2020 Global Wellness Summit, Headed to “Start-Up Nation” Israel, Will Have Unprecedented Focus on Health & Wellness Technology

The Global Wellness Summit (GWS), the foremost gathering of international leaders in the $4.5 trillion global wellness economy, is headed to Tel Aviv, Israel, from November 10–13, 2020.

The GWS will not only put Israel’s creative health and wellness solutions on the world stage, it will introduce Israel’s powerful investment landscape to global wellness companies.

The Global Wellness Summit (GWS), the foremost gathering of international leaders in the $4.5 trillion global wellness economy, is headed to Tel Aviv, Israel, from November 10–13, 2020. Israel is known as the world’s Start-up Nation for boasting 6,000+ active start-ups (second only to Silicon Valley) that are busy reinventing everything from AI to alternative energy, and because no place on earth has such a dizzying mix of technologies and innovators in one space.

The GWS selected Tel Aviv for 2020 because it’s becoming ground zero for health and wellness technologies and investment—from digital healthcare innovations to engineering the future of healthy, sustainable food to new technologies for the fitness, beauty, travel, mental wellness and workplace wellness markets.

The Global Wellness Summit announced today that its 2020 conference will have the most powerful focus on health and wellness tech innovation (not only from within Israel, but globally) in its 14-year history, and that it will feature a Tech Innovation Pavilion for the first time, so attendees can get up close and personal with the most cutting-edge wellness start-ups.

“It’s never been more important for both big multinationals and leading wellness companies to study the most innovative start-ups if they want to stay ahead of the game in the fast-growing wellness space. And Israel, with so many brilliant new companies, is definitely one of the key places to look at,” said Amir Alroy, co-founder of Welltech1, a new Tel Aviv-based wellness innovation hub and microfund. “The GWS will not only put Israel’s creative health and wellness solutions on the world stage, it will introduce Israel’s powerful investment landscape to global wellness companies.”

Why Is Israel the Perfect Turf for Wellness Innovation?

While a small country of only eight million people, Israel is the world’s Start-up Nation for many reasons:

  • 600 new start-ups are established every year.
  • 500 multinational corporations (including Apple, Amazon, Google, Microsoft, etc.) have set up incubators or venture capital arms there.
  • The country ranks #1 in the world for R&D and VC investment as a percentage of GDP and raises venture capital per capita at two-and-a-half times the rate of the US and 30 times that of Europe—with a record $6.5 billion in high-tech start-up funding in 2018.*
  • Because so many unicorns (companies with $1 billion+ valuations) are Israeli founded: from Salesforce and SodaStream to GPS navigation system Waze, to real estate tech start-up Compass, to online home design platform Houzz, to home insurance disrupter Lemonade.

A storm of forces has come together to create this thriving start-up and health/wellness tech ecosystem.

There is the experience that entrepreneurs acquire during their mandatory army service, the emphasis on learning and world-class academic institutions, widespread immigration, and the Israeli entrepreneurial spirit.

In addition to a powerful private funding landscape, the government’s Innovation Authority makes Israel one of the only countries that funds start-ups without taking equity: giving grants to entrepreneurs (from Israel and elsewhere) to develop innovative technology without taking on debt. Israel distributed an estimated $500 million to start-ups in 2018 and recently established Digital Health as a crucial growth engine with its own budget.

Israeli Health & Wellness Start-Ups – A Few Success Stories

There are hundreds of health/wellness start-ups across Israel, and they have an outsized presence on annual global rankings for “best inventions.” The diversity of issues that they’re working to solve for is staggering, whether OrCam, which uses artificial vision to tell blind people what they’re looking at, to Upright Technologies’ wearable device that corrects people’s posture, to WaterGen’s Genny appliance that pulls moisture from the air to create drinkable water, to Missbeez, an on-demand massage and beauty platform.

Reinventing Medicine

Israeli start-ups are radically reinventing healthcare, from AI-based diagnostics to fertility-tech. Zebra Medical Vision uses AI to provide lifesaving, affordable medical scans that detect anomalies; Healthy.io converts smartphone cameras into clinical-grade medical devices; while Beyond Verbal analyzes a user’s voice to gather insights on their health and emotional state. Israel is a Femtech phenom, from Vayyar’s 4D technology that detects early-stage breast cancer to Nuvo, a pioneer in maternal-fetal connected health.

