Genedata and the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation Collaborate to Improve Patient Care in Crohn’s Disease

News Image

This collaboration is helping us accelerate our search for precision biomarkers to prognosticate disease course and to guide early and effective personalized treatment decisions in Crohn’s disease patients.

Genedata, the leading provider of enterprise software solutions for biopharmaceutical R&D, today announced the successful completion of a Data Science Services project in support of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s mission to advance precision medicines for Crohn’s disease and to improve patients’ quality of life. Researchers and clinicians collaborated with Genedata data scientists to integrate and analyze multi-omic and clinical data collected from large cohorts of patients with Crohn’s disease, to identify the most informative biomarkers that can be used to assess the risk to develop serious complications requiring surgery within five years after diagnosis. The combination of certain clinical parameters and specific ‘omic biomarkers has the potential to lead to significant improvement in Crohn’s disease patient care.

The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation, the leading non-profit organization focused on research and patient care in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) for over 50 years, serves as a hub for Crohn’s disease research with the largest collection of IBD patient data from institutions around the world. To achieve the goal of accelerating treatments and cures, the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation looked for a partner to leverage the multitude of longitudinal clinical and molecular data from different ’omic technologies from large Crohn’s disease cohorts. In choosing Genedata as its partner to integrate and analyze their vast collection of clinical and high-dimensional molecular data, the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation recognized the firm’s extensive domain expertise gleaned over more than 20 years, along with the benefits offered by its unique precision medicine software platform for translational and clinical research, Genedata Profiler®. The Genedata team of expert bioinformaticians leveraged these resources to deliver actionable results that could be used to develop a diagnostic product.

“Crohn’s disease is a chronic, often debilitating disease, for which there is currently no cure. Despite several treatment options, currently we lack predictive tests to determine the optimal treatment strategy early in the disease process, when the opportunity to improve outcomes is greatest. There is a significant unmet need to advance new diagnostic tools to enable precision medicine approaches and to optimize patient care according to the severity of the disease course,” said Andrés Hurtado-Lorenzo, Ph.D., Senior Director of Translational Research at the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation. “We decided to implement cutting-edge data analysis methods to integrate clinical and genomic data from patients, as a strategy to advance our biomarker research efforts. We are pleased to have found in Genedata a trusted and reliable partner who provided us with expert knowledge in big multi-omic data analysis. This collaboration is helping us accelerate our search for precision biomarkers to prognosticate disease course and to guide early and effective personalized treatment decisions in Crohn’s disease patients.”

Commenting on the successful completion of the recent project, the CEO of Genedata, Othmar Pfannes, Ph.D., said, “The volume and complexity of multi-omic data together with clinical data is growingly rapidly and is challenging to analyze. Our Data Science Services together with our Genedata Profiler platform is set up to address this challenge and to enable our partners to make data-informed decisions on a per-project basis without having to build their own data infrastructure or hire data scientists.” Dr. Pfannes continued, “We are proud that our expertise has been helpful to the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation.”

Fresh Tri Wins CDC Multi-Year Contract to Build Habit Practice into the Diabetes Prevention Program

Fresh Tri

“This collaboration with CDC’s Lifestyle Change Program has the potential to scale and impact millions of underserved people affected by prediabetes,” said Kyra Bobinet, MD, MPH, CEO and Founder of Fresh Tri.

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has awarded Fresh Tri™, a fast-growth neuroscience-based digital health company, a multi-year contract to leverage its mindset- and habit-formation technology to improve the success of the National Diabetes Prevention Program Lifestyle Change Program (LCP).

In collaboration with CDC and certain LCP partner sites, Fresh Tri will adapt its weight-loss-focused mobile app, also called Fresh Tri, and apply its neuroscience-based methodology to create a companion app for DPP LCP participants, particularly focused on better engaging underserved populations. The app will guide participants in turning the food and fitness behaviors promoted by the LCP curriculum into sustainable habits. The new version of Fresh Tri will also help LCP lifestyle coaches monitor and support LCP participants daily to further improve outcomes.

CDC selected the Fresh Tri app for adaptation based on the mobile app’s demonstrated ability to help users form healthy habits. Fresh Tri does this by training users in the Iterative Mindset™ — a practice-and-modify approach to habit change.

