The Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN) today announced that its Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse (CPEN) specialty nursing certification program has been reaccredited by the Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification (ABSNC).

The CPEN is a national board certification earned by registered nurses (RNs) who demonstrate advanced knowledge and clinical judgment in all aspects of pediatric emergency care, including providing direct care, health care facilitation, education, and advocacy for pediatric emergency patients and their families.

“Infants and children have unique medical needs that must be considered when providing emergency services, and CPEN-certified RNs bring that essential pediatric emergency expertise to emergency care teams and the pediatric patients and families they care for,” said BCEN Director of Certification and Accreditation, Amy Grand, MSN, RN.

“Reaccreditation demonstrates that the CPEN program continues to meet the highest industry standards and also serves as an independent indicator for nurses, consumers and healthcare organizations of the continued, consistent quality of the credentialing body—in this case, BCEN,” said Grand.

Expert pediatric emergency nurses are needed and in demand. According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality report, “Overview of Pediatric Emergency Visits, 2015: HCUP Statistical Brief #242”:

• Pediatric emergency visits constituted roughly 20% of all ED visits.
• There were 30 million ED visits for children aged 18 or under.
• 17% of all children sought emergency care at least once.
• Infants and children under age 5 accounted for 40% of pediatric ED visits.

There are over 5,200 CPENs delivering expert pediatric emergency care in mixed and pediatric emergency departments, children’s hospitals, trauma centers, and prehospital and transport settings. The CPEN was introduced in January 2009 and deemed a Magnet-accepted certification program in February 2009.

What is accreditation?

Accreditation provides an impartial third-party validation that a certification program has met recognized national industry standards for the development, implementation and maintenance of that program. More specifically, ABSNC accreditation is a comprehensive and rigorous process whereby a nursing specialty certification body demonstrates that a particular certification program adheres to ABSNC’s 18 accreditation standards including organizational autonomy, basis in a body of research-based knowledge, nondiscrimination, test development, validity, reliability, test administration, test security, fairness of passing score, recertification, confidentiality, and appeals.

The Most Common Eye Diseases And How They’re Treated

The formation of cataracts happens so slowly that they often go unnoticed until vision declines to a significant level. They can occur in one or both eyes and cause the lens responsible for clear vision to cloud over, causing blurriness and eventual loss of vision. Most people regard cataracts as a part of the aging process, but they can also form after an injury to the eye or from another disease.

Early diagnosis and monitoring will determine as and when treatment becomes necessary—a relatively easy procedure by which the damaged lens is removed and an intraocular lens is implanted in its place. Such an operation generally takes place during day surgery, with a return to normal vision and activities within a few days to weeks.

Macular degeneration is a potentially serious eye condition that can arise due to aging or perhaps a genetic predisposition. Catching this potential cause of blindness at the earliest stages is crucial to slowing its evolution and ensuring the best vision for the longest time.

Glaucoma is another sight-threatening affliction that, if diagnosed and treated early, can be controlled. This is a condition in which pressure builds within the eye, and without treatment to reduce this can destroy the optic nerve and cause blindness.

Entropion is an uncomfortable eye disease that causes the edge of the eyelid and eyelashes to curl inwards, irritating the cornea. If allowed to progress the eye can become ulcerated, sensitive to light, and ultimately cause permanent visual impairment. It’s usually associated with burns or injury to the eye/s or as a complication of surgery.

Another common eye disease seen in all ages is that of conjunctivitis. Not only does it lead to inflammation of the lining of the eyelids that causes pain, itching, and burning, it’s also extremely contagious so early diagnosis and treatment are essential.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure

When it comes to eyesight it’s a case of forewarned is forearmed. In most cases, even serious conditions, such as glaucoma, can be effectively treated and controlled, as long as they’re discovered at an early stage. This is why regular eye examinations by a specialist are so important. Because many of these conditions can be genetic, people of all ages should consider a proactive approach with regular annual checks.

Donor Network West, the federally designated organ and tissue recovery organization for Northern California and Northern Nevada, announced that it ended 2019 with an unprecedented increase in the number of organ donors. The number of organs transplanted was the highest in the history of the organization.

The 411 organ donors and 1,198 of organs transplanted represent an increase of 29 percent and 14 percent over 2018, respectively. There were 2,297 tissue donors – also an increase over last year.

No other organ procurement organization in the U.S. has experienced this level of growth in the number of organ donors in one year.

For more than three decades, Donor Network West has connected a donor’s gift to those in need in its donation service area of 45 counties. More than half (53 percent) of the 2,507 organ and tissue donors made their decision to be a donor in advance and took the step to sign up on official donor registries. This humanitarian act is a testament to the generosity of the communities served by the nonprofit.

In January of 2019, Donor Network West welcomed a new Chief Executive Officer, Janice F. Whaley, who committed to professional staff development and regionalized efforts to better serve the diverse communities that comprise the organization’s donation service area. A concentrated focus on providing donor families with the highest level of service and support resulted in more families authorizing donation for their loved ones.
