John V. Prunskis, MD., FIPP panelist at the Sixth Annual Summit on Balanced Pain Management in Washington DC

John V. Prunskis, MD, FIPP

John V. Prunskis, MD., co-founder and co-Medical Director of the Illinois Pain Institute, Presidential Appointee U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Pain Management Best Practices Inter-Agency Task Force (Pain Task Force) was a panelist at the sixth annual 2019 Summit on Balance Pain Management in Washington DC.

Hosted by the Alliance for Balanced Pain Management, the Summit highlights the benefits of integrated pain care and the barriers patients face in accessing it, as well as ideas to begin removing those access challenges.

Hearing from a variety of perspectives, attendees will understand the role of balanced pain management in the effort to reduce opioid abuse and the challenges presented to patients, physicians, regulators and policymakers when considering how to implement a pain care strategy that may include pharmacological, nonpharmacological, and new medical device technologies as therapies. Panelists will also discuss what balanced pain management really means, and how it can be used to better treat patients with pain and improve patient safety.

John Prunskis, MD., and Illinois Pain Institute (‘PI) are national leaders in the precise diagnosis and treatment of pain with limited use of opioid medications. IPI supports targeted treatment of the source of pain rather than just masking the symptoms with narcotics. The approach is growing in popularity as awareness of the opioid epidemic increases.

The Illinois Pain Institute (IPI), is Chicagoland’s leading and longest-established, multi-site pain management practice with national reputation. IPI doctors specialize in the precise diagnosis and treatment of neck, back, herniated disks, sciatica, headache, pelvic, musculoskeletal, and many other painful conditions. NeoTract Designates Dr. Gregory McCoy as UroLift® Center of Excellence

News Image

“This designation recognizes Dr. Gregory McCoy as a UroLift Center of Excellence for his commitment to providing safe and effective treatment to patients with BPH,” said Dave Amerson

NeoTract, a wholly owned subsidiary of Teleflex Incorporated (NYSE:TFX) focused on addressing unmet needs in the field of urology, today announced that Gregory McCoy, MD, The Oregon Clinic in Portland, OR has been designated as a UroLift® Center of Excellence. The designation recognizes that Dr. Gregory McCoy has achieved a high level of training and experience with the UroLift® System and demonstrated a commitment to exemplary care for men suffering from symptoms associated with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), also known as enlarged prostate.

Recommended for the treatment of BPH in both the American Urological Association and European Association of Urology clinical guidelines, the FDA-cleared Prostatic Urethral Lift procedure using the UroLift System is a proven, minimally invasive technology for treating lower urinary tract symptoms due to BPH. The UroLift permanent implants, delivered during a transurethral outpatient procedure, relieve prostate obstruction and open the urethra directly without cutting, heating, or removing prostate tissue.

The UroLift Center of Excellence program is designed to highlight urologists who are committed to educating their patients on BPH and the UroLift System as a treatment option and consistently seek to deliver excellent patient outcomes and experiences.

“This designation recognizes Dr. Gregory McCoy as a UroLift Center of Excellence for his commitment to providing safe and effective treatment to patients with BPH,” said Dave Amerson, president of the Teleflex Interventional Urology business unit. “We are pleased to see the continued acceptance of the UroLift System as a standard of care treatment that may allow men to discontinue the use of BPH medications and improve their quality of life.”

Over 40 million men in the United States are affected by BPH, a condition that occurs when the prostate gland that surrounds the male urethra becomes enlarged with advancing age and begins to obstruct the urinary system. Symptoms of BPH often include interrupted sleep and urinary problems and can cause loss of productivity, depression and decreased quality of life.

Medication is often the first-line therapy for enlarged prostate, but relief can be inadequate and temporary. Side effects of medication treatment can include sexual dysfunction, dizziness and headaches, prompting many patients to quit using the drugs. For these patients, the classic alternative is surgery that cuts, heats or removes prostate tissue to open the blocked urethra. While current surgical options can be very effective in relieving symptoms, they can also leave patients with permanent side effects such as urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and retrograde ejaculation.

