Improving Patient Adherence and Outcome Measurement with Game Design, Upcoming Webinar Hosted by Xtalks

Xtalks Life Science Webinars

Games can improve knowledge about health-related behaviours, and encourage participation in treatment programs and clinical trials.

In a live webinar taking place on Thursday, February 20, 2020 at 11am EST (4pm GMT/UK) attendees will be invited to obtain first-hand experience of gamified healthcare technology in the context of Alzheimer’s disease, especially regarding its early assessment. The featured speakers will present the Sea Hero Quest project, a video game that enabled data collection from over 4 million people across the planet to help Alzheimer’s disease research.

Gamification is the application of typical elements of game design to encourage engagement with a product or service, making it more fun to use. In the healthcare industry, gamification can help collect quality data (e.g., cognitive markers) in a noninvasive manner as well as retain respondents for future evaluations. Games can improve knowledge about health-related behaviours, and encourage participation in treatment programs and clinical trials. Innovation in health assessment and monitoring (e.g., wearable devices, online surveys, etc.) with the daily use of portable digital devices such as tablets, smartphones and laptops in today’s population supports a favourable environment for gamification implementation in healthcare systems.

Participants will learn about:

  • How traditional experience, quality and outcome measurements with questionnaires can be gamified in engaging and fun experiences using playful interactions and Chabot technologies
  • New insights into the opportunities that a gamified approach offers for exploratory analyses of data collected using digital technology
  • A live example of how a cognitive assessment relevant for Alzheimer’s disease can be embedded in a game suitable to everyone
  • Biases inherent to gamification: how do we know that what we measure with games contains information beyond the mere familiarity with technology?

Join industry experts Michaël Acquadro, PhD, Associate Outcome Researcher, Patient Centred Outcomes at ICON plc and Antoine Coutrot, PhD, Researcher at the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), based at the Laboratoire des Sciences du Numérique de Nantes, France, for an informative discussion. A live Q&A with the audience will be included.

EBSCO Information Services’ Option Grid™ Releases Opioid Addiction Decision Aid

News Image

This decision aid is intended to support and encourage these conversations between a patient and their clinician, helping to determine the best course of treatment for the individual.

EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO), the leading provider of evidence-based clinical resource tools, has announced the availability of a new decision aid within its shared decision making product, Option Grid™. Opioid Addiction: Treatment Options presents several pharmacotherapeutic options to manage opioid addiction.

Opioid addiction is a chronic relapsing condition of continued opioid use despite problematic consequences for more than a year. According to the Centers for Disease Control, there are 192 drug overdose deaths every day and opioids are currently the main driver of these fatalities. The Opioid Addiction decision aid is intended to help facilitate conversations around medical treatment for those who are addicted to opioids and want to compare medical treatments. Treatment options include maintenance treatment with methadone, buprenorphine, or naltrexone, as well as opioid cessation with a methadone or buprenorphine taper.

Patient decision aids are tools to help achieve shared decision making by enabling patients to understand and compare their healthcare options in the context of their personal preferences and arrive at informed decisions. Option Grid decision aids are interactive and personalized, enabling a tailored presentation of healthcare options that are most relevant to the patient. EBSCO’s Option Grids are used by health systems, health plans and other patient-focused organizations to improve the quality and cost of care, as well as patient experience. They can be integrated into clinical EHR workflows as well as other digital platforms or accessed through the web by consumers directly.

Dr. Glyn Elwyn, BA MD MSc PhD, professor at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College and co-founder of Option Grid, says this new tool was developed in response to the increasing risks of opioid addiction. “More and more, clinicians are treating patients for opioid addiction; they require a tool to help patients determine the most appropriate path for treatment. This decision aid is intended to support and encourage these conversations between a patient and their clinician, helping to determine the best course of treatment for the individual.”

Bachata Will Take the Lead as Dance of the Year in 2020, Say Dance Experts at Arthur Murray International

Couple dancing the bachata in a nightclub setting

Bachata will take the lead as dance of the year in 2020, say dance experts at Arthur Murray International

“Arthur Murray Dance Studios from New York to California have told us that students come in asking to learn Bachata because they saw people dancing in a club or on YouTube and they want to learn,” said Tom Murdock, Vice President, Events and Promotions at Arthur Murray International.

At the start of a new year and a new decade, a survey of Arthur Murray Dance Studios points to Bachata as the most popular dance of 2020, with Salsa a close second. Bachata is not a new dance, but has grown in recent years from dance clubs to mainstream. Bachata is one of a family of Latin dances, including Salsa, Cha Cha and Merengue, that are danced to upbeat music with lots of “Latin rhythm” – that’s dance-speak for swinging hips.

Bachata originated in the countryside of the Dominican Republic, and combines movements and music from the Dominican Republic, Africa, and Europe. It can be danced closely, with partners holding each other in a close embrace, or fast, with dancers holding hands and maximizing their hip swivels. It’s a sexy dance and works well for couples who want to keep it simple, or for skilled dancers, who can add more complex moves.

