Women’s Dry Eye Supplementation Revealed By Sharon Kleyne & Ilene K. Gipson, M.D.

Air Date: 23 December 2019

Guest: Ilene K. Gipson, M.D. (Boston, Massachusetts), Professor of Ophthalmology, Harvard Medical School, https://www.schepens.harvard.edu/womens-eye-healthorg/collabs-and-strategic-partnerships/womens-eye-healthorg.html

https://www.voiceamerica.com/episode/119558/encore-dry-eye-syndrome-among-women-us-high-school-students-building-wells-in-india

“We must be proactive about water and water education,” says talk radio host Sharon Kleyne, “because without water there is no life.” Kleyne, host of the internationally syndicated radio program, The Sharon Kleyne Hour Water Life Science®/Nature’s Pharma®, The Power of Water® & Your Health sponsored by Nature’s Tears® EyeMist® on VoiceAmerica and produced by Rose Hong, founder and director of Global Dragon TV in Washington, D.C., is also concerned about the rise of dry eye disease caused by water evaporation among women.

Dr. Ilene K. Gipson, M.D., internationally decorated Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School, agrees with Kleyne that better water education and ocular health education is essential to finding answers to dry eye disease among women. “Dry eye is primarily a post-menopausal disease in women,” says Gipson, recipient of a MERIT Award from the National Eye Institute and the Friedenwald Award given annually at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology meeting to honor the outstanding research of senior scientists in the basic or clinical sciences as applied to ophthalmology. “Like the upper GI system or any other system of the body,” says Gipson, “the eyes are a little system that is so complex. When any part of it goes awry, then you get the symptoms of dry eye.”

“We need more education,” insists Kleyne. “The moment a baby is born, a lifelong natural evaporation process begins. So does the need to learn throughout life abut steps that must be taken to ensure good health. You must drink eight-to-ten glasses of water every day,” Kleyne continues. You must get lots of sleep and eat a diet that is right for you. You must learn to breathe with the planet and the universe, and you must perform moderate exercise every day. Doing these things mean you are being proactive about your health.”

Gipson, who holds the U.S. Patent Mucin 5AC measurement concurs. “We must learn beyond the old bromides about carrots being good for your eyes and remembering to sit far enough away from the television. People need more information. For instance, too many people have no idea than you can get melanoma of the eye.”

Kleyne teaches that dry eye and other diseases can be managed better with an improved understand of how dry eye and body water evaporation work. “We need that education!” Kleyne repeats.

“The thing we want to get out there,” says Gipson, is an attitude about taking care of our whole body. We need to think and act in terms of a holistic process for the entire system. Think about that in terms of getting messages out. We need to stop thinking so much just in terms of heart disease, diabetes or breast cancer, but in holistic terms of the entire body together.”

NeoTract Designates Dr. T. Casey McCullough as UroLift® Center of Excellence

News Image

“We are pleased to recognize Dr. Casey McCullough as a UroLift Center of Excellence for his commitment to providing consistent care to BPH patients using the UroLift System treatment,” said Dave Amerson,

NeoTract, a wholly owned subsidiary of Teleflex Incorporated (NYSE:TFX) focused on addressing unmet needs in the field of urology, today announced that Dr. T. Casey McCullough, MD Advanced Urology in Johns Creek, GA., has been designated as a UroLift® Center of Excellence. The designation recognizes that Dr. McCullough has achieved a high level of training and experience with the UroLift® System and demonstrated a commitment to exemplary care for men suffering from symptoms associated with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), also known as enlarged prostate.

Recommended for the treatment of BPH in both the American Urological Association and European Association of Urology clinical guidelines, the FDA-cleared Prostatic Urethral Lift procedure using the UroLift System is a proven, minimally invasive technology for treating lower urinary tract symptoms due to BPH. The UroLift permanent implants, delivered during a transurethral outpatient procedure, relieve prostate obstruction and open the urethra directly without cutting, heating, or removing prostate tissue.

The UroLift Center of Excellence program is designed to highlight urologists who are committed to educating their patients on BPH and the UroLift System as a treatment option and consistently seek to deliver excellent patient outcomes and experiences.

“We are pleased to recognize Dr. Casey McCullough as a UroLift Center of Excellence for his commitment to providing consistent care to BPH patients using the UroLift System treatment,” said Dave Amerson, president of the Teleflex Interventional Urology business unit. “This achievement has helped many patients experience durable, long-term relief from the burdensome symptoms of BPH while preserving sexual function*1,2.”

Over 40 million men in the United States are affected by BPH, a condition that occurs when the prostate gland that surrounds the male urethra becomes enlarged with advancing age and begins to obstruct the urinary system. Symptoms of BPH often include interrupted sleep and urinary problems and can cause loss of productivity, depression and decreased quality of life.

