army installation departments of public health. Nearly every state in the nation has at least one PHAB-accredited health department within its borders.

“Accreditation for local health departments is essential,” said Colleen M. Bridger, MPH, PhD, assistant city manager for the City of San Antonio, Texas, and former director of the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District, which this week achieved national initial accreditation through PHAB. “It is the public’s assurance that their health department is meeting national standards. I’m proud of the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District’s staff and leadership for the way they rolled up their sleeves and jumped into this work. I’ve known for years that San Antonio’s health department is stellar, and this is one more validation of the first-in-class team working every day to protect the public’s health.”

The benefits of being served by a nationally accredited health department also moved northward into Michigan this week, where the residents of Lansing celebrated the accreditation of Ingham County Health Department. Michigan is now home to eight PHAB-accredited local health departments.

“PHAB accreditation is a reflection of a community-wide commitment to 21st century public health,” said Ingham County Health Department Deputy Health Officer Joel D. Murr, MPA. “It’s an achievement and advantage for all of Ingham County. The high standards will drive continuous progress, advancing health and well-being across all segments of our population. The Ingham County Health Department is proud to be a nationally accredited local health department.”

PHAB’s national accreditation program, which launched in 2011 with support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, has become the national standard for public health in the United States. The credential has now been achieved by 36 state health departments, 243 local health departments, three Tribal health departments, one statewide integrated local public health department system, and one Army Installation of Public Health. Among the local health departments to achieve national reaccreditation this week is Columbus Public Health in Columbus, Ohio.

“Columbus Public Health is proud to be nationally recognized by the Public Health Accreditation Board,” said Health Commissioner Mysheika W. Roberts, MD, MPH. “Reaccreditation recognizes the hard work we do every day in our community to protect the health and improve the lives of residents. We are honored to join other nationally accredited health departments to advance and transform the quality and performance of public health here and across the country.”