Reinventing Food

Israel is home to 750 companies in food tech,* and the Innovation Authority recently opened FoodNxt, a lab to help Israel lead the world in inventing better nutrition. Israel (where animal welfare is paramount) is a pioneer in meat substitutes: Aleph Farms engineers of cultured beef, developed the first slaughter-free steak, and were first to grow meat in space; other standouts include Future Meat Technologies, ZeroEgg and SuperMeann. Israeli start-ups such as DayTwo are cracking the microbiome, while companies such as Nutrino are out in front in virtual personalized nutrition platforms.

Reinventing Fitness

Numerous Israeli companies are fit-tech leaders reinventing the workout: Fitness22, a very successful online community/app, helps people get into the best shape of their lives; Moonrun, an at-home running device (using suspension and gravity), offers a low-impact solution to boring treadmills; Hyfit’s portable workout system with embedded sensors sends live motivational messages and feedback.

Connecticut Non-profit Expands Program Offering Unique Response to Opioid Crisis

“Connection is key, it’s the way out of addiction. An individual may not be ready for Recovery when they meet their coach in the ED but if a connection is made then the door is open. An EDRC doesn’t come with a plan for your Recovery, they guide you in developing your own plan that works for you”

Connecticut-based Non-profit, CCAR, continues to expand its pioneering Emergency Department Recovery Coach program, beginning service at its 20th hospital last week. The program, started about 2 years ago, is the most comprehensive of its kind nationwide and it continues to grow.

Emergency Department Recovery Coaches (EDRCs) are skilled, trained professionals who meet with patients admitted to a hospital Emergency Department as a result of an opioid overdose or other drug or alcohol related crisis. The EDRC role is a unique presence in hospital emergency departments. In the past, people who came to the ED for substance related issues would be seen exclusively by nurses, doctors, counselors, or other sorts of professionals with a medical or clinical background. An EDRC is not a clinician or a therapist, but a peer – a peer in pursuing and maintaining Recovery.

Many of CCAR’s coaches’ are in personal Recovery or have firsthand experience with addiction and Recovery. This lived experience, in addition to the battery of trainings that all CCAR coaches receive, enables the coaches to connect with the people they work with on a deep level.

“Connection is key, it’s the way out of addiction” says CCAR Emergency Department Recovery Coach, TJ Aitken. “An individual may not be ready for Recovery when they meet their coach in the ED but if a connection is made then the door is open. An EDRC doesn’t come with a plan for your Recovery, they guide you in developing your own plan that works for you.”

The program has been successful. In a two year period, CCAR’s Emergency Department Recovery Coach program grew from a small group of coaches serving a handful of hospitals to a 17 person team, operating in 20 hospitals across Connecticut. Between March 2017 and February 2019, CCAR EDRC’s responded to 4,517 calls. 92% of those interactions resulted in assertive linkage to care.

While the Emergency Department Recovery Coach program is an invaluable resource for patients who end up working with a coach, medical professionals also appreciate the benefit of having Recovery Coaches working in the ED.

“We have been witnessing the growing opioid epidemic in Connecticut firsthand and knew early on that tackling this ongoing issue was going to take a team approach and require services that expand beyond medical treatment,” said C. Steven Wolf, M.D., Chairman, Emergency Medicine at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford. “The peer connection the coach makes with the patient is extremely important, especially in the initial contact. The coach can help the patient see that recovery is possible since most, if not all, the coaches have had similar experiences. From their initial meeting with our patients to well beyond their time in our hospital, the recovery coaches provide a service that works symbiotically with the work of our medical care team.”

Connecticut has 38 Emergency Departments state wide. Having initiated service at it’s 20th hospital, program leadership is looking toward the future. “Our vision is to have our EDRCs in every Emergency Department in the state, and beyond” says EDRC Program Manager Jennifer Chadukiewicz. “As a woman in long term recovery, I can say that when we are having an addiction emergency, we go to the Emergency Department! In the past, this has not been the best strategy to get our needs met, and it frustrates the medical professionals who were also ill-equipped to help. Now when a person seeking help in their moment of need shows up at the most logical place for an emergency, we will be there.”

