Glaucoma, “The Sneak Thief of Sight,” Continues to Affect Vision of Millions of Americans

Prevent Blindness provides free resources to the public for January’s National Glaucoma Awareness Month

“The year 2020 is an ideal reminder for all of us to make the resolution today to save our vision for tomorrow,” said Jeff Todd, president and CEO of Prevent Blindness.

According to estimates from the Prevent Blindness report, “Future of Vision: Forecasting the Prevalence and Costs of Vision Problems,” more than 3.2 million Americans ages 40 and over have glaucoma in the year 2020. The number is expected to increase as the population ages. Glaucoma, often referred to as the “The Sneak Thief of Sight,” is a leading cause of vision loss that damages the optic nerve. Although symptoms may not be noticeable at first, glaucoma slowly diminishes peripheral vision (side vision), making activities such as driving increasingly difficult.

January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month and Prevent Blindness, the nation’s oldest volunteer eye health and safety nonprofit organization, seeks to educate the public on the disease, including risk factors, types of glaucoma, treatment options and more. Prevent Blindness offers a dedicated web page providing patients and their caregivers with free information at https://www.preventblindness.org/glaucoma or its online resource, Living Well with Low Vision at https://lowvision.preventblindness.org.

More women than men have glaucoma. Risk factors for glaucoma also include:

  • Age- The older you are, the greater you are at risk (especially those more than 60 years old).
  • Race- African-Americans age 40 and over are 4-5 times more likely to have glaucoma than others. Hispanics are also at increased risk for glaucoma as they age. Those of Asian and Native American descent are at increased risk for angle closure glaucoma.
  • Family History- If you have a direct relative with glaucoma, you are more likely to get glaucoma. If you are diagnosed with glaucoma, strongly encourage your family members to get complete eye exams.
  • Medical History- You are at higher risk if you have a history of high pressure in the eyes, previous eye injury, long term steroid use, or are farsighted or nearsighted.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) also states that those with diabetes, migraines, high blood pressure, poor blood circulation or other health problems affecting the whole body are at increased risk of glaucoma.

“The year 2020 is an ideal reminder for all of us to make the resolution today to save our vision for tomorrow,” said Jeff Todd, president and CEO of Prevent Blindness. “By detecting vision problems and treating them early, including those from glaucoma, we can help to avoid significant vision impairment.”

The AAO’s EyeCare America program provides eye care at no out-of-pocket cost to medically underserved seniors age 65 and older, and glaucoma exams to those at increased risk. For more information, visit https://www.aao.org/eyecare-america.

Oral Cancer Prevention and Early Detection

Dr Zorro from Smiles For Health in Bressi Ranch Carlsbad, CA

Dr Diana Zorro

People commonly hear that cancer is best treated in its early stages, and that is correct. The problem though, is that there is a low level of awareness and understanding, in the general population, of symptoms of oral cancer and how to detect them. Dr. Diana Zorro, from Smiles For Health in the Bressi Ranch community in Carlsbad, CA states, “The chances for a complete and full recovery are always best when early detection occurs. Further more, most patients don’t realize that there are simple preventative measures that can be taken to lower your risk for oral cancer.” She believes that you need to treat the entire body, when it comes to preventing oral cancer, instead of just reacting to symptoms. Proactivity versus Reactivity is always the preferred route.

Studies conducted by the University Hospital Regensburg show how little the general population thinks of oral cancer. Most of the participants viewed smoking cigarettes or alcohol consumption as primary causes of lung cancer or colon cancer. In fact even a basic understanding of oral cancer was nearly non existent. In an article found in the magazine Psychology and Health, the conclusion is drawn that people are generally not aware of oral cancer like they would be other types of cancer. They state that early detection requires that people are made aware of “signs, symptoms, risk factors, and preventative measures”.

When signs of oral cancer exist, early detection and immediate treatment is key. Dr. Zorro believes, prevention is the preferred method of treatment. It all starts with good oral hygiene at home and regular visits to your dentist. Specific probiotic bacteria have been found, in some studies, to lower risks of certain types of oral cancer. So, including different types of probiotics in your daily health regimen can lower your risk for oral cancer. Although widely known, avoid smoking tobacco, the leading cause of oral cancer.

Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon Sees Marked Increased in Breast Implant Removal Procedures at his Practice

Beverly Hills-based plastic surgeon Payam Jarrah-Nejad, M.D., F.I.C.S., F.A.C.S., aka Dr. J.

