Landaal Packaging utilizes manufacturing capability to make and donate face shields for local hospitals and first responders

Our first responders and health care professionals are putting their lives and the lives of their families on the line every day, so we knew we had to quickly determine how we could best provide a solution. — Mark Landaal, VP of Sales and Marketing

Due to the rapid rise of COVID-19 cases across the world, we are experiencing a shortage of personal protection equipment (PPE) for our local health care workers, first responders and other essential employees. The state of Michigan has been hit especially hard by the virus. Currently, Michigan ranks fifth highest in the nation for number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 and numbers are still on the rise.

Recognizing the risk to the safety of the community, Landaal Packaging leadership saw an opportunity to help address the PPE shortage. To ease some of the local demand, a team of designers and production members at Landaal Packaging Systems came together to design, test, and produce over 2,800 face shields for local essential workers in need.

“Our community has faced hardships in the past, but nothing quite like this,” explains Mark Landaal, VP of Sales and Marketing for Landaal Packaging. “Making face shields aligns with both our manufacturing capabilities and our commitment to philanthropy and community service. Our first responders and health care professionals are putting their lives and the lives of their families on the line every day, so we knew we had to quickly determine how we could best provide a solution.”

Born of innovation, Landaal Packaging’s focus was to create a simple and effective face shield that could be produced and distributed as quickly as possible. “Being a domestic manufacturer puts us in a unique position to address the challenges brought on by COVID-19,” explains Mark Landaal. Once the design was completed, Landaal Packaging sourced the necessary materials from their supply network and using existing equipment, such as the ZUND Digital Cutting System, began producing face shield components.

All the shields were then assembled and packaged for safe transit. “By simply shifting some of our resources and our production capacity to creating disposable face shields, we help alleviate some of the demand for PPE in our community,” adds Mark Landaal. Once produced, the face shields were then donated to local hospitals and organizations in need.

“Though times are hard, Michiganders are strong and resourceful. Landaal Packaging and its associates are committed to our community, so donating the face shields was just the right thing to do.”

The Cremation Center of Birmingham on How Covid-19 Has Changed How We Will Handle Death

Kelly Johnson, owner of the Cremation Center of Birmingham and funeral director with more than 25 years funeral home experience, sheds light on what changes people will see in dealing with the death of a loved one, during the event of a national emergency.

No one thought the United States of America would see the day when we would see mass graves off the State of New York and funeral homes overrun with deceased family members. How could it be that a mass burial would be acceptable in the U.S.?

Death is inevitable, it comes to us all. But somehow in our thinking, we believe that working on plans for our death may bring death upon us sooner. Do we believe that having health insurance will bring on illness? LIfe insurance, while it is very important to the financial stability of your family, is not quite the answer either.

At the Cremation Center of Birmingham, in Alabama, it is not uncommon to see families who are not prepared to cover the cost of a $950 basic cremation. They have not saved, even when they knew a death was imminent in their family. When a national emergency causes unexpected deaths, the situation is much worse.

What could you expect in a situation where a national emergency caused hundreds or thousands of unexpected fatalities. First, funeral homes will become pickier about what families they will help. The deceased’s relative can and should expect to be queried about how they will pay for their funeral or cremation arrangements up to and including requiring payment before the remains will be picked up from the place of death.

Another reasonable possibility, is that funeral homes will stop taking life insurance assignments. A life insurance assignment is a “promise to pay” by a life insurance company, to a funeral home or cremation center, when there has been time to process a claim on a life insurance policy. Even in the best of times, processing a life insurance claim can be a long process, taking from weeks and sometimes months for the benefits “pay out.” In the event of a national crisis, that time will triple and most funeral homes and cremation centers will not wait the time it takes to receive the payment from an insurance company. The family will be asked for payment up front or the family will be denied services.

Pre-payment to a funeral home can be risky. While many states have enacted laws to protect consumers from unscrupulous funeral establishments, people will find ways around and break the laws, to embezzle money from the families they have promised to protect. Some funeral establishments, like the Cremation Center of Birmingham, in Alabama, suggest Pre-Planning arrangements, but do not require prepayment. In this way, the family’s money is secure.

