The technology improves care for Intensive Care Unit patients, as developing effusion and the need for immediate drainage (as one of many examples) can be more effectively assessed with the apparatus. This device quantifies angulation of a patient, which provides reproducible and accurate results, which therefore provide for a better comparison of day-to-day improvement. This enhanced accuracy allows for better analysis and diagnosis.

For example, effusions appear differently with variations in the patient’s inclination. This makes effusions difficult to evaluate on serial exams. This can lead to an inaccurate diagnosis, potentially causing harm to the patient.

Dr. Beverly Mock, Ph.D., is a senior investigator with the NCI, where she has focused her research on complex genetic traits associated with cancer initiation and progression in an effort to develop strategies for identifying and analyzing drug combinations to target susceptibility pathways.

This One Million Solutions in Health webinar introduces a ground-breaking small molecule that can be used as a potential therapeutic for multiple myeloma, carcinoma of the cervix, colon, breast, lung and stomach.

The proto-oncogene c-Myc is deregulated and overexpressed in ~70% of all cancers. Thus, c-Myc is an attractive therapeutic target, since disrupting c-Myc activity could be used as pan-chemotherapy.

Beyond cancer, Myc is also a positive effector of tissue inflammation, and its function has been implicated in the pathophysiology of heart failure.

Because c-Myc is a transcription factor, a rationally designed small molecule targeting c-Myc is required to exhibit significant specificity. Unfortunatly, several physical characteristics of Myc make it a very difficult protein to target and, to date, there are no approved drugs targeting c-Myc.

The invention being discussed in this One Million Solutions in Health webinar is directed to small molecules that stabilize the transcription repressing quadruplex in the c-Myc gene promoter region. The compounds available for licensing target c-Myc at the transcriptional level, and have been shown to inhibit c-Myc expression.

CAMRT Alarmed at Ontario Government Decision to Axe Key Funding Program

The Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) is urging the Ontario Government to reconsider its decision to shut down the Allied Health Professional Development Fund. The fund has helped allied health professionals in Ontario, including thousands of medical radiation technologists (MRTs) working across the province, to access essential continuing professional development opportunities.

The Ontario Association of Medical Radiation Sciences (OAMRS) led by Greg Toffner, CEO, has been working tirelessly to convince the Ontario Government to continue this important funding. The CAMRT fully supports the position taken by OAMRS. We urge the Ontario Government to collaborate with OAMRS and reconsider their decision to withdraw funding for this program for the good of all Ontarians.

Ontario’s Health Minister, Christine Elliott, claims that the government’s rationale for terminating the program is that the Ontario Government is now focusing as much funding as possible on “front line patient care”.

“Continuing professional development is by no means a luxury; it is essential to ensuring that healthcare professionals are up-to-date with new research, best practices, technological advances, safety protocols and other developments in their field of practice,” said Irving Gold, CAMRT’s CEO. “The importance of these educational offerings is reflected in the fact that CMRITO, the regulatory authority for Ontario’s MRTs with the mandate of protecting the public, requires 25 hours a year in order to maintain certification.”

“It is unclear to me how the Ontario government is defining front-line care, but MRTs do indeed provide front-line care to millions of Ontarians each year,” said Gailyne MacPherson, CAMRT President. “Removing funding for continuing education for a profession that operates in such a rapidly changing technological environment. This decision will ultimately undermine the government’s desire to focus on improved patient care.”

OAMRS is currently meeting with non-cabinet MPPs of the PC Caucus who are most likely to pressure the Minister to review the decision. Ten meetings have been scheduled to date.

Castro serves as a NVM Manufacturer Representative on the ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 188 – Legionellosis: Risk Management for Building Water Systems. He is a voting member of NSF’s Protocol P376 for evaluation of Mechanical Water Filtration Systems for the Reduction of Bacteria and Fungi for Handwashing and Showering in Health Care Settings, Technical Advisor to the California Department of Public Health Healthcare-Associated Infections Advisory Committee, Environmental Cleaning in Healthcare Subcommittee. He was also a member of the Legionella Task Group for The International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials’ (IAPMO) to work towards developing new plumbing standards that balance risk of scalding and Legionella.

The superstar girl band Girl Pow-R has joined forces with One Million Solutions in Health to build resilience with the #iMatter Program. The #iMatter Program seeks to provide young people with skills to build their confidence, strength and resilience. It is a charity-driven educational workshop that will be delivered across North America.

Sponsors, educators and interested organizations and individuals can bring Girl Pow-R into their organization to deliver a workshop to young people that will expose them to a number of skills that are essential to all of us. It is essential that we each show the world that we matter and we have the tools to stand up to bad behavior from others. One of the unspoken goals of the #iMatter Program is to remove the word ‘bullying’ from our language and to replace it with a more positive and inspiring statement: #iMatter.

The #iMatter Movement emanates from the principles incorporated in the Girl Pow-R training. The Girl Pow-R program aims to provide musical training to girls in various North American cities, including singing lessons, dance classes, and performance training. While having fun and making new friends, the girls are taught to be confident in their own voices. They perform on stage, overcoming performance fright as a group, and are given the opportunity to make themselves heard, whether it’s introducing songs to audiences, or speaking at events about social causes dear to them.

Through One Million Solutions in Health, a charitable 501(c)(3) organization, the #iMatter Program builds on these principles and aims to give young people an opportunity to expand their comfort zone while remaining in a safe environment.

Girl Pow-R was formed on International Women’s Day 2017 in conjunction with the #BeBoldForChange initiative, and the group of singers, songwriters, multi-instrumentalists, and dancers have grown more popular with each passing year.

Since starting, Girl Pow-R have won a Family Channel singing competition, as well as nominations for Niagara Music Awards’ ‘Best New Group’ and a Toronto Independent Music Award. And, they performed more than 200 shows in just over two and a half years. They are signed to Canyon Entertainment Group, an artist management company and independent record label.

Girl Pow-R is also excited to be among the first-ever group of young people, or children, to be nominated for a Juno award in the Children’s Category for Album of the Year. It is a history-making moment! This follows a lot of terrific “music and television” experiences that the group has had like performing on YTV The Zone three times, and performing on TVO Kids. Girl Pow-R was on eTalk Canada, and were hand-picked to re-create the Mysticons theme song, and create the choreography and star in two music videos for the Mysticons.
