Addressing & Surmounting Complexities in Clinical Development, Upcoming Webinar Hosted by Xtalks

Xtalks Life Science Webinar

Clinical trial design is a critical factor that can make or break success. Careful foresight in initial stages can impact data quality and trial duration.

Join the live webinar with featured speaker Deb Kientop, MBA, Vice President, Oncology Development at Synteract on Monday, April 27, 2020 at 11am EDT (4pm BST/UK).

Targeted therapies are currently the focus of much anti-cancer drug development. They are a cornerstone of precision medicine, using information about a person’s genes and proteins to prevent, diagnose and treat disease. While these therapies show great promise, they are also very complex. These immuno-oncology and cytostatic treatments often require different assumptions and factors to be tested compared to traditional, early safety-based trials for cytotoxic agents. Clinical trial design is a critical factor that can make or break success. Careful foresight in initial stages can impact data quality and trial duration.

This webinar will address leading therapies in novel oncology trials. It will provide an in-depth perspective on what drug developers can do to find the right patients. It will offer insights into just how important biomarkers and companion diagnostics may be in targeted therapy clinical trials.

Attendees will gain important insights from experts developing some of the most innovative oncology clinical trials today.

World Gastroenterology Organisation Announces World Digestive Health Day 2020 Gut Microbiome: A Global Perspective

News Image

By increasing awareness worldwide of the role that the gut microbiome may have in diagnosis, and how it can be modulated to treat disease and allay symptoms, we can affect overall human health and, in particular, among low- and middle-income countries.

The human gut microbiome contains tens of trillions of microorganisms and over 1,000 known species of bacteria, which have many important functions within the human body. Not surprisingly, there has been considerable interest and even more speculation on the role that gut microorganisms might play in health and disease. Gastroenterologists are frequently called upon to interpret, on behalf of their patients, the latest findings from basic and clinical research. To help sift through and assess the vast, complex, at times confusing, and ever-increasing body of literature and provide some guidance to the practicing clinician and their patients, the World Gastroenterology Organisation selected the Gut Microbiome as the focus of the 15th Annual 2020 World Digestive Health Day (WDHD), celebrated all year long, but highlighted on May 29th.

World Digestive Health Day focuses yearly upon a particular digestive disease or disorder to increase public awareness of the prevention, prevalence, diagnosis, management, and treatment of the disease or disorder worldwide. By increasing awareness worldwide of the role that the gut microbiome may have in diagnosis, and how it can be modulated to treat disease and allay symptoms, we can affect overall human health and, in particular, among low- and middle-income countries.

The WGO global network of member societies, partners, and sponsors is ideally positioned to raise awareness of the role the gut microbiome in human health. WGO invites those who are interested in joining the World Digestive Health Day 2020 initiative to visit http://www.worldgastroenterology.org/wgo-foundation/wdhd/wdhd-2020, or Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram @WorldGastroOrg.

ABOUT THE WORLD GASTROENTEROLOGY ORGANISATION

Formed in 1935 and incorporated in 1958, The World Gastroenterology Organisation (WGO) is a federation of 115 member societies and 4 regional associations of gastroenterology representing more than 50,000 individual members worldwide, focusing on the improvement of standards in gastroenterology training and education on a global scale. WGO’s mission is to promote, to the general public and healthcare professional alike, an awareness of the worldwide prevalence and optimal care of gastrointestinal and liver disorders, and to improve care of these disorders, through the provision of high quality, accessible and independent education and training.

ABOUT WORLD DIGESTIVE HEALTH DAY

The first World Digestive Health Day (WDHD) was held on 29 May 2005. Ever since, the World Gastroenterology Organisation (WGO) annually celebrates World Digestive Health Day by initiating a yearlong, worldwide, public health campaign through its 115 WGO Member Societies which reach over 50,000 individuals worldwide, WGO Training Centers, Regional Affiliate Associations, and other WGO global partners. Each year focuses upon a particular digestive disease or disorder in order to increase general public awareness of prevention, prevalence, diagnosis, management, and treatment of the disease or disorder.

InBios receives Emergency Use Authorization for its Smart Detect SARS-CoV-2 rRT-PCR Kit for detection of the virus causing COVID-19

InBios International Inc., a leading developer of diagnostic tests for emerging infectious diseases, announced today that it received Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its Smart Detect SARS-CoV-2 rRT-PCR Kit. This real-time PCR test is intended for the qualitative detection of nucleic acid from SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, in human nasopharyngeal, anterior nasal and mid-turbinate nasal swab specimens from individuals suspected of COVID-19 by their healthcare provider. Clinical laboratories that are certified under Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) in the U.S. can immediately begin using this kit, which offers results in about 4 hours. This kit has been validated on the popular Applied Biosystems 7500 Fast Dx Real-Time PCR and the Biorad CFX96 Touch Real-Time PCR Detection System instruments.