The very best way to be sure to ensure your loved ones will be able to have the proper end of life arrangements, even in the event of a national emergency, is to put enough money aside to pay for a minimum funeral or cremation arrangement and have it available to a trusted source, whom you know will have no problems releasing the funds when they become needed. A steady relative, church member, even an attorney, who can be trusted are some possible avenues to be sure the funds can be accessed quickly, when needed. Another way to be sure you could cover emergency funeral services, is to have a credit card, with a limit that would cover the minimum amount you would need in your area. There are credit cards available (for example Wal-mart) that you pre pay in order to have the credit available.

What is a minimum funeral or cremation arrangement? The price of funeral services varies, like other expenses, depending upon where you live. For example, like Automobiles, the type of service chosen by the family will dictate the cost. There are luxury cars and “clunkers” and many models in between. If you choose a large national chain funeral home, funeral prices can be upwards of $10,000 and cremation over $5,000.00. Also be wary of low prices that seem “too good to be true.” Going back to the example for the automobile, if you see an ad for a brand new vehicle for one hundred dollars, would you be skeptical that the total cost will be one hundred dollars for a new car? Perhaps your Mother once said, look for the “basic” or mid range of prices, not necessarily the lowest price, look for value. In many areas a basic cremation can be priced at near $1000.00 dollars and some family only, direct burials at near $4000.00.

To surmise, a good “plan of action” is to be sure that as a family, there is access to at least $1,000.00 for a cremation and near $5,000.00 for a ground burial. The Cremation Center of Birmingham, in Alabama, has a basic cremation at $950.00. Keep in mind, this price for burial would not include a burial plot in a cemetery. If your family does not have access to a burial plot in a cemetery and finances were an issue, consider cremation. Cremation may seem unusual or not your family tradition, however, if you can change your thinking, to it’s the “size of the container” all normal funeral functions like songs and a minister, can take place at a memorial service.

It would be heartbreaking for most families to have their deceased loved one treated with less than the respect they deserve. A burial in “pauper’s field” or a mass burial in an unmarked grave would make an already devastating situation feel unbearable. Many will say, “I can’t save a thousand dollars or have a credit card I do not access.” The alternative to not having a plan, is to lose the right to say what the final disposition of someone you loved will be. Without access to some form of payment, in an emergency situation, the choice will be taken from you. The Cremation Center of Birmingham, in Alabama, and others across the country exist, to be sure families have affordable options. In these uncertain times, when another emergency situation occurs, be sure your family will be ready.

Clearwater Periodontist Shares Ways to Keep Your Mouth Healthy While Your Dentist is Closed

Dr. Todd Britten’s Periodontal Practice is located in Clearwater, Florida

“The safety of our patients, community and all dental team members has been and always will be always be our greatest concern.”

On March 16th, The American Dental Association (ADA) recommended on March 16 that dentists restrict their practices to all but urgent and emergency care due to the COVID19 pandemic.

On March 20th, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis ordered all dental offices to postpone all elective dental procedures until May 8th. In the meantime, dentists are asked to see emergency patients to lessen the burden on the hospital systems.

Britten says dental hygiene homecare is especially important while under quarantine to help avoid dental emergencies. He recommends thorough, yet gentle brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between the teeth with floss, interdental brushes, or softpicks. He also suggests avoiding VERY hard foods to avoid fracturing teeth or roots, and also limiting acidic and sugary beverages.

Since the shutdown, Dr. Todd Britten has been seeing emergency patients, explaining, “Conditions that would be considered urgent/emergent would include, but are not limited to the following:

Moderate to severe pain and/or soreness

Swelling of your gums, face, or neck

Uncontrolled bleeding

Signs of infection

Trauma

Medically necessary procedures to treat pain, infection, disease, or the likely potential thereof.”

If you experience a dental emergency, Dr. Britten is readily available to take care of any dental advice or emergency care in his Clearwater, Florida periodontal office. “The safety of our patients, community and all dental team members has been and always will be always be our greatest concern.”

