FutuRx, Israel’s leading biopharmaceutical incubator, a partnership of OrbiMed Israel Partners, Johnson & Johnson Innovation – JJDC, and Takeda Ventures, Inc, operating under a tender from the Israeli Innovation Authority (IIA) has recently launched a new portfolio company – Epeius Pharma in collaboration with Ramot at Tel-Aviv University and Glasgow University.

Epeius pharma develops next generation biological vehicles for delivery of therapeutic proteins into the central nervous system (CNS). Efficient and predictable therapeutic delivery is particularly challenging in neurological diseases due to the blood-brain barrier (BBB), which tightly regulates the transport of molecules to the brain, and blocks the transport of most large, charged and hydrophilic molecules, which are common features of therapeutic agents. The lack of efficient CNS delivery methods limits protein replacement therapy and remains to be one of the greatest unmet medical needs preventing successful treatment for debilitating neurological disorders.

The developed technology will utilize a novel biological platform and apply cell and gene therapy approaches to overcome these challenges. This platform will enable the introduction of therapeutic proteins into the CNS thereby potentially treating and even reversing the devastating effects of neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative diseases.

Epeius pharma will focus on development of the novel drug delivery platform and its combination with several therapeutic candidates with an aim to be clinically tested and validated in relevant patient populations. Some of the clinical conditions to be targeted are orphan diseases with no alternative treatment methods available.

Epeius Pharma was founded based on the joint research efforts of Prof. Oded Rechavi and Shahar Bracha, of the Department of Neurobiology, Wise Faculty of Life Sciences & Sagol School of Neuroscience, Tel Aviv University, and Dr. Lilach Sheiner, Senior lecturer and Research Fellow at the Wellcome Center of Integrative Parasitology (WCIP), University of Glasgow, and was licensed from Ramot, the technology transfer company of Tel-Aviv University and Glasgow University. “It’s amazing to see how an idea becomes a reality. We started from a very basic question: can we make-use of Toxoplasma’s unique features so that it would secrete human proteins into neurons? I’m thrilled that the answer was ‘yes’, and that this concept is now being translated into a drug delivery platform,” said Prof. Rechavi.

“Toxoplasma naturally crosses the BBB and secrets molecules into neurons in the brain. By taking advantage of these features we can turn Toxoplasma into an efficient currier for molecules needed in the brain to alleviate and reverse the symptoms of harsh neurodegenerative diseases,” added Dr. Lilach Sheiner.

“We are delighted to partner with FutuRx to launch Epeius Pharma which will leverage the natural pathways of the brain parasite Toxoplasma gondii to deliver therapeutics into the brain,” said Rechavi and Sheiner.

California Farmworkers, Farmers and Regulators Join Forces to Limit Pesticide Drift in Central Valley

Nearly 250 Central Valley farmers and farmworkers converged on the Fresno County fairgrounds today to participate in Spray Safe, a stewardship program that promotes effective prevention of accidental pesticide drift from fields, the Western Plant Health Association announced today.

Joined by prominent elected officials and high-ranking regulators, participants received training in how to calibrate their equipment, properly use respirators, deal with hazardous materials and protect such pollinators as bees. It also focused on making sure all involved in pesticide applications are effectively communicating and working in concert, said Spray Safe officials.

“Spray Safe reinforces California’s current pesticide regulations and requirements, which are already some of the toughest limits in the world,” said Renee Pinel, the President & CEO of the Western Plant Health Association, which was a sponsor of the event. “More importantly, the program focuses on how to improve communication among all those involved in the pesticide application process.”

There are many steps and entities involved in any pesticide application, she said.

“We don’t need more regulations, we just need to make sure farmers, farmworkers and regulators are all effectively communicating with one another to ensure those regulations are being followed,” said Pinel.

“The best thing about the Spray Safe program is that it empowers thousands of workers to speak out if they have any concerns about a pesticide,” said Hernan Hernandez, the Executive Director of the California Farmworker Foundation, a Delano-based organization dedicated to creating a better future for the state’s farmworkers. “Farmworkers need to know what to do in an emergency. It speaks volumes that today’s event was conducted in both Spanish and English.”

The event drew a number of high-ranking officials and representatives, including

California, State Senator Melissa Hurtado (D-Sanger); Michael Stoker, Administrator, EPA Region 9; Jesse Cuevas Chief Deputy Director of the California Department of Pesticide Regulation, as well as County Agricultural Commissioners.

“California has the nation’s strictest pesticide regulations, but it remains DPR’s highest priority to make sure all Californians are aware of the rules and are protected from potential harm,” said Jesse Cuevas Chief Deputy Director of DPR. “It is a very positive sign that the agricultural community is coming together to encourage the safe application of pesticides through education and improved communications to make sure our communities are protected.”

Today’s event is one of many such Spray Safe classes conducted over the years.

“Programs like Spray Safe have trained thousands of people,” said Bill Hume, with Simplot Grower Solutions who helped lead the worker safety classes. “We always want to make sure we continue to keep farmers and farmworkers up to date on the latest technology, regulations and best practices.”

A second Spray Safe event is scheduled for January 16 at the Tulare-Kings International Agri-Center in Tulare.

The year 2020 marks both the 100th birthday of Dr. Parker and the 125th anniversary of the discovery of chiropractic. The school hopes to celebrate by showcasing a modern, rebuilt facility.

This collaboration has helped develop concussion specialists in the fields of athletic training, occupational therapy, and physical therapy.

Since its launch, the Master of Health Science offering has expanded from the ImPACT Trained Athletic Trainer (ITAT) credential to the ImPACT Trained Occupational Therapist (ITOT) and ImPACT Trained Physical Therapist (ITPT) credentials.

“Seeing the evolution of our collaboration with the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences is a sign that we are heading in the right direction,” said Michael Wahlster, ImPACT Applications’ Chief Executive Officer. “They are pioneering the expansion of concussion knowledge in higher education by providing future athletic trainers, physical therapists, and occupational therapists specialized training.”

The decision to add additional ImPACT Applications’ credential offerings stems from the need for multidisciplinary concussion care teams. Under this model, students learn the various roles needed to improve their patients’ outcomes while making objective rehabilitation and return to activity decisions.

This model encourages clinicians to work together instead of relying on one healthcare provider to make treatment and rehab decisions. Through collaboration, students learn how to work together to provide comprehensive concussion care.

This fall, Dr. Johanna Hurtubise, a leading concussion expert from Canada, will instruct the evidence-based Concussion Management course that is shared across post-professional programs at the University. “My research focuses on the neural control of movement following concussion,” said Dr. Hurtubise. “Specifically, my research is interested in cognitive-motor integration performance following a concussive incident. I’m excited to teach this course at the University of St. Augustine.”

The University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences is an emerging leader of comprehensive health sciences education. Part of that leadership is the incorporation of industry-relevant certificates and CEUs into the coursework that benefit both the student and the employer. Dr. Jordan Utley who championed introduction of the ImPACT Trained credential program shared that “students who take the course will wear the ITAT, ITPT or ITOT credential behind their name, which employers recognize – the proven way of preparing our students to lead in healthcare.” The ImPact credetial can be earned by taking the IPE7255 Evidence-based Concussion Management course.