The good news for women who have had textured implants and who are worried about possible health impacts or other issues is that explanation is an extremely safe procedure with an excellent prognosis on more than one level

A Beverly Hills plastic surgeon says that interest from prospective patients regarding explanation (i.e., implant removal) procedures has skyrocketed since last July. That was when pharma giant Allergan issued a global voluntary recall of its Biocell textured breast implants. The recall was based on a government warning regarding a rare cancer called anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (ALCL). Beverly Hills-based plastic surgeon Payam Jarrah-Nejad, M.D., F.I.C.S., F.A.C.S., aka Dr. J, says that, while he has never used textured implants on his primary breast augmentation patients, he has removed a very large number of them with consistently outstanding results.

“The good news for women who have had textured implants and who are worried about possible health impacts or other issues is that explanation is an extremely safe procedure with an excellent prognosis on more than one level,” says Dr. J. “The procedure is called En Bloc Capsulectomy. All that means is that the procedure allows us to safely remove the entire capsule without any contact with the surrounding tissues. Patients are free to make their own decision about what they would like to do next. If they feel like they prefer to do without breast augmentation, for the time being, that’s not a problem. On the other hand, they have plenty of options if they want to get new implants,” says Dr. J.

“Many patients take the opportunity to fine-tune their prior results by going for a larger or a smaller implant and they are typically very pleased with their final outcomes,” says Dr. J. The plastic surgeon adds that, in the absence of any immediate concerns, there is no right or wrong answer to whether women with textured implants should have them removed. However, women should understand they have the option and the procedure is not only safe but typically has a relatively short recovery time.

“At the same time, of course, it’s also important to go to an experienced and skilled surgeon,” says Dr. J. “My very strong advice is that prospective patients should seek only board-certified plastic surgeons. People don’t always realize that plastic surgery is one of the most demanding of all medical disciplines. It’s important to know that your surgeon has undergone rigorous training both in terms of physical safety as well as the ultimate aesthetic outcome,” he adds. “The safety and health of our patients is always a priority. We offer our patients a comprehensive consultation to allow them to make a well-informed decision. We have had many patients who have felt much better after explantation,” Dr. J said.

Dr. J’s qualifications as a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon double board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery can be seen online along with testimonials and before-and-after photos. Interested readers can call (310) 228-3151.

Young Philanthropist And Founder Of Little Saint Nick Foundation Celebrates 22nd Birthday By Ringing Nyse Closing Bell Christmas Eve

“We’re so grateful for the national spotlight this opportunity offered the Little Saint Nick Foundation,” said Mohler. Our work has inspired thousands of kids to take up the mantle of serving the greater good, creating a national youth movement and any attention on our foundation is a blessing, espe

For the second year in a row, Ray Mohler, Jr., the Founder and Chairman of the Board of the Little Saint Nick Foundation presided over the Christmas Eve NYSE closing bell. Mohler jointly celebrated his 22nd birthday and the anniversary of the founding of his 16-year-old charity, which was established with the philosophy of “healthy kids inspiring and helping sick kids,” after his own frightening ER visit.

The Little Saint Nick Foundation (LSNF) helps sick kids cope with an illness or injury by following children from the time they’re admitted to the Emergency Department, throughout their stay in the hospital, until their release. The LSNF’s goal is to improve what is normally a scary and confusing experience for kids. By doing something fun to keep their mind off their illness, LSNF makes a hospital a more kid-friendly place, providing children with an escape from doctors, nurses and medical treatments. The ripple effect of this benefits the whole family.

“We’re so grateful for the national spotlight this opportunity offered the Little Saint Nick Foundation,” said Mohler. Our work has inspired thousands of kids to take up the mantle of serving the greater good, creating a national youth movement and any attention on our foundation is a blessing, especially at this time of year. In our 16-years of existence we have helped over 2 million kids and families in need, and in 2019 we helped over 250,000.”

As soon as they’re admitted, kids receive an age-appropriate Emergency Department Welcome Bag filled with donated coloring books, crayons, stuffed animals and hand-written Get Well cards. Most importantly, the cards are written and the bags are assembled by kid-volunteers who show up monthly for “stuffing events.” These bags cost so little, just $8.00 to put together and deliver to local hospitals but accomplish so much in reducing the fear children normally have in an Emergency Department.

