Same-Day Dental Implants in Berkeley, CA, Made Possible by Dr. Keith Chertok and Straumann®

Dr. Keith Chertok, Periodontist in Berkeley, CA

Dr. Keith Chertok, Periodontist in Berkeley, CA, Makes Same-Day Dental Implants Possible for More Patients

This new system cuts out five months of healing time for patients, significantly improving the patient experience and offering lasting results.

An early adopter of cutting-edge techniques and technology, Dr. Keith Chertok now offers the new BLX immediate dental implant system by Straumann®. Combining the expertise of a periodontist with this modern technology, patients in and around Berkeley, CA are able to have a tooth extracted and a dental implant placed in the same visit. This decreases treatment time and significantly shortens the time without a complete, functional, and healthy smile.

Straumann is one of the leading dental implant manufacturers in the world. Their new BLX implant system opens the door for more patients to receive immediate dental implants and restore their smiles in just one day.

Dental implants are the only long-term tooth replacement solution that restores jawbone health, nearly 100 percent oral function, as well as natural-looking aesthetics. Traditionally, a tooth is extracted leaving a large hole or socket in the jawbone where the tooth root used to be. In order to restore a firm and healthy foundation, this area must be rebuilt by filling it with bone grafting material. Five or more months are typically required for the treatment site to heal before a dental implant can be successfully placed.

However, with revolutionary dental implant posts designed by Straumann, dental implant specialists and periodontists like Dr. Chertok are able to qualify even more patients for immediate solutions. This technology eliminates the need for a healing period by creating a dental implant that engages with the bone in the socket immediately after the tooth is removed. In many cases, this also makes immediate load dental implants possible, allowing patients to receive a temporary restoration and a complete smile the same day as their surgery.

Each dental implant uses technologies backed by long-term scientific evidence. Trusted by Dr. Chertok and other leaders in the field of Implantology, he is excited to implement this implant system into his practice. Dr. Chertok says, “This new system cuts out five months of healing time for patients, significantly improving the patient experience and offering lasting results.”

Dr. Chertok has been offering dental implants at his practice in Berkeley, CA since 1995. He and his specialized team welcome patients in need of single dental implants, full mouth dental implants and everything in between. To learn more about the new dental implant system Dr. Chertok has implemented at his periodontal practice or to find out if you qualify for immediate dental implants, call 510-548-0150.

NeoTract Designates Dr. Saleem Zafar as UroLift® Center of Excellence

News Image

“Dr. Saleem Zafar has earned the UroLift Center of Excellence designation for his dedication to improving the lives of men who previously suffered from BPH symptoms and delivering superior patient outcomes with the UroLift System treatment,” said Dave Amerson

NeoTract, a wholly owned subsidiary of Teleflex Incorporated (NYSE:TFX) focused on addressing unmet needs in the field of urology, today announced that Saleem Zafar, M.D., RoMIUS Urology in Toledo, OH, has been designated as a UroLift® Center of Excellence. The designation recognizes that Dr. Zafar has achieved a high level of training and experience with the UroLift® System and demonstrated a commitment to exemplary care for men suffering from symptoms associated with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), also known as enlarged prostate.

Recommended for the treatment of BPH in both the American Urological Association and European Association of Urology clinical guidelines, the FDA-cleared Prostatic Urethral Lift procedure using the UroLift System is a proven, minimally invasive technology for treating lower urinary tract symptoms due to BPH. The UroLift permanent implants, delivered during a transurethral outpatient procedure, relieve prostate obstruction and open the urethra directly without cutting, heating, or removing prostate tissue.

The UroLift Center of Excellence program is designed to highlight urologists who are committed to educating their patients on BPH and the UroLift System as a treatment option and consistently seek to deliver excellent patient outcomes and experiences.

“Dr. Saleem Zafar has earned the UroLift Center of Excellence designation for his dedication to improving the lives of men who previously suffered from BPH symptoms and delivering superior patient outcomes with the UroLift System treatment,” said Dave Amerson, president of the Teleflex Interventional Urology business unit.

Over 40 million men in the United States are affected by BPH, a condition that occurs when the prostate gland that surrounds the male urethra becomes enlarged with advancing age and begins to obstruct the urinary system. Symptoms of BPH often include interrupted sleep and urinary problems and can cause loss of productivity, depression and decreased quality of life.

Medication is often the first-line therapy for enlarged prostate, but relief can be inadequate and temporary. Side effects of medication treatment can include sexual dysfunction, dizziness and headaches, prompting many patients to quit using the drugs. For these patients, the classic alternative is surgery that cuts, heats or removes prostate tissue to open the blocked urethra. While current surgical options can be very effective in relieving symptoms, they can also leave patients with permanent side effects such as urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and retrograde ejaculation.

