A Breakthrough in Artificial Intelligence Technology in Trial for Detecting Polyps

Polyp Detection in Real-time

“The service is extremely fast and can identify polyps in real-time and is like a second pair of eyes” Dr. Scholl

Raleigh Endoscopy Center has teamed up with Avesha to trial the world’s first real-time polyp detection service at their location in Cary, NC. Avesha has deployed the first “edge”-cloud based AI inferencing system. This is a real breakthrough in low latency real-time AI-feedback.

The clinical trial is using Artificial Intelligence (AI) specifically designed for the colon to assist the doctor in identifying polyps in real-time. Avesha has built a concurrent multi-model inferencing platform that has been trained with over 100,000 images to help detect various types of polyps and colon features. Dr. Shannon Scholl has been using the service for the past few months in over 200 procedures. “The service is extremely fast and can identify polyps in real-time and is like a second pair of eyes”. The Avesha Platform is very fast and scalable because AI-based Deep Learning is done at an edge-cloud with amazingly fast processing power utilizing multiple GPUs deployed at a local data center in Durham. The latency for a detection is less than 30ms.

In the US alone there are over 20 million colonoscopies done per year and there is a need to improve efficiencies and accuracy. Looking into the future, AI-assisted colonoscopy is a promising way to achieve these goals using these powerful new tools. Robert Beebe who spent 25 years Duke University GI Endoscopy Unit as an Operations Manager and Technical Assistant and now the VP Operations at Avesha states: “I have participated in tens of thousands of procedures during my career and have seen all the latest technology and advancements but AI from an image detection and workflow tool will help improve efficiency”.

The American Cancer Society recommends screening for colorectal cancer starting at age 45 years and continuing until age 75 years. Regular colorectal cancer screening is important for preventing new colorectal cancers from developing as well as for identifying existing colorectal cancers early – which can improve survival.

AMSURG, an Envision Healthcare Solution and partner with Raleigh Endoscopy Center, performs nearly 1 million colonoscopies a year and is committed to helping patients develop appropriate care plans to prevent and treat colorectal cancer. “We are excited to be involved in bringing cutting edge technologies like AI in our standard of care to our patients” according to Eric Albrecht, Divisional VP of AMSURG. Raleigh Endoscopy Center offers outpatient endoscopic facilities specializing in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases and disorders. Our team of 23 gastroenterologists serves the greater Triangle area with three convenient locations in Raleigh, North Raleigh and Cary. Patients are frequently seen for colorectal cancer screening and problems involving the digestive tract. From the waiting room to the recovery room, we want patients and their families to feel at ease during each visit. Avesha is the next big idea by serial tech entrepreneurs who have a history of inventing game changing technology. They founded Arrowpoint Networks in the late 90’s for creating a scalable network load balancing technology and sold the company for $6 Billion to Cisco. Then, in 2007 they founded Azuki Systems developing secure video encryption and delivery to mobile devices. They launched streaming services such as HBO Go and Showtime Anytime among others and sold the company to Ericsson. Avesha is the convergence of several newly emerging technologies including edge networking, live streaming and AI to deliver a service for real-time AI video inferencing and workflow automation. 2020 Slow Wine US Tour celebrates the 10th Anniversary of its Annual English Language Guide and a Decade of Success

This February, Slow Food International and Slow Wine Editore will release the latest English-language edition of the Slow Wine Guide, the renowned annual guide to over 500 different wineries worldwide, celebrating its 10th anniversary during the 2020 Slow Wine Tour.

The guide, born in 2010, marked a revolutionary moment in the history of Italian wine writing, when editors-in chief Giancarlo Gariglio and Fabio Giavedoni decided to abandon the score-based mentality to look beyond the technical and tasting notes of each label and dig deeper into the wines’ soul. The “Slow philosophy” takes into consideration the wineries sustainable farming practices and the unique story that link them with the territory and its people. Like Slow Food, from which it developed, the wines must be “good, clean and fair”. This intuition proved to be right making Slow Wine one the most comprehensive and acclaimed Italian wine guides in the world, thus naturally expanding its vision outside Italy, with the inclusion of Slovenian wineries in 2017, California ones in 2018 and Oregon in 2019.

