Clean Rooms International Retrofits HEPA Units for COVID-19 Care Sites

Clean Rooms International (CRI) – a leading manufacturer of cleanrooms, workstations and air filtration equipment – is taking action in response to the urgent needs presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. To support life-sustaining and essential service providers, the company has successfully reconfigured and repurposed stock products to enable hospitals to convert standard patient rooms into negative pressure rooms for patient isolation.

“Healthcare systems are experiencing incredible pressure to accommodate growing numbers of patients impacted by the coronavirus,” said Tim Werkema, President and CEO of CRI. “Customers came to us seeking a new way to quickly convert standard hospital rooms into negative pressure rooms for quarantine. In less than a week, our team of engineers repurposed dozens of units. In less than a month, we’ve shipped more than 1,000 from coast to coast.”

Due to the nature of the COVID-19 disease, which can be transmitted through respiratory droplets in the air, CRI engineers looked at its HEPA air filtration product inventory. Standard HEPA fan filter units were inverted and paired with exhaust systems or mounted to a small cradle with castors to create mobile units. The products are highly efficient in filtering and evacuating contaminants from the air. This creates a negative pressure environment, minimizing airborne contagions from entering hallways and corridors in a health facility.

“As infection levels continue to rise, hospital systems will look for new and inventive ways to convert their facilities to meet patient needs,” said Bret Asper, Chief Operations Officer at CRI. “We’re grateful our product engineers were able to come up with a quick and cost-effective solution and we can bring this to market as quickly as we did.”

About Clean Rooms International

Clean Rooms International (CRI) is the partner of choice for cleanroom design, components, hard wall and soft wall cleanrooms, fan filter units and testing and certification services. Based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, CRI proudly designs and manufactures cleanroom solutions in the USA. For additional information, please visit http://www.cleanroomsint.com.

Florida Poly works to protect healthcare workers amid COVID-19 crisis

A Florida Poly laboratory technician reaches up to work on a 3D printer being used to create components for face shields that will be used by clinicians as they combat COVID-19 in Central Florida.

Florida Poly laboratory technician Samuel de Oliveira works on a 3D printer to create components for face shields that will be used by clinicians as they combat COVID-19 in Central Florida.

“In this time of crisis, we are happy to be able to help because we have the equipment and the facilities to make a difference,” said Dr. Matt Bohm, director of industry engagement and capstone projects at Florida Poly.

A team of Florida Polytechnic University faculty, staff, and students is working to build critical personal protection equipment for clinicians treating patients amid the current COVID-19 pandemic. The effort is in partnership with AdventHealth and will help address the shortage of protective supplies facing healthcare organizations nationwide.

The group is using 3D printers on campus to create components for protective face shields. After the 3D-printed headbands and other pieces are done, they will be assembled at AdventHealth’s Nicholson Center and distributed to the provider’s locations throughout Central Florida.

“In this time of crisis, we are happy to be able to help because we have the equipment and the facilities to make a difference,” said Dr. Matt Bohm, director of industry engagement and capstone projects at Florida Poly.

The face shield components are being printed on 20 of the University’s 3D printers, and an additional 10 printers will get to work in the next few days. Depending on the printer, one to two headbands can be produced in four to five hours. Bohm said he hopes 3,000 to 4,000 face shield components can be completed by the end of April.

“It’s really great to see everybody coming together to try to get some solutions out there,” said Bohm, who is organizing the effort from Florida Poly.

Bohm is part of a team of eight at Florida Poly that is working to complete the face shield components. They are ensuring their own health and safety by only allowing one person in the lab at a time and sanitizing tools after they are used.

Florida Poly is joining a growing number of colleges and universities across the country and around the world who are contributing time, talent, and materials toward the fight against COVID-19.

“Many of us are even working with people we normally would consider our competitor and doing collaborations that might usually be tense under typical circumstances,” Bohm said.

Djuan Gayle, a senior majoring in computer engineering, is one of two students who have received special permission to work inside the Innovation, Science, and Technology building as part of the effort.

“The fact that we can now turn to 3D printing when other means of manufacturing cannot keep up is mind-blowing and it finally brings the importance of 3D printing to light,” said Gayle, who is from Miami, Florida.

“Being part of this project means that I get to play my part and help my community.”

Logos of Project HOPE and Americares

“We’re proud to team up with Americares to deliver this large shipment of protective gear for Chicago’s frontline workers, who are risking their lives to save lives every day,” said Project HOPE President and CEO Rabih Torbay.