Britten states that he, his employees and patients are eagerly awaiting any reopening protocols from the experts and authorities. “We will continue to update and educate our staff, patients and community, on any and all safety guidelines and treatment protocols as they become available.”

Britten Periodontics & Implant Dentistry is a periodontal practice offering patients personalized dental care in implant dentistry in Clearwater, Florida. Dr. Todd Britten received his Bachelor of Science & Doctorate of Dental Surgery from University of Florida, a Master’s Degree and Certificate in Periodontology and Implant Dentistry; and completed extensive training at the Institute of Advanced Laser Dentistry. First Aid Global LLC Donates PPE To Nursing Homes That Are Frequently Overlooked

Nurse holding one of First Aid Global’s PPE Kits

We dropped twenty PPE to the Salvation Army’s Hope Harbor and received a very warm welcome from a nurse who had little in the way of personal protection equipment.

“Purchase a T-shirt, provide a PPE Kit for a healthcare worker or first responder in need” is the current mantra for the good people at First Aid Global LLC in Tarzana California. They created a T-shirt screened with “Social Distance Warrior” and their own unique emoji design and are selling them on their website for $25.00, promising to donate a complete PPE Kit to a medical worker in need for each shirt sold.

The result: “We’re off to a great start!” says co-owner Todd West. “Yesterday we dropped twenty PPE to the Salvation Army’s Hope Harbor in Los Angeles and received a very warm welcome from a nurse who had little in the way of personal protection equipment,” West says.

Hope Harbor serves to empower homeless men suffering from drug and alcohol abuse to achieve spiritual, physical and social self-sufficiency. It is an in-care facility that Veterans can utilize up to a 2-year stay.

Eduardo Galvan, co-owner of First Aid Global LLC says “Immediately upon arrival I witnessed many homeless people knocking on the door of Hope Harbor and then being served food. It touched me to see that on these sometimes terrible streets there is a place where the homeless can get help.”

Each packaged PPE Kit includes a containment suit, N95 mask, goggles, gloves, booties, hair net, disinfectant wipes and bio-hazard waste bag. Sold on their website for $24.95 each, the kits are being made as fast as they’re being handed out. First Aid Global has scheduled deliveries to a Children’s Hospital as well as a Nursing Home in Long Beach and they have plans to include out-of-state nursing facilities too.

“It appears that in the state of New York, fifty-eight percent of the deaths happened in nursing homes in New York City,” Mr. West adds. “This would indicate that the Federal Government has been overlooking these nursing homes in mass and so we’re focusing on them first. I know there are many medical workers in need and we are certainly limited, but we all have to start somewhere.”

You can take part in the giveaway by purchasing your own “Social Distance Warrior” T-shirt by visiting First Aid Global’s Social Distance Warrior webpage.

Charles E. Crutchfield III, M.D. Request That the Governor and Legislators to Repeal MinnesotaCare Tax

Charles E. Crutchfield III, M.D.

“Having physicians, hospitals, and other caregivers step up to the plate, risk the health of themselves and their families, and then to place a tax on them for so heroically answering the call in this pandemic flies in the face of all that is fair and reasonable,” states Dr.Crutchfield.

Dr. Crutchfield sent a letter to the Governor and several key legislators, The Honorable Melissa Hortman, The Honorable Kurt Daudt, The Honorable Paul Gazelka, The Honorable Susan Kent, The Honorable Michelle Benson, The Honorable John Marty, The Honorable Rena Moran, The Honorable Deb Kiel, asking the Minnesota Care tax to be discontinued. “Having physicians, hospitals, and other caregivers step up to the plate, risk the health of themselves and their families, and then to place a tax on them for so heroically answering the call in this pandemic flies in the face of all that is reasonable, just and fair. It is time to repeal this tax,” states Dr.Crutchfield.