The LSNF is driven to not only help kids and families in need who are ill, but to inspire kids and young adults to give back to those kids in need. LSNF has developed many anxiety relief programs that include an emergency department gift bag program, family care package program, hospital toy give-away parties, and wish granting all centered upon improving the lives of sick kids and their families.

Mohler’s philanthropic journey began when he was four-years-old and admitted to the ER. Though treated and released within 12 hours, he was diagnosed with a rare treatable childhood blood/bone disorder. On his birthday the following year, worried about the kids who weren’t able to be treated and released as quickly, he decided to donate his birthday and Christmas gifts to sick kids in the same hospital where he’d been diagnosed. With his parents help, he founded the LSNF and, with help of other kids, he has continued to do what he can to help lift the spirits of kids in hospitals.

Now a senior at the University of Tampa, Mohler has taken the reigns at LSNF and has grown into a well-respected youth philanthropist. He’s been featured in New York Newsday and on Nickelodeon’s The Halo Effect, a series that highlights extraordinary teens who strive to make the world a better place. WCBS News & Pix11 News featured segments highlighting the work of LSNF and Mohler’s journey of philanthropy. The American Meditation Institute Inaugurates National Conscience Month to Instruct and Inspire Humanity on How to Let Their Conscience be Their Guide in Making Choices

Let your Conscience be your guide!

Because all our problems begin with thoughts coming from the human mind, these problems and the associated pain can only be solved by using the unerring wisdom of the conscience. — Leonard Perlmutter

The first-ever National Conscience Month is being launched January 1, 2020 by The American Meditation Institute (AMI), an organization devoted to providing comprehensive training in Yoga Science—the world’s oldest holistic mind/body medicine. With the mission of encouraging individuals across the nation to practice using their conscience as a guide, this month-long observance is vital education––especially for those burdened by stress, burnout, fear, anger and the general discontent that pervades our society.

New Year’s Eve means the making of resolutions for millions of Americans. However, while stating a resolution can be easy, sticking to it often proves to be quite difficult. The challenge comes soon after the first of the year when old, unconscious habits kick back in, or we find we are not fully committed to the resolution–– and we lose our focus and will power. This year, National Conscience Month reminds us to use the inborn technology of our Conscience for creating and keeping personally meaningful and culturally beneficial resolutions.

The inspiration for National Conscience Month grew out of the Yoga Science “Law of Karma” which states simply that thoughts lead to words, actions and, eventually, to consequences. According to Leonard Perlmutter, AMI founder and originator of Conscience Month, “This law of cause and effect is as real and unavoidable as the Law of Gravity. Once we appreciate the mechanics of the “Law of Karma” (that thought precedes action, and action precedes consequence), we all can start experiencing the unimagined, profound benefits to be found in relying on the unerring wisdom of the Conscience as it guides the thoughts we choose to think, words we speak and actions we take.”

National Conscience Month’s (January 2020) campaign will:

  • Remind, educate and raise awareness about the value of using your conscience as a guide to making better decisions.
  • Build and activate a national movement that embraces the role of conscience-driven choices in experiencing more health, happiness and security, while creating more rewarding lives for our families, communities, states and nation.
  • Encourage individual actions through simple experiments that aid in increasing positivity, self-confidence, and self-reliance.
  • TWO SPECIAL EVENTS:

1. A free screening of the movie “Peaceful Warrior” to be followed by an engaging discussion about the importance of using your Conscience as your guide for a healthy, happy, and productive life. This two-part event will be presented at the Cohoes Music Hall, 58 Remsen Street, Cohoes, NY, on January 9, 2020 at 7 pm.

2. Four high school students from the Capital region in New York State will be awarded the first-ever National Conscience Month scholarships totaling $2,000. Recipients will be selected through original artistic creations inspired by the use or denial of the Conscience. Submissions will be accepted in four categories: Creative Writing; Visual Art (two-dimensional); Music or Song; and Video.

Improved Pharma expands services and hits major milestones in 2019

Looking forward to 2020, research will involve improving the detectability of amorphous domains in solid samples via a collaboration with Purdue University’s TEM facilities.

2019 was another great year for Improved Pharma LLC, highlighted by a highly successful AAPS meeting and several internal advances in our problem-solving capabilities. At the AAPS, the Improved Pharma booth was grouped with other formulation companies and was able to establish several contacts and initial collaborations. Improved Pharma was near Hovione, experts in spray drying, and Biddle Sawyer, suppliers of some exciting new excipients. Improved Pharma presented a poster and a Rapid Fire presentation on its Synchrotron methods.