Project HOPE and Americares, two U.S.-based relief and development organizations responding globally to the COVID-19 pandemic, have joined forces to deliver more than 3 tons of lifesaving personal protective equipment to the city of Chicago. The shipment, which arrived April 3, contains 25,000 surgical masks, 19,000 isolation gowns, over 15,000 pairs of examination gloves and other supplies for Chicago’s frontline health workers and homeless shelters.

“We respond wherever the world’s healthcare needs are greatest, and today that is right here in the United States,” said Project HOPE President and CEO Rabih Torbay. “We’re proud to team up with Americares to deliver this large shipment of protective gear for Chicago’s frontline workers, who are risking their lives to save lives every day. This is only the beginning of Project HOPE’s support for the COVID-19 response in Chicago as well as other American cities hit hard by the virus.”

“Having an adequate supply of personal protective equipment is absolutely necessary to ensure the safety of health workers as any patient they treat could be infected with COVID-19,” said Americares President and CEO Christine Squires. “Right now, our No. 1 priority is getting PPE into the hands of those on the front lines and we are proud to be working with Project HOPE to ensure Chicago’s health workers are protected.”

With one of the only international response teams on the ground in Wuhan from the earliest days of the outbreak, Project HOPE began providing critical support to frontline health workers treating patients and working to contain the spread of the virus. Project HOPE has delivered nearly 5 million facemasks and other protective gear as well as lifesaving medical equipment, including ventilators, to hospitals that cared for tens of thousands of patients in China. In addition, Project HOPE quickly ramped up its global response to provide live, online training on COVID-19 prevention and treatment, protective gear and other support for health workers in high-risk countries like North Macedonia, Kosovo, Ethiopia, Indonesia and Colombia. Project HOPE is also providing protective equipment and medical surge staff to help support the COVID-19 response in the United States.

Americares is providing critically needed protective gear, training and emotional support for health workers on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure they can continue their lifesaving work. To date, Americares has shipped 18 tons of protective equipment, disinfectants and other critically needed supplies for health workers in COVID-19 hotspots worldwide. In the United States, Americares has delivered masks, gloves and other infection control supplies to 34 states, including Illinois. In addition, Americares is training health workers in infection prevention and control, mental health and psychosocial support and disaster preparedness, and continuing to care for patients at its primary care clinics in Colombia, El Salvador, and in Americares home state of Connecticut, including referring patients with suspected COVID-19 infections for testing.

DCA implements new teledentistry capabilities to support local healthcare and emergency dental needs

DCA provides teledentistry for dental emergency patients, alleviating stress on healthcare system

“The numbers of patients opting for virtual consultations continues to grow rapidly,” shared Jerry Rhodes, CEO. “DCA is pleased to provide a solution for our affiliated doctors and their patients, while also doing our part to support front-line healthcare providers in this time of crisis.”

Since the launch of Dental Care Alliance’s teledentistry solution on March 21, DCA-supported doctors have helped more than 1,400 emergency dental patients with virtual consultations and communication. This timely, important service allows dentists to triage a patient’s unique concerns to determine if immediate emergency dental treatment is needed, while helping alleviate some overload in local hospitals and emergency rooms.

These virtual, teledentistry visits allow consultation in a secure environment for both the patient and the provider. Patient education campaigns are underway to communicate this important service to those in need.

With many area dentists opting to close their doors at this time and with the continuing pressure on our nation’s emergency rooms, DCA and its affiliated providers are doing everything possible to alleviate any possible burden on the healthcare system. DCA has partnered with local ERs and urgent care centers surrounding their affiliated practices to offer referral options for their patients presenting with dental emergencies.

“The numbers of patients opting for virtual consultations continues to grow rapidly,” shared Jerry Rhodes, Chief Executive Officer. “DCA is pleased to provide a solution for our affiliated doctors and their patients, while also doing our part to support front-line healthcare providers in this time of crisis.”

High Performance Medical Solutions (HPMS), a division of Hitachi Cable America Inc., HPMS COVID-19 Global Cooperative Response

With the COVID-19 (coronavirus) humanitarian crisis growing daily, “Powering Good” is certainly a message that all Hitachi companies are embracing. High Performance Medical Solutions, a division of Hitachi Cable America, Inc. has joined in the fight against the disease. We are doing all we can to protect our employees, our customers, and the many communities that we are a part of and serve.

Our social infrastructure has changed virtually overnight. People are coping as best they can while medical facilities and personnel are doing outstanding work with the limited resources they have.

To support our customers, the hospitals, and the many doctors and nurses serving on the front line, we have been prioritizing our “critical to life” device manufacturing. This will ensure that we deliver to our medical and military heroes the devices they need. Peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) and midline catheters in particular are badly needed for treating severely ill patients.