Subject: Request to Eliminate MinnesotaCare Tax during COVID-19 Pandemic

Dear Governor Walz:

As the former President of the Minnesota Association of Black Physicians that backed you for Governor – our first-ever endorsement – thank you for your leadership during this time. As we navigate this crisis, I ask you to please review the equity and fairness of the Minnesota Medical Provider Tax.

Physicians are putting their lives on the line to care for critically ill patients. It seems terribly unfair to tax them while they are doing this or caring for any other patients.

While the recent MinnesotaCare Tax grace period may help clinics like ours already forced to furlough staff, the pandemic reveals the negative impacts of this aged tax once created to fund healthcare for those without coverage. New federal and state initiatives have reduced that need, and while the tax provides coverage for some, its surpluses are used on programs not intended.

The pandemic shows the tax to be a financial and administrative burden on those putting their lives on the line to care for patients afflicted by COVID-19 as well as a cost to patients themselves. It goes against Minnesotan common sense to hit our exhausted medical community with a tax of attainder to pay for a benefit intended for all. No other critical industry, such as farming or construction, faces a targeted tax on those who produce public value.

The MinnesotaCare Tax exclusively hits patients and doctors at a time when they can least endure it. Like other small businesses, independent clinics have suffered enormous losses, and patient avoidance has led to massive layoffs. People needing care of all types are now hit with a tax when scrambling to make ends meet while unemployed or losing their small businesses.

Our clinic conducts skin cancer evaluations, where delay in diagnosis can cost a patient their chance of survival. We’ve already furloughed 40% of our staff and may lay off more if the crisis continues. The MinnesotaCare Tax has worsened this painful circumstance.

Governor Walz, thank you for all you do and for taking the time to read my letter. Please consider my request to dispense with a tax that burdens those giving their best at a time when they can least afford it. I’d be pleased to speak further with you or any member of your staff.

Sincerely,

Charles E. Crutchfield III, M.D.

Canadian Tech Startup EssentialGoods.org Finds Creative Solution for “Out of Stock” Essentials

News Image

With the international COVID-19 pandemic and the push by governments to #stayhome, more consumers are going online to shop for essential items. However, online stores face the same out of stock issues as retailers, leading EssentialGoods.org of Collingwood, Ontario, Canada to create a new alert system that allows people to access essential items most commonly out of stock. After a quick turnaround, the service is operational as of April 20th.

“Currently, people are having to constantly be online monitoring stock levels to ensure their families get what they need,” said Jon Gillham, CEO of adbank. “We wanted to take the stress and anxiety out of that process, especially for those most affected by the crisis, like seniors and front line healthcare workers.”

The solution is simple:

1) The user creates an account at https://essentialgoods.org

2) The user selects the in-demand products their family needs most

3) Users will receive a text SMS alert immediately when that item is in stock so they don’t miss the opportunity to purchase. The service is 100% free for seniors and essential workers.

Created by Conor Watt, Lead Developer at adbank, who had been developing a service that utilized an Amazon.com API, a clever pivot allowed him to create a stock level monitoring system that is now EssentialGoods.org.

“I realized that a simple tech solution could help solve one of the many problems people are experiencing during this epidemic,” said Watt.

At present, the system only monitors Amazon.com, which Canadians can still order from, with plans to include Amazon.ca soon after launch, as well as explore other online retailers.

“Safety is a top priority during a public health crisis. This is why the team has built-in extra layers of quality control to ensure that people are being alerted only when a product meets their standards,” said Narcis Bejtic, Operations Lead at adbank. “This combats low-quality counterfeit products as well as suspicious resellers.”

EssentialGoods.org will donate 5% of profits to The CDC Foundation and The Collingwood Hospital Foundation. The service is 100% free for seniors and essential workers and will have a low monthly fee for other users to cover operational costs, after a free trial period.

Essential Goods was built by the team at adbank, a Canadian-based ad tech startup, building blockchain-based ad platforms that tackle the $50 billion ad fraud problem. Using AI and blockchain technology, the adbank network provides full transparency of transactions between advertisers and publishers while creating a new cryptocurrency powered ecosystem that detects and reduces fraud at scale.