The scientific definition of a habit is a repeated behavior that requires no thought. In contrast, conventional goal-setting and tracking requires immense thought and can backfire by triggering the habenula, a brain area that perceives failure and then suppresses one’s motivation to try again. As a result, people quit trying.

Fresh Tri’s research on thousands of underserved people found that adopting the Iterative Mindset enabled them to persist in their efforts and maintain motivation while they found and adjusted the right new habits to fit their lives.

Using this approach in a recent study conducted with Walmart associates, Fresh Tri demonstrated statistically-significant (p < 0.001) weight loss, habit formation, and improvements in mindset, persistence, and resilience. Fresh Tri is customizable for other healthcare organizations to target patient behavior change, as well as for employers seeking to improve various types of health habits for their employees.

“This collaboration with CDC’s Lifestyle Change Program has the potential to scale and impact millions of underserved people affected by prediabetes,” said Kyra Bobinet, MD, MPH, CEO and Founder of Fresh Tri. “We are honored by this opportunity to spread this more natural, science-based approach to sustainable behavior change and to replace the outdated model of using goals and tracking that backfires for so many people.”

Fresh Tri uses a simple, positive approach based on the brain science of habit formation. In a recent study, use of the Fresh Tri app, in combination with mindset training, led to statistically significant weight loss and habit formation, as well as improvements in positive psychology metrics highly associated with overall health and well-being. More Than 500 Wichita-Area Youth Have Benefited from New, Life-Saving Psychiatric Treatment

News Image

“Our mission particularly focuses on keeping people first—ensuring that we’re providing the utmost treatment and care to all of our clients and families.” Juston White, KVC Hospitals Wichita Executive Director

Since opening in July 2019, more than 500 Wichita-area youth have benefited from life-saving psychiatric treatment. Some of the ways KVC has helped these children include teaching them how to identify and talk about their emotions, helping them develop skills for coping with stress and trauma, and providing resources that will support them long after they leave our treatment center. For an inside look at the new hospital and to hear from community partners, watch this video.

Here are some of the services available to children while in our care:

  • Family Therapy: Therapists work to improve communication, enhance a family’s ability to help their child, and provide a better understanding of mental health issues and behavioral concerns.
  • Individual Therapy: Our licensed therapists help each child identify and understand their interpersonal challenges and learn new skills to deal with stress.
  • Group Therapy: Our therapists work with a group of clients on improving social skills, enhancing coping skills and strengthening communication. This may take place in a traditional sense or using expressive therapies, such as art, music or recreation.
  • Medication Management: Each child is assessed by a licensed physician and medication will be prescribed, as needed, and with parental/guardian permission, to best provide for symptomatic improvement.
  • Family Education: Our treatment team provides parents/guardians with information and tools that will help them continue supporting their child once they leave our facility. For example, medication management, de-escalation techniques, cool-down procedures and emotion regulation.
  • Behavioral Education: Our pro-social behavior program is designed to promote responsibility and self-esteem, measure motivation and enhance positive choices.
  • Psycho-Educational and Group Activities: Trained behavioral health professionals implement activities such as anger management training, social skills development, empathy training, recreational exercise and much more.
  • Learning Labs: Youth participate in a variety of educational activities to help them better understand and strengthen their brains.

“Our mission particularly focuses on keeping people first—ensuring that we’re providing the utmost treatment and care to all of our clients and families,” said Juston White, KVC Hospitals Wichita, Executive Director. “It’s just a reality that many of us, youth and also adults, need additional support from time to time.”

See Shimmer Research Discuss How They are revolutionizing Clinical Trials with their Wearable Technology.

Worldwide Business with kathy ireland® is pleased to announce an exclusive interview with Shimmer Research President Geoffrey Gill to introduce their wearable sensors that help streamline clinical trials.

Shimmer Research has been a leading provider of wearable wireless sensor products and solutions since its foundation in 2008. As a pioneer in the industry, Shimmer is committed to pushing the boundaries and driving the future development of wearable wireless sensing. Headquartered in Dublin, Ireland with offices around the world, Shimmer provides customized sensor development services, volume manufacturing, and complete wearable sensor solutions of any complexity. Shimmer’s technology and services have been employed by thousands of researchers globally.

Verisense is the company’s latest platform that was designed from the ground up to meet the needs of clinical trials. The initial product in the Verisense line is a general-purpose motion sensor that can be used to study everything from activity and sleep to complex musculoskeletal or neurological conditions, such as dystonia, epilepsy, or Parkinson’s.