Dr. Syamal Raychaudhuri, InBios’ chief scientific officer, said, “From the very early days, we (InBios) have been quick to respond to emerging global public health threats such as Zika, dengue and West Nile virus, but also cautious to only release products we are confident are of the highest performance and quality. The Smart Detect SARS-CoV-2 rRT-PCR Kit upholds our commitment to these high standards during this time when it is critical to meet the need for accurate testing for COVID-19.”

The Smart Detect SARS-CoV-2 rRT-PCR Kit is available to order immediately. It is the first of several diagnostic test kits being released by InBios to help diagnose COVID-19. In the coming weeks, serology kits for antibody detection will be available, which could help expand and contribute to a wider testing of the population that may be infectious for SARS-CoV-2 virus.

InBios is ramping up production of its COVID-19 diagnostic tests to meet the worldwide need. In 2018, InBios relocated to a larger, modern facility in South Lake Union area of Seattle, Washington, and has successfully increased production capacity and automation to support the ever-increasing demand for its high quality kits to support diagnostic testing during outbreaks of Zika, dengue, West Nile virus and now COVID-19.

While the Smart Detect SARS-CoV-2 rRT-PCR Kit has not been FDA cleared or approved, it has been authorized for use by the FDA under an EUA, which permits use of certain medical products that may be effective during a public health emergency, which was declared for COVID-19 on Jan. 31, 2020. The test is only authorized for the duration of the declaration that circumstances exist justifying the authorization of emergency use of in vitro diagnostic tests for detection and/or diagnosis of COVID-19 under Section 564(b)(1) of the Act, 21 U.S.C. § 360bbb-3(b)(1), unless the authorization is terminated or revoked sooner.

Crutchfield Dermatology Offers Free Teledermatology Online Appointments for Those in Need

News Image

Charles E. Crutchfield III, M.D.

In these unprecedented times, we are fortunate to be able to help and feel honored to serve all those with dermatologic needs, including those who can’t afford it.” said Charles E. Crutchfield III, M.D., Medical Director of CrutchfieldDermatology.com

During a pandemic, other human health issues don’t disappear. In fact, if additional medical clinics close or have limited availability, patients suffering from many different medical ailments will be forced to take up valuable appointment spots in urgent care centers, emergency rooms, and even hospitals. That is why it is so essential to maintain a robust telemedicine capability to free up the burden and stress that could potentially burden those other healthcare facilities so they can focus on providing care for those who urgently need it.

At Crutchfield Dermatology, they have conducted hundreds of telemedicine (teledermatology) visits and are very comfortable seeing patients with virtual online visits. As a result, they have taken a national leadership position in telemedicine.

The schedulers at Crutchfield report excellent results as patients are happy to sign up for virtual online teledermatology visits. Patients love the ability to get their skincare needs addressed without having to go to urgent care. They can do so from the comfort, safety, and convenience of their own home. “Patients give the teledermatology visits very high ratings.” Commented Ashely N., lead nursing staff member.

Minnesota Governor Walz recently wrote a letter jointly with the Commissioners of Health and Commerce, urging health plans in Minnesota to extend coverage for most Minnesotans to receive medical care remotely – known as “telemedicine.” Other state leaders praised the effort as consistent with legislation aimed at expanding remote care. “Crutchfield Dermatology was ahead of the curve on this one and are seeing patients who need it, without charge,” commented Tim Quesnell, Clinic General Manager.

When it comes to online virtual telemedicine visits, Crutchfield Dermatology is incredibly flexible. They utilize several telemedicine platforms including, but not limited to, Zoom, Skype, FaceTime, Google Duo, WhatsApp, GoToMeeting, Slack cell phones, and even emailed photos combined with landlines. As a result, Crutchfield Dermatology can now serve about 95% of all patients who need an online virtual dermatology appointment.

Another positive is that most skin conditions are very amenable to telemedicine. Dr. Crutchfield can see the problem right on the monitor. With the quality of most computer cameras and cell phones, the picture quality is outstanding. For the few visits where there is a suspicious lesion, the doctor can have the patients come into the clinic, with full safety precautions. In urgent cases, the clinic can handle acute medical needs, in-person, also. “In fact, we have detected several melanomas via teledermatology over the past few weeks,” reports Dr. Crutchfield.