About the UroLift® System

The FDA-cleared UroLift System is a proven, minimally invasive technology for treating lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The UroLift permanent implants, delivered during a minimally invasive transurethral outpatient procedure, relieve prostate obstruction and open the urethra directly without cutting, heating, or removing prostate tissue. Clinical data from a pivotal 206-patient randomized controlled study showed that patients with enlarged prostate receiving UroLift implants reported rapid and durable symptomatic and urinary flow rate improvement without compromising sexual function*1,2. Patients also experienced a significant improvement in quality of life. Over 100,000 men have been treated with the UroLift System in the U.S. Most common adverse events reported include hematuria, dysuria, micturition urgency, pelvic pain, and urge incontinence. Most symptoms were mild to moderate in severity and resolved within two to four weeks after the procedure. The Prostatic Urethral Lift procedure using the UroLift System is recommended for the treatment of BPH in both the American Urological Association and European Association of Urology clinical guidelines. The UroLift System is available in the U.S., Europe, Australia, Canada, Mexico and South Korea. Learn more at http://www.UroLift.com.

Juniper Communities takes proactive approach to testing residents and staff for COVID-19 to limit illness and deaths in seniors housing communities

Juniper Communities, a national owner-operator of seniors housing communities announced it will begin full testing of consenting residents and associates in its communities as a proactive measure to further protect chronically ill older adults from the effects of COVID-19. Testing has begun as of April 2, 2020 and will be completed across most Juniper communities as quickly as possible.

“We care for the most frail and susceptible population. Senior living communities are the first line of defense for 3 million citizens most at risk for complications and even death from this virus. They and their families rely on senior living to keep them healthy and safe,” said Lynne Katzmann, Juniper’s CEO and founder. Staff wellbeing is also a primary concern. “Our associates come to work every day dedicated to providing care to the residents, and we want to minimize the risk to them and those they care for.”

The CDC released information yesterday indicating that the virus has graver impact on older adults with the chronic conditions typically found in seniors’ housing residents. The data suggest 8 out of 10 deaths reported in the U.S. have been in adults 65 and older. More concerning to senior living, 31-70% of COVID-19-positive patients aged 85+ require hospitalization, while people ages 65-84 are also at risk of needing hospital care (31-59% of this age group). Senior living communities focus primarily on these at-risk ages. Katzmann stated, “Hospitals are clearly reaching their capacity. We hope to do our part with this initiative to flatten the curve and prevent new infections with full testing across our communities in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Colorado.”

Katzmann said the company’s testing initiative is based on the need to have actionable data to build a comprehensive and proactive plan. She noted Juniper has procured the tests through private/commercial vendors using CDC-qualified reagents and operating under the FDA’s Emergency Use Authorization. “We are not taking needed tests away from state health organizations, medical providers, or hospitals,” Katzmann continued. “The opening of the pipeline by the FDA is making greater testing available to everyone.”

Test results will be used to confirm symptomatic individuals for isolation, identify asymptomatic individuals for segregation, and change staffing patterns to further limit cross-contamination. “For the time being we need to dramatically reduce the number of individuals who interface daily while maintaining our high levels of care. Testing data is absolutely critical for us to put additional precautions in place—ones which appear to have had success in other countries,” Katzmann commented.

The true rate of infection within senior living communities is unknown across staff members and residents, so Juniper has made the decision to test residents and staff at their communities. Juniper believes this critical missing data point is the tool that will enable them to make decisions as to how to better manage the disease in their communities.

Juniper has been following guidelines and recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services (CMS) and the public health regulatory agencies for each state in which they operate. The precautions include but are not limited to: limiting access to communities to essential visitors only, screening and temperature monitoring of staff and essential visitors, enhanced infection control and cleaning procedures, social distancing and self-isolation, and in-room dining service only. Juniper monitors guidelines daily and updates practices as new information becomes available.

Juniper Communities has long been recognized as an innovator, finding solutions from outside the industry to tackle problems such as energy efficiency, purpose in life, and reducing social isolation and loneliness in elders. “We’ve successfully cared for residents through natural disasters such as Hurricane Irma without loss of life. This is the greatest challenge we have ever faced. Full testing is clearly the correct next step.” said Katzmann.

Nasal swab tests were ordered in sufficient number to test community members—residents and associates. Working in conjunction with community’s primary care providers, appropriate prescriptions were received prior to ordering of tests.

Juniper recognizes this approach has limitations. While the test is not 100% accurate, even a 70 to 80% accuracy rate should improve outcomes. There will be need for ongoing testing and surveillance, particularly with staff who go out into the wider community after their shifts.

According to Katzmann, “While we cannot predict the outcome of this pandemic, it is our hope that by extending our precautions beyond what is required we can limit exposure in our communities and continue to care for everyone at the high standard we have always maintained.”