“We are very proud of the path we started 10 years ago”, said Gariglio, “having contributed to raise the awareness of environmental and social consciousness, some of the most debated and urgent topics nowadays. Not only are consumers more careful and interested in discovering this ethical way of working, but the world of wine itself is changing with more and more producers joining the slow movement.”

The next step will be the inclusion of wineries from the East Coast, such as New York, Virginia, Maryland, and more in 2021.

A selection of producers from California and Oregon will participate in the annual US Tour together with a delegation of top Italian Slow Wine wineries, making stops in five cities nationwide, San Francisco, Seattle, Denver, New York and Boston. Attendees will get a chance to preview its innovative guide, discover new wines and meet the people behind the Italian and American select producers who represent the Slow Wine values. The Italian Trade Commission will continue its support to the Slow Wine US Tour, this year in Seattle, as a wonderful way to showcase the best of what the Made in Italy has to offer.

The dates and locations of the 2020 Slow Wine US Tour are:

February 18th, San Francisco, California: Pier 27, The Embarcadero

February 19th, Seattle, Washington: Bert & Tot Ballroom, Block 41

February 21st, Denver, Colorado: Asterisk, Downtown

February 24th, New York, New York: Union Park, Flatiron

February 25th, Boston, Massachusetts: Artist for Humanity, Fort Point

About Slow Wine

The Slow Wine Guide, published by Slow Food Editore (the publishing arm of Slow Food Italy*), adopts a new approach to wine criticism and looks at a variety of factors to evaluate wineries in their entirety. They take into consideration wine quality, history and adherence to terroir, value, environmental sensitivity and ecologically sustainable methods of practice. Slow Wine was conceived to give a realistic snapshot of the current Italian wine landscape. The guide features reviews of over 500 different wineries, each one visited by Slow Food experts. It is available for purchase on Amazon.com as well as in select bookstores.

*Slow Food International is a global grassroots organization that envisions a world in which all people can access and enjoy food that is good for them, good for those who grow it, and good for the planet. A non-profit member-supported association, Slow Food was founded in Italy in 1989 to counter the rise of fast food and fast life and the disappearance of local food traditions, and to encourage people to be aware about the food they eat, where it comes from, how it tastes, and how our food choices affect the rest of the world.

Hawaii Health Systems Corporation Oahu Region Taking a Leadership Role in Changing the Way Food is Perceived and Prepared by State Institutions

Fresh fruit grown in Hawaii

Hawaii Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Oahu Region announces a new dietary initiative to advance the farm-to-state program championed by State Senate President Ronald Kouchi. As part of the broad effort, the initiative will support the growth of Hawaii’s economy by creating markets for local farmers. In addition to local food sourcing, the initiative will expand service to meet the food needs of Oahu’s people, provide advanced skills training for HHSC Oahu Region dietary staff, and refine menus to improve the quality of life for residents of Leahi and Maluhia.

HHSC Oahu Region serves the daily food needs of more than 250 people. The facilities operate at maximum in -house capacity for residents and adult day health participants. Additionally, Leahi and Maluhia provide home delivery meals through the Meals on Wheels program. To increase service and food quality, the program will focus on opportunities to reduce costs through waste reduction strategies and streamlined kitchen operational processes.

“Our focused attention is set on being the premier community resource for nutritious, quality meals serving vulnerable populations” says Derek Akiyoshi, CEO. “The right foods can transform one’s outlook and approach to life. With locally grown, culturally relevant meals we can bring joy and vigor to the people we serve. The happier our customers are, the better their health and subsequent good mood.” Akiyoshi adds.

This program centers on taking care of Hawaii’s people and environment. Being so geographically isolated, the food supply in Hawaii is heavily reliant on imported goods and estimates are that between 85-90% of food products in Hawaii come from the U.S. mainland. The food supply in Hawaii is therefore significantly vulnerable to any disruption in regular shipments as well as reliant on canned, processed, and packaged goods. While challenging, some of these issues can be addressed by supporting local farmers and food producers.