  • Formulation – The most interesting formulation project this year involved re-formulating a drug product to vastly increase the solubility. The work, still on-going, has already resulted in newly filed Intellectual Property for the client.
  • Synchrotron X-ray problem solving and analysis – Several projects this year utilized synchrotron technology. Most projects focused on PDF work or the detection of low amounts of polymorphic contaminants, but there was also a project needing to detect low amounts of amorphous material in a highly crystalline sample. Improved Pharma continues to develop this methodology and is pushing the capabilities even further
  • Analytical Testing – There is always a need for analytical testing, and Improved Pharma continues to expand their capabilities through a combination of resources at Purdue and the acquisition of key pieces of equipment
  • Solving pharmaceutical problems – The most interesting projects are those requiring outside-the-box thinking. It’s not uncommon to have unexpected results during drug development, and sometimes it can be a challenge to fully understand the results, what caused them, and how they can be improved. These projects continue to be some of the most rewarding projects Improved Pharma undertakes, as it is the key to innovations, new intellectual property, and reduced time to market.
  • Research – Today’s problems could be better solved by tomorrow’s solutions. Improved Pharma has always believed that investing time and energy in the advancement of pharmaceutical sciences helps everyone to succeed. Research efforts in 2019 focused on the use of subtractions and new software tools to isolate and identify intramolecular and intermolecular API domains in solid dispersions.

Looking forward to 2020, research will involve improving the detectability of amorphous domains in solid samples via a collaboration with Purdue University’s TEM facilities. Another key area of research will involve collaboration with Dr. Richard Weber, President of Materials Development Inc. in Evanston, IL. This research will continue exploring the many ways “lab on a drop” using acoustic levitation can accelerate development and reduce time to IND by performing screens in just one or two days with very small amounts of material. These research efforts support Improved Pharma’s long-range strategies that rely on the concepts of accelerated development and quality by design. By utilizing problem solving and analytical capabilities, it is possible to develop formulations and methods that both accelerate development and build quality into a system.

We wish all our clients the best for 2020 and do not hesitate to contact us if we can be of assistance.

About Improved Pharma

Improved Pharma is a research and information company dedicated to improving pharmaceutical methods, formulations, and processes. Dr. Stephen Byrn and Sarah Byrn founded the company in 2006 after the successful acquisition of their first company, SSCI. Dr. Pamela Smith joined the company in 2018 after an 18-year tenure with SSCI. Improved Pharma offers services such as analytical testing, synchrotron-based formulation design, and expert consulting aiding the development and defense of intellectual property matters.

Sara Colvin’s newly released “Breaking Free” is an inspiring account of how the author recovered from drug and alcohol addiction

News Image

“Breaking Free”: a heart-touching journal focusing on one young woman’s troubled early life involving the use and abuse of drugs and alcohol. “Breaking Free” is the creation of published author Sara Colvin, a woman in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. She has experienced the underworld of addiction, as well as the beautiful life which recovery will bring.

Colvin writes, “After nine and a half years of recovery, Sara had built a successful life for herself and her daughter. A life they both found rewarding, exciting, and prosperous. Until the day she relapsed into an uncontrollable addiction.

“An eighteen-month drug run came crashing to an end in the back of a police car, with Sara in shackles and handcuffs. She was sent to the county jail where she had a million-dollar bail and was facing over a dozen serious felony charges. Not knowing if she would be spending the coming years of her life as an inmate in state prison, Sara was inspired to create this personal memoir.

“‘One evening early on, I heard a voice speaking to me, “Prepare your heart to receive my gift.” I cannot explain how I recognized the voice of God. I simply knew that I was to embark upon a journey illuminated by revelation and marked by agony and ecstasy. Alone and secluded in the darkness of confinement, I committed to embark upon the path ahead.’

“Sara’s real-life account affirms that addiction is deadly, progressive, and incurable. Her experience also proves that there is a solution called recovery. Sara details both in an intensely moving memoir.”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Sara Colvin’s new book shares a remarkable message to the readers that addiction is deadly, progressive, and incurable, but the only solution for it is recovery—it is available and possible for everyone, for even the lifeless among the hopeless.

With this book, Colvin lays out all her experiences in the life of who she was until she recovered from addiction so the readers will know how drugs and alcohol ruin the life of a person if not prevented.