Telemental Health Company Partners with Veteran Caregivers During COVID-19 Pandemic

MyAdvisor, a holistic wellness technology company powered by Three Wire Systems, LLC (Three Wire), is uniting with the Yellow Ribbon Fund (YRF) to offer mental health and care coordination services to over 1,500 veteran caregivers that work with the organization. By continuing an ongoing partnership to launch a new initiative throughout the global COVID-19 pandemic, MyAdvisor and YRF hope to help alleviate the mental health burdens faced by veteran caregivers during this time.

Three Wire first began serving military personnel and veterans in 2007 when the veteran-owned business began VetAdvisor, a program that provides comprehensive wellness solutions that protect, support and advocate for our nation’s heroes. In 2019, it expanded its offerings to private sector employees to provide wellness, career development, financial literacy and navigational advocacy support. Additionally, as an American Association of Suicidology (AAS) Certified crisis center, care coordinators are trained to identify crisis situations and take the appropriate steps to assess and triage services for individuals.

In the past year, the company has over doubled in growth, employing more than 200 representatives who answer more than 40,000 calls a month out of its coordinated care facilities in Pennsylvania.

YRF is a veteran service organization. Headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, YRF provides housing and transportation to severely wounded, ill and injured post-9/11 service members from every branch of the U.S. military. YRF also provides family and caregiver support services in 12 other locations throughout the US. MyAdvisor’s president, Jennifer Christman, serves on YRF’s board and in December, Three Wire sponsored the “Country Music Writer Showcase,” which raised more than $38,000 in one event to support wounded, ill and injured Veterans and their families.

“At MyAdvisor, we’ve designed technology solutions to make it easier for individuals to access and utilize care coordination,” said Christman. “No-barrier access to care is especially vital in the wake of the novel coronavirus, which can cause an undue strain on the population’s mental health. While we started out serving uniformed personnel, we’re on a mission to reach all in need of our services across the country.”

New Coronavirus Risk Assessment Toolkit Released to the Public

Coronavirus Risk Map of United States

In creating the Coronavirus Risk Assessment Toolkit (CRAT), the data team at BestPlaces assembled statistics for a variety of health resources and risk factors that can be used in forecasting models, geographic information systems (GIS) or spreadsheets.

BestPlaces.net, a small firm in Portland Oregon, has released several data sets to help health professionals and policymakers gain insights into how severely COVID-19 might impact counties, metro areas, and states. BestPlaces has amassed an unparalleled collection of data on every city, town, state, metro area, county, and zip code in the U.S. and is sharing their work to fight the Coronavirus.

In creating the Coronavirus Risk Assessment Toolkit (CRAT), the data team at BestPlaces assembled statistics for a variety of health resources and risk factors that can be used in forecasting models, geographic information systems (GIS) or spreadsheets. The CRAT seamlessly covers the entire United States, with comparable data on all 51 states, 383 metropolitan areas, 3143 counties, and a special table focused on rural counties.

Anyone can view the data set online and copy the data for their own analysis.

Here are the metrics of the Toolkit, which have been identified by the health community as key resources or risk factors affecting the impact of the Coronavirus:

  • Population
  • Hospitals
  • Hospital beds
  • ICU beds
  • Percent of population over 65 years
  • Percent of population over 80 years
  • Percent of population with poor or fair health
  • Percent of population with diabetes
  • Percent of population over with obesity
  • Population density

One important feature of the CRAT is the inclusion of metropolitan area data. Other data sets have been at the state or county level but this also aggregates data at the metro area. This is significant because even if there are no hospitals or ICU beds in some of the smaller counties of a metro area, its health resources are commonly available to all residents of the metro.

Each of the geographies is coded with standard Census FIPS codes so the data can easily be combined with other datasets or visualized with any GIS application. Counties which are part of the 383 U.S. metropolitan areas are tagged with the name and code of its metro area, relating it to the Metro Area table.

This is a valuable resource for a variety of groups:

  • National health officials can use it to identify potential hot spots before they flare up.
  • State and local health officials can compare their locale against areas of known infection, to assess the possible future impact on their region.
  • Policymakers and politicians can gain insights from the statistics which can help them gain better insights into the magnitude of the impact.
  • The media can use the data for stories about the resources available in their area, how local risk factors compare with the rest of the state and nation, and helping to power data-driven journalism.
  • The public is able to do their own assessment, perhaps finding some of their own answers to questions that have been raised by recent waves of Coronavirus news.

No Risk Index?

One thing that the BestPlaces team is not doing is taking the final step of creating a Coronavirus Risk Index. To do that, they would assign a level of weighting to each of the risk factors, and this is best done by health experts and scientists. Assigning a Risk Index for a particular place may have serious repercussions. A high Risk Index for a county or city could lead to increased fear and anxiety, and a low Risk Index may give a false sense of security. Accordingly, BestPlaces will leave this calculation of a Risk Index in the hands of the scientific community and policymakers.