Beyond Green Sustainable Food Partners, a Chicago-based consulting firm, will support HHSC Oahu Region by offering guidance and assistance addressing program needs. Eric Grebe, communications coordinator for the project explains, “Through intentional listening to what the residents, participants, caregivers, cooks, staff, and community want, we will facilitate making the goals a reality. People enjoy and come together over meals. There is perhaps no greater unifying force than delicious cooking.”

About Beyond Green Sustainable Food Partners

Beyond Green Sustainable Food Partners is a consulting and foodservice company that promotes scratch-cooked foods, local sourcing, and zero-waste. Founded by chef and “eco-preneur” Greg Christian, their consulting services offer customizable and measurable strategies that offset the costs of increasing quality and environmental stewardship across food, waste, energy, water, and community for institutional kitchens. Their team is devoted to client success and is pleased to provide tools that help others contribute to a healthier, cleaner, and more efficient food system while connecting with the communities they serve. In the greater Chicago area, they operate a zero-waste foodservice company that provides local school lunches based upon fresh, scratch cooked foods that kids love. Heartbeat Named Best Place to Work for Third Consecutive Year, Selected for 2019 MM&M Magazine List

We’re proud of the culture we’ve grown at Heartbeat, and we’re grateful to MM&M for recognizing it. But we’re far more proud of the people who make our culture what it is, and who’ve realized their potential because of it.

Leading healthcare marketing agency Heartbeat has been named to the 2019 MM&M Magazine Best Places to Work list. The prestigious MM&M listing honors agencies whose exceptional cultures and communities stand as models for the entire healthcare sector. It is Heartbeat’s second consecutive year on the MM&M list and the third consecutive year overall with a workplace award—the agency was honored in 2017 with inclusion in Ad Age’s Best Places to Work list and again in MM&M’s inaugural Best Places to Work 2018 list.

Eligibility for the MM&M program was open to all U.S. agencies, vendors, and consultancies focused on the healthcare space. The competition included an initial eligibility questionnaire, followed by a survey to be completed by a portion of the company’s staff. A panel of external judges and experts in healthcare marketing talent recruitment were convened to work with MM&M staff on selecting the final winners. A total of twelve companies were selected—four winners in each of three size-based categories: small, medium, & large agency.

Heartbeat was once again a selection in the mid-size agency category and was the subject of a feature story in the MM&M December Issue (https://www.mmm-online.com/best-places-to-work/a-day-in-the-life-of-2019-best-places-to-work-winner-heartbeat/). Widely known for a passionate devotion to company culture, Heartbeat has maintained a steadfast commitment to cultivating a unique employee experience. Also dedicated to leading the charge for diversity and gender equality in advertising, the agency boasts some of the highest diversity, employee satisfaction, and retention rates in the industry—all factors that have weighed into the company’s now three straight Best Places to Work list inclusions.

According to MM&M officials, “Companies that made the cut for the Best Places to Work list scored high on fostering collaboration, inspiring creativity, having offices that are flexible and spacious, and providing access to the best technology.” MM&M Senior Editor Larry Dobrow also noted, “Given the intense degree of competition for A-list talent, agencies need to continue to invest in all aspects of their culture. The ones honored in our Best Places to Work program are the ones who have taken the extra step to bolster the professional and personal lives of their employees – and are enjoying the benefits in terms of recruitment and retention.”

“Good things happen when we invest in one another. Whether that investment is in mentorship programs, in consistent creative critique, or in the celebration of our diverse community… it shows that we believe in each person’s potential,” said James Talerico, Heartbeat President & Executive Creative Director, of the company’s newest Best Place to Work honor. “We’re proud of the culture we’ve grown at Heartbeat, and we’re grateful to MM&M for recognizing it. But we’re far more proud of the people who make our culture what it is, and who’ve realized their potential because of it.”

The full MM&M Best Places to Work 2019 list can be found on mmm-online (https://www.mmm-online.com/best-places-to-work/best-places-to-work-2019/).

The documentary features commentary and outlook from key opinion leaders representing regulatory, industry, consulting and technology providers who offer their thoughts and outlook on the current state of data collection and analysis, industry challenges, and the future outlook for this critical industry topic.

“Data collection has been a common practice for years in the pharmaceutical industry.