About the UroLift® System

The FDA-cleared UroLift System is a proven, minimally invasive technology for treating lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The UroLift permanent implants, delivered during a minimally invasive transurethral outpatient procedure, relieve prostate obstruction and open the urethra directly without cutting, heating, or removing prostate tissue. Clinical data from a pivotal 206-patient randomized controlled study showed that patients with enlarged prostate receiving UroLift implants reported rapid and durable symptomatic and urinary flow rate improvement without compromising sexual function*1,2. Patients also experienced a significant improvement in quality of life. Over 100,000 men have been treated with the UroLift System in the U.S. Most common adverse events reported include hematuria, dysuria, micturition urgency, pelvic pain, and urge incontinence. Most symptoms were mild to moderate in severity and resolved within two to four weeks after the procedure. The Prostatic Urethral Lift procedure using the UroLift System is recommended for the treatment of BPH in both the American Urological Association and European Association of Urology clinical guidelines. The UroLift System is available in the U.S., Europe, Australia, Canada, Mexico and South Korea. Learn more at http://www.UroLift.com.

Greenlight Guru Announces Enhanced Change Management Capabilities

News Image

We know change is inevitable with highly competitive medical device manufacturers changing rapidly in the pursuit of higher quality and, as medical devices become increasingly commoditized, in response to consumer demand for new features.

Greenlight Guru, quality management system purpose-built for medical device companies, today announced new updates to the platform’s – – Change Management capabilities. The enhanced Change Management capabilities include advanced workflow efficiencies in customers’ ability to identify, assess, and track the items impacted by change orders in a collaborative change workspace, while also ensuring connectivity and traceability to any records or sources that influenced design or process changes within the quality ecosystem. Additionally, customers can now track and trend the effectiveness of their change activities with analytics & KPI’s.

Issues associated with medical device changes, both process- and product-related, represent a significant source of noncompliance for medical device manufacturers. Changes require updated documentation, approvals and signatures across teams, and depending on the complexity of the device across multiple departments, as well as clearly stated justification and desired outcomes for each change.

“We know change is inevitable with highly competitive medical device manufacturers changing rapidly in the pursuit of higher quality and, as medical devices become increasingly commoditized, in response to consumer demand for new features,” said David DeRam, CEO of Greenlight Guru. “Modern medical devices require modern solutions to everyday workflows.”

Whether it be design changes that require updates to design controls and risk matrices, or document changes that impact multiple procedures, work instructions, or forms, Greenlight Guru’s Change Management functionality ensures medical device companies a simple way to manage change and be audit-ready.

“Paper and digital-paper based systems, such as spreadsheets and file hosting sites, can only get you so far once serious changes start being made to a medical device,” said Jon Speer, founder and VP of QA/RA at Greenlight Guru. “Quality management systems shouldn’t get in the way of innovation; we’ve improved our change management capabilities to make high device quality possible through the QMS, not in spite of it.”

This announcement follows significant enhancements to Risk and Document Management workflows, the launch of Digital Design Reviews, and Greenlight Guru’s fourth consecutive quarter as a G2 Crowd market leader in the quality management software category. Clinical Care Options’ “Hep B Consult” Tool Shows Clinicians Are Missing the Mark on Managing HBV Infection

Hep B Consult: A Point-of-Care Interactive Decision Support Tool

These data indicate that chronic hepatitis B is being mismanaged in a sizeable numbers of cases around the globe

Many healthcare providers showed discordance from guideline recommendations in their management plans for patients with chronic hepatitis B infection, according to an analysis of data from the “Hep B Consult,” a decision support tool developed by Clinical Care Options (CCO) this year.

“Hep B Consult” allows users to define a patient case scenario using variables, such as HBeAg status, HBV DNA and ALT levels, and liver histology, and receive instant recommendations from American, European, and Asian Pacific HBV guidelines.

Worldwide, users entered more than 8000 cases between March and October 2019. In 4130 of these cases, the guidelines had clear recommendations of whether to treat the patient’s HBV infection and with what to treat, yet in 43% of these cases, clinicians had a management plan that differed from the guidelines.

In 39% of such cases, clinicians indicated that they would change their treatment plan to match the guidelines after using the “Hep B Consult” tool.

“These data indicate that chronic hepatitis B is being mismanaged in a sizeable numbers of cases around the globe,” said Edward King, MA, Executive Vice President of CCO. “Moreover, using ‘Hep B Consult’ may enable clinicians to improve outcomes for people with chronic HBV infection by helping them make optimal treatment choices.”

The “Hep B Consult” app was developed by CCO in collaboration with the American Liver Foundation, the Asian Health Foundation, and Practicing Clinicians Exchange and is available as a Web-based tool and as apps for Android and Apple devices at:

Android: https://bit.ly/2VGZbxC

Apple: https://apple.co/2UVZrM4

Web: https://www.clinicaloptions.com/HBVIDST

These results were presented November 8 at The Liver Meeting 2019 in Boston, Massachusetts, and can be reviewed at https://www.clinicaloptions.com/CCO/Publications/2019/11_2019_HEP_B_Consult.