However, BestPlaces has used their expertise in ranking and comparing places to create an additional risk assessment scoring model. In the BestPlaces scoring model, the Coronavirus data has been normalized across the categories to create a set of indexes, and each metric can be assigned a level of importance (weighting). BestPlaces is making this model available to any group to aid in their work to combat the Coronavirus. Requests for the scoring model may be sent to “crat@bestplaces.net” with “Scoring model” in the subject, and include the name of the organization in the message.

For interviews or follow-up questions email crat@bestplaces.net or call 503-777-1636.

About BestPlaces

For over 35 years, BestPlaces has focused on helping people find their own best place to live. On their Bestplaces.net web site, millions of monthly visitors research, compare and rank every city, town and zip code in the United States.

With its unparalleled collection of data sets about the United States, BestPlaces is excited to use its resources in the fight against the Coronavirus. By releasing its data toolkit to the public, it hopes that it will aid health experts and policy officials in preparation for the coming storm.

Unprecedented Demand for Travel Nurses Experienced at American Traveler

“It is awe inspiring to see the bravery and dedication of the healthcare professionals who are willing to put themselves on the front lines of this crisis. Our admiration for their work knows no bounds.

As COVID-19 continues to spread across the country, the burden on hospitals and healthcare workers has increased exponentially. Hospitals are dealing with patient populations that far exceed their usual capacity and permanent staff nurses urgently need support.

Travel nurses, so-named because they “travel” from location to location, fill short- and long-term staffing needs at hospitals across the U.S. Travel nursing agencies, like American Traveler, provide much-needed supplemental staffing when core staff levels need support. In this time of inundation of the healthcare system, hospitals have an advantage when they staff through a travel nursing agency. Nurse staffing agencies locate nurses around the country, verify their credentials, match them with facilities in need, and assist them with pre-employment requirements. This prescreening and credentialing support means nurses can hit the ground running in hospitals that desperately need nurses on the floor.

There is unprecedented demand for travel nurses all across the country during this crisis. At American Traveler, requests for travel nurse staffing in March have increased 50% over the previous month, and nearly 80% from the same time last year. Currently, California, Florida, New York, and Washington state have the highest need for travelers. Among the nursing specialties in highest demand are Critical Care, ER, and Med/Surg. Due to the pulmonary complications associated with the Novel Coronavirus, hospitals are also in pressing need of Respiratory Therapists.

While the demand for nursing staff is skyrocketing, so is the willingness of healthcare clinicians to participate in the relief efforts. The number of healthcare professionals who have expressed interest in travel nursing in March has risen 100% from the previous month, and 75% versus last March, and it shows no sign of slowing.

Says Mary Kay Hull, Vice President of Recruitment at American Traveler, “It is awe inspiring to see the bravery and dedication of the healthcare professionals who are willing to put themselves on the front lines of this crisis. Our admiration for their work knows no bounds.”

Many positions are posting with crisis response rates – higher-than-normal hourly rates. Because of the staffing shortage and the highly risky nature of the work, weekly pay has increased 300% for many assignments.

Stability in a Time of Crisis

With a situation that is changing minute to minute, needs continue to flow into American Traveler and these critical areas continue to fluctuate. American Traveler is also navigating the evolving restrictions and requirements emerging as hospitals, counties, states, and the country as a whole grapple with their response to COVID-19. American Traveler is deeply grateful for the tireless efforts of nurses and other healthcare workers across the country, especially in the face of this global health crisis.

About American Traveler

American Traveler is a travel nursing agency that staffs healthcare professionals at more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide including over 80% of the largest hospital systems in the United States. American Traveler is a preferred staffing source for registered nurses, technologists, occupational therapists and physical therapists. The company has continuously demonstrated the quality of its healthcare staffing services by earning the Joint Commission’s prestigious Gold Seal of Approval since 2005.

Small Business Scores Big Win with FinalWipe

News Image

In the midst of challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic, Final, a small female-led company sought a relevant, mission-based solution to declining sales. The team found hope for the future as they launched a new product called FinalWipe—a multipurpose reusable wipe made from soft, highly absorbent, antimicrobial material.

At a time when sanitation and limited resources are a concern, Final was inspired to find a solution for the future. The team decided it was the right moment to pivot and find a way to make a difference.

Final launched FinalWipe on Kickstarter on March 31 and gained immediate traction. The project was fully funded, at $50,000, in less than eight hours. It went on to raise an additional $30,000, for a total of $80,000, by the end of the first day.

“As we watched this global crisis unfold, I turned to my team to find a solution that would resonate with the community and also stay true to our mission as a company, ” said Emma Rose Cohen, CEO and Founder of Final. “FinalWipe is a product that was born in response to current issues and will have a place in the sustainable world for years to come.”

Final has several additional products slated for release in 2020.