“In these unprecedented times, we are fortunate to be able to help and feel honored to serve all those with dermatologic needs, including those who can’t afford it.” said Charles E. Crutchfield III, M.D., Medical Director of CrutcheldDermatology.com

All they have to do is call our telemedicine coordinator, Kelly M., at 651 209 3628, and she will take it from there.

About Charles E. Crutchfield III, M.D.:

Charles E. Crutchfield III, M.D., is a graduate of the Mayo Clinic Medical School and a Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the University of Minnesota Medical School. He is currently the Medical Director of Crutchfield Dermatology in Eagan and is a Benedict Distinguished Professor of Biology at Carleton College. Dr. Crutchfield has won numerous teaching and professional awards and is the co-author of a children’s book on sun protection a dermatology textbook and hundreds of medical articles. He is a member of the AΩA National Medical Honor Society, an expert consultant for WebMD and CNN, and a recipient of the Karis Humanitarian Award from the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine. Thermal Product Solutions Moving To Prove Efficacy of Dry Heat Sterilization on PPE and N95 Masks

Gruenberg Truck-In Dry Heat Sterilizer

Gruenberg Truck-In Dry Heat Sterilizer

Recent tests at a research hospital show positive results in the dry heat sterilization of masks, face shields, gowns and other PPE, with minimal deterioration of the material. TPS is continuing to work with facilities to further confirm test results.

Thermal Product Solutions, LLC (TPS), a global manufacturer of thermal-processing and sterilizing equipment, announced they are working with hospitals to prove the efficacy of their Gruenberg product line for dry heat sterilization on PPE and N95 masks for re-use.

Recent tests at a research hospital show positive results in the dry heat sterilization of masks, face shields, gowns and other PPE, with minimal deterioration of the material. During the process, masks were heated to a specified temperature for a calculated period of time that resulted in sterilization of the material. After the sterilization process, fit tests were performed on the masks that passed filtration efficacy, structural integrity and mask fit. TPS is continuing to work with facilities to further confirm test results.

The Gruenberg sterilizers utilize convection airflow and dry heat for the process. Heat is absorbed by the item being sterilized for a period of time until it reaches the proper temperature needed to destroy microorganisms and achieve sterilization. Dry heat sterilizers range in size from small tabletop models starting at 1.25 cubic feet (cf) to large truck-in models offering 1,000cf of sterilization capacity. The larger truck-in unit is estimated to have the capacity to sterilize 15,000 to 18,000 masks per day based on a cycle time of roughly one hour.

Gruenberg’s smaller dry heat sterilizers feature a unique design where the process chamber is sealed throughout the entire cycle, containing any airborne particulates and sterilizing them. Larger chamber systems are easily customized and feature intake and exhaust HEPA filters and offer several door seal options for peace of mind.

“We are dedicated to finding methods that aid in protecting the health and safety of all those serving on the front lines during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our dry heat sterilizers have been used for decades in the decontamination and sterilization of all forms of microbial life and it only made sense to begin testing their efficacy on sterilizing PPE for hospitals and emergency personnel. We are looking to find additional testing partners quickly and ultimately receive FDA approval to help fight the COVID-19 spread.” – – Greg Jennings, President & CEO

Optimization of Tau PET Imaging for Alzheimer’s Clinical Development, Upcoming Webinar Hosted by Xtalks

Xtalks Life Science Webinars

It will be important to review the current data to understand what we know about Tau in AD and how second-generation tracers are being applied in clinical studies.

Join Victor L. Villemagne, Associate Professor, Department of Molecular Imaging and Therapy, The Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, The University of Melbourne and Richard Manber, Biomarker Scientist, IXICO in a live webinar on Friday, April 24, 2020 at 10am EDT (3pm BST/UK).

In recent years, there has been an increasing focus on investigating the role of Tau in the onset and progression of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), and in other neurodegenerative diseases associated with the accumulation of pathological misfolded Tau, such as progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD). Studies using recently introduced second-generation Tau tracers suggests that these tracers are binding to Tau with higher specificity compared to previous tracers, leading to increased interest in Tau within clinical studies. However, it’s still unclear what role Tau imaging will play in clinical trials: should Tau be used as a clinical endpoint; and how does it link to other biomarkers such as amyloid-beta, with some studies suggesting that amyloid-beta triggers the spread of Tau beyond the MTL region.

Given that the majority of Tau studies have been conducted using first-generation PET tracers, which had shown high incidences of off-site binding, it will be important to review the current data to understand what we know about Tau in AD and how second-generation tracers are being applied in clinical studies. Additionally, this webinar will cover the steps being taken to advance Tau PET operational and analytical methodologies in AD clinical studies and other Tau-related neurodegenerative diseases.