Gill says that Shimmer Research’s revolutionary wearable sensors can help streamline clinical trials in a big way. He explains, “With wearables, we’re able to monitor people in the clinical trials and measure objectively how they are doing. Are they limping more or less? Are they more active? Are they sleeping better? We can do this twenty-four-seven throughout the whole trial, so we get a much more accurate picture of how the patients are actually doing. That allows you to potentially reduce the number of people in the trial. Instead of three-thousand people, you might only need fifteen-hundred people. That cuts the cost of a trial in half. Plus, it makes it a lot faster because you don’t have to recruit as many people. So it can really change clinical trials.”

CCO Launches Decision Support Tool Application to Provide Expert- and Guideline-Recommended Treatment Across Medical Specialties

Outcomes results prove that using CCO decision support tools changes the intended treatment plan for many healthcare providers, suggesting the tools’ use can help optimize care of patients. – Dan Cox, CEO, CEA Holdings.

Clinical Care Options (CCO) announces the launch of an Interactive Decision Support Tool (IDST) mobile application (app) across medical specialties. IDSTs, in conjunction with traditional educational formats, offer a means to narrow the gap between clinical practice/guideline recommendations and individualized treatment decision-making.

IDSTs are authored by a panel of topic experts or based on consensus guidelines to address changing treatment paradigms and gaps in guideline specificity across a range of medical specialties. CCO’s IDSTs are developed to include hundreds to thousands of unique case variations based on factors considered important for treatment selection. To use the IDST, healthcare providers are prompted to enter patient-specific and disease-specific information from pull-down menus and then indicate their planned clinical approach for the patient case entered into the tool. After this information is entered, a single treatment recommendation is provided from each of the 5 experts and displayed for the specific case.

“Outcomes results prove that using CCO decision support tools changes the intended treatment plan for many healthcare providers, suggesting the tools’ use can help optimize care of patients,” said Dan Cox, CEO, CEA Holdings. “This IDST app is the logical next step to provide an accessible, readily usable format of these critical tools to healthcare providers worldwide.”

CCO’s IDST app is available for free on iOS and Android platforms:

Texas ASC Society To Hold Annual Conference Next Month

The Texas Ambulatory Surgery Center Society (TASCS) is holding its annual conference in San Antonio, Texas, February 28-29, 2020.

TASCS is the only organization dedicated to the representation of Texas ambulatory surgery centers (ASC), modern healthcare facilities that provide for patients in the most economical and efficient ways.

“We provide legislative and regulatory advocacy and valuable resources that allow Texas surgery centers to stay competitive,” says Krista DuRapau, executive director of TASCS. “With our conference each year, we are able to provide further education and support, so that more people know about and turn to these centers.”

Lectures this year will include keynote speaker William Prentice, chief executive officer of the Ambulatory Surgery Center Association. Prentice will discuss the new federally adopted payment rule for ASCs, the new procedures added to the ASC payable list and federal legislation being debated currently in Washington, D.C.

Attendees will also be able to learn more on topics such as CMS burden reductions and patient safety, as well as trends and updates within the growing industry.

In conjunction with the annual conference, TASCS’ Political Action Committee will hold a reception on Friday evening, in order to elevate the importance of advocacy awareness. A special guest, Representative Steve Allison of the Texas House, will be in attendance.

“Having an elected official be able to attend such an event offers TASCS and its members the opportunity to educate our lawmakers about ASCs and the impact that these facilities have in reducing healthcare costs in Texas,” says DuRapau.

TASCS also uses the annual conference to recognize and present awards to individuals, organizations and businesses that have stood out in the past year and that have contributed to the advancement of ASCs in general. Highlights of the awards that will be presented are:

  • ASC Patient Advocate Award (presented to a person who has taken initiative above and beyond to help improve patient care in the ASC setting)
  • Vendor of the Year Award (presented to a vendor who has made positive changes in the ASC industry)
  • Rising Star Award (presented to an individual that works in an ASC and has shown significant growth in the ASC industry)
  • ASC Innovations Award (presented to a facility that has taken strides to create new and innovative programs within their facility)

“This field is expanding,” says DuRapau, “and our conference is a way for everyone to come together for a weekend of even more growth. We can’t wait for all the networking, collaborating and learning!”