Hitachi is also accelerating the production of our ultrasound cable and cable assemblies specifically intended for respiratory ultrasound machines, allowing doctors to check if pneumonia has settled into the lungs of patients. These same cables are being used for mothers giving birth in a time of crisis and for others who unfortunately need hospital attention.

Thanks to recent FDA provisional approvals, which eliminated extensive delays and long validation cycles, new advanced therapies have been fast-tracked to improve the breathing and medical outcomes of dangerously ill patients. What might have taken many years previously is now being achieved in a matter of weeks in order to save the maximum number of lives as soon as possible.

Ventilators are just one way to aid a patient’s respiration. Other innovative technologies have rapidly been brought forth by key OEMs. HPMS is expediting these unique tubes that deliver life-saving airway opening medications.

“In war someone has to make the bandages”, states Joe Iamartino, COO of HPMS. “Hitachi is doing its part to help heal the nation in this war against the invisible enemy.”

The Crown Automotive Group To Donate Meals For Hospital Workers

Our community must come together during these tough times and we’re proud to be able to support both our local restaurants and hospital workers during these challenging times.

During these uncertain times, local dealership group Crown Automotive Group, has stepped forward to help support our community as we collectively fight the COVID-19 pandemic. To help the heroes on the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis and to give relief to local restaurants affected by the lock down, Crown has asked the Parkshore Grill and Baystar Restaurant Group and Catering to prepare over 500 meals to hospital workers and medical staff at two local hospitals: Bayfront and Morton Plant.

“We can’t thank our area hospitals and their dedicated staffs adequately for what they do every day as we face this epic tragedy that has affected so many families in our community and the nation. We also wanted to support our area restaurant groups, Frank Chivas with Baystar and Steve Westphal of St. Pete Restaurant Group who have been so charitable in their own right during this pandemic,” said Jim Myers, President and Chief Operating Officer of Crown Automotive Group. “The least we can do is give back and make sure these front line hospital heroes don’t have to worry about a meal during their busy shift.”

Long hours fighting for the community has made day-to-day activities even more difficult for medical staff working in hospitals. Crown would like to thank these individuals for all the sacrifices they have made by providing a good meal during a typical busy shift.

At Morton Plant’s main campus 250 meals will be delivered between 10:30 and 11:00 am on Thursday April 9th. 250 meals represent enough food to feed all the staff working from the 11 am morning shift through the afternoon. Morton Plant meals will be prepared by The Baystar Restaurant and Catering Group, best known for the Salt Rock Grille and Island Way Grille of Clearwater and the food will be donated and delivered by Crown employees.

At Bayfront Hospital, the Parkshore Grille of Beach Drive in downtown St. Pete, part of the St. Petersburg Hospitality Group will prepare 275 meals which will be donated and delivered by Crown Automotive Group employees at 5:00 pm on Thursday April 9th. 275 meals represent enough food to feed all the late shift hospital staff as they prepare to fight for so many patients again through the night.

All Crown delivery volunteers will deliver the food outside the hospital at an exclusive entry used by hospital workers only. Crown will also be delivering 30 cases of water to both hospitals.

“We are proud to stand together with other local businesses,” continued Myers. “Our community must come together during these tough times and we’re proud to be able to support both our local restaurants and hospital workers during these challenging times.”

Donations received in support of the virtual fitness challenge provide educational programs designed to help patients and their families navigate the clinical research process.

On April 15, the Center for Information & Study on Clinical Research Participation (CISCRP) will be initiating the 2nd annual Medical Hero Appreci-a-thon to bring the global clinical research community together to express their appreciation for all “Medical Heroes” – medical and healthcare professionals, researchers and study volunteers. CISCRP invites the public to participate in this free month-long virtual fitness opportunity.

Participants can share the distance they will go to recognize Medical Heroes by tracking any form of exercise—cycling, running, elliptical, weightlifting, sit-ups, yoga, stair climbing, pet-walking and other physical activities—on the Appreci-a-thon portal. Donations received in support of the virtual fitness challenge provide educational programs designed to help patients and their families navigate the clinical research process.

“Last year, nearly 400 people across industry, research, advocacy, and patient communities participated globally in this virtual appreciation event and the spirit of support and teamwork was inspiring,” said event organizer Justine Holleran. “This year we’re hoping to see an even larger community participating in this virtual fitness challenge to raise awareness about clinical research and its importance to public health.”

“Clinical research education and awareness is even more critical today,” added Ellyn Getz, Associate Director, Development and Community Engagement, at CISCRP. “Medical, healthcare and research professionals are working tirelessly to provide care and treatment.