Medication is often the first-line therapy for enlarged prostate, but relief can be inadequate and temporary. Side effects of medication treatment can include sexual dysfunction, dizziness and headaches, prompting many patients to quit using the drugs. For these patients, the classic alternative is surgery that cuts, heats or removes prostate tissue to open the blocked urethra. While current surgical options can be very effective in relieving symptoms, they can also leave patients with permanent side effects such as urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and retrograde ejaculation.

About the UroLift® System

The FDA-cleared UroLift System is a proven, minimally invasive technology for treating lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The UroLift permanent implants, delivered during a minimally invasive transurethral outpatient procedure, relieve prostate obstruction and open the urethra directly without cutting, heating, or removing prostate tissue. Clinical data from a pivotal 206-patient randomized controlled study showed that patients with enlarged prostate receiving UroLift implants reported rapid and durable symptomatic and urinary flow rate improvement without compromising sexual function*1,2. Patients also experienced a significant improvement in quality of life. Over 100,000 men have been treated with the UroLift System in the U.S. Most common adverse events reported include hematuria, dysuria, micturition urgency, pelvic pain, and urge incontinence. Most symptoms were mild to moderate in severity and resolved within two to four weeks after the procedure. The Prostatic Urethral Lift procedure using the UroLift System is recommended for the treatment of BPH in both the American Urological Association and European Association of Urology clinical guidelines. The UroLift System is available in the U.S., Europe, Australia, Canada, Mexico and South Korea. Learn more at http://www.UroLift.com.

“To be chosen as a 2020 TIL of the year, is such an honor and blessing for me! I’ve been fortunate to have witnessed the magic from the launch of Vol. I, five years ago,” she said. “ At that event, I thought to myself… ‘What a beautiful way to exhibit people’s successes in life!’ One year later, I was one of those authors who shared her story. Shortly afterwards we began the Wintrust and TIL partnership. Our mission is to continue to impact our communities and elevate others by sharing stories of the TIL authors. I am excited to see the fruitful happenings for 2020 and most importantly, I am ready to continue to spread the magic and make a difference!”

Castro, a Vol. V author, is the regional external affairs manager at Comcast in the Greater Chicago Region. She was chosen for her dedication, commitment and ongoing volunteer work with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund and Telemundo Chicago’s Action Board.

In accepting her award, Castro stated that she will continue to support all women through her philanthropic and work endeavors.

Today’s Inspired Latina Releases Today’s Inspired Young Latina In National Book Launch

Several young Hispanic women celebrate their becoming first-time authors with TIL creator Jacqueline S. Ruiz at the book launch of “Today’s Inspired Young Latina.”

“When I was in high school, there was very little representation of Latino authorship. There were very few stories that I could identify with or relate to culturally. These ladies are changing that narrative and unleashing the endless possibilities for their generation.”

Several young Hispanic women showcased their gratitude and joy as proud first-time authors as they and Jacqueline S. Ruiz, the creator of the international Today’s Inspired Latina (TIL) book series, launched the book debut of “Today’s Inspired Young Latina” in front of friends and family.

The festive event recently took place at J. C. Restoration, a premier Hispanic-owned restoration company in Rolling Meadows. Written by Ruiz and Alexandria Rios Taylor with a preface by acclaimed Hispanic actor Edward James Olmos, the book details stories of young Latinas overcoming obstacles and creating their own opportunities, as they become part of a dynamic and inspirational generation in American society.

“Today is another amazing representation of what it means to believe in a dream that is bigger than all of us,” said Ruiz, one of the book’s co-authors. “And today we have the privilege of elevating 14 young Latinas that reached out to us. They believe in something. They wowed us with their presentations that captivated our hearts and minds.”

The contributing authors in the book are: Evelyn Lozano, Alondra Ivette Guevara, Arianna Urrutia, Gina Aridal Pardino, Giselle Gonzalez, Andrea Vallejo, Samantha Ante, Maria Clara Ospina, Daniela Limon, Yahayra Argueta, Erica Franco, Gabrielle Hernández Franch, Evelyn Lonzano, Scarlett Magaña-Singh.

Ruiz explained that the idea about getting young Latinas to share their stories came from TIL author Elizabeth Colón-Rivera. From then the seed was planted to premiere the first ever Young LATINATalks at Naperville’s North Central College in September. A natural extension was to then capture these stories in an anthology book.

Hernández Franch, one of the book’s authors, wrote about her initial dreams of becoming a doctor. Life and God had other plans for her. Becoming a contributor was as an amazing journey for her.

“People say that there are three things that change your life,” she said. “It’s the people you meet, the events you attend and the books that you’ve read have the power to change your life. And I’m here at this stage, at this incredible event with the right people holding the right book.”

Taylor, also the dean of students at Glenbard West High School in Glen Ellyn, would have appreciated a book like this when she was a teenager. Unfortunately, there were not many inspirational stories to find. She hopes that will change with this new book.

“When I was in high school, there was very little representation of Latino authorship,” she said. “There were very few stories that I could identify with or relate to culturally. These ladies are changing that narrative and unleashing the endless possibilities for their generation.”

Today’s Young Inspired Latina is available on Amazon for $14.97.