Everyone’s Invited to Surf with Santa on Cocoa Beach this Christmas Eve

NPI/Florida’s Space Coast Office of Tourism

“This is a festive, fun in the sun family event. Whether you’re big into surfing or just looking to make more unforgettable holiday memories, Surfing Santas should be at the top of your holiday bucket list.”

Cocoa Beach is preparing to host its 10th annual “Surfing Santas” event, an all-comers extravaganza that has become one of the world’s most-dazzling Santa-themed gatherings.

What began as a simple family beach day a decade ago has grown into the nation’s most beloved – and slightly zany – holiday tradition. Now, ten years in, there’s no better place for Santa to loosen up as he gets ready for his one annual workday than the surfing capital of the East Coast.

Last year, with a massive beachside crowd of more than 10,000 cheering them on, nearly 600 surfers took to the Atlantic all decked out in their best St. Nick outfits. This Christmas Eve morning, the infamous group of Surfing Santas are ready to hit the beach again with hopes of breaking their own record for the number of Santa Clauses simultaneously riding the waves.

“Surfing Santas is truly a sight to behold,” said event organizer George Trosset, who got the craze rolling somewhat innocently on Dec. 24, 2009, when a news photographer captured him wearing a Santa getup while surfing with his family. “Watching this explode into one of the largest and most-talked about holiday events has been nothing short of phenomenal.”

There are no skill or age requirements to participate as a Surfing Santa and the event is free. Just don your most-festive holiday garb and grab a board. Spectators are invited to dress up as well – cash prizes are in store for the best themed costumes, and one “people’s choice” grand prize winner in the costume contest will take home a Surfing Santas surfboard.

“This is a festive, fun in the sun family event. Whether you’re big into surfing or just looking to make more unforgettable holiday memories, Surfing Santas should be at the top of your holiday bucket list,” said Peter Cranis, the executive director of Florida’s Space Coast Office of Tourism. “For our guests from out of town, it’s a great opportunity to get into the holiday spirit while soaking up our Florida sunshine and unbeatable, laid-back Space Coast vibe.”

Since 2013, Surfing Santas has raised more than $130,000 for charity, through donations and sales of official Surfing Santas T-shirts. All proceeds benefit the work of two local organizations: the Grind for Life cancer support group and the 20-year-old Florida Surf Museum.

For more information about Surfing Santas and where to stay along the Space Coast, visit http://www.visitspacecoast.com. The Dec. 24 event will begin at 8 a.m. along the beach near 2 Minutemen Causeway (where the causeway intersects with Route A1A N. Atlantic Avenue) and is expected to continue until noon. Plenty of parking is available and numerous area restaurants will be open to serve Surfing Santa participants and spectators.

Aerial Fitness and Indoor Rowing in Boston Found to Reduce Stress and Improve Overall Health

A significant number of Swet Studio’s members, who have regularly participated in the studio’s mind body practice, have reported improvements not only with physical health, but in reducing perceived stresses and as well as their overall happiness.

Such anecdotal evidence is supported by evolving discoveries in the medical literature. A recent study was undertaken by the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine and the Home Base Program at Massachusetts General Hospital, in collaboration with the Naval Medical Center San Diego. Participants in the study were primarily active duty members of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corp – people battling significant perceived stress or chronic pain. Results of the study suggested that a mind-body program may improve physical and psychological functioning. This is in in accord with what Swet Studio® has seen with its members.

Swet Studio welcomes newcomers to guide them on their journey. The Swet Studio® Method incorporates a holistic, “Mind Body” approach to health and fitness. Through a variety of small group classes, ranging from aerial yoga, indoor rowing, and floating mediation in a silk hammock, the Swet Studio® Method utilizes the concept mindfulness as a key element of its Practice. Swet Studio® trains the body and calms the mind.

Some of the Studio’s stanchest members are in their sixties and older, and the progress they have made is phenomenal. The first step of the journey, is leaving preconceptions at the door, signing up for a Beginner’s Class and simply getting started. It is time for a change.