“Arthur Murray Dance Studios from New York to California have told us that students come in asking to learn Bachata because they saw people dancing in a club or on YouTube and they want to learn,” said Tom Murdock, Vice President, Events and Promotions at Arthur Murray International. “Students love it, because they can master the basics easily and as their skills grow, they can add different things, like twirls, turns or dips.”

Arthur Murray Dance Studios are also getting a lot of requests for Salsa, a Latin dance that blends traditional Latin music and dance steps with a lot of turning actions. Salsa is a favorite because there are so many places to dance to Salsa, including parties and clubs. It’s also perfect on a crowded dance floor, because it can be moderated to take up relatively little space.

In addition to Bachata and Salsa, the Viennese Waltz has made a reappearance for wedding couples. One New Jersey studio said no less than seven couples preparing for their wedding in 2020 have asked for dances to songs that are best suited to the Viennese Waltz. None of the songs are classical, as the rhythm of the Viennese Waltz transcends all musical genres.

They seem an unlikely trio – Bachata, Salsa and Viennese Waltz – but walk into any Arthur Murray Dance Studio, anywhere in the world, and the teachers are ready for whatever their students want to master. That includes the Hustle, the Quickstep, Country Western, Argentine Tango, Nightclub Two Step or a Swing Trot. If someone can pronounce it, they can teach it.

As more people decide to put their phones down and have fun connecting with other people, dance studios are growing in popularity as much as Bachata! Many Arthur Murray Dance Studios around the world have special offers for beginners. And every Arthur Murray Dance Studio relies on a time-tested system to make learning to dance at any level fun. Arthur Murray Dance Studios can be found in 270 cities in 22 countries around the world. For more information, visit http://www.arthurmurray.com.

Canal Calem Periodontics Hosts Monthly Study Club in Moorestown, NJ for Dental Implant Specialists and Innovative Dental Professionals

The Periodontists and Staff at Canal Calem Periodontics, Serving Moorestown and Medford, NJ

Canal Calem Periodontics Hosts Pinnacle Study Club in Moorestown, NJ

I have the opportunity to bring in speakers from all over the country to lecture and present their philosophy.

Respected periodontists in Moorestown and Medford, NJ, Drs. Mario J. Canal and Ben Calem, recently hosted two study club events for their program, Pinnacle Dental Study Club, to provide continuing education to dental professionals. The two courses, “Cosmetic Dentistry Update: What, Where, When and How?” and “Decision Making in Prosthodontic Rehabilitation for Teeth and Implants,” featured highly experienced guest speakers and equipped attending dental professionals on how to improve care at their own practices.

“I have the opportunity to bring in speakers from all over the country to lecture and present their philosophy. We have all these specialties working together to provide the best comprehensive care for our patients,” says Dr. Calem. “The whole objective is a better patient experience and a better patient treatment outcome, and we have the opportunity to provide a higher quality of dental education.”

The first course, “Cosmetic Dentistry Update: What, Where, When and How?” featured speaker Dr. Michael Malone. Attendees learned about cosmetic dentistry including the best materials to use, where to use veneers or onlays versus crowns, when to use composite resin versus porcelain and how to design the materials for each case. The second course, “Decision Making in Prosthodontic Rehabilitation for Teeth and Implants” featured speaker Dr. Marco Brindis. Those attending learned the steps, materials, preparation and bonding skills necessary to restore dental implants and give patients a healthy, attractive smile again.

Drs. Canal and Calem offer implant solutions, including All-on-4® full mouth dental implants, at both their practice locations in Moorestown and Medford, NJ. Dental implants are often used to replace missing or failing teeth with a lifelike and long-term alternative. With the All-on-4 approach, the periodontists can restore a full arch of missing teeth with as few as four dental implants. Attached to these implants are a bridge or denture prosthesis that gives patients a full set of functional, attractive teeth. This procedure is revolutionary because it can be completed in just a single appointment. Patients receive many benefits from replacing missing teeth with dental implants, including:

  • Improved self confidence
  • Ability to eat without restriction
  • Enhanced speech
  • Prevention of jawbone deterioration
  • Stability of the teeth

Patients seeking comprehensive dental implant care, or fellow doctors interested in the Pinnacle Study Club, are encouraged to contact the Medford and Moorestown, NJ periodontists. By focusing on prevention and wellness, providing clear treatment plans, and designing welcoming spaces, we can improve health outcomes for our pets and create better working environments for our staff. We’re thrilled to open our doors and provide our members with a new standard of veterinary care.”

“We’re delighted to open our first Small Door practice in New York City’s West Village and provide local pet parents with access to best-in-class health care,” Florent Peyre, Small Door Co-founder and President. “At Small Door, we’re taking a unique approach to animal health that focuses on three main constituencies: our members, patients, and employees. By combining doctors trained at some of the world’s leading veterinary schools with state-of-the-art equipment and best-in-class technology, we’ve created a better experience from start to finish that we believe will also provide better health outcomes. We encourage pet parents to come visit our practice, say hello, and review our membership options.”
